Softbank Wanted to Buy Intel's Entire Foundry Division Before Settling
Softbank wanted to buy out the entire foundry division of Intel, which the company refers to as Intel Foundry Services (IFS), but settled for a $2 billion equity stake in the company, Tom's Hardware reports citing Financial Times. This aligns with a long-held industry view that Intel is spinning off IFS as a standalone company much like AMD did with GlobalFoundries, about 15 years ago. Apparently, Softbank was stonewalled by Intel's CHIPS Act funding. In 2024, Intel entered an agreement with the US Department of Commerce to receive funding under the Biden Administration's CHIPS and Science Act. The company was granted $7.86 billion in funds on condition that Intel will maintain at least 50.1% stake in IFS if it ever sought to spin it off as a separate company.

Noctua Blames GPU Supply Issues for Lack of Beige and Brown RTX 5090 "
ASUS and Noctua recently released the pricey NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Noctua Edition graphics card, which comes Noctua's classic beige and brown color scheme, three noise-optimized NF-A12x25 G2 fans, and a whopping $1,500 MSRP, putting it squarely in flagship price territory. According to a report by KitGuru, however, Noctua wants to make an even more premium RTX 5090 Noctua Edition, but the current supply issues relating to the RTX 5090 are getting in the way.
In our review of the RTX 5080 Noctua OC, the Noctua OC put out the most impressive noise-normalized results we've recorded so far for the class, suggesting that Noctua might be able to tame the RTX 5090 equally well. Jakob Dellinger, Noctua PR and Product Manager, told KitGuru that even if the company would "love to do a 5090," there isn't enough supply of 5090 chips to be able to pursue a 5090 version. Likely as a result of these shortages, the prices for RTX 5090 cards have been sky-high, which has caused a drop in demand, as we previously reported. That said, the door isn't completely closed on a Noctua RTX 5090, with Dellinger specifically saying that the supply limitations make the graphics card impossible "at the moment."

Linux Kernel May Soon Support USB 3.x on Apple M1 and M2 MacBooks and
The Asahi Linux project has been working on Linux support for Apple's Arm-based Apple Silicon Macs, and the latest success to come out of the mammoth task is support for the USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports on M1 and M2 SoCs. While this support has been available to Asahi Linux for a while, the feature may soon be merged into the Linux kernel, since the feature addition has been submitted for comments via the Linux kernel public inbox.
The implementation still doesn't have support for DisplayPort or Thunderbolt alt modes, with the developer behind the driver stating that "there's also some preparations to eventually enable DisplayPort AltMode and Thunderbolt but those need future work." The driver is clearly still a work in progress, and the comments by the developers suggest that they are effectively fighting against the USB controller firmware to get some of the features to work, but that this implementation is so far the best that they could come up with. So far, Asahi Linux only supports M1 and M2 series Apple Silicon, and the only items missing in the hardware support section are USB-C Displays, USB4 and Thunderbolt connectivity, and TouchID support.

