    Default Intel Aurora Supercomputer Will Touch 2 ExaFLOPs of Computational Powe

    Intel's Aurora supercomputer is a $500 million contract with the US Department of Energy to deliver an exascale supercomputer for Argonne National Laboratory. The project aims to build a machine capable of cranking over one ExaFLOP of computing at sustained workloads. The supercomputer aims to reach two ExaFLOPs of computing power once the installation system is completed and powered. The contract bound Intel to create accelerators that are powerful enough to achieve this magical number. However, they left Intel with room to do a little bit extra. With Ponte Vecchio GPU behind the project, it seems like the GPU is performing better than expected.



    According to Intel's CEO, Pat Gelsinger, the system will reach over 2 ExaFLOPs at peak and a bit below in sustained workloads. As per preliminary calculations done by The Next Platform, the system's estimations point towards 2.43 ExaFLOPs peak and around 1.7 ExaFLOPs in sustained workloads at Double-precision floating-point format math, aka FP64. The system will utilize Intel Xeon Sapphire Rapids processors with HBM memory and the powerful Ponte Vecchio GPU with 47 tiles and over 100 billion transistors.

    Default Intel's Next-Generation "Raptor Lake-S" Could Carry Over DDR4 Platform

    With Intel's Alder Lake processor generation launch, the platform merges support of two different DDR memory standards: DDR4 and DDR5. While there are motherboards that offer the latest DDR5 standard, there are boards that provide users to use the cheaper DDR4 memory option in their builds as we transition to the newer standard and newer memory becomes more available. The DDR5 products are currently on the expensive side, and DDR4 represents a good choice for creating a PC build in the following years, at least in the transition to DDR5 standard's better availability and lower prices.



    According to Moore's Law is Dead Twitter account, the DDR4 support may reside for a little longer on Intel's platforms. As per their sources, Intel's 13th generation Core processors, codenamed Raptor Lake, will carry over DDR4 platform support and possibly retain compatibility with the 12th generation Alder Lake platform. That means that the Z690 and future H670/B660/H610 boards could be compatible with Raptor Lake-S and also carry support for the DDR4 memory protocol for it. This could indicate that Alder Lake-S buyers that build PCs with DDR4 memory could have a viable processor upgrade path without upgrading the memory. Of course, information like this should be taken with a grain of salt.

    AMD Could Use Infinity Cache Branding for Chiplet 3D Vertical Cache
    AMD in its Computex 2021 presentation showed off its upcoming "Zen 3" CCD (CPU complex dies) featuring 64 MB of "3D vertical cache" memory on top of the 32 MB L3 cache. The die-on-die stacked contraption, AMD claims, provides an up to 15% gaming performance uplift, as well as significant improvements for enterprise applications that can benefit from the 96 MB of total last-level cache per chiplet. Ahead of the its debut later today in the company's rumored EPYC "Milan-X" enterprise processor reveal, we're learning that AMD could brand 3D Vertical Cache as "3D Infinity Cache."



    This came to light when Greymon55, a reliable source with AMD and NVIDIA leaks, used the term "3D IFC," and affirmed it to be "3D Infinity Cache." AMD realized that its GPUs and CPUs have a lot of untapped performance potential with use of large on-die caches that can make up for much of the hardware's memory-management optimization. The RDNA2 family of gaming GPUs feature up to 128 MB of on-die Infinite Cache memory operating at bandwidths as high as 16 Tbps, allowing AMD to stick to narrower 256-bit wide GDDR6 memory interfaces even on its highest-end RX 6900 XT graphics cards. For CCDs, this could mean added cushioning for data transfers between the CPU cores and the centralized memory controllers located in the sIOD (server I/O die) or cIOD (client I/O die in case of Ryzen parts).

    (PR) Xiaomi Introduces New Water Cooling Technology for Mobile Devices
    Xiaomi today unveiled its latest breakthrough in heat dissipation - Loop LiquidCool Technology. Inspired by cooling solutions used in the aerospace industry, Loop LiquidCool Technology utilizes a capillary effect which draws liquid cooling agent to the heat source, vaporizes, and then disperses the heat efficiently towards a cooler area, until the agent condenses and is captured via a unidirectional closed looped channel. Compared to conventional vapor chambers solutions, this new technology has twice the cooling capabilities and ranks as the most efficient smartphone cooling solution. Xiaomi aims to bring Loop LiquidCool Technology to its products in H2 2022.



    This new technology features an annular heat pipe system that is composed of an evaporator, a condenser, a refill chamber, as well as gas and liquid pipes. Placed at heat sources, the evaporator has refrigerant that evaporates to gas when the smartphone is under high workload. The gas and airflow is then diffused to the condenser, where the gas condenses into liquid again. These liquids are absorbed and collected through tiny fibers in the refill chamber—which refills the evaporator—making it a self-sustaining system.

    Intel Core i5-12400F Allegedly Offers Ryzen 5 5600X Performance for 200 USD
    Intel has recently released their first 12th Gen Core desktop processors with the 125 W TDP K-Series and they appear to be preparing to launch the mid-range 65 W TDP chips in the coming months. The i5-12400F is set to feature 6 cores and threads consisting entirely of high-performance cores without any efficiency cores as found in the existing lineup. The processor features a peak single-core clock speed of 4.4 GHz, while multi-core speeds are 4.0 GHz and 3.4 GHz at PL2 and PL1 power limits respectively. The chip features a 65 W TDP/PL1 power rating and an apparent Maximum Turbo Power PL2 value of 117 W.



    This processor has reportedly been tested by French publication Comptoir Hardware where it consistently matched or surpassed the Ryzen 5 5600X in synthetic and gaming benchmarks. These benchmarks were run on Windows 11 with DDR5 memory running at an unspecified speed and an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT GPU. We have recently seen a listing for the processor at a Canadian retailer which lists the i5-12400F for 249 CAD (200 USD) which if true would be a sizable jump from the 157 USD price of its predecessor but still significantly under the 280 USD Ryzen 5 5600X. The Intel Core i5-12400F is expected to be officially announced sometime in January 2022 possibly at CES 2022.

    Early Signs of AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Price Cuts Emerge
    Performance reviews of the Intel 12th Gen Core "Alder Lake-S" processors are out, and spell big trouble for AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors at their current prices. Until the company can refresh these processors, it must content with price-cuts. Early signs of these are already out. American retailer Micro Center just put out a sub-$300 price for the Ryzen 7 5800X, at $299. Prices of the Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 5 5600X remain unchanged, at $500 and $280, respectively, but it's only conceivable that these too will change. At current prices, the Core i7-12700K offers 15% higher performance per Dollar than the Ryzen 7 5800X.

    Default Intel Disables DirectX 12 API Loading on Haswell Processors

    Intel's fourth-generation Core processors, codenamed Haswell, are subject to new security exploits. According to the company, a vulnerability exists inside the graphics controller of 4th generation Haswell processors, happening once the DirectX 12 API loading occurs. To fix the problem, Intel has found that disabling this API results in a fix. Starting with Intel graphics driver 15.40.44.5107 applications that run exclusively on DirectX 12 API no longer work with the following Intel Graphics Controllers: Intel Iris Pro Graphics 5200/5100, HD Graphics 5000/4600/4400/4200, and Intel Pentium and Celeron Processors with Intel HD Graphics based on 4th Generation Intel Core.



