Default (PR) EK Launches NVIDIA RTX A5000 Graphics Card Water Blocks

EK, the leading computer cooling solutions provider, is now offering an enterprise-grade GPU water block for NVIDIA GeForce RTX A5000 graphics cards. This new water block incorporates a CNC-machined nickel-plated copper base with a laser-cut stainless-steel top for a robust metal cooling solution, effectively making it a single-slot assembly. The EK-Pro Rack GPU water blocks fit the standard Full Height Full Width (FHFW) server chassis form factor, making them a drop-in replacement for dual-slot active and passive air coolers. EK-Pro GPU WB RTX A5000 - Nickel + Inox Rack water block is purpose-designed for the RTX A5000 graphics cards. This water block directly cools the GPU, VRAM, and VRM (voltage regulation module) as the cooling liquid is channeled right over these critical areas.

The solution uses an Open Split-Flow cooling engine design that proved to be a superior solution for GPU water blocks. It is characterized by low hydraulic flow restriction, which means it can be used with weaker water pumps or pumps running on low-speed settings and still achieve top performance. The lowered coolant flow requirement makes it an ideal solution for multi-GPU workstations. The jet plate and fin structure geometry have been optimized to provide consistent flow distribution with minimal losses and optimal performances, even when used in reversed water flow scenarios.

    AMD RDNA3 Second-largest Navi 32 and Third-largest Navi 33 Shader Counts Leaked
The unified shader (stream processor) counts of AMD's upcoming second- and third-largest GPUs based on the RDNA3 graphics architecture, have been leaked in some ROCm code, discovered by Kepler_L2 on Twitter. The "performance.hpp" file references "Navi 32" with a compute unit count of 60, and the "Navi 33" with 32 compute units. We know from the "Navi 31" specifications that an RDNA3 compute unit still amounts to 64 stream processors (although with significant IPC uplifts over the RDNA2 stream processor due to dual-instruction issue-rate).

60 compute units would give the "Navi 32" silicon a stream processor count of 3,840, a 50% numerical increase over the 2,560 of its predecessor, the "Navi 22," powering graphics cards such as the Radeon RX 6750 XT. Meanwhile, the 32 CU count of the "Navi 33" amounts to 2,048 stream processors, which is numerically unchanged from that of the "Navi 23" powering the RX 6650 XT. The new RDNA3 compute unit has significant changes over RDNA2, besides the dual-issue stream processors—it gets second-generation Ray Accelerators, and two AI accelerators for matrix-multiplication.

$700-800 Ideal Price for GeForce RTX 4080: TechPowerUp Poll Surveying 11,000 Respondents
The ideal price for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 "Ada" graphics card is around USD $700 to $800, according to results from a recent TechPowerUp Front-page poll surveying our readers. Our poll "How much would you pay for RTX 4080 at most?" received over 11,000 responses. At the number 1 spot with 22% of the vote is $800, closely followed by $700. Together, this range represents 44% of the voters. 14% of our readers think $600 is an ideal price, followed by "less than $400" at 13%. 9% think $500 seems fair, followed by 7% willing to spend as much as $900. 5% is happy to spend $1,100. 2% or less feel that the current $1,200 MSRP is justified or are willing to spend more than MSRP. There's more to a majority finding sanity with the $700 to $800 price-range.

With NVIDIA cancelling the RTX 4080 12 GB, the RTX 4080 16 GB became the only SKU to bear the name "RTX 4080." This $1,200 MSRP GeForce RTX 4080 is the successor to the RTX 3080, which debuted at $700, marking a $500 MSRP increase generation-over-generation (or +71%). You begin to see why most readers prefer the $700-800 range to be the ideal MSRP, and are willing to tolerate a $100 increase. For even more context, the RTX 3080 "Ampere" launched at the same $700 MSRP that its successor, the RTX 2080 "Turing" launched at. The GTX 1080 "Pascal" came out at $600 ($700 for the Founders Edition), which explains the interest for $600 in our poll.