(PR) Intel and Trump Administration Reach Historic Agreement to Accele
Intel Corporation today announced an agreement with the Trump Administration to support the continued expansion of American technology and manufacturing leadership. Under terms of the agreement, the United States government will make an $8.9 billion investment in Intel common stock, reflecting the confidence the Administration has in Intel to advance key national priorities and the critically important role the company plays in expanding the domestic semiconductor industry.
The government's equity stake will be funded by the remaining $5.7 billion in grants previously awarded, but not yet paid, to Intel under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act and $3.2 billion awarded to the company as part of the Secure Enclave program. Intel will continue to deliver on its Secure Enclave obligations and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering trusted and secure semiconductors to the U.S. Department of Defense. The $8.9 billion investment is in addition to the $2.2 billion in CHIPS grants Intel has received to date, making for a total investment of $11.1 billion.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Launch Hype Results in Game Delays
The official release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally been announced as September 4, 2025, and while the gaming community is buzzing with excitement over the long-awaited sequel to one of the most popular Metroidvania games of the last decade, game developers are apparently concerned. As pointed out by a recent GameSpot report, a number of indie developers have pushed back the releases of their games to avoid being drowned out by the Silksong hype. At least three game developers have publicly announced that their games will be delayed due to the imminent launch of Silksong. Faeland was meant to launch its 1.0 release, but the developer announced on Steam that "Our v1.0 launch was set for Sept 9, but with today's Silksong news we've made the tough call to postpone." Aeternum Game Studios announced on X that Aeterna Lucis would be delayed, adding that "after the announcement of Silksong, we are fully aware that our game wouldn't have the visibility it deserves." Meanwhile, Panik Arcade delayed CloverPit to September 26, adding that "Silksong is the most anticipated and wishlisted game on all of Steam and we think people will love this game and play it right at launch (including us) but that also means it will overshadow all games launching close to it."
In the days since the announcement of Silksong's release date, the original Hollow Knight has broken its previous player-count record, with SteamDB recording a new record of 23,840 concurrent players on August 22, 2025—that's 800 players more than the previous record, which was in mid-2022 at the height of the Steam Deck's popularity. It has also officially sold over 15 million copies ahead of the official launch. We saw a similar series of events play out surrounding the launch of GTA VI, which even resulted in speculation that the fourth installment of one of the biggest looter-shooter franchises to date had been delayed to avoid GTA VI hype. While the games being delayed surrounding the launch of Silksong largely seem to be indie titles, the outsized hype over Silksong, which has been in development for over seven years, has clearly been felt across the industry.

AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Impresses in Early ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X Benchm
The AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme coming to the recently announced ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X in October, on paper, seems to be a sizeable upgrade over the Z1 Extreme found in the original ASUS ROG Ally and Ally X. The Radeon 890M iGPU in the new APU alone offers a sizeable 33% increase in stream processors over its predecessor, while the new CPU features more cache and an upgrade to Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores. This combination seems to be paying off, according to a brief test of Doom: The Dark Ages, shown off by Cary Golomb on X.
According to the tech influencer, the Xbox Ally X was capable of running Doom: The Dark Ages at 70 FPS with ray tracing and AMD FSR frame generation enabled. This was with FSR upscaling the image from 540p to 1080p and a mix of medium and low settings. Perhaps more impressive are the power draw and the internal temperatures during gaming. Even with the TDP set to a very respectable 18 W, and with the GPU running at 97% load, the temperature read-out was still showing 57° C. Given that gaming handheld is under load on the smaller side compared to some of the recent 11-inch monstrosities that have popped up, the temperature under load demonstrates a decently capable cooling solution.

NVIDIA Links Data Centers into a Unified Supercomputer with Spectrum-X
Data center networking is one of the most overlooked factors by the public, which is in fact responsible for all communication between nodes. However, NVIDIA knows that data centers with millions of GPUs are on the horizon, and for the fastest AI models, they need to be interconnected, even across multiple facilites. That is why NVIDIA today unveiled Spectrum-XGS Ethernet, an extension of the Spectrum-X networking platform engineered to interconnect multiple, geographically separated data centers into a single, giga-scale AI super-factory. The company states that Spectrum-XGS eliminates the capacity limits of single facilities by introducing distance-aware networking, which delivers predictable, low-latency performance across campuses, cities, and continents.
The technology is mainly delivered through software and firmware updates to existing Spectrum-X switches and ConnectX SuperNICs rather than new silicon. Spectrum-XGS offers auto-adjusted congestion control optimized for long-haul links, precise latency management to minimize jitter, and comprehensive end-to-end telemetry, which allows operators to visualize and control network traffic across multiple sites. NVIDIA reports that these changes nearly double the NCCL (Collective Communications Library) throughput for multi-GPU, multi-node training jobs and large-scale experiments, thereby improving efficiency for distributed AI workloads. NVIDIA framed Spectrum-XGS as a new axis of growth for AI infrastructure: after scaling up inside servers and scaling out inside data centers, scale-across connects facilities into unified compute fabrics.