    "A potential security vulnerability in Intel Graphics may allow escalation of privilege on 4th Generation Intel Core processors. Intel has released a software update to mitigate this potential vulnerability. In order to mitigate the vulnerability, DirectX 12 capabilities were deprecated." says the Intel page. If a user with a Haswell processor has a specific need to run the DirectX 12 application, they can downgrade their graphics driver to version 15.40.42.5063 or older.

    (PR) Annual DRAM Revenue for 2022 Expected to Reach US$91.5 Billion, with Prices Likely to Rally in 2H22, Says TrendForce
    Despite the forecasted 18.6% YoY growth in total DRAM bit supply next year, the global DRAM market is still expected to shift from a shortage situation to an oversupply, according to TrendForce's latest investigations. This shift can primarily be attributed to the fact that, not only are most buyers now carrying a relatively high level of DRAM inventory, but DRAM bit demand is also expected to increase by only 17.1% YoY in 2022. On the price front, the oversupply situation will result in a drop in DRAM ASP in 2022 but not a major decline in annual DRAM revenue, thanks to the oligopolistic nature of the DRAM industry. Annual DRAM revenue for 2022 is expected to reach US$91.54 billion, which represents a slight YoY increase of 0.3%.



    Based on an analysis of DRAM sufficiency ratio (which refers to the surplus of supply in comparison with demand) for each quarter in 2022, TrendForce forecasts a 15% YoY decrease in DRAM ASP for 2022, with prices undergoing the more noticeable declines during the first half of the year. Heading into 2H22, however, owing to the rise in DDR5 penetration rate, as well as the arrival of peak seasonal demand, the decline in DRAM ASP will likely narrow. TrendForce does not rule out the possibility that DRAM ASP may even hold flat or undergo an increase in 2H22.

    MediaTek Announces Flagship Dimensity 9000 5G SoC on TSMC 4 nm
    A few years ago, MediaTek decided to leave the high-end mobile device SoC space as it decided to focus on the mid-range and entry level market, but as of today, that is no longer the case. The company has announced its new flagship Dimensity 9000 SoC and it packs all the latest cutting edge mobile SoC features you'd expect to see.



    The Dimensity 9000 is based entirely on the new Arm v9 architecture and the chip itself is built in TSMC's 4 nm node, which gives MediaTek a lead on all its competitors, but Apple. As for the Arm cores in question, the main core is a Cortex-X2 at 3.05 GHz, which is accompanied by three Cortex-A710 cores at 2.85 GHz and four power efficient Cortex-A510 cores at 1.8 GHz.     Innosilicon's Fenghua GPU Based on Imagination Technologies IMG-B Series GPU Cores
    The somewhat surprise announcement of the Innosilicon Fenghua No.1 server graphics card took many by surprise, but it seems like much of the tech media, us included, weren't paying attention, as there were hints about this card over a year ago. It came from no-one other than Imagination Technologies CMO, David Harold, in an official blog post that was posted on the 13th of October 2020.



    The blog post was titled "Back in the high-performance game" and in it David Harold was reminiscing about his close to 20 years at Imigationation Technologies and how the company had started out in the 3D accelerator business with the Kyro "GPU". He goes on to mention last year's IMG A-Series GPU and then moves on to the new IMG-B Series and mentions how it's the 11th generation of the PowerVR architecture and how it has 70 percent higher compute density compared to existing desktop GPUs. He also mentions that Imagination Technologies has five customers working on products for the desktop, performance laptop and "cloud spaces" based on the PowerVR architecture and then goes on to mention Innosilicon by name and pointing out that they have just launched an IMG-B Series BXT multi-core GPU in an add-in card form-factor.

    (PR) India PC Market Ships 4.5 Million Units in 3Q21, Reports All-Time High Shipments, According to IDC
    The India traditional PC market (inclusive of desktops, notebooks, and workstations) continued its growth momentum despite ongoing supply and logistical challenges. The traditional PC shipments witnessed a 30% year-over-year (YoY) growth in 3Q21 (Jul-Sep), marking the fifth consecutive quarter of growth in India, according to new data from the International Data Corporation 's (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. A total of 4.5 million PCs were shipped during the quarter, making it India's biggest-ever single quarter. To put this in perspective, it is bigger than the total yearly consumer shipments in 2019, a year before the pandemic hit us. As a result, many brands also reported their biggest quarter of PC shipments.



    Notebook PCs continue to dominate the overall category with more than 80% share. Enterprise and consumer demand helped the Notebook category to reach over 3 million units for the first time, and the desktop category also continued its upward momentum as it grew by 30.5% YoY in 3Q21.

    Intel Core i7-12700H Beats Ryzen 9 5900HX by 47% In Leaked Cinebench Scores
    Intel is expected to announce their Alder Lake mobile processors in Q1 2022 with rumors and leaks for several of these chips already surfacing. The i7-12700H has recently been spotted running Cinebench on what could possibly be an MSI GE76 Raider 12UH with the results showing impressive performance gains. The processor features six Golden Cove (P) cores and eight Gracemont (E) cores for a total of 14 cores and 20 threads.



    The i7-12700H includes a configurable base TDP of 35 W - 45 W and this specific sample was running at a reported base frequency of 2.9 GHz during testing. The processor scored 689 points in Cinebench R20 single-core which places it 12% faster than the Core i9-11950H and 21% faster than AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 5900HX. The processor widens this gap in Cinebench R20 multi-core with a score of 7158 points placing it 47% above the 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen 9 5900HX. We can also see that multi-core performance is 49% faster than the recently released Apple M1 Max in Cinebench R23. AMD is preparing their Ryzen 6000 processors for an early 2022 launch which will be competing with these Alder Lake chips but we have yet to see many performance leaks for them to compare with.

    AMD to Steer Motherboard Partners Away from Intel WLAN, Toward MediaTek Co-branded Ones
    Intel has dominated the client Wi-Fi + Bluetooth network adapter market in the PC space for some time now, particularly with WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E interfaces integrated with motherboards. Even on the AMD platform, motherboard vendors have extensively packaged not just Intel-branded WiFi + Bluetooth modules, but also their wired LAN controllers. In the commercial desktop and commercial notebook markets, Intel leverages this position to push its vPro management suite, with Intel WLAN controllers featuring vPro support. This is something felt lacking in the rival AMD PRO ecosystem, and something the company is looking to change with its collaboration with MediaTek.



    AMD RZ660 will be the first controller based on this partnership. Based on the MediaTek Filogic 330P chipset, the controller combines WiFi 6E (6 GHz), with the latest generation Bluetooth (at least Bluetooth 5.2). Driver software and support for this solution will be handled by AMD, as would distribution. MediaTek stated that the first notebooks and desktop PCs (includes DIY motherboards) featuring the AMD RZ660 will debut in 2022. The AMD-supplied driver software would also enable the company to create special "PRO" variants of the RZ660 to bundle with its Ryzen PRO SoCs for the commercial PC and workstation markets. There doesn't appear to be any such collaboration with wired Ethernet, as there is an even competition between Intel and Realtek over the 2.5 GbE PHY market, with both companies offering gaming-specific variants—Intel Killer and Realtek DragonLAN.

