The Romanian public broadcaster TVR has decided to close two channels due to the financial difficulties it now finds itself in.
Quoted in the local press, TVR president Claudiu Saftiou said that it has accumulated debts of €145.6 million and that they will take up to seven and half years to pay off.
The channels to go will be TVR Cultural and TVR Info, with the former being incorporated into TVR 2 (which will be renamed TVR 2 Cultural) and TVR 3 and the latter into TVR 1.
There is growing criticism of the move in Romania, which comes at a time when other public broadcasters in the CEE region, including Poland’s TVP and the Czech Republic’s CT, are planning to add to their channel portfolios.