(PR) Samsung Develops GDDR6W Memory Standard: Double the Bandwidth and Density of GDDR6 Through Packaging Innovations
As advanced graphics and display technologies develop, they are blurring the lines between metaverse and our everyday experience. Much of this important shift is being made possible by the advancement of memory solutions designed for graphics products. One of the biggest challenges for improving virtual reality is taking the complexities of real-world objects and environments and recreating them in a virtual space. Doing so requires massive memory and increased computing power. At the same time, the benefits of creating more true-to-life metaverse will be far reaching, including real-life simulations of complicated scenarios and more, sparking innovation across a number of industries.

This is the central idea behind one of the most popular concepts in virtual reality: digital twin. A digital twin is a virtual representation of an object or space. Updated in real-time in accordance with the actual environment, a digital twin spans the lifecycle of its source and uses simulation, machine learning and reasoning to help decision-making. While until recently this was not feasible proposition due to limitations on data processing and transference, digital twins are now gaining traction thanks to availability of high bandwidth technologies.

Default PowerColor Announces its Hellhound 7900-series Graphics Cards

With 11 days to go until the official launch of AMD's Radeon 7900-series graphics cards, PowerColor decided to share some more details about its upcoming cards. The two models appear to be the Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 XT, with both cards apparently sharing the same design and cooler. The cards appear to be at least triple-slot, but it's not entirely clear from the provided pictures. PowerColor is using a nine-blade fan design and the fans are of course kitted out with LEDs, where PowerColor is pushing what it calls an "amethyst purple" colour for this generation of Hellhound cards. The new fans are said to improve the GPU temperatures by as much as three degrees Celsius compared to the previous generation of fans.

More importantly, the cards have been given an improved backplate, as well as a larger copper plate for the heatsink, for improved cooling. The new copper plate doesn't just cover the GPU now, but also the VRAM chips. The copper plate is connected to eight 6 mm heatpipes. PowerColor also shared that it's using a 14-layer high TG PCB, which uses a two ounce copper power layer. The RX 7900 XTX is kitted out with 20 VRMs, although this appears to be straight from the AMD reference design. PowerColor appears to have implemented a dual BIOS on the card, as there's a switch for OC/Silent operation and the card also appears to have a hardware LED switch, which is nice for those that don't care about lighting up their computer like a Christmas tree. Keep in mind that this is not PowerColor's top-of-the-range card, which is the Red Devil, so we should expect more details on those cards in the future too.

RTX 4090 has Issues with Need for Speed Unbound that can Only be Fixed with a VBIOS Update
Need for Speed Unbound (NFS Unbound), the latest entry to the popular genre-defining race sim by EA that launched today, unearthed a problem with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 "Ada" graphics card that cannot be fixed by simply updating the drivers or the game. This is a world-first—never before has a game required a VBIOS update to work around problems.

According to EA, the title exhibits a display flashing/blinking issue on machines powered by the RTX 4090, which requires a firmware update (i.e. video BIOS update). Luckily, this doesn't involve putting your RTX 4090 through a nerve-racking NVFlash manual BIOS update process (not that there's any risk with most RTX 4090 cards shipping with dual-BIOS). NVIDIA has released a fully-automated Firmware Update Tool that can be run from within Windows, which easily updates the video BIOS of the RTX 4090. We confirmed that it is in fact the video BIOS that is being updated (by comparing the VBIOS dumps before and after using the tool).

Default AMD Software Adrenalin 22.11.2 Released

AMD released the latest version of the AMD Software Adrenalin drivers. Although released in December, the drivers bear the version number 22.11.2 (as opposed to something like 22.12.1); as they were probably finalized late last month. Version 22.11.2 beta adds optimization for "The Callisto Protocol," "Need for Speed Unbound," and "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" Next-Gen Update. Among the issues fixed with this release are intermittent driver timeout or black-screen occurring with Radeon RX 6000-series during video playback and window switching on machines powered by RX 6000-series graphics and 240 Hz monitors.

Online video stuttering noticed in Firefox with hardware-acceleration on machines with RX 6000 series graphics, has been fixed. GPU utilization remaining at 100% after closing games on machines powered by RX 570 "Polaris" graphics cards caused due to buggy AMDRSServ.exe, has been fixed. A driver timeout or black-screen while videos are playing with VRChat on RX 6000-series GPU powered machines, has been fixed. Grapb the driver from the link below.