    Chinese company Innosilicon Technology has recently announced their Fenghua No.1 high-performance server graphics card. The card features a dual-fan cooling design with HDMI 2.1 and Embedded DisplayPort 1.4 video connectors. The card will utilize a PCIe 4.0 connector and features GDDR6X memory developed by Innosilicon Technology with potential speeds of 21 Gbps. We have seen announcements from Chinese companies with similar products in the past but this recent announcement is the first to include support for a variety of graphics APIs including DirectX. The press release from the company didn't specify the DirectX version supported but also noted that the card will support OpenGL, OpenGLES, OpenCL, and Vulkan which will enable VR, AR, and AI applications.

    TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co have recently announced plans to release a 4K 32-inch 240 Hz curved panel for use in gaming monitors at the Global Display Tech-Ecosystem Conference (DTC 2021). This new panel would be the fastest available in any 4K gaming monitor, while details are limited the 32" UD 240Hz R800 Gaming Display is expected to include 1 ms response times and a proprietary image compression algorithm. The monitor is unlikely to be sold directly by TCL as the company usually sells unbranded monitors to OEMs for customization such as with their current 144 Hz 4K monitors. The pricing and availability details were also not announced by TCL so it could be some time until you can purchase one of these monitors.

    Default Intel "Meteor Lake" Chips Already Being Built at the Arizona Fab

    With its 12th Gen Core "Alder Lake-P" mobile processors still on the horizon, Intel is already building test batches of the 14th Gen "Meteor Lake" mobile processors, at its Fab 42 facility in Chandler, Arizona. "Meteor Lake" is a multi-chip module that leverages Intel's Foveros packaging technology to combine "tiles" (purpose built dies) based on different silicon fabrication processes depending on their function and transistor-density/power requirements. It combines four distinct tiles across a single package—the compute tile, with the CPU cores; the graphics tile with the iGPU: the SoC I/O tile, which handles the processor's platform I/O; and a fourth tile, which is currently unknown. This could be a memory stack with similar functions as the HBM stacks on "Sapphire Rapids," or something entirely different.



    The compute tile contains the processor's various CPU core types. The P cores are "Redwood Cove," which are two generations ahead of the current "Golden Cove." If Intel's 12-20% generational IPC uplift cadence holds, we're looking at cores with up to 30% higher IPC than "Golden Cove" (50-60% higher than "Skylake."). "Meteor Lake" also debuts Intel's next-generation E-core, codenamed "Crestmont." The compute tile is rumored to be fabricated on the Intel 4 node (optically a 7 nm-class node, but with characteristics similar to TSMC N5).

    Report: DDR5 Already Facing Production Issues In Wake of Global Chip Shortages
    DDR5 may soon have reason to be an even more expensive early-adopter piece of tech than it currently is, according to electronic component supplier 12chip. While semiconductor manufacturers worldwide grapple with logistics and components shortages, the DRAM market has been left somewhat unscathed - up to now. DRAM fabrication - even DDR5 - isn't done on leading-edge nodes but on older, more mature ones (such as 14 nm). According to 12chip, manufacturers are having no problem in scaling their DRAM manufacturing on these older nodes to meet demand.



    However, DDR5 is being directly impacted by the current logistics issues due to lack of adequate Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) chips - which DDR5 has integrated in the DIMM proper. Currently, lead times for PMIC orders are estimated at 35 weeks, placing additional strain on system assemblers and DRAM manufacturers - and forcing delays and bottlenecks throughout the supply chain. Additionally, the fact that PMIC chips for DDR5 are ten times as expensive as equivalent DDR4 power management solutions doesn't bode well for future price action on DDR. Should this situation continue, higher prices for DDR5 modules are to be expected due to a deteriorating supply/demand ratio - particularly relevant if you're thinking about putting together a build based on Intel's Alder Lake platform. As always, take this report with a grain of salt.

    NVIDIA today reported record revenue for the third quarter ended October 31, 2021, of $7.10 billion, up 50 percent from a year earlier and up 9 percent from the previous quarter, with record revenue from the company's Gaming, Data Center and Professional Visualization market platforms. GAAP earnings per diluted share for the quarter were $0.97, up 83 percent from a year ago and up 3 percent from the previous quarter. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $1.17, up 60 percent from a year ago and up 13 percent from the previous quarter.

In response to the development of 5G communication and the increasing demand for smart edge computing, TEAMGROUP today has announced two industrial-grade M.2 PCIe solid-state drives equipped with patented heat dissipating modules, the N75A-M80 and N75G-M80.     AMD Expected to See 65 Percent Growth Rate in Sales for 2021, Intel Down One Percent
    According to an industry report by IC Insights, AMD will see a yearly growth rate of no less than 65 percent this year, compared to 2020, whereas Intel is expected to have a slightly negative growth rate of one percent. The report includes the top 25 semiconductor sales leaders, ranked by growth rate, although it should be pointed out that some of them are foundries and not just semiconductor companies.



    AMD is closely followed by MediaTek, which is expected to reach a 60 percent growth rate this year, followed by Nvidia at 54 percent and Qualcomm and 51 percent growth. The only surprise in the top five is PRC based SMIC, which saw a 39 percent growth this year, despite, or maybe because of the US sanctions against various Chinese IC makers.

    (PR) 2021 Annual Global Power Management IC Prices Jump 10%, Supply Remains Tight for 1H22, Says TrendForce

Average selling price (ASP) for 1H22 is forecast to increase by nearly 10%, reaching a record six year high.

    AOC Launches 43-inch 4K 144 Hz HDR 1000 Gaming Display
    The large screen gaming market has grown by yet another model in the shape of the AOC G4309VX/D, which is built around a 43-inch VA panel with a resolution of 3840 x 2160. The display is rated at HDR 1000, although the peak SDR brightness lands at 720 cd/m², which is still very bright considering the size of the display.



    The refresh rate tops out at 144 Hz and the response time is said to be 1 ms, via the DP 1.4 port using DSC or the two HDMI 2.1 ports. There's support for adaptive sync and motion blur reduction, which should make this a good choice for both PC and console gaming. The G4309VX/D also features four USB 3.0 ports, or USB 3.2 gen 1 if you prefer. It should be noted that there appears to be two different versions of this display, with the G4309VX currently selling for around US$1,300 in Taiwan, but it lacks HDMI 2.1, although the rest of the spec appears to be near identical. No word on pricing for the G4309VX/D as yet, but we'd expect it to end up in a similar price bracket.

    Qualcomm CEO Expects Chip Shortage To Ease in 2022
    Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has claimed that the global chip shortage is easing with the situation expected to improve further in 2022. The availability of chips in 2022 should be significantly improved compared to 2020 Cristiano Amon told reporters in South Korea on Thursday. Qualcomm has struggled to meet the demand for its smartphone processors which has resulted in reduced smartphone production. The next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor recently announced by the company will be manufactured on Samsung Foundry's 4 nm node with the yield rate ultimately determining Qualcomm's ability to meet demand in 2022. This prediction is slightly more optimistic than other companies including Intel and IBM who don't expect the shortage to be resolved until 2023.

