The Polish public broadcaster Telewizja Polska (TVP) plans to launch a 4K channel in time for the World Cup in Russia.

Quoted by Wirtualne Media, Maciej Stanecki, a member of the board at TVP, said that it has applied to the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) for a licence and expects to give TVP 4K a debut in mid-June, when the football competition starts.

As previously reported by Broadband TV News, TVP secured a loan of PLN800 (€190 million) from the National Treasury last year. Supplied in tranches, half of the funds will be used to technologically develop its services, which now include an OTT platform.

Separately, Press.pl reports that TVP may not be the only broadcaster in Poland to show the World Cup in 4K.

Quoting unnamed sources, it says that TVP has sublicensed some of the rights to the DTH platform nc+.
