Details of Intel's Barlow Ridge Thunderbolt 5 Controller Leaks
erial leaker @yuuki_ans on X/Twitter has released details on Intel's upcoming Barlow Rridge Thunderbolt 5 controller which will be known as the JHL9580 or JHL9540 depending on the SKU. The good news is that Intel has finally moved to PCIe 4.0 for the bus interface, which was expected due to the increased bandwidth on offer by Thunderbolt 5 over Thunderbolt 3 and 4. Barlow Ridge will use a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface to connect to the host and it appears that the earlier leak that suggested native Thunderbolt support in Arrow Lake-S might be incorrect, as there are diagrams showing Barlow Ridge connected to Arrow Lake-S CPUs.
Besides the faster bus, Thunderbolt 5 brings asymmetrical data transmission support which means that for display applications there will be a 120/40 Gbps mode, whereas for data only applications Thunderbolt 5 will deliver a symmetrical 80 Gbps mode. We should point out that this only appears to apply to the JHL9580 SKU, which also supports 40 Gbps USB4 speeds, whereas the JHL9540 for some reason remains a Thunderbolt 4 controller. That said, both of the Barlow Ridge SKUs get support for 20 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, something that was lacking in previous Thunderbolt implementations. There will also be support for DisplayPort 2.1 via DP Alt Mode with full UHBR20 support when used with a DP80 certified cable. Actual data transfers are limited to the 64 Gbps PCIe 4.0 interface to the host system, just like USB4, but this does at least give Thunderbolt 5 extra head room for display data even in symmetrical mode. The Barlow Ridge controllers appear to be connected directly to the Arrow Lake-S CPUs via the PCIe 4.0 x4 interface, much in the same way USB4 host controllers connect to AMD's Ryzen 7000-series CPUS.

Show and Tell with the New Logitech Reach 2-in-1 Webcam and Overhead C
Content creators often find themselves not just needing a static positioned camera to show their faces, but something to show on a bench or a table from an overhead viewpoint, and which can be easily repositioned. Perhaps the best example would be game streamers wanting a viewport showing their user inputs in real time; or an engineering content creator wanting to show something on their bench from top. For these applications and more, Logitech launched the new Logitech Reach, a 2-in-1 Full HD webcam and overhead camera. The star attraction here isn't the camera itself, but its armature, which has been meticulously engineered by Logitech to provide a near-spherical freedom of movement for the camera. Reposition it in real time, and it will hold its position—no need to turn any fasteners to hold it in place, but a simple locking mechanism.
The armature of the Logitech Reach allows full 360° freedom of motion for the camera along a radius. The second axis of movement is vertical, letting you raise of lower the distance between the camera and the object, so you could optically zoom. Besides horizontal and vertical movements, the camera itself is suspended along an pivot, for an added dimension. Moving the camera around is single handed, and practically effortless. The Reach allows content creators to easily and quickly change viewpoints, from themselves, to an object that they're trying to show their audience. The camera additionally features an up to 4.3x lossless zoom, autofocus, and intrinsic image stabilization from the armature.

AMD Software Adrenalin 24.1.1 WHQL Released With AMD Fluid Motion Fram
AMD has released the latest version of AMD Software Adrenalin drivers, version 24.1.1 WHQL. This is quite a big update as new drivers add support for the new AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics card as well as bring day one support for Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and TEKKEN 8 games. There is also support for AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), which promises to boost FPS by up to 97 percent in any DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 game. In addition to AFMF, the new drivers also add AMD Video Upscaling, some additional video improvements, AMD Smart Technology Tab, AMD Assistant, and additional OS feature support. There are also several fixed issues.
According to AMD, AFMF improves performance by adding frame generation technology to AMD Radeon 700M, RX 6000, and RX 7000 series graphics cards, both desktop and notebook versions. AMD also claims that AFMF preserves image quality by dynamically disabling frame generation during fast visual motion. AMD claims up to 97 percent average increase in performance across select titles at 1080p resolution with enabled AFMF and FSR 2 set at Quality Mode on Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics card, as well as up to 103 percent increase with the same settings and the same Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics card at 1440p resolution.

Sony CEO Wants PlayStation Ecosystem to Expand into PC, AI & Cloud Ter
Kenichiro Yoshida—Sony Group Corporation Chairman, President And CEO—appeared as a guest on Norges Bank Investment Management's Good Company videocast late last year. News outlets have sluggishly picked up on some interesting tidbits from the November 2023 interview—the Sony boss has discussed his gaming division's ambitions in the recent past, but (host) Nicolai Tangen managed to pry out a clearer picture of PlayStation's ambitions for the future. Yoshida-san has an all-encompassing vision for the brand: "In short, it will be ubiquitous wherever there is computing users will be able to play their favorite games seamlessly, gamers will be able to find a place to play in different spaces, while PlayStation will remain our core product, we will expand our gaming experiences to PC, Mobile and Cloud." Gamers on the PC platform have to wait roughly two to three years for PlayStation exclusive titles to breakaway from home consoles origins—it is encouraging to hear that a greater number of conversions could be in the pipeline (with shorter lead times...hopefully).
The discussion moved onto game subscription services—a hotbed talking point as of late—Yoshida seemed to be happy with his company's normal mode of operation: "Well, we do subscription business model. At the same time, people usually play one game at the time, so an all-you-can-eat type of many games may not be so valuable compared with video streaming services. We have kind of balanced a hybrid service on PlayStation Network: subscription as well as paid content." Microsoft is a market leader with its Xbox and PC Game Pass services, now bolstered with a takeover of Activision Blizzard—the Sony CEO remained calm regarding his firm's main rival: "Healthy competition is necessary for the Games Industry to grow and at Sony we believe it is important to provide gamers with different options to play so we will continue our efforts to achieve this."

(PR) Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the
Apple today announced changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store impacting developers' apps in the European Union (EU) to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The changes include more than 600 new APIs, expanded app analytics, functionality for alternative browser engines, and options for processing app payments and distributing iOS apps. Across every change, Apple is introducing new safeguards that reduce—but don't eliminate—new risks the DMA poses to EU users. With these steps, Apple will continue to deliver the best, most secure experience possible for EU users.
The new options for processing payments and downloading apps on iOS open new avenues for malware, fraud and scams, illicit and harmful content, and other privacy and security threats. That's why Apple is introducing protections—including Notarization for iOS apps, an authorization for marketplace developers, and disclosures on alternative payments—to reduce risks and deliver the best, most secure experience possible for users in the EU. Even with these safeguards in place, many risks remain.

(PR) Microsoft Announces Participation in National AI Research Resourc
We are delighted to announce our support for the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot, a vital initiative highlighted in the President's Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. This initiative aligns with our commitment to broaden AI research and spur innovation by providing greater computing resources to AI researchers and engineers in academia and non-profit sectors. We look forward to contributing to the pilot and sharing insights that can help inform the envisioned full-scale NAIRR.
The NAIRR's objective is to democratize access to the computational tools essential for advancing AI in critical areas such as safety, reliability, security, privacy, environmental challenges, infrastructure, health care, and education. Advocating for such a resource has been a longstanding goal of ours, one that promises to equalize the field of AI research and stimulate innovation across diverse sectors. As a commissioner on the National Security Commission on AI (NSCAI), I worked with colleagues on the committee to propose an early conception of the NAIRR, underlining our nation's need for this resource as detailed in the NSCAI Final Report. Concurrently, we enthusiastically supported a university-led initiative pursuing a national computing resource. It's rewarding to see these early ideas and endeavors now materialize into a tangible entity.