    Valve Unveils Steam Deck Final Packaging & Carry Case
    Valve has recently completed the final Design Validation (DV) prototype for the Steam Deck incorporating improvements from the previous EV2 builds. This latest design revision also sees the confirmation of retail packaging for the device which consists of a simple cardboard box with a region-specific power supply, Steam Deck, carry case, and setup instructions. The portable carrying case for the 64 GB and 256 GB models was also shown with the 512 GB version set to receive a unique version. The Valve Steam Deck features an AMD Zen 2 processor with integrated RDNA 2 graphics and is available to pre-order at 399 USD for the 64 GB base model with new orders not expected to ship until Q2 2022. Valve will begin shipping these DV kits to game developers shortly allowing them to optimize their titles for the device before it begins shipping in February 2022.

    AMD and Intel Announce Online Press Events on January 4, 2022
    January 4, 2022 could be a date of major product announcements by both AMD and Intel as part of their International CES 2022 plans. Both companies will host virtual press-meets on that day, and are expected to unveil several product lines. AMD could shed more like on its Ryzen "Vermeer-S" Socket AM4 desktop processors, possible updates to its Ryzen 5000 mobile product stack; as well as put out some juicy nuggets of info on its future "Zen 4" processors; while Intel will significantly expand its 12th Gen Core "Alder Lake" family across both its desktop and mobile segments, along with more info on its Arc "Alchemist" gaming GPU.     Intel Prepares Raptor Lake Designs With 24 Cores and 32 Threads, More E-Cores This Time
    With the launch of Intel's Alder Lake processors, Intel has switched from a homogeneous to a heterogeneous design of processors, where smaller, high-efficiency cores are mixed with high-performance cores to create a highly efficient and high-performance processor for all kinds of workloads. And it seems like Intel is not over with adding more E-cores to its future products, as the latest leaks suggest. According to the BAPCO's Crossmark benchmark database, Intel's upcoming Raptor Lake processors will feature more E-cores than the high-performance P-cores in the SoC design. As to why this design choice is present, we are not sure and don't have a definitive answer.



    E-Cores are suitable for background tasks, and adding more would potentially leave space for P-cores to do heavier workloads. In the benchmark submission, which is now offline, the samples used were a configuration with eight P-cores and sixteen E-cores. Since the big cores are hyperthreaded, it makes up for a total composition of 24 cores with 32 threads. The platform "RPL-S ADP-S DDR5 UDIMM OC CRB" was used with DDR5-4800 memory, indicating an early stage engineering sample with a probably unfinished memory controller. The Raptor Lake generation will also use LGA 1700 socket, DDR5 memory and be present in the desktop and mobile sector once it launches in Q4 of 2022. It will also use Intel's 7 semiconductor manufacturing process, similar to Alder Lake. The only difference with the next-generation design is the updated Raptor Cove core design that brings a significant IPC uplift.

    Default AeroCool Intros Raven 4 ARGB Cooler

    AeroCool today introduced the Raven 4 ARGB, a tower-type CPU cooler that relies on a custom design 120 mm fan. The cooler uses a typical aluminium fin-stack heatsink design. Four 6 mm-thick nickel-plated copper heat pipes make direct contact with the CPU at the base, conveying heat through the aluminium fin-stack. This is ventilated by the 120 mm fan, with a unique frame design that guides airflow such that it envelopes the fin-stack along all sides.



    The fan takes in a 4-pin PWM connection for its main function, and 3-pin ARGB for its lighting. The fan turns at speeds ranging between 900 to 1,800 RPM, pushing 24.1 to 58 CFM of airflow, with a noise output ranging between 18 to 27 dBA. The fan uses a hydraulic bearing rated for 60,000 hours. The cooler measures 125 mm x 80 mm x 135 mm (WxDxH). Among the CPU socket types supported are LGA1700, LGA1200, LGA115x, and AM4.

    MSI MEG Z690 GODLIKE Motherboard to Bundle AIO Cooler and Memory Sticks
    The retail version of MSI MEG Z690 GODLIKE, the company's flagship Socket LGA1700 motherboard, will include an all-in-one liquid CPU cooler, and DDR5 memory sticks. Snapped at a PC retailer, the front-face of the retail box of the motherboard reads that the contents include an MSI MEG CoreLiquid S360 cooler, and Kingston FURY Beast DDR5 memory. The size and speed of the memory is not mentioned. What's also unknown at this point, is whether the board comes in retail packages that don't bundle the cooler or memory. Assuming the bundled memory is a 32 GB (2x 16 GB) kit of decent specs, such as DDR5-6000, this motherboard could easily command a four-figure price, with speculative prices averaging $1,500.

    AMD today released Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.12.1. These drivers add optimization for "Halo Infinite," with up to 17% increase in frame-rates measured on the RX 6900 XT, at 4K Ultra settings over the previous driver version; up to 19% increase measured with the RX 6800 XT, and up to 16% measured with the RX 6700 XT. Optimization is also added for "Icarus" and Blender 3.0 on RX 6000 series graphics cards. Among the fixes include a SteamVR Home noticed on the Radeon VII; driver time-outs noticed with the RX 5500 XT in "Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy;" Radeon Software becoming unresponsive with PUBG on multi-display mode with extended display; and artifacting noticed in "Forza Horizon 5" with the car models on cards such as the RX 500 series.

    UMC is Feeling the Pressure from Chinese Foundries
    The chip shortage discussion has been very focused on TSMC for some reason and although the company is without a doubt the world's leading foundry, the company is making its living from being a cutting edge foundry, whereas much of the components that there's a shortage of are made on far older nodes at many different foundries. Taiwanese UMC is one of the foundries that makes many of the automotive semiconductors, as well as key components when it comes to power regulation and is considered the world's third largest foundry.



    Until 2018, UMC was competing head on with TSMC, although the company was always about a node behind TSMC, which led to a management team decision to slow down its node transition and instead to focus on speciality technologies. The company has done well in this niche, with a revenue of about US$6.2 billion in 2020. However, UMC is starting to feel the pressure from its competitors in China, as the PRC government is making a push for local production of local IC designs.

    Intel Negotiates 3nm Allocation with TSMC Even as Pat Gelsinger Cautions Against Investing in Taiwan
    Intel is reportedly in talks with TSMC to secure foundry allocation to meet its product roadmap execution. The company is sending an executive delegation to meet with TSMC later this month, to secure foundry capacity for the N3 (3 nm) silicon fabrication node, and ensure that Intel's allocation isn't affected by other customers such as Apple. As part of its IDM 2.0 strategy, Intel has decided to build its products essentially as multi-chip modules with each block of IP built on a silicon fabrication node most optimal to it, so the company maximizes cutting-edge foundry nodes only on the technology that benefits from it the most. N3 will play a vital role with logic/compute tiles in products bound for 2023, as N3 hits critical volume in the first half of the year.



    In related news, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger speaking at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference, stressed on the importance for American chip designers to seek out semiconductor manufacturing in America, and cautioned against investing in Taiwan (without naming TSMC). This comes in the wake of geopolitical uncertainty in the region. In response to this statement issued to DigiTimes, TSMC CEO Mark Liu downplayed the matter, and said that Gelsinger's statement wasn't worth responding to, and that he doesn't slander industry colleagues. TSMC and Samsung have each announced multi-billion Dollar foundry investments in the US, in attempts to make the global semiconductor supply chains resilient to any security situation that may emerge in East Asia.