US Might Reimpose GPU Import Tariffs in the New Year
Currently, the US has an exclusion in place when it comes to import tariffs relating to graphics cards and GPUs imported from China, but the exclusion is set to expire on the 31st of December this year. So far, the US government has been quiet on whether or not the import tariff will be reinstated or not. If the tariff was to be reinstated, US consumers are looking at a 25 percent import duty on graphics cards, starting on the 1st of January, 2023.

There's no easy way to circumvent the tariff either, as it includes items like "printed circuit assemblies, constituting unfinished logic boards," according to Tom's Hardware. Not all graphics cards are made in China though, but the majority of graphics cards are today. It's possible that NVIDIA's move of its logistics center from Hong Kong to Taiwan could have some relation to this as well, as NVIDIA would then be shipping products out of Taiwan, rather than China, depending on how the US Customs classifies Hong Kong these days. We should know what happens in a month's time, but a 25 percent import duty on graphics cards will likely kill most sales, as most people already find them overpriced. This would of course affect AMD and NVIDIA, as well as their partners in the same way, unless they make their graphics cards outside of China.

(PR) IDC Tracker Forecast Sees Further Contraction for the Global PC and Tablet Markets with Commercial PC Demand Remaining the One Clear Opportunity
In a new International Data Corporation (IDC) forecast, the outlook for PCs and tablets continues to get worse. Worldwide PC and tablet shipments are forecast to decline 11.9% in 2022 with volumes shrinking to 456.8 million units, followed by a further decline in 2023. According to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, traditional PCs will see shipments drop 5.6% to 281 million units in 2023 while tablets will decline 6.7% to 148 million units.

Despite the sharp decline, shipment volumes will remain above pre-pandemic levels although the market will continue to be challenged by macroeconomic headwinds, excess channel inventory, and high levels of saturation. While the PC market is expected to fare better than tablets with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of just over 1% expected over the five-year forecast, tablets are expected to have a CAGR of -1.7% over the same period.

At the World Display Industry Conference in China, BOE showed off a range of upcoming products, ranging from various new TV displays, to a foldable OLED display for notebooks and a 600 Hz display for gaming notebooks. Not much is known about the 600 Hz display, but it's a 16-inch panel and it was shown off inside a notebook from an unknown vendor. BOE showed off a 500 Hz desktop display earlier this, but this is a step up from that. The foldable OLED laptop display measures 17.3-inches and is as such similar to products we've seen from Samsung.

Also on display at the event was a 34-inch Mini-LED gaming display with a 165 Hz refresh rate, a 1 ms response time and it's said to meet the DisplayHDR 1000 standard and should have a contrast ratio of 100,000:1. BOE calls its Mini-LED displays for α-MLED and the company also had an 86-inch TV display based on the same technology at the event. It's unknown if any of these displays will appear in consumer products outside of the Chinese market, although BOE laptop panels have been used in products sold globally.

AMD Ryzen 9 7900 and Ryzen 7 7700 (non-X) Listed as Prebuilt Options on Lenovo
Lenovo started offering the Ryzen 9 7900 and Ryzen 7 7700 processors as options for its prebuilt desktops, confirming that the 7900 and 7700 will be OEM-exclusives, at least initially. That doesn't mean these chips won't make it to the retail channel, as OEM-only parts from AMD in the past have somehow found their way to retailers, who bought them in trays, and sold them piecemeal as combos with motherboards and CPU coolers. The 7900 is a 12-core/24-thread part, just like its retail-channel sibling, the 7900X. The 7700 is an 8-core/16-thread part, again, similar to the 7700X. Not much else is known about these chips, except for their base frequency of just 3.60 GHz (compared to 4.70 GHz for the 7900X, and 4.50 GHz for the 7700X). Both chips are expected to feature a lowered TDP, with just 65 W for the 7700 (down from 105 W for the 7700X), and possibly 65 W or 105 W for the 7900 (down from 170 W for the 7900X).

