Chinese x86 CPU Maker Zhaoxin Adds Support for "Preferred Cores" to Modernize its Processor Ecosystem
Chinese x86 CPU developer Zhaoxin is working on adding support in the Linux kernel for scheduling optimization on its processors featuring "preferred cores." Similar to asymmetric core designs from Intel and AMD, Zhaoxin's chips may have specific higher-performance cores the OS scheduler should target for critical workloads. To enable this, Zhaoxin has proposed Linux patches leveraging existing ACPI functionality to indicate per-core differences in max frequency or capabilities. The CPUfreq driver is updated to reflect this, allowing the scheduler to favor the designated high-performance cores when assigning threads and processes. This ensures tasks can dynamically take advantage of the faster cores to maximize performance. The approach resembles tuned scheduling, aware of core topology and heterogeneity already found in Intel and AMD processors.
Zhaoxin's patches don't specify which existing or upcoming CPUs will expose preferred core hints. The company likely wants the functionality in place for future server-class products where asymmetric designs make sense for efficiency. The new code contribution reflects Zhaoxin's broader upstreaming effort around Linux kernel support for its Yongfeng server CPU family. Robust open-source foundations are crucial for gaining developer mindshare and data center adoption. Adding sophisticated features like preferred core scheduling indicates that Zhaoxin's chips are maturing from essential x86 compatibility to more refined performance optimization. While still trailing Intel and AMD in cores and clocks, closing the software ecosystem and efficiency gap remains key to competitiveness. Ongoing Linux enablement work is laying the groundwork for more capable Zhaoxin silicon.

GIGABYTE Releases AGESA 1.1.0.1a AM5 Motherboard BIOS Updates, Suggests 8700G Based on "Hawk Point," Not "Phoenix"
GIGABYTE released UEFI firmware (BIOS) updates for its Socket AM5 motherboards encapsulating the AMD AGESA ComboAM5 PI 1.1.0.1a microcode. This latest version of AGESA has sparked speculation that some of AMD's upcoming Ryzen 8000G desktop APUs are in fact based on the newer "Hawk Point" silicon, and not "Phoenix." AMD released its Ryzen 8040 series "Hawk Point" mobile processors earlier this month, with a faster NPU that results in an up to 40% increase in AI interference performance over that of "Phoenix." "Hawk Point" is essentially identical to "Phoenix," including its first generation XDNA architecture based NPU, however the NPU's clock speed has been dialed up. If AMD is building some of its Ryzen 8000G desktop APU models on "Hawk Point" instead of "Phoenix," then we have our first solid hint that AMD is bringing Ryzen AI to the desktop platform, and that the Ryzen 8000G will end up being the first desktop processors with an NPU.
AMD is expected to be building at least two APU models based on the "Hawk Point" silicon, the Ryzen 7 8700G, and the Ryzen 5 8600G. The lower models, namely the 8500G and Ryzen 3 8300G, are expected to be based on the smaller "Phoenix 2" silicon, with a hybrid CPU that combines two "Zen 4" cores with up to four "Zen 4c" cores. The "Zen 4c" cores may feature an identical instruction set architecture (ISA) and IPC to the regular "Zen 4" cores, but have tighter Vcore limits, and operate at lower clock speeds. This makes the two available "Zen 4" cores the de facto "performance" cores, and AMD flags them as UEFI CPPC "preferred cores," ensuring the OS guides a bulk of its processing traffic to them. Both "Phoenix" and "Hawk Point" feature an identical CPU setup, with up to eight "Zen 4" cores.