    (PR) Graphics add-in board market reached $13.7 billion for Q3'21 showing double-digit growth year-2-year
    According to a new research report from the analyst firm Jon Peddie Research, unit shipments of add-in boards increased in Q3'21 from last year. AMD saw a one-percent increase in market share while Nvidia remained the dominant market share leader with 78.2%. Year over year, total AIB shipments increased by 25.7% this quarter compared to last year at 12.7 million units, and up quarter-to-quarter from 11.47 million units in Q2'21.



    Add-in boards (AIBs) use discrete GPUs (dGPU) with dedicated memory. Desktop PCs, workstations, servers, rendering and mining farms, and scientific instruments use AIBs. Consumers and enterprises buy AIBs from resellers or OEMs. They can be part of a new system or installed as an upgrade to an existing system. Systems with AIBs represent the higher end of the graphics industry. Entry-level systems use integrated GPUs (iGPU) in CPUs that share slower system memory.

    Synology Teases RT6600ax Router With 5.9 GHz UNII-4 Support
    When it comes to routers, Synology might not be the first brand that springs to mind, but the company has produced some interesting routers, especially when you take into account its custom OS, the Synology Router Manager, or SRM for short. The company has teased a new addition to its small family of routers, which should launch at some point in the first quarter of next year, that brings with it a few interesting features.



    The RT6600ax as it's called, will be one of the first routers to support the UNII-4 WiFi band, also known as the 5.9 GHz band. This is an extension of the 802.11ax/WiFi 6 band and it's not related to WiFi 6E which uses the 6 GHz band. UNII-4 only adds a total of four 20 MHz WiFi channels, but the key here is that it allows for a third 160 MHz wide channel, something that could be handy in congested locations. For now, UNII-4 is only going to be usable in the US, although more countries are likely to be considering opening up the extra frequencies for WiFi usage. That said, it's unlikely that Europe and Japan will allow it, since neither region supports the UNII-3 frequency band.

    BadgerDAO Sees $120 Million Crypto Heist via Cloudflare Hack
    BadgerDAO, "one of the most security-minded DAOs in operation", has been hit with a cryptocurrency heist enabled via a JavaScript hack on their website. BadgerDAO enables Bitcoin holders to "bridge" their cryptocurrency over to the smart-contract and DeFi-enabled Ethereum platform via its token, thus allowing access to the world of decentralized finance. After preliminary investigations aided by blockchain security and data analytics Peckshield, it seems that the bad actors inserted a malicious script in the BadgerDAO website - in turn intercepting Web 3.0 transactions and inserting a request to transfer the victim's tokens to the attacker's chosen address. It's currently estimated that around $120 million were siphoned off via this attack. A single transfer saw 896 Bitcoin being diverted this way - a cool $50 million.



    As soon as BadgerDAO became aware of suspect wallet activity, the company immediately froze all smart contracts running in its platform - a way to stem the bleeding until the security audit could be conducted. Thursday night, BadgerDAO announced it had "retained data forensics experts Chainalysis to explore the full scale of the incident & authorities in both the US & Canada have been informed & Badger is cooperating fully with external investigations as well as proceeding with its own."

    Windows 11 a Flop, Survey Claims Less Than 1% Upgraded, Microsoft Improves Start Menu
    Microsoft Windows 11, now nearing its third month since release, is for all intents and purposes, a flop. Market research by Lansweeper, which surveyed over 10 million PCs across the commercial and personal market segments, reports that less than 0.21% of the users it surveyed, had upgraded from Windows 10 to the newer operating system. The upgrade is free of charge. There may be several factors contributing to this lukewarm market response, but one of them is certain to he the steep hardware requirements. Windows 11 requires a trusted platform module (TPM 2.0), which disqualifies PCs older than 2018 for upgrades, unless the user is willing to try out workarounds to the limitation. Another factor could be the clunky user interface (UI), a less functional Start menu than Windows 10, and several UI-related bugs.



    According to Lansweeper's data, there could be more people running outdated Windows XP, Vista, Windows 8, etc., than Windows 11, and this poses a great security risk, as these operating systems are no longer supported by Microsoft for regular security updates. Windows 10, on the other hand, is eligible for them until mid-2025—plenty of time for people to upgrade hardware to meet Windows 11 system requirements, or to simply make up their mind on switching over to the new operating system. In related news, Microsoft could give the Windows 11 Start menu a functional update. Test build 22509 introduces the ability to add more pins to the menu, or make room for more recommendations. The UI could see many such minor updates.

    Access to Xbox Game Pass Worth $6,300 in Games for 2021
    Microsoft is well on its way towards becoming the Netflix of videogames, considering the running success of its Game Pass subscription service. The idea is simple: players pay a monthly fee (starting at $9,99 for PC or Xbox-specific subscriptions) and they receive access to a curated portfolio of game experiences. The platform is bolstered by the fact that Microsoft's first-party titles are made available day-one for Games Pass subscribers. In 2021 alone, this approach by Microsoft gave gamers access to games like Halo Infinite, Age of Empires 4, Forza Horizon 5, and the incredibly quirky Psychonauts 2. But is it worth it to have a Games Pass subscription, thus waiving ownership of those actual games?



    Your mileage will certainly vary; but in pure dollar terms, it's difficult to argue against the idea. According to The Loadout, Games Pass subscribers were given access to around $6,300 worth of games throughout 2021 - that's how much a consumer would have to pay, day one, to own all of the games that Microsoft included (and sometimes rotated out) of its Game Pass library. A yearly Game Pass Ultimate subscription (for PC and Xbox games) would give you access to the same cadre of titles for a much more modest $15 a month - $180 in total. In March alone, Games Pass subscribers saw the floodgates open to around $960 worth of games (and potentially thousands of hours of gameplay) with the addition of Bethesda Softwork's titles to the service, following the $7,5 billion Microsoft acquisition of parent company Zenimax Media.

    Researchers at TU Wien have Developed Adaptive Transistor Using Germanium
    Transistors as we know them appear to be in for a big change, at least if the latest development by researchers at TU Wien has anything to say about it. The group of researchers have developed what they call an adaptive transistor, or in other words, a transistor that can do more than hold a 0 or a 1. This has huge implications and although they're currently at a very early stage, the working proof of concept could allow for a whole new range of applications for microchips.



    It would appear that the new transistors are tricky to manufacture, based on the explanation by the researchers "We connect two electrodes with an extremely thin wire made of germanium, via extremely clean high-quality interfaces. Above the germanium segment, we place a gate electrode like the ones found in conventional transistors. What is decisive is that our transistor features a further control electrode, which is placed on the interfaces between germanium and metal. It can dynamically program the function of the transistor". The researchers are confident that this should be fairly straightforward to overcome, especially as their transistor doesn't require any "doping", something that is common with more complex transistors today.

    Intel Bans Chinese Components from Xinjiang Province, Turns Around and Apologises to China
    In a very confusing move, Intel has informed its suppliers that it won't accept components that have been made in or by labour from the Xinjiang Province in China, only to turn around almost instantly and apologise to China for the fact that it has done so. That said, Intel doesn't appear to have changed its mind, the company simply apologised due to the backlash from Chinese citizens, who are threatening to boycott Intel products.



    Part of the reasoning behind the ban of components from the Xinjiang Province is said to be due to US laws and is apparently not entirely in line with Intel's own views on the situation. A statement from Intel said "We apologize for the distress caused to our esteemed Chinese customers, partners and the general public," although it's unclear if this is going to be enough to calm the Chinese public, which tend to be able to stir up quite a lot of trouble for foreign companies in China that are seem to be anti China.