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 with Nearly Half its Power-limit and Undervolting Loses Just 8% Performance
The monstrous NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 "Ada" graphics card has the potential to be a very efficient high-end graphics card with a daily-use undervolt, and with its power-limit halved, finds an undervolting adventure review by Korean tech publication Quasar Zone. The reviewer tested the RTX 4090 with a number of GPU core voltage settings, and lowered software-level power-limits (down from its 450 W default).

It's important to note that 450 W is a very arbitrary number for the RTX 4090's power limit, the GPU rarely draws that much power in typical gaming workloads. Our own testing at stock settings sees its gaming power draw around the 340 W-mark. Quasar Zone tested the RTX 4090 with a power limit as low as 60% (270 W). With its most aggressive power management they could muster (i.e. 270 W PL), the card was found to lose just around 8% of performance at 4K UHD, averaged across five AAA games at maxed out settings. The story is similar with undervolting the GPU down to 850 mV, down from its 1 V stock. In both cases, the performance loss appear well contained, while providing a reduction in power-draw (in turn heat and noise).

Update Dec 3rd: EA Support has just updated their support recommendation from graphics card VBIOS update to a motherboard BIOS update. "After testing, we've found a solution is to upgrade the motherboard BIOS. Please refer to your motherboard manufacturer's support page to obtain the latest system BIOS," the updated recommendation reads.

    AMD Readies 16-core, 12-core, and 8-core Ryzen 7000X3D "Zen 4" Processors
AMD is firing full cylinders to release a new line of Ryzen 7000-series "Zen 4" Socket AM5 desktop processors featuring 3D Vertical Cache, at the earliest. Faced with a significant drop in demand due to the slump in the PC industry, and renewed competition from Intel in the form of its 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" processors, the company is looking to launch the Ryzen 7000X3D desktop processors within January 2023, with product unveiling expected at AMD's 2023 International CES event. The 3D Vertical Cache technology had a profound impact on the gaming performance of the older "Zen 3" architecture, bringing it up to levels competitive with those of the 12th Gen Core "Alder Lake" processors, and while gaming performance of the Ryzen 7000 "Zen 4" processors launched till take match or beat "Alder Lake," they fall behind those of the 13th Gen "Raptor Lake," which is exactly what AMD hopes to remedy with the Ryzen 7000X3D series.

In a report, Korean tech publication Quasar Zone states that AMD is planning to release 16-core/32-thread, 12-core/24-thread, and 8-core/16-thread SKUs in the Ryzen 7000X3D series. These would use one or two "Zen 4" chiplets with stacked 3D Vertical Cache memory. A large amount of cache memory operating at the same speed as the on-die L3 cache, is made contiguous with it and stacked on top of the region of the CCD (chiplet) that has the L3 cache, while the region with the CPU cores has structural silicon that conveys heat to the surface. On "Zen 3," the 32 MB on-die cache is appended with 64 MB of stacked cache memory operating at the same speed, giving the processor 96 MB of L3 cache that's uniformly accessible by all CPU cores on the CCD. This large cache memory positively impacts gaming performance on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in comparison to the 5800X; and a similar uplift is expected for the 7000X3D series over their regular 7000-series counterparts.

Sapphire's Radeon RX 7900 Cards Make an Early Appearance on Amazon
Although we're almost two weeks away from the official launch of AMD's Radeon RX 7900-series, Sapphire's reference design cards have already made an early appearance on Amazon. Both of its cards are listed on the e-tailers website, but sadly without pricing. No new specs were provided either, but at least we did get some more detailed pictures of the two cards. The cards are simply named the Radeon RX 7900 XT Gaming (21323-01-20G) and the Radeon RX 7900 XTX Gaming (21322-01-20G).