NVIDIA's China-only GeForce RTX 4090D Launched with Fewer Shaders than Regular RTX 4090
NVIDIA today formally launched the China-specific GeForce RTX 4090D graphics card for gaming and creator applications, after it was banned this October by the United States Federal Trade Commission from exporting the RTX 4090 (among other AI GPUs) to China. The RTX 4090D comes with a reduced AI inference performance than the RTX 4090 to comply with the US-FTC limits, and measures are put in place to prevent end-users from modifying it into a regular RTX 4090. Besides firmware and driver-level performance limiters, the card gets a completely different ASIC code, a different device ID (which prevents BIOS transplants from the RTX 4090); and a different core-configuration of the 5 nm "AD102" silicon itself.
The "AD102" silicon physically has 72 TPCs (144 SM), from which NVIDIA carved out the original RTX 4090 by enabling 64 TPCs (128 SM). The new RTX 4090D only gets 57 TPCs (114 SM), which reduces the counts of the CUDA cores, Tensor cores, and RT cores. While the original RTX 4090 has 16,384 CUDA cores, 512 Tensor cores, and 128 RT cores; the new RTX 4090D is configured with 14,592 CUDA cores, 456 Tensor cores, and 114 RT cores. The GPU clocks are the same, both boost up to 2.52 GHz, although the power limits are reduced, with the TGP lowered by 25 W. The memory sub-system appears untouched. We are also hearing that overclocking of the RTX 4090D will be limited, with lower slider limits—all to prevent end-users from regaining AI inference performance levels comparable to an RTX 4090. NVIDIA is pricing the RTX 4090D at a baseline price of RMB ¥12,999 ($1,840), which was the launch price of the original RTX 4090 in China, before it was scalped out of existence there.

Nerfed GeForce RTX 4090D for China to Launch Today
NVIDIA this October was barred by the US Federal Trade Commission from selling the GeForce RTX 4090 in the Chinese domestic market. The company scampered to create a China-specific variant of the RTX 4090 that would comply with the FTC's limits on the AI inference performance, while mostly being as fast as the regular RTX 4090 at gaming. The resulting product is the RTX 4090D. This card has significantly lower AI inference performance, probably due to a lower Tensor core count as VideoCardz reports, or a firmware based performance limiter similar to LHR (lite hashrate) GPUs during the peak of the crypto-scalping GPU shortage. This card goes on sale today. To prevent modding of this GPU back to a regular RTX 4090, it probably comes with a different device ID, and other barriers that prevent video BIOS from regular RTX 4090 from being transplanted over; and overclocking of the GPU is disabled beyond the maximum boost frequency advertised. The TGP has been lowered to 425 W, too.

SilverStone Intros Extreme1200R Platinum, an SFX-L PSU with 12V-2x6 Co
SilverStone today introduced what is possibly the highest Wattage PSU in the SFX-L form-factor, the Extreme1200R Platinum. This contemporary PSU meets SFX12V 4.1 specification, which is comparable to ATX 3.1, along with PCIe CEM 5. It includes a native 12V-2x6 power connector capable of 600 W continuous power delivery and excursions within the PCIe Gen 5 spec. 12V-2x6 is a successor to 12VHPWR, and is designed to be less flimsy and prone to burn-outs than 12VHPWR, from improper connector coupling or cable bending.
The SilverStone Extreme1200R Platinum delivers 1200 W using a single 100 A +12 V rail, with Cybenetics Platinum rated switching efficiency. It comes with an all Japanese capacitor design, with most common electrical protections, against over/under voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. A 120 mm fluid dynamic bearing fan is used to keep cool. Connectors include a 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, a 600 W 12V-2x6, four 6+2 pin PCIe, eight SATA power, three 4-pin Molex, and a Berg. The company didn't reveal pricing.