    Intel Said to be Considering Italy for European Chip Packaging Plant
    Although Intel has already announced that it won't be making any decision with regards to its investments in Europe this year, new rumours courtesy of Reuters are now suggesting that Intel is eyeing Italy for an investment of €4 to €8 billion for a new, advanced semiconductor chip packaging plant. This largely leaves Germany and France as the options for Intel's so called "megafab" that the company is planning to build in Europe over the next few years.



    Intel has already said it would invest around US$7 billion for a similar chip packaging plan in Penang, Malaysia, a location where Intel already has a chip packaging facility. When contacted by Reuters, Intel said "We are encouraged by the many possibilities to support the EU's digital agenda and 2030 semiconductor ambitions. While current negotiations are ongoing and confidential, we plan to make an announcement as soon as possible." The Italian government is also said to have some concerns with regards to how many jobs the plant will actually create, as well as what the energy costs will be, which could throw a spanner in the works if Intel doesn't provide the right answers.

    AMD and GlobalFoundries Renew Wafer Supply Agreement
    AMD in its 8-K filing with the SEC, disclosed that it has updated its wafer supply agreement (WSA) with GlobalFoundries. Under the latest agreement, AMD commits to buy $2.1 billion worth wafers from GlobalFoundries between 2022 and 2025. The previous version of the WSA saw commitments up to 2024, and wafers worth $1.6 billion. The update hence adds another year and $500 million worth supply.



    AMD currently sources 12 nm and 14 nm wafers from GlobalFoundries, which go into making cIOD and sIOD components in its processors, and motherboard chipsets. The move to extend the WSA indicates that the company may continue to use 12 nm-class I/O dies in its processors for the foreseeable future. It will be very interesting to see if 12 nm-class I/O dies make it to next-generation products such as "Genoa" and "Rapael," which integrate the latest IP blocks such as PCI-Express Gen 5 root-complexes, DDR5 memory controllers, and 3rd Gen Infinity Fabric. Processors with 12 nm I/O dies, such as "Milan" and "Vermeer" could be retired only by 2023-24, as AMD will use 2022 to spread across its next-gen product launches.

    Leaked Document Confirms That MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X Graphics Card Launches January 27th
    In the past few months, we have heard rumors of NVIDIA launching an upgraded version of the GA102 silicon called GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. The upgraded version is supposed to max out the chip and bring additional performance to the table. According to anonymous sources of VideoCardz, MSI, one of NVIDIA's add-in board (AIB) partners, is preparing to update its SUPRIM X lineup of graphics cards with the MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X GPU, scheduled for January 27th launch date. This suggests that the official NDA lifts for these RTX 3090 Ti GPUs on January 27th, meaning that we could see AIBs teasing their models very soon.



    As a general reminder, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card should use a GA102-350 silicon SKU with 84 SMs, 10752 CUDA cores, 336 TMUs, 24 GB of GDDR6X memory running on a 384-bit bus at 21 Gbps speed with 1008 GB/s bandwidth, and a TBP of a whopping 450 Watts. If these specifications remain valid, the GPU could become the top contender in the market, however, with a massive drawback of pulling nearly half a KiloWatt of power.

    CES Organizer Claims Chip Shortage, Not Covid is Keeping Exhibitors at Home
    January 5th is when CES 2022 is set to kick off and we've already seen reports of several big brands cancelling their attendance, but according to the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) who are the organisers behind CES, it's not because of Covid, but rather due to the chip shortage. The fact that most countries have imposed travel restrictions and even gone into fairly strict lockdowns seems to have eluded the CTA as its CEO claims exhibitors aren't overly concerned about the virus.



    Instead, the reasoning by the CTA CEO goes along the lines of the chip shortage causing issues with prototypes and product samples, so the companies that were planning to attend CES won't have any products to showcase. This seems like some very strange logic, since from what we've seen so far, prototypes and product samples don't seem to be a major concern. That said, the CTA is correct that logistics are going to be a nightmare this year, as shipping delays are not uncommon and are likely to cause bigger problems for the exhibitors this year than anything else. TPU is still expecting to be on location in Las Vegas for next year's show, unless something changes drastically in the next week and half.

    AMD Threadripper Pro 5000 Series Spec Leaks
    There has been some discussion as to whether or not AMD would launch any Zen 3 based Threadripper processors or not, considering that the desktop processors have been out for well over a year by now. According to igor's Lab, we now know that AMD is very close to launching some new 5000-series Threadripper Pro CPU's—codename Chagall—that fits into AMD's sWRX8 socket, which is intended for high-end workstations and servers.



    It appears AMD is planning to launch five new CPUs, namely the 5995WX, 5975WX, 5965WX, 5955WX and 5945WX. All of the CPUs appear to have a maximum, single core boost clock of 4550 MHz and range from 12 to 64 cores, with a TDP of 280 W and a power range of 170 to 260 Watts. Up to eight channels of DDR4 3200 MHz is supported and up to 128 PCIe 4.0 are expected to be featured as well. For those hoping there would be an HEDT version, we have bad news, as based on what we've found out independently and the information provided by igor's Lab, there won't be any HEDT Chagall CPUs, at least not at this point in time. This means that the upgrade path for sTRX4 motherboards ended up being as bad as for the older TR4 motherboards, as AMD has now abandoned two HEDT platforms in a row.

    Default AMD Explores Adding Ryzen 5000-series Support to 300-series Chipsets

    One of the most debated questions surrounding AMD's AM4 platform has been the lack of support for AMD's Ryzen 5000-series CPUs on the company's 300-series chipsets. Now, in an interview with Tom's Hardware, AMD's Corporate VP and GM of the Client Channel business, David McAfee, has thrown some cautious words into the hellish debate on platform fragmentation (some even say artificial segmentation). "It's definitely something we're working through," David said. "And it's not lost on us at all that this would be a good thing to do for the community, and we're trying to figure out how to make it happen." It's not a promise, but it seems that AMD is indeed contemplating solutions that would enable first-generation AM4 chipsets to support AMD's latest Ryzen 5000 series CPUs.



    The problem has mostly to do with storage space: there are only so much available bits to be used in AM4 motherboards' 16 MB SPI ROM, the read-only memory bank that stores BIOS configurations and the necessary instructions for processor support. As AM4 is one of the longest-lived consumer platforms ever, the number of CPUs has ballooned, which has led to difficult decisions as to which CPUs to support. However, some more creative board partners have resorted to interesting techniques that allowed them to free up space in the SPI ROM that could be used to add support for otherwise incompatible CPUs, such as simplifying the BIOS GUI and falling back on more traditional text-based UIs. That and other practices resulted in a number of vendors adding support for AMD's Ryzen 5000 chips on the most entry-level A320 motherboards, which left consumers that had opted for the more technically accomplished X370 motherboards high and dry - barring a few lucky, ASRock-toting exceptions.

    MSI Teases RadiX AXE6600 Router at CES
    Although not much is known about MSI's upcoming router, the company was teasing the RadiX AXE6600 during its virtual CES event. It's said to be a WiFi 6E router based on an unspecified 1.8 GHz Qualcomm SoC. The AXE6600 in the model name should break down to 600 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band, 1200 Mbps in the 5 GHz band and 4800 MHz in the 6 GHz band, if routers with the same speed rating are anything to go by. In fact, the specs seem to be similar to the Linksys Hydra Pro 6E, as it seems to be based on the same or at least a similar SoC from Qualcomm.



