Default GeForce RTX 3070 Uses 14Gbps GDDR6 Memory: ZOTAC and ASUS

NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 3070 performance segment graphics card uses 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory speed, according to the product page of the ZOTAC RTX 3070 Twin Edge (model: ZT-A30700E-10P), and the RTX 3070 DUAL by ASUS. This settles speculation around NVIDIA using the fastest available 16 Gbps GDDR6 memory for the RTX 3070. The company is using the even faster 19.5 Gbps and 19 Gbps GDDR6X memory for the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080, which it co-developed with Micron Technology. The use of 14 Gbps GDDR6 across a 256-bit wide memory bus gives the RTX 3070 the same 448 GB/s memory bandwidth as the RTX 2070. NVIDIA plans to launch the GeForce RTX 3070 some time in October, with prices starting at USD $499.

Facebook Technologies Stops Sales of Oculus VR Headset in Germany
Facebook Technologies, a subsidiary of Facebook Inc. and owner of Oculus, has today "temporarily" suspended sales of Oculus VR headsets in Germany. The news is coming today after Oculus announced that all of the new Oculus accounts have to move to the Facebook login system before January 1, 2023, when all of the current Oculus accounts will be suspended. The German data protection law is extremely suspicious of Facebook's behavior and how they handle user data in general, so Oculus has potentially decided to stop the sales to avoid any possible antitrust regulations from the German government. The exact reason is unknown, and it is yet to be revealed, however, the suspicions laid out here may be part of the reason.

Default NVIDIA Reserves NVLink Support For The RTX 3090

NVIDIA has issued another major blow to multi-GPU gaming with their recent RTX 30 series announcement. The only card to support NVLink SLI in this latest generation will be the RTX 3090 and will require a new NVLink bridge which costs 79 USD. NVIDIA reserved NVLink support for the RTX 2070 Super, RTX 2080 Super, RTX 2080, and RTX 2080 Ti in their Turing range of graphics cards. The AMD CrossFire multi-GPU solution has also become irrelevant after support for it was dropped with RDNA. Developer support for the feature has also declined due to the high cost of implementation, small user base, and often poor performance improvements. With the NVIDIA RTX 3090 set to retail for 1499 USD, the cost of a multi-GPU setup will exceed 3079 USD reserving the feature for only the wealthiest of gamers.

Default AMD 4th Gen Ryzen "Vermeer" Zen 3 Rumored to Include 10-core Parts

Yuri "1usmus" Bubliy, author of DRAM Calculator for Ryzen and the upcoming ClockTuner for Ryzen, revealed three pieces of juicy details on the upcoming 4th Gen AMD Ryzen "Vermeer" performance desktop processors. He predicts AMD turning up CPU core counts with this generation, including the introduction of new 10-core SKUs, possibly to one-up Intel in the multi-threaded performance front. Last we heard, AMD's upcoming "Zen 3" CCDs (chiplets) feature 8 CPU cores sharing a monolithic 32 MB slab of L3 cache. This should, in theory, allow AMD to create 10-core chips with two CCDs, each with 5 cores enabled.

Next up, are two features that should interest overclockers - which is Bubliy's main domain. The processors should support a feature called "Curve Optimizer," enabling finer-grained control over the boost algorithm, and on a per-core basis. As we understand, the "curve" in question could even be voltage/frequency. It remains to be seen of the feature is leveraged at a CBS level (UEFI setup program), or by Ryzen Master. Lastly, there's mention of new Infinity Fabric dividers that apparently helps you raise DCT (memory controller) frequencies "slightly higher" in mixed mode. AMD is expected to debut its 4th Gen Ryzen "Vermeer" desktop processors within 2020.

AMD to Enter Network Hardware Market, Develop WiFi Controller Products with MediaTek
Intel has a dominating position over the client-segment 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 NIC controller market. The company's wireless NICs have a near monopoly over WLAN cards inside notebooks, including those powered by AMD processors. Intel further leverages its own brand NICs under the vPro feature-set, providing an end-to-end management solution covering even the NIC. AMD needs to change this, especially if it wants its PRO feature-set to match up to vPro.

AMD is planing to enter the network hardware segment by developing WLAN controllers of its own, which will power future generations of Ryzen processor-powered notebooks, including Ryzen PRO ones; and possible become a staple for desktop PC motherboard vendors on the AMD platform. To cut through the toughest part about coming up with new NICs - the web of IP, AMD has decided to partner with MediaTek, which manufactures mobile SoCs, and cellular MODEM chips, and has the required IP to make standalone WLAN controllers. The first AMD WLAN controllers could build on existing MediaTek IP blocks.