NVIDIA RTX 4080 SUPER Sticks with AD103 Silicon, 16GB of 256-bit Memory
Recent placeholder listings of unreleased MSI RTX 40-series SUPER graphics cards seem to confirm that the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is getting 16 GB of memory, likely across a 256-bit memory interface, as NVIDIA is tapping into the larger "AD103" silicon to create it. The company had maxed out the "AD104" silicon with the current RTX 4070 Ti. What's also interesting is that they point to the RTX 4080 SUPER having the same 16 GB of 256-bit memory as the RTX 4080. NVIDIA carved the current RTX 4080 out of the "AD103" by enabling 76 out of 80 SM (38 out of 40 TPCs). So it will be interesting to see if NVIDIA manages to achieve the performance goals of the RTX 4080 SUPER by simply giving it 512 more CUDA cores (from 9,728 to 10,240). The three other levers NVIDIA has at its disposal are GPU clocks, power limits, and memory speeds. The RTX 4080 uses 22.4 Gbps memory speed, which it can increase to 23 Gbps.
The current RTX 4080 has a TGP of 320 W, compared to the 450 W of the AD102-based RTX 4090, and RTX 4080 cards tend to include an NVIDIA-designed adapter that converts three 8-pin PCIe connectors to a 12VHPWR with signal pins denoting 450 W continuous power capability. In comparison, RTX 4090 cards include a 600 W capable adapter with four 8-pin inputs. Even with the 450 W capable adapter, NVIDIA has plenty of room to raise the TGP of the RTX 4080 SUPER up from the 320 W of the older RTX 4080, to increase GPU clocks besides maxing out the "AD103" silicon. NVIDIA is expected to announce the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER and RTX 4080 SUPER on January 8, with the RTX 4080 SUPER scheduled to go on sale toward the end of January.

Intel Meteor Lake P-cores Show IPC Regression Over Raptor Lake?
Intel Core Ultra "Meteor Lake" mobile processor may be the the company's most efficient, but isn't a generation ahead of the 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" mobile processors in terms of performance. This isn't just because it has an overall lower CPU core count in its H-segment of SKUs, but also because its performance cores (P-cores) actually post a generational reduction in IPC, as David Huang in his blog testing contemporary mobile processors found out, through a series of single-threaded benchmarks. Huang did a SPECint 2017 performance comparison of Intel's Core Ultra 7 155H, and Core i7-13700H "Raptor Lake," with AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, 7840H "Phoenix, Zen 4," and Apple M3 Pro and M2 Pro.
In his testing, the 155H, an H-segment processor, was found roughly matching the "Zen 4" based 7840U and 7840HS; while the Core i7-13700H was ahead of the three. Apple's M2 Pro and M3 Pro are a league ahead of all the other chips in terms of IPC. To determine IPC, Huang tested all processors with only one core, and their default clock speeds, and divided SPECint 2017 scores upon average clock speed of the loaded core logged during the course of the benchmark. Its worth noting here that the i7-13000H notebook was using dual-channel (4 sub-channel) DDR5 memory, while the Core Ultra 7 155H notebook was using LPDDR5, however Huang remarks that this shouldn't affect his conclusion that there has been an IPC regression between "Raptor Lake" and "Meteor Lake."

AMD Withholds Radeon RX 7600 XT Launch in China Amid Strong RX 6750 GRE Sales
According to the latest round of reports, AMD has decided not to include China in the initial global launch of its upcoming Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics card. The RX 7600 XT, featuring 16 GB of memory and based on AMD's next-generation RDNA 3 architecture, was expected to launch soon at a price of around $300. However, the company is currently re-evaluating its Chinese GPU launch strategy due to the runaway success of its existing Radeon RX 6750 Golden Rabbit Edition (GRE) series in the region. The RX 6750 GRE cards with 10 GB and 12 GB configurations retail between $269-$289 in China, offering exceptional value compared to rival NVIDIA RTX models. AMD seems hesitant to risk undercutting sales of its popular RX 6750 GPUs by launching the newer 7600 XT.
While the RX 7600 XT promises more raw performance thanks to advanced RDNA 3 architecture, 6750 GRE, with its RDNA 2 design, seemingly remains efficient enough for most Chinese mainstream gamers. With the RX 6750 GRE still selling strongly in China, AMD has postponed the RX 7600 XT introduction for this key market. Final launch timelines for the 7600 XT in China and globally remain unconfirmed by AMD at time of writing. The company appears to be treading cautiously amidst the shifting competitive landscape.

