Thumbs up Faulty Windows Update from CrowdStrike Hits Banks and Airlines Around

A faulty software update to enterprise computers by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has taken millions of computers offline, most of which are in a commercial or enterprise environment, or are Azure deployments. CrowdStrike provides periodic software and security updates to commercial PCs, enterprise PCs, and cloud instances, with a high degree of automation. The latest update reportedly breaks the Windows bootloader, causing bluescreens of death (BSODs), and if configured, invokes Windows Recovery. Enterprises tend to bulletproof the bootloaders of their client machines, and disable generic Windows Recovery tools from Microsoft, which means businesses around the world are left with large numbers of machines that will each take manual fixing. The so-called "Windows CrowdStrike BSOD deluge" has hit critical businesses such as banks, airlines, supermarket chains, and TV broadcasters. Meanwhile, sysadmins on Reddit are wishing each other a happy weekend.

Thumbs up OpenAI in Talks with Broadcom About Developing Custom AI Chips to Powe

According to The Information, OpenAI is reportedly in talks with Broadcom about developing a custom AI accelerator to power OpenAI's growing demand for high-performance solutions. Broadcom is a fabless chip designer known for a wide range of silicon solutions spanning from networking, PCIe, SSD controllers, and PHYs all the way up to custom ASICs. The latter part is what OpenAI wants to focus on, but all the aforementioned IP developed by Broadcom is of use in a data center. Suppose OpenAI decides to use Broadcom's solutions. In that case, the fabless silicon designer offers a complete vertical stack of products for inter-system communication using various protocols such as PCIe, system-to-system communication using Ethernet networking with Broadcom Tomahawk 6 and future revisions, alongside storage solutions and many other complimentary elements of a data center.

As a company skilled in making various IPs, it also makes ASIC solutions for other companies and has assisted Google in the making of its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), which is now in its sixth generation. Google TPUs are massively successful as Google deploys millions of them and provides AI solutions to billions of users across the globe. Now, OpenAI wants to be part of the AI chip game, and Broadcom could come to the rescue with its already-established AI success and various other data center componentry to help make a custom AI accelerator to power OpenAI's infrastructure needed for the next generation of AI models. With each new AI model released by OpenAI, compute demand spikes by several orders of magnitude, and having an AI accelerator that exactly matches their need will help the company move faster and run even bigger AI models.

Thumbs up Acer Regulatory Filings Reveal Radeon RX 7900, RX 7800, and RX 7700 no

Regulatory filings by PC OEM major Acer, with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), drop some of the first references to three upcoming performance-segment graphics card SKUs by AMD. These include the Radeon RX 7900, the Radeon RX 7800, and the Radeon RX 7700. Acer is an AMD Radeon add-in board partner under its Acer Predator brand, which makes graphics cards not just for Predator and Nitro gaming PCs, but also graphics cards for the retail channel.

At this point, there are no specs known for the three, not even their memory sizes. It would be interesting to see how AMD slots the three into its product stack, particularly the RX 7900. The company currently has three RX 7900 series SKUs—the flagship RX 7900 XTX, and the second-best RX 7900 XT, but then the SKU next to this is the RX 7900 GRE, which saw a worldwide launch. Then there are the RX 7800 and RX 7700, which are pretty straightforward to predict. The RX 7800 will slot in between the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT, and will probably feature a 256-bit wide memory interface with 16 GB of memory, much like the RX 7800 XT; whereas the RX 7700 will be positioned below the RX 7700 XT. It wouldn't surprise us if AMD further cuts down the memory interface to 160-bit (10 GB).

Thumbs up Intel Statement on 13th and 14th Gen Core Instability: Faulty Microcod

Long-term reliability issues continue to plague Intel's 13th Gen and 14th Gen Core desktop processors based on the "Raptor Lake" microarchitecture, with users complaining that their processors have become unstable with heavy processing workloads, such as games. This includes the chips that have minor levels of performance tuning or overclocking. Intel had earlier isolated many of these stability issues to faulty CPU core frequency boosting algorithms, which it addressed through updates to the processor microcode that it got motherboard- and prebuilt manufacturers to distribute as UEFI firmware updates. The company has now come out with new findings of what could be causing these issues.

In a statement Intel posted on its website on Monday (22/07), the company said that it has been investigating the processors returned to it by users under warranty claims (which it has been replacing under the terms of its warranty). It has found that faulty processor microcode has been causing the processors to operate under excessive core voltages, leading to their structural degradation over time. "We have determined that elevated operating voltage is causing instability issues in some 13th/14th Gen desktop processors. Our analysis of returned processors confirms that the elevated operating voltage is stemming from a microcode algorithm resulting in incorrect voltage requests to the processor."