    The one thing that is obvious, especially from MSI's teaser on Twitter, is that the router will have plenty of RGB bling built into the antennas. The MSI dragon logo on the router, is a button according to Tom's hardware, that is said to cycle through various "AI" QoS presets. How useful or practical this will be in reality, is up for debate. The router is still a good few months out, with an expected launch sometime in the second half of this year. And if you're wondering, yes, MSI have made routers before, but it was quite some time ago and they weren't particularly popular.

    Interestingly, the ESA still hasn't confirmed the date in which this digital E3 is to take place - something the association always did at the close of each edition. Reports state that the decision to hold a digital-only event for 2022 might have been taken even before the current Omicron surge, and perhaps as early as last year. Should E3 2022 occur in an online format, this will be the second time this happens since the event's first edition back in 1995. In all these years, E3 has only ever been fully canceled in 2020, the year that COVID-19 was declared a pandemic.

    AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT Limited To PCIe 4.0 x4 Interface
    The recently announced AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT only features a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface according to specifications and images of the card published on the ASRock site. This is equivalent to a PCIe 3.0 x8 link or a PCIe 2.0 x16 connection and is a step down from the Radeon 6600 XT which features a PCIe 4.0 x8 interface and the Radeon 6700 XT with a PCIe 4.0 x16 interface. This fact is only specified by ASRock with AMD, Gigabyte, ASUS, and MSI not mentioning the PCIe interface on their respective pages. The RX 6500 XT also lacks some of the video processing capabilities of other RX 6000 series cards including the exclusion of H264/HEVC encoding and AV1 decoding.

    Curious-looking Core i5-12490F Surfaces in China with Additional L3 Cache
    Intel released the substantive portion of its 12th Generation Core, Pentium, and Celeron desktop processors to the retail market, based on the latest "Alder Lake" architecture. The part that's making the most waves is the Core i5-12400, a 6-core/12-thread part that only features "Golden Cove" P-cores (no E-cores or the software-optimization issues they bring). The i5-12400/F, i5-12500, and i5-12600, are based on the "H0" die of "Alder Lake-S," which physically only features six "Golden Cove" P-cores, no "Gracemont" E-core clusters, and only has 18 MB of L3 cache. The larger "C0" die is used across the i5-12600K, Core i7 and Core i9 chips, physically has 8 "Golden Cove" P-cores, 8 "Gracemont" E-cores across two E-core clusters, and 30 MB of L3 cache. It's important to lay out this piece of information to understand what Intel did with the new Core i5-12490F processor that's spotted in markets across Asia.



    Apparently Intel is sitting on a pile of "C0" dies, and decided to create the i5-12490F. This chip has 6 "Golden Cove" P-cores, no E-cores, but 20 MB of L3 cache; and is based on a heavily cut-down "C0" silicon. As an "F" SKU, it also disables the iGPU on the silicon. The clocks set are 3.00 GHz nominal, and 4.60 GHz boost, compared to 2.50 GHz nominal, and 4.40 GHz boost of the i5-12400/F, and identical clock speeds to the i5-12500. It's quite puzzling how the "H0" based i5-12500 is differentiated from this chip, given its lower 18 MB L3 cache amount. The base power value is set at 65 W, with maximum turbo power at 117 W. The i5-12490F can hence be simulated using an i5-12600K.

    AMD Socket AM5 a "Long-lived Platform": CEO
    AMD is designing its upcoming Socket AM5 platform to be a "long-lived platform," not unlike AM4. CEO Dr Lisa Su, responding to a question on the longevity of AM5, by Paul Alcorn from Tom's Hardware, said that she's very happy with AM4 being the company's long-lived desktop socket; and while she doesn't have an exact number of years to share, one could expect AM5 to be a "long-lived platform" of a similar kind.



    AMD Socket AM4 was debuted alongside the company's very first Ryzen processors, in March 2017. It has remained AMD's mainstream desktop socket for close to five years; and AMD continues to launch new products for the socket. Even in 2022, the company is expected to give the socket its swansong, with the Ryzen 5000X3D processors. AM4 was designed keeping in mind dual-channel DDR4 and up to 28 lanes of PCIe Gen 3 (later Gen 4) in mind. The change to Socket AM5 is driven by next-generation I/O, namely DDR5 memory (four 40-bit channels), and PCIe Gen 5.

    Corsair Readies AMD "Rembrandt" Ryzen 6000H-powered Xenomorph Gaming Device
    Corsair is readying a gaming device it calls "Xenomorph." At this point we don't know its exact form-factor, but given its display resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, and the fact that desktop monitors with it are hard to come by; this is very likely a 16-inch gaming notebook with a 16:10 display with that resolution. A UserBenchmark submission sheds light on the hardware specs of the device, which includes an AMD Ryzen 6000 series "Rembrandt" mobile processor. Built on the 6 nm node, "Rembrandt" combines an 8-core/16-thread "Zen 3+" CPU with an iGPU based on the latest RDNA2 graphics architecture. The iGPU features 768 stream processors, full DirectX 12 Ultimate support, including ray tracing; and the ability to share rendering workloads with an RDNA2-based discrete GPU, such as the Radeon RX 6800M.



    The name "Xenomorph" sparks a lot of speculation, mainly around the form-factor. Could this be a gaming notebook with a killer hardware feature such as an integrated touchscreen? Something with a foldable screen? A convertible that turns into a tablet? Another possibility is a device that looks otherworldly enough to be a tribute to HR Giger, the artist who created the Xenomorph alien. We don't know if Xenomorph is an internal codename, or an actual product name, as that might require some legal understanding with 20th Century Fox.

    Default ASRock Announces Two Z690 Aqua Motherboards, One with Extra OC Creds

    At the launch of the Z690 chipset, ASRock didn't reveal its flagship Aqua model, but now the company has finally announced not just one, but two Z690 Aqua models, one "regular" SKU and one OC SKU. The main difference between the two is that the OC SKU only has two DIMM slots, since as we know, DDR5 is extra finicky when it comes to running at high clock speeds and two DIMM boards allow for higher DRAM clock speeds, This also means that all the major board makers have now launched a two DIMM product geared towards overclockers.



    The two boards are mostly identical in terms of features otherwise, but there are some minor differences that we'll point out later. As expected, both boards feature a large, nicely integrated liquid cooling plate for the CPU and the 20 phase 105 A SPS VRM setup. ASRock has gone for a 12 layer PCB, not something you see in a lot of consumer motherboards and it's unclear if it'll bring any real benefits, but as this is a premium motherboard, it's a nice touch. The heatsink of the top-most M.2 drive is home to a small OLED display, but ASRock hasn't listed the size on its website.

    Alder Lake-N Makes an Appearance, Features Only Gracemont Cores
    Intel's Alder Lake family is apparently still growing and the latest leaks suggest that a new addition is on its way in the shape of the Alder Lake-N. This should be the most basic SKU of Alder Lake CPUs, as it'll only have "small" Gracemont cores and no Golden Cove cores at all, unlike all of its other siblings. The oddities don't stop here though, as these new CPUs won't even have any PCIe lanes from the CPU itself, beyond the chipset interconnect.