It's very clear from the pictures that the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is a much chunkier card than the RX 7900 XT. This also confirms Sapphire as one of the partners that will sell reference cards, but it's unclear if Sapphire will have custom cards ready in time for the launch, or if the company will add those to its line-up at a later date. Note that the model number for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX lists it as having 20 GB of VRAM, although the packaging clearly lists it as having 24 GB. Searching for the model numbers provided by Amazon, it appears that the cards will be in stock in Sweden as well, as one of the local distributors is listing the cards. More pictures after the break.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 RDNA3 GPU Launch Could Face Scarcity, China Loses Reference Card Privilege
AMD's next-generation Radeon RX 7900 high-end graphics cards are set to arrive next week and bring the new RDNA3 GPU architecture to the masses. However, it seems like the customers will have to fight for their purchase as the availability could be scarce at launch, leading to potentially increased prices with low stocks. According to Igor's Lab report, Germany will receive only 3,000 reference MBA (Made By AMD) units of Radeon RX 7900 series cards. In contrast, the rest of the EMEA region will receive only 7,000 MBA units. These numbers are lower than expected, so AIB partners may improve the supply once their designs hit shelves.

On the other hand, mainland China will not receive any MBA units of the new cards as a sign of increasing tension with Taiwan. Of course, AMD's board partners will supply their designs to China, and they are allowed to; however, it seems that only AMD is making a statement here. In addition to supply issues, the launch is rumored to be covered in BIOS issues such as memory leaks and the COVID-19 outbreak affecting production in closed factories. Of course, all of this information should be taken with a grain of salt, and we must wait for the official launch before making any further assumptions.

January 5 Release Date Predicted for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti
A January 5, 2023 release date is being mooted by retailers for NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti graphics card, which is widely expected to be a re-branding of what would have been the RTX 4080 12 GB. Italian retailer Drako started a countdown for an ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 4070 Ti O12G custom-design graphics card, which winds down to January 5, and aligns with the rumored January 3 announcement of the card. It is also expected that reviews of the RTX 4070 Ti will be allowed to go live on January 4.

The GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB was supposed to max out the 4 nm AD104 silicon, featuring 7,680 CUDA cores across 60 SM (streaming multiprocessors), 60 RT cores, 240 Tensor cores, 240 TMUs, and 80 ROPs. The GPU features a 192-bit wide GDDR6X memory interface, to which NVIDIA is giving 21 Gbps-rated memory, yielding 504 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Its most interesting aspect is its power configuration, with a typical board power of 285 W, which makes it technically possible for board partners to use two 8-pin PCIe power connectors, unless they've been asked nicely to implement the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector.

Apple and NVIDIA First Customers of TSMC's Arizona Fab
Apple and NVIDIA will be among the first customers of TSMC's swanky new $12 billion semiconductor fab in Arizona, USA. Apple will be the first major player to kick off mass-production in the fab, and will be closely followed by NVIDIA. Both companies plan to produce some of their inventory in Arizona, and ramp proportionately up as the fab grows in capacity.

The plan with TSMC's Arizona fab was to originally make 5 nm and 4 nm EUV chips, with an output of 20,000 wafers a month, but the company now expects to deploy a more advanced node to keep up with what will be considered cutting-edge when the fab goes live (think 2 nm-class); and also double the output to 40,000 wafers a month. The capacity should ensure Apple and NVIDIA make their most cutting-edge chips on the node (away from Asia), so there could be tighter export controls, and build supply-chain resilience in the face of security problems arising in the Taiwan straits.

(PR) Enterprise SSD Revenue Slid to US$5.22 Billion for 3Q22 and Will Fall by Another 20% for 4Q22
TrendForce reports that the recent easing of tight supply for components has led to rising shipments for enterprise servers. Furthermore, ODMs for the most part have been able to sustain the momentum of data center build-out with the demand from ByteDance and the tenders issued by Chinese telecom companies. Nevertheless, the performance of the enterprise SSD market on the whole has been impacted by falling NAND Flash prices. For 3Q22, the NAND Flash industry's enterprise SSD revenue dropped by 28.7% QoQ to US$5.22 billion. Furthermore, all enterprise SSD suppliers recorded a negative performance for the period as well.