AMD Ryzen 5 8600G to Feature Radeon 760M Graphics with 8 CU, 5.00 GHz Maximum CPU Boost
AMD's upcoming Ryzen 5 8600G Socket AM5 desktop APU will feature the truncated Radeon 760M integrated graphics, and not the previously believed Radeon 780M, or the full iGPU configuration present on the silicon. At this point, there are still conflicting reports on which exact silicon the Ryzen 8000G desktop APUs are even based on, with some of the older reports and Geekbench detecting 8600G engineering samples to be based on "Phoenix," and some of the newer reports suggesting that it's based on "Hawk Point." Both "Phoenix" and "Hawk Point" are nearly identical, except for the latter to feature a faster NPU.
The Ryzen 5 8600G is configured with a 6-core/12-thread CPU based on the "Zen 4" microarchitecture, with 1 MB of L2 cache per core, and 16 MB of shared L3 cache. The CPU base frequency is set to a healthy 4.35 GHz, and maximum CPU boost frequency of 5.00 GHz. These CPU clocks are very similar to those of the mobile Ryzen 5 7640H (which has a base frequency of 4.30 GHz, but the same 5.00 GHz boost), but in case of the 8600G, the 65 W TDP and possible 90 W PPT should help with boost frequency residency. The Radeon 760M gets 8 out of 12 RDNA3 compute units physically present on the silicon, giving it 512 stream processors. Geekbench detects an engine clock (GPU clock) of 2.80 GHz, compared to the 2.60 GHz of the Radeon 760M on the Ryzen 5 7640H. The 8600G ES was running on an MSI MEG X670E Ace motherboard, with 32 GB of dual-channel DDR5-6000 memory.

Steam Ends Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 Support
As of January 1st, 2024, Steam has officially stopped supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, existing Steam Client installations on these operating systems will no longer receive any updates, including critical security updates. Steam Support will be unable to offer technical assistance to users still on these older operating systems. Steam also cannot guarantee the continued functionality or security of the Steam client and games purchased through Steam on unsupported Windows versions. Users are strongly encouraged to update to a newer Windows 10 or 11 version to ensure Steam and its games continue functioning properly beyond the January 1st cutoff date.
This change is necessary because core Steam features rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome that no longer functions on older Windows. Future Steam versions will also require Windows features and security updates only present in Windows 10 and later. With Microsoft having ended security updates and technical support for Windows 7 in 2020 and Windows 8.1 in 2023, these older operating systems are increasingly vulnerable to new malware exploits when connected to the internet. This malware can negatively impact PC performance, cause Steam and games to crash, or be used to steal Steam account credentials. Alleged Intel Core i9-14900KS Pictured
At the 2023 International CES, Intel had announced its 65 W (locked) 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" desktop processors, but the star of the show then was the enthusiast-segment Core i9-13900KS Limited Edition processor. A picture of what is allegedly the i9-14900KS, suggests that Intel might repeat its last year's CES announcements, with the i9-14900KS. Last time around, they had the claim to launch the world's first 6 GHz processor, something that is also the latest maximum boost frequency of the current i9-14900K, so it remains to be see what the i9-14900KS brings to the table. A 6 GHz all-core boost for the P-cores, or a speed bump that lets it finally beat the $350 Ryzen 7 7800X3D at gaming? We'll find out next week in Vegas.