    It's possible that these will be some kind of embedded parts, as Alder Lake-N is said to come with up to eight cores. The limitation of PCIe lines, of which apparently only a total of nine will be offered, is something that might make it less appealing for embedded systems, especially if it requires a separate chipset. It's possible that Intel has designed these new SKUs for Chromebooks or other budget notebooks, but they'd have to be priced extremely affordably to be appealing, considering how cheap Chromebooks already are. The chips are also said to feature a full GT1 Gen 12.2 GPU with up to 32 EUs, so graphics performance should at least be comparable to Alder Lake-S desktop parts. We'd hazard a guess that the GPU clocks will be a lot lower though.

    Alienware's 34-inch QD-OLED Monitor Gets a Price
    Remember that 34-inch QD-OLED monitor that Alienware announced at CES earlier this year? The company has finally worked out how much it's going to charge for it, although there is still no fixed availability date. At US$1,299 the AW3423DW is going to be a $100 pricier than the AW3821DW, which sports a 38-inch Nano IPS panel with a resolution of 3840x1600, rather than the 34-inch QD-OLED panel with a resolution of 3440x1440 of the AW3423DW.



    Obviously the two display technologies aren't comparable, but it's at least an indication of how pricy QD-OLED will be initially, compared to more traditional display technologies. Both displays feature G-Sync Ultimate, so it's not as if Dell has tried to cut any corners here. The AW3423DW does offer a higher refresh rate of 175 Hz vs 144 Hz for the AW3821DW, which may be an advantage to some, but the official HDR certification is oddly enough only HDR 400 vs HDR 600, despite the fact that Dell claims it can deliver up to 1000 cd/m². That said, the black levels of the AW3423DW should be vastly superior, as should the colour gamut. The display is said to be available sometime early this spring, presumably in the US market first.

    Intel Sapphire Rapids Xeon with DDR5 Memory Spotted in AIDA64 and Cinebench R15
    Intel's next-generation Xeon processors code-named Sapphire Rapids are on track to hit the market this year. These new processors are supposed to bring a wide array of new and improved features and a chance for Intel to show off its 10 nm SuperFin manufacturing process in the server market. Thanks to the Twitter user YuuKi_AnS, we have some of the first tests run in AIDA64 and Cinebench R15 benchmark suites. Yuuki managed to get ahold of DDR5-enabled Sapphire Rapids Xeon with 48 cores and 96 threads, equipped with a base frequency of 2.3 GHz and boost speeds of 3.3 GHz. The processor tested was an engineering sample with a Q-SPEC designation of "QYFQ" and made for Intel Socket E (LGA-4677). This CPU sample was locked at 270 Watt TDP.



    Below, you can see the performance results of this processor, tested in the AIDA64 cache and memory benchmark and Cinebench R15 bench test. There is a comparison between AMD's Milan-X and Xeon Platinum 8380, so the numbers are more in check of what you can expect from the final product.

    NVIDIA GA107-based GeForce RTX 3050 is Real, Comes with 11% Lower TDP, Same Specs
    When NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 3050 "Ampere" based on the "GA106" silicon with specifications that could be fulfilled with the smaller "GA107," we knew that the company could eventually start making RTX 3050 boards with the smaller chip, and they did. Igor's Lab reports that RTX 3050 cards based on GA107 come with a typical board power of 115 W, which is about 11 percent lower than that of the GA106-based cards (130 W).



    There's no difference in specifications between the two cards. Both feature 2,560 CUDA cores across 20 streaming multiprocessors, 80 Tensor cores, 20 RT cores, and a 128-bit wide GDDR6 memory interface, holding 8 GB of memory that ticks at 14 Gbps data-rate (224 GB/s bandwidth). The GA106 and GA107 ASICs share a common fiberglass substrate, and hence are pin-compatible for the convenience of board partners, with the latter having a smaller die, so any cooling solution designed for the launch-day RTX 3050 should work perfectly fine with those based on GA107.

    Akasa, a leading provider of cooling and thermal solutions for the global electronics industry, has released new variants of their classic CPU coolers, updated for the Alder Lake processors (LGA 1700 mounting system). The three coolers are designed for unlocked desktop CPUs (AK-CC6606BP01), F-Series desktop CPUs (AK-CC6603EP01), and T-Series desktop CPUs (AK-CC6601EP01). These coolers will work at the TDP set by Intel, and will follow the official thermal and mechanical design guide, improving heat dissipation from the Alder Lake processors.



    The 12th generation of Intel Core processors will be using the LGA1700 mounting system, launching with a host of technological advances. Intel's new hybrid core design allows for efficient data processing, with the introduction of Performance and Efficiency cores (P-cores and E-cores respectively). P-cores are dedicated to the faster processing tasks, whilst E-cores have been built to work through background processes, therefore increasing the multitasking capabilities of the CPU. Due to the new sizes of these cores, the shape of the CPU's integrated heatspreader (IHS) has changed to accommodate this, with its rectangular dimensions of 37.5 mm x 45 mm.

    Based on TSMC's official January 2022 revenue report, it looks like the company is set for another great year. Month-on-month revenues are up by 10.8 percent compared to December of last year and year-on-year revenues are up a whopping 35.8 percent. In actual money, that corresponds to a revenue of NT$172.18 billion, or roughly US$6.18 billion, so we're not talking about small potatoes here.



    TSMC is forecasting a growth in sales of between 25 to 29 percent this year, assuming they can continue to deliver as expected to their customers. The first quarter sales are expected to land between US$16.6 and 17.2 billion, or around a 7.4 percent increase compared to last quarter. Its closest competitor in Taiwan also announced record profits, although at a mere NT$20.47 billion or about US$735 million. This is a month-to-month increase of a mere 0.95 percent, but an annual increase of a healthy 31.83 percent. UMC is expecting to be operating at full capacity for the remainder of this year, although no additional production capacity is expected.     (PR) NAND Flash Pricing Set to Spike 5-10% in Q2 Due to Material Contamination at WDC and Kioxia, Says TrendForce
    WDC recently stated that certain materials were contaminated in late January at NAND Flash production lines in Yokkaichi and Kitakami, Japan which are joint ventures with Kioxia, according to TrendForce's investigations. Before this incident, TrendForce had forecast that the NAND Flash market will see a slight oversupply the entire year and average price from Q1 to Q2 will face downward pressure. However, the impact of WDC's material contamination issue is significant and Samsung's experience during the previous lockdown of Xi'an due to the pandemic has also retarded the magnitude of the NAND Flash price slump. Therefore, the Q1 price drop will diminish to 5~10%. In addition, according to TrendForce, the combined WDC/Kioxia NAND Flash market share in the 3Q21 was as high as 32.5%. The consequences of this latest incident may push the price of NAND Flash in Q2 to spike 5~10%.



    The contaminated products in this incident are concentrated in 3D NAND (BICS) with an initial estimate of 6.5exabytes (approximately 6,500M GB) affected. According to TrendForce, damaged bits account for 13% of the group's output in 1Q22 and approximately 3% of the total output for the year. The normal production schedule for the entire line has yet to be confirmed. It is worth noting that the damages announced by WDC likely do not account for total losses stemming for this event and the number of damaged Kioxia parts has not been aggregated, so the total number of affected bits may increase further.