Bitspower Intros Monoblock for GIGABYTE Z490 AORUS Master
Bitspower today introduced a CPU+VRM monoblock for the GIGABYTE Z490 AORUS Master motherboard (mode: BP-MBGAZ490AM). Tailored for GIGABYTE's second most endowed product series based on the Intel Z490 chipset, the monoblock uses nickel-plated copper as its primary material, with a clear acrylic top that's studded with addressable-RGB LEDs. The block cools the Socket LGA1200 processor through its main micro-fin lattice, while the coolant channel flows over even the VRM MOSFETs. Bitspower includes thermal pads for contact between the monoblock and the MOSFETs, however, it leaves the choice of TIM over the CPU to the end-users. The block comes with a mirror finish at the CPU base. Bitspower says that the monoblock is also compatible with the GIGABYTE Z490 AORUS Ultra, however you should be mindful with your VRM thermal pad placement. The monoblock takes in standard G 1/4" fittings (not included). Available now, the Bitspower CPU+VRM monoblock for GIGABYTE Z490 AORUS Master is priced at USD $200.

(PR) BenQ Announces ZOWIE XL-K Generation Monitors
The first XL monitor was launched in 2010. Back then, 3D technology was all the rage and almost every brand used 120Hz panels for 3D display applications. However, the very first XL monitor, the XL2410T, adopted the same panel for a totally different 2D application; esports. This was the result of a collaboration between BenQ's engineers and the original ZOWIE team, a group of veteran Counter-Strike players and enthusiasts. XL2410T was well accepted by the Counter-Strike community, not because of its cutting-edge technology, but because it was the first monitor able to support higher refresh rates at lower resolutions such as 4:3, 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 - the resolutions adopted by many CS players early on. It also had display modes and smart scaling to convince players that TFT LCD displays could compete with CRT monitors when it came to gameplay.

The development of the XL series has been steered by the focus of providing precise and customizable adjustment for players to perform to the best of their abilities in-game because in the world of eSports, players who take this sports seriously are the true stars. New technologies are not introduced unless it can enhance the in-game experience. Over time we have learned that each player has different visual and physical setup preferences. This is why every iteration of the XL series has been designed to help players see more clearly and play more smoothly and comfortably. During this process, BenQ acquired the ZOWIE brand along with the ZOWIE team in 2015. This was done with the objective of furthering the development of professional esports products.

Saber Interactive to Develop Witcher 3 Port for Next-Generation Consoles, Says CD Projekt RED
According to the latest information coming directly from CD Projekt RED, we are finding out that Witcher 3, one of the most popular releases from CDPR, is going to be ported to the next-generation console lineup by 3rd party studio. Here you can read the message CDPR passed in its H1 conference call:
    CD Projekt president Adam Kicinski
Regarding The Witcher 3 and its next-gen version: this project is developed outside, with our proven partner who had delivered the 4K version of The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 3 for Switch, so they already know our technology very well. We asked them to prepare the next-gen port, and as I said during my presentation, we expect a full next-gen experience, with great next-gen features, but it doesn't interfere with the next-gen development of CP, which is being done internally by the CP team, and we're confirming that CP will be released in the next-gen version. Well we have to differentiate two things: the current version, which will be released in November, will be playable from the beginning when next-gen consoles are released; you will be able to play the current-gen version on next-gen from day 1. And you can expect a bit higher quality than on the current-gen. However, the full-blown next-gen version is planned for next year and it will be developed internally.

The VirtualLink USB-C VR Headset Connection Standard is Dead
The VirtualLink Consortium which included the likes of NVIDIA, AMD, HTC Vive, Oculus VR, Valve, and Microsoft introduced the USB-C VirtualLink standard in 2018 and was debuted by NVIDIA on the RTX 20 series founders cards. The goal was to simplify VR headset connections by combining power, video, and data over a single USB-C cable. A few niche VR headsets such as the StarVR and XTAL integrated the VirtualLink connector but the standard struggled to receive major adoption.

Valve had planned to introduce a VirtualLink connector for the Valve Index but was canceled due to technical issues. The only major headset to utilize the port is the Oculus Quest however it only uses the USB-C connector and not the VirtualLink standard. NVIDIA excluded the port from their RTX 20 series Super cards and AMD never released a card with the connector. The official VirtualLink website currently redirects to the Wikipedia page for the standard and with NVIDIA excluding the standard from all of their RTX 30 series cards it's safe to say the standard is officially dead.

