Samsung Galaxy M44 surfaces in benchmark listing with surprising chips
Samsung is working on a new smartphone to bring into the already very crowded mid-range space, and it's been spotted in the Geekbench online results database today. That's definitely not out of the ordinary - someone at Samsung has a prototype in hand and is running benchmarks on it. What is a bit more interesting than the fact that prototypes are being benchmarked is that this one seems to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 SoC. That's an odd choice on Samsung's part, first because it's a Qualcomm chip and not one of its own Exynos parts, but also because the Snapdragon 888 is almost...

Counterpoint: US smartphone shipments fell by 24% compared to Q2 2022
According to market research carried out by Counterpoint, the US smartphone market shrunk by a whopping 24% year-over-year in Q2 this year. That doesn't come as a surprise since this is the third consecutive quarter with declining sales. Manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola and TCL-Alcatel saw the biggest decline in shipments. Samsung's shipments fell 37%, Motorola's by 17% and TCL-Alcatel's by 69%. Interestingly, Apple's shipments shrunk by just 6% despite the bleeding smartphone market, so expectations for the upcoming iPhone 15 series remain bullish, analysts say. Google was the only...

Samsung is expecting the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 to outsell their predecessors by 50%
Recently, TM Roh, the head of Samsung’s mobile division, revealed that the company sold just under 10 million foldable phones last year (60% of which were Galaxy Z Flip4s, 40% Z Fold4s). For 2023 the company expects to sell 50% more than that. This means that the target is around 15 million sales, which will keep Samsung the dominant player in the foldable market. Some analysts (Trendforce) are predicting that 18 million foldables will be shipped this year, others (IDC) are saying that the number will be above 20 million. That will mean that three quarters of all foldables sold in 2023...

iPhone 15 demand expected to be lower than for iPhone 14
The iPhone 15 family is expected to arrive this fall with a price hike and slimmer bezels. Interestingly, demand for the upcoming series is right now judged to be lower than it was for the iPhone 14 line when it came out last year. This is according to famously supply-chain connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In his latest report, he outright states it: "demand for the iPhone 15 is lower than that of iPhone 14".This is, of course, just a projection at the moment. Things could change. According to Kuo, "unless the demand for the iPhone 15 is better than market expectations after launch,...

Weekly poll: how do you feel about Apple's impending transition from Lightning to USB-C?
Remember the 30-pin connector that originated on iPods and was later used on the early iPhones? It was a large, clunky but surprisingly functional thing. Android 14 to combat in-app full-screen ads better
Ad-supported apps and games are a great way to get a free yet still subsidized experience. However, not all ads are created equal and full-screen ones are definitely among the more annoying ones. Google has also zoned in on the particular issue, and Android 14 comes with a per-app management interface for full-screen intents. In Android 14, you can manually revoke the USE_FULL_SCREEN_INTENT permission from apps so they can't send you full-screen notifications. Later this year, Google Play will auto revoke this permission from newly installed apps that don't provide calling or alarm...

Samsung Galaxy Watch6 review
IntroductionAt first glance, Samsung was very docile with the upgrades to its Galaxy Watch6 series. But you could argue that there was very little wrong with the Galaxy Watch5 series and that all the upgrades we got were useful or thoughtful. The new watches use the new Exynos W930 chipset, which is nearly identical to last year's W920. Both are made on a 5nm process and have dual-core Cortex-A55 processors, but the new chip has a higher 1.4GHz clock speed, which Samsung says makes for an 18% increase in speed. The Watch6 series also bumps the RAM up to 2GB.On the software...

Google might implement hardware requirements for future foldables

You get the point. As per some insider info courtesy of Mishaal Rahman, Google might be looking to...

vivo X100 Pro+ leaked specs suggest variable aperture and 200 MP telephoto lens

The upcoming flagship, expected in the upcoming months, is said to have a 50 MP main camera with the Sony IMX989 sensor that is 1”-type - the same, used in the X90 Pro+. However, here we’ll likely see a variable aperture, likely what Huawei did with the P60 Pro and its f/1.4-f/4.0 main cam. Another improvement would be a so-called 200 MP telephoto lens, which will be a massive increase for such a camera in the smartphone world. WhatsApp finally lets you send higher resolution photos
One of the main downsides of sending photos through WhatsApp is the processing that goes on, lowering their size, resolution, and quality significantly (and very visibly). This, however, is finally going to be a thing of the past. At least the low-resolution aspect, that is. Way overdue, but finally, here are "HD photos". In WhatsApp speak, "HD" in this case means the full resolution of the image. You also have the default "Standard" quality option for less storage and quicker transfer, which will halve the resolution. Pixel amount is one thing, compression is another - and WhatsApp...
