Post dm800/7025/800:How to stream SDTV & HDTV from my .

How to stream SDTV & HDTV from my DM box to my computer

For the DM7025, DM800 and the DM8000 boxes only

Please note the OLD E2 webif screens are still included in this page

    Requirements

    1. A PC or Notebook running XP/Vista/OSX/Linux (Iphone / Windows Mobile 6 etc)
    2. A web browser - Firefox and Google Chrome (for Windows users)is recommended however Internet Explorer (Version 7 up) does work with limited success
    3. You will need to download and install the application called VLC version 0.8.6i on your computer Click here
    4. You can see a flash movie on Howto install VLC here Make sure you follow all the steps.
    5. Make sure your DM box is connected to your local area network (LAN). Most important
    6. Make sure your PC is connected to your local area network by cable or wifi. Most important

    Howto do it

You need to know the IP address of your DM Box. Most important
Open your web browser to the IP address of your DM box or simply use http://dreambox

In this example below we will use the IP address of 192.168.1.200 and this world wide web site in your DM box will appear.

Now we have two (2) options for streaming from your DM box back to your PC or other device.

    1. Onboard streaming (open a stream in your web browser) Allows you to watch one channel on the TV and another Channel in the Web Interface a very cool feature
    2. VLC - open a VLC session on your PC

Option 1 - Open a stream in your web browser

Mileage varies here depending on your computer spec

Warning: do not use VLC 0.9.x for this

    Use VLC 0.86i

[note this only applies to the old webif - not the new Jade2 04/01/09 release]

This will allow you to stream TV from your DM box to your computer. It will even allow you to
pay a different channel than is playing on your TV (for multi tuner users you can even play a channel
on a different transponder ot satellite)

    Getting started.
Simply click on the SCREEN icon on the top blue bar as shown below.

[note this only applies to the old webif - not the new Jade2 04/01/09 release]

Once you clicked on the SCREEN icon this page below will be resented to you. DO NOT PANIC as it is
meant to be a blank screen. Before we get into this to far lets look at the options on this screen.

    • The < button means rewind
    • The > button means play
    • The >> button means fast forward
    • The || button mean pause
    • The stop button mean stop
    • The fullscreen button means make the video full screen on your computer
    • The Vol+ button turns up the volume on your computer
    • The mute button will mute the sound on your computer
    • The Vol- button turns down the volume on your computer

Which brings us to the final option choose service.

For this streaming tool to work you need to tell it what you want to watch.
So to start with lets select the same TV channel we are watching on the TV.

NOTE: If you have selected the Show Blinking clock in display during record option to be turned on in the System set up screens the current time will be flashing on the LCD when the webif streaming is active!

    Known issues:
Always try where possible to use the firefox browser for this application. (I have not tried safari)

    • If you try the IE browser make sure you allow the activeX plugin - else it will never try to work
    • The current release of google chrome does not work as it should

Not all computers will stream HDTV in the manner due to lack of RAM/processor power. If this is the case
with you please see the next option.

    Option 2 - Open VLC via a stream.m3u download

Mileage varies here depending on your computer spec

This is a more straight forward way of streaming, and depending on your computer will happily stream
    HDTV to your computer.

    1. Select a HDTV service for your DM box to play on your TV from you DM boxes World Wide Web Interface
    2. Make sure it is playing on your TV (nothing worse than trying to get something to stream if it does not first work on the TV)
    3. Highlight the TV channel in the webif
    4. Click on the SCREEN icon on the right hand side of the highlighted line
    5. Allow the download of the stream.m3u file which should automatically open VLC or the HDTV media player you have set up on your computer
    6. Watch TV

TIP: some of you might find that VLC 0.9.x works better than VLC 0.8.6i for HDTV.
