Howto setup my local area network (LAN) connection

you really want to do this even if you have no internet

Howto mount any network device to my DM box

This is where you set up your DM box on your Local Area Network (LAN) via wifi (DM800,DM8000) if you have a wifi USB unit, or by hard wire plugged into your ethernet port(LAN cable). If you planning on using any of the mulit-media tools like the VLC Movie player, the Media player or the world wide web interface, this must first be set up for your network.

which will allow you to mount any network device to your DM box (see the bottom of this wiki page)



Setting up your LAN via the onboard ethernet adaptor (cable)


On this screen we can configure the;

1. Adapter settings: Set up the IP address of the box, net mask of the box, the Gateway of the box
2. Nameserver settings: Set up the domain name sever (DNS) this box will use
3. Network test: Test our network and see it is working
4. Restart network: where we can restart our LAN
5. Network Wizard: Use the wizard screens to do all the above

Adapter settings:


Here we can set up;

Use Interface: Do you want to use the LAN adaptor on the previous menu? Yes or no - in 99% of all cases say yes
Use DHCP: for new user this option will discover the details below if your modem router has a DHCP server active in it. But to use most of the tools you will want to disable this option
the IP address of the box: this must be a unique address you assign to your DM box (unique = NO other device on the LAN has this address)
net mask of the box: On most networks this will be a C class address as shown by default 255.255.255.0
the Gateway of the box: (next page) the address of your modem router out to the internet (if you have a PC connected to your LAN check what it is using for a gateway as this should be the same address as the PC's gateway.






Nameserver settings:


Here we can set up the domain name sever (DNS) this box will use. It is in most cases the same address of your modem router or gateway.
However you can also use the OPEN DNS settings (the global DNS) of 208.67.222.222 or 208.67.220.220




Network test


Test your network and see if it is working



A problem - the LAN cable is unplugged - plug it in and re-test and all is OK

Setting up the PLI Mount Manager plugin


What does this plugin do for me?

• If you do not have a HDD installed you can use the mount manager to mount a network device (another DM box, a HDD from your PC or a NAS) to your box and use it for time shifting
• If you do not have a HDD installed you can use the mount manager to mount a network device (another DM box, a HDD from your PC or a NAS) to your box and use it for the Media Player options
• If you do not have a HDD installed you can use the mount manager to mount a network device (another DM box, a HDD from your PC or a NAS) to your box and use it for Recording

Note: when sharing a network device to the HDD on your box, you need to share is as "harddisk" with a sub directory of "movie"

How do I set up the mount manager?


Download the mount manger plugin via the Plugins Menu. Once it has downloaded and installed it can
be configured from this menu screen (see top of the page). Simply press the OK button over the Mount Manager option
and the menu below will be shown to you. It does not matter if you have wifi or ethernet cable connected to your box,
the set up is the same, but the behavior on a wifi network may be limited (see note below).



Now press the Blue button or ADD button, to add a network mount.



Now the network edit screen is shown to you and there are a few tips to remember here;
1. Most network devices will be mounted via CIFS
2. Use CIFS unless you specifically know what you are doing / adding

Mount type: The default is CIFS and will work on most NAS, DM600, DM7000, DM7020 boxes and a Windows based PC
Server IP: The IP address of the shared network device
Server Share: The name of the directory you are sharing (see note above)
Local Directory: The location of the shared directory (see note above)
rsize/wsize: If you are using wifi you may want to make this 8192 or lower
Mount Options: not used in CIFS mode
Username: Important: make a fake entry as shown above even if there is no username
Password: Important: make a fake entry as shown above even if there is no password

Once you have finished entering the details press the OK button on your remote and this screen below will appear;



Now make sure you press the GREEN or SAVE button to ensure your details are saved. This is an important step and
often over looked by newer users.