Regarding individual enterprise SSD suppliers' revenue figures for 3Q22, Samsung posted around US$2.12 billion. Its market share also shrank to 40.6% from 44.5% in 2Q22. Samsung's performance was mainly dragged down by the decline in its NAND Flash ASP. In the aspect of product development, SSDs featuring 128L NAND Flash and PCIe 4.0 will remain Samsung's main offerings for enterprise storage during 2023.

AMD Still Believes in Moore's Law, Unlike NVIDIA
Back in September, NVIDIA's Jensen Huang said that Moore's Law is dead, but it seems like AMD disagrees with NVIDIA, at least for now. According to an interview with AMD's CTO, Mark Papermaster, AMD still believes that Moore's Law will be alive for another six to eight years. However, AMD no longer believes that transistor density can be doubled every 18 to 24 months, while remaining in the same cost envelope. "I can see exciting new transistor technology for the next - as far as you can really plot these things out - about six to eight years, and it's very, very clear to me the advances that we're going to make to keep improving the transistor technology, but they're more expensive," Papermaster said.

AMD believes we'll see a change in how chips are being designed and put together, with chiplets being the future of semiconductors. Papermaster calls this "a Moore's Law equivalent, meaning that you continue to really double that capability every 18 to 24 months" although it's not exactly Moore's Law in the traditional sense. AMD also appears to be betting heavily on FPGA technology in some of its market segments, for something the company calls adaptive computing. As to how things will play out, time will tell, but with both AMD and Intel going down the chiplet route, albeit in slightly different ways, we should continue to see new innovations from both companies, with or without Moore's Law.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Could Get a Price Cut to Better Compete with RDNA3
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card has been out since mid-November and is a great performer in many resolutions and titles. However, with NVIDIA setting its price tag at $1200, it is an expensive product to afford and represents a considerable price jump compared to older xx80 GPU generations. According to MyDrivers, NVIDIA could lower the price starting in mid-December, to better suit the needs of consumers and have a competitive product. With AMD's RDNA3-based graphics cards releasing in the following days, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX costing $999 is a direct competitor to GeForce RTX 4080. If NVIDIA plans to cut the massive MSRP of the RTX 4080, then we expect it to be in the range of Radeon RX 7900 XTX to create better market competition.

Of course, this is only wishful thinking and a rumor that MyDrivers has reported, so we have to wait until the middle of this month to find out if NVIDIA announces the alleged price cut.

Default (PR) Global Top 10 Foundries' Total Revenue Grew by 6% QoQ for 3Q22, b

According to TrendForce's research, the total revenue of the global top 10 foundries rose by 6% QoQ to US$35.21 billion for 3Q22 as the release of the new iPhone series during the second half of the year generated significant stock-up activities across Apple's supply chain. However, the global economy shows weak performances, and factors such as China's policy on containing COVID-19 outbreaks and high inflation continue to impact consumer confidence. As a result, peak-season demand in the second half of the year has been underwhelming, and inventory consumption is proceeding slower than anticipated. This situation has led to substantial downward corrections to foundry orders as well. For 4Q22, TrendForce forecasts that the total revenue of the global top 10 foundries will register a QoQ decline, thereby terminating the boom of the past two years—when there was an uninterrupted trend of QoQ revenue growth.

Regarding individual foundries' performances in 3Q22, the group of the top five was led by TSMC, followed by Samsung, UMC, GlobalFoundries, and SMIC. Their collective global market share (in revenue terms) came to 89.6%. Most foundries were directly impacted by clients slowing down their stock-up activities or significantly correcting down their orders. Only TSMC was able to make a notable gain due to Apple's strong stock-up demand for the SoCs deployed in this year's new iPhone models. TSMC saw its revenue rise by 11.1% QoQ to US$20.16 billion, and the corresponding market share expanded to 56.1%. The growth was mainly attributed to the ≤7 nm nodes, whose share in the foundry's revenue had kept climbing and reached 54% in the third quarter. Conversely, Samsung actually experienced a slight QoQ drop of 0.1% in foundry revenue even though it had also benefited from the component demand related to the new iPhone series. Partially impacted by the weakening of the Korean won, Samsung's market share fell to 15.5%.