AMD Close to Launching Radeon RX 7800M Series Based on "Navi 32"
AMD's small Radeon RX 7000M and RX 7000S lines of mobile GPUs based on the latest RDNA 3 graphics architecture includes just five SKUs, spanning the "Navi 31" and "Navi 33" chips. The RX 7000M series only has enthusiast-segment RX 7900M series based on the "Navi 31," and the RX 7600M series based on the "Navi 33," leaving a vast gap that the company plans to fill with RX 7800M series and RX 7700M series SKUs based on the "Navi 32," referred to internally as "Cuarzo Verde." The GPU is meant to be hardwired onto the mainboards of gaming notebooks, however, AMD hands out reference-design MXM boards to OEMs. These were sniffed out in a public shipping manifest harukaze5719 on Twitter.
The "Navi 32" package is roughly similar in size to the compacted "Navi 31" package powering the RX 7900M series. It has a physically smaller 5 nm GCD with 60 compute units compared to the 96 on the "Navi 31" GCD; and is surrounded by four 6 nm MCDs, which give it 64 MB of Infinity Cache, and a 256-bit GDDR6 memory bus. With this, AMD has the option of not just carving out RX 7800M series and RX 7700M series SKUs, but also RX 7900S series SKUs within its segment aimed at gaming-grade ultraportables. We could see some product announcements to this effect Q1 2024, alongside some new desktop SKUs.

Palit Readies Fanless KalmX GeForce RTX 3050 6GB
Palit is preparing to bring back its fanless line of graphics cards, under the KalmX brand, with a fanless custom-design model planned for the upcoming GeForce RTX 3050 6 GB. NVIDIA is preparing to cap the bottom end of its product stack with the "new" GeForce RTX 3050 6 GB, a cut-down variant of the original 8 GB RTX 3050, with a TGP of around 70 W, enabling these to be fanless, and lack any additional power connectors (rely entirely on the PCIe slot power). VideoCardz fished out at least three RTX 3050 6 GB SKUs from Palit. These include the StormX OC (model: NE63050S18JE-1070F), StormX (model: NE63050018JE-1070F), and the KalmX (NE63050018JE-1070H). The three cards began appearing on Russian e-tailers, where they are priced at around 28,720 RUB (USD $320).

Huawei Still Ships 5 nm TSMC Chips in its Laptops, Despite US Sanction
According to the latest teardown from TechInsights, China's biggest technology maker, Huawei, has been shipping laptops with technology supposedly sanctioned by the United States. As the teardown shows, TechInisights has discovered that Huawei's Kirin 9006C processor is manufactured on TSMC's 5 nm semiconductor technology. Originally, the United States have imposed sanctions on Huawei back in 2020, when the government cut off Huawei's access from TSMC's advanced facilities and forbade the use of the latest nodes by Huawei's HiSilicon chip design arm. Today's findings show signs of contradiction, as the Qingyun L540 notebook that launched in December 2023 employs a Kirin 9006C chipset manufactured on a TSMC 5 nm node.
TechInsight's findings indicate that Kirin 9006C assembly and packaging occurred around the third quarter of 2020, whereas the 2020 Huawei sanctions started in the second quarter. Of course, the implication of the sanctions likely prohibited any new orders and didn't prevent Huawei from possibly stockpiling millions of chip orders in its warehouse before they took place. The Chinese giant probably made orders beforehand and is using the technology only now, with the Qingyun L540 laptop being one of the first Kirin 9006C appearances. Some online retailers also point out that the laptop complies with the latest security practices required for the government, which means that they have been in the works since the chip began the early stages of design, way before 2020. We don't know the stockpile quantity, but SMIC's domestic efforts seem insufficient to supply the Chinese market alone. The news that Huawei is still using TSMC chips made SMIC's share go for a 2% free fall on the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Chinese Researchers Want to Make Wafer-Scale RISC-V Processors with up to 1,600 Cores
According to the report from a journal called Fundamental Research, researchers from the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences have developed a 256-core multi-chiplet processor called Zhejiang Big Chip, with plans to scale up to 1,600 cores by utilizing an entire wafer. As transistor density gains slow, alternatives like multi-chiplet architectures become crucial for continued performance growth. The Zhejiang chip combines 16 chiplets, each holding 16 RISC-V cores, interconnected via network-on-chip. This design can theoretically expand to 100 chiplets and 1,600 cores on an advanced 2.5D packaging interposer. While multi-chiplet is common today, using the whole wafer for one system would match Cerebras' breakthrough approach. Built on 22 nm process technology, the researchers cite exascale supercomputing as an ideal application for massively parallel multi-chiplet architectures.
Careful software optimization is required to balance workloads across the system hierarchy. Integrating near-memory processing and 3D stacking could further optimize efficiency. The paper explores lithography and packaging limits, proposing hierarchical chiplet systems as a flexible path to future computing scale. While yield and cooling challenges need further work, the 256-core foundation demonstrates the potential of modular designs as an alternative to monolithic integration. China's focus mirrors multiple initiatives from American giants like AMD and Intel for data center CPUs. But national semiconductor ambitions add urgency to prove domestically designed solutions can rival foreign innovation. Although performance details are unclear, the rapid progress shows promise in mastering modular chip integration. Combined with improving domestic nodes like the 7 nm one from SMIC, China could easily create a viable Exascale system in-house.