The multi-talent from Alphacool, the Eisbaer Pro Aurora CPU AIO has received an upgrade! It is now available with the extremely powerful NexXxos HPE radiator. This improvement enables even processors with particularly large CPU cores to be cooled even more effectively. The included mounting kit allows high compatibility with all common sockets, including the new AMD AM5.

The NexXxos HPE radiator uses the same materials as the previous NexXxos models, but goes a step further technically. Due to the condensed internal structure, the number of water channels and copper fins has been increased. Thus, a larger volume of water is in direct contact with the cooling fins and the heat transfer is improved enormously. Alphacool continues to use the Rise Aurora 120 mm fan. The fan, which can be controlled via PWM, is almost silent at 800 rpm, but still offers a good air throughput together with a high static pressure. The cooler as well as the fans feature digitally addressable RGB LEDs, allowing for a brilliant illumination.

Default (PR) SK hynix Develops MCR DIMM, World's Fastest Server Memory Module

SK hynix Inc. announced today that it has developed working samples of DDR5 Multiplexer Combined Ranks (MCR) Dual In-line Memory Module, the world's fastest server DRAM product. The new product has been confirmed to operate at the data rate of minimum 8 Gbps, and at least 80% faster than 4.8 Gbps of the existing DDR5 products. MCR DIMM is an achievement coming from out-of-the-box thinking with an aim to improve the operation speed of DDR5. Challenging the prevailing concept that the operation speed of DDR5 relies on that of DRAM chip itself, engineers sought to find a way to improve the speed of modules instead of chips for development of the latest product.

SK hynix designed the product in a way that enables simultaneous operation of two ranks by utilizing the data buffer installed onto the MCR DIMM based on Intel's MCR technology. By enabling simultaneous operation of two ranks, MCR DIMM allows transmission of 128 bytes of data to CPU at once, compared with 64 bytes fetched generally in conventional DRAM module. An increase in the amount of data sent to the CPU each time supports the data transfer rate of minimum 8 Gbps, twice as fast as a single DRAM.

(PR) Smartphone Production Fell to About 289 Million Units for 3Q22 as Demand Was Not Sufficient to Offset Inventory Pressure and Economic Headwinds
According to TrendForce's latest research, global smartphone production totaled around 289 million units for 3Q22, showing a slight QoQ drop of 0.9% and a YoY drop of 11%. The smartphone market thus exhibited an extremely weak demand situation as the "iron law" of positive growth in the third quarter was broken after being in effect for years. The contraction of smartphone production during this year's peak season was mainly attributed to smartphone brands giving priority to consumption of channel inventory for whole devices and maintaining a fairly conservative production plan for 3Q22. Moreover, they had kept lowering their production targets due to strong global economic headwinds.

Regarding the performances of the major smartphone brands in 3Q22, Samsung posted around 64.2 million units in device production, showing a QoQ increase of just 3.9%. This was the result of the brand scaling back production since 2Q22 and maintaining a conservative outlook on the future market situation. Due to persistent inventory pressure, Samsung is expected to again post a QoQ decline for 4Q22. In the aspect of product development, Samsung has been the leader in foldable smartphones. This year, the global market share of foldable smartphones is estimated to reach 1.1%; and within this segment, Samsung is expected to hold a market share of almost 90%. As for 2023, the global market share of foldable smartphones is forecasted to climb to 1.5%, and Samsung is forecasted to retain a market share of almost 80% in the segment.

ASRock and XFX Radeon RX 7900-series Custom Design Cards Leak
As we're getting closer to the official launch date, pictures of AMD Radeon RX 7900-series cards from both ASRock and XFX have tipped up online. The ASRock cards are part of its Phantom Gaming and Taichi series of cards, whereas the XFX card is part of the MERC line. Sadly none of the cards appear to sport a USB-C port, suggesting that it's not a feature that any of the OEM's have thought worthwhile to include in their custom board designs.