MSI Claw Gaming Handheld Leaked, the ROG Ally Competitor
Here's the first picture of the MSI Claw, an upcoming handheld gaming console that's out to eat the lunch of category rivals Valve Steam Deck, and the ASUS ROG Ally. The Claw features a familiar handheld console layout with two thumb-sticks with their orbits that have RGB lighting, a D-pad, four action buttons, and some triggers. It's hard to tell from this angle, but the touchscreen in the middle could be of a 16:10 aspect ratio. We know this is a game console, and not a cloud gaming device like the Logitech G Cloud, looking at the 350 RMB Steam voucher offer in this marketing poster. This device is functionally identical to the ASUS ROG Ally, it's a Windows-based handheld that's backed by storefronts such as Steam and EGS. Precious little more is know about it, but given the teasers we're seeing, MSI should give us the details at the 2024 International CES.

AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D and 5000GT Chips Start Selling in Europe
The AMD Socket AM4 platform is still alive and kicking, with AMD releasing new processor models in its 7th year. Many of these chips started selling online in Europe. The Ryzen 7 5700X3D is a slightly lower clocked version of the 5800X3D, which for many of those still on AM4 is the final upgrade to their platform. The 5800X3D may be based on the older "Zen 3" microarchitecture, but thanks to its 3D Vertical Cache technology, offers gaming performance comparable to the Core i9-12900K "Alder Lake," making even 7-year old AM4 gaming desktops contemporary. To cash in on this exact market, AMD released a more cost-effective option, the Ryzen 7 5700X3D.
The 5700X3D is an 8-core/16-thread Socket AM4 processor that features 96 MB of L3 cache thanks to the 3D V-cache technology, just like the 5800X3D, but comes with a maximum boost frequency of 4.10 GHz, compared to the 4.50 GHz of the 5800X3D. Store listings do not mention its TDP or base frequency. The 5700X3D is being listed at 271€ including taxes, or about 15-20% cheaper than the 5800X3D. A word of caution when choosing the 5700X3D would be its close to non-existent overclocking headroom, so this probably isn't a chip that you can manually overclock to performance levels of a 5800X3D while saving some 40€ on the side.

EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra Whole-Home Portable Power Station Unveiled
EcoFlow at the 2024 International CES unveiled the Delta Pro Ultra. This battery inverter-generator is roughly the size of a mid-large travel bag, and is lugged around with wheels and a retractable handle; but in order to power a whole home, there is a static component to it in the form of a wall-mount distribution board. The unit itself puts out four standard 110-230 VAC sockets, a large 16/32 A socket, and a single-phase input for recharging the battery. An LED segment display puts out realtime usage/recharging stats. We are working to get its battery and electrical stats, but we're getting to learn that for a mobile home or a camper, this thing has the battery capacity to power things for days, including some high-wattage appliances such as a microwave oven or a washer. We expect its continuous power output to be in the 5-6 kVA range, with three of these adding up to a typical 18 kVA 3-phase household load.