The ASRock Phantom Gaming cards appear to be 2.5-slot cards, whereas the Taichi cards are triple slot. The Phantom Gaming cards seem to be equipped with a short backplate that only covers the rear of the PCB, rather than the full length of the card, with the Taichi cards seemingly having a full-length backplate. The XFX MERC 310 also appears to be a 2.5-slot design, but it has a very different backplate design which appears to act much more as a heatsink than most backplate designs we've seen to date. The fact that it appears to be made of a large chunk of aluminium that wraps around the back edge of the card is also rather unusual. XFX also appears to have gone with the same size for its RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX cards. We can also see that XFX has gone for three 8-pin power connectors for their cards.

Seagate Mechanical HDD with U.2 NVMe Interface Pictured, Signals the Decline of SAS 12G
Here's one of the first pictures of a mechanical HDD with NVMe interface. Seagate is apparently in production of an Exos-series Enterprise HDD featuring U.2 NVMe interface where one would expect SAS 12 Gbps. We seriously doubt if the HDD is fast enough to take advantage of U.2 NVMe (at least 32 Gbps per direction), but the move to NVMe probably has to do with the decline of older interface standards such as SAS 12 Gbps and SATA 6 Gbps in the enterprise space for cold-storage, and that future generations of rackmount DAS and NAS enclosures could increasingly feature U.2 backplanes, phasing out SAS and SATA. This is like when optical drives switched over to SATA despite not needing the bandwidth SATA had to offer (optical discs barely move a few dozen MB/s, for which even ATA33 IDE was sufficient). We don't know how the Seagate Exos drive handles NVMe internally—whether there is a new native NVMe controller, or whether this is really just a SAS 12 Gbps drive with a PCIe-to-SAS bridge chip.

ICYMI, Intel Improved DirectX 9 API Performance for Arc "Alchemist" GPUs Spanning Several Popular Game Titles
Intel Arc "Alchemist" graphics architecture was originally developed as a forward-facing PC GPU architecture with many of the contemporary graphics technologies, including full DirectX 12 Ultimate support, however, the GPU curiously lacks hardware support for DirectX 9. Released 20 years ago, DirectX 9 continued to power AAA PC titles well into the 2010s as game console development lagged (the era of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3), and most e-sports titles of the time included either native or fallback DirectX 9 support for those on older GPUs. This is a problem for Intel, as many of the currently-popular e-Sports titles may still use DirectX 9, and so the Intel Graphics team set out to individually optimize DirectX 9 titles with each new Arc GPU driver release.

While Arc GPUs lack DirectX 9 support, foolproof API translation technologies exist, which convert DirectX 9 API instructions into DirectX 12. This is not fundamentally unlike how 32-bit applications work on 64-bit Windows (using WOW64 machine-architecture translation). This, however, requires per-game optimization to ensure any engine-level special features are correctly translated. With the latest 101.3959 Beta drivers, Intel optimized popular DirectX 9 titles "League of Legends," "Counter Strike: Global Offensive," "Starcraft 2," "Payday 2," "Guild Wars 2," "Stellaris," "NiZhan," and "Moonlight Blade." The company seems to be going about this the smart way, by relying on market analysis for selecting the games in need of optimization (understanding what DirectX 9 games are still being played).

First Alleged AMD Radeon RX 7900-series Benchmarks Leaked
With only a couple of days to go until the AMD RX 7900-series benchmarks go live, some alleged benchmarks from both the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT have leaked on Twitter. The two cards are being compared to a NVIDIA RTX 4080 card in no less than seven different game titles, all running at 4K resolution. The games are God of War, Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Watchdogs Legion, Red Dead Redemption 2, Doom Eternal and Horizon Zero Dawn. The cards were tested on a system with a Core i9-12900K CPU which was paired with 32 GB of RAM of unknown type.

It's too early to draw any real conclusions from this test, but in general, the RX 7900 XTX comes out on top, ahead of the RTX 4080, so no surprises here. The RX 7900 XT is either tied with the RTX 4080 or a fair bit slower, with the exception being Red Dead Redemption 2, where the RTX 4080 is the slowest card, although it also appears to have some issues, since the one percent lows are hitting 2 FPS. Soon, the reviews will be out and everything will become more clear, but it appears that AMD's RX 7900 XTX will give NVIDIA's RTX 4080 a run for its money, if these benchmarks are anything to go by.