Facebook Technologies Stops Sales of Oculus VR Headset in Germany

The news is coming today after Oculus announced that all of the new Oculus accounts have to move to the Facebook login system before January 1, 2023, when all of the current Oculus accounts will be suspended. The German data protection law is extremely suspicious of Facebook's behavior and how they handle user data in general, so Oculus has potentially decided to stop the sales to avoid any possible antitrust regulations from the German government. The exact reason is unknown, and it is yet to be revealed, however, the suspicions laid out here may be part of the reason.

Default RTX 3080 Crash to Desktop Problems Likely Connected to AIB-Designed Ca

Igor's Lab has posted an interesting investigative article where he advances a possible reason for the recent crash to desktop problems for RTX 3080 owners. For one, Igor mentions how the launch timings were much tighter than usual, with NVIDIA AIB partners having much less time than would be adequate to prepare and thoroughly test their designs. One of the reasons this apparently happened was that NVIDIA released the compatible driver stack much later than usual for AIB partners; this meant that their actual testing and QA for produced RTX 3080 graphics cards was mostly limited to power on and voltage stability testing, other than actual gaming/graphics workload testing, which might have allowed for some less-than-stellar chip samples to be employed on some of the companies' OC products (which, with higher operating frequencies and consequent broadband frequency mixtures, hit the apparent 2 GHz frequency wall that produces the crash to desktop).

Another reason for this, according to Igor, is the actual "reference board" PG132 design, which is used as a reference, "Base Design" for partners to architecture their custom cards around. The thing here is that apparently NVIDIA's BOM left open choices in terms of power cleanup and regulation in the mounted capacitors. The Base Design features six mandatory capacitors for filtering high frequencies on the voltage rails (NVVDD and MSVDD). There are a number of choices for capacitors to be installed here, with varying levels of capability. POSCAPs (Conductive Polymer Tantalum Solid Capacitors) are generally worse than SP-CAPs (Conductive Polymer-Aluminium-Electrolytic-Capacitors) which are superseded in quality by MLCCs (Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitor, which have to be deployed in groups). Below is the circuitry arrangement employed below the BGA array where NVIDIA's GA-102 chip is seated, which corresponds to the central area on the back of the PCB.

EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 KINGPIN Achieves 2.58 GHz Core Clock, Breaks World Record in 3D Mark Port Royal
It's only been moments after the RTX 3090's release, but professional overclockers are already unleashing the power available on NVIDIA's GA-102 chip by resorting to exotic cooling techniques. Renowned overclocker Vince "K|NGP|N" Lucido, who works in close proximity with NVIDIA AIB EVGA, tamed the RTX 3090's temperature by resorting to liquid nitrogen. This, alongside tweaks to vCore (1069 mV) allowed the card to reach a startling 2.58 GHz core clock (a staggering 52.2% increase over NVIDIA's base clock), and 10.750 MHz (21.5 Gbps) memory clocks on the GDDR6X subsystem, which in itself is a 10.3% increase over reference clocks.

The 16.673 3D Mark Port Royal score was achieved with a fully custom design made by EVGA with Vince Lucidos' input. This über 3090 ultimately delivered a performance increase of around 30% more than the stock RTX 3090 would be able to, which isn't a bad equilibrium between the core and memory clock increases. Some might say this is the performance delta one would expect between the 3090 and the 3080 (an overall 40% performance increase, considering the 3090 is already an average of 10% faster than the 3080 at stock clocks).

RTX 3080 Users Report Crashes to Desktop While Gaming
A number of RTX 3080 users have been reporting crashes to desktop while gaming on their newly-acquired Ampere graphics cards. The reports have surged in numerous hardware discussion venues (ComputerBase, LinusTechTips, NVIDIA, Tom's Hardware, Tweakers and Reddit), and appear to be unlinked to any particular RTX 3080 vendor (ZOTAC, MSI, EVGA, and NVIDIA Founders Edition graphics cards are all mentioned).

Apparently, this crash to desktop happens once the RTX 3080's Boost clock exceeds 2.0 GHz. A number of causes could be advanced for these issues: deficient power delivery, GPU temperature failsafes, or even a simple driver-level problem (though that one seems to be the least likely). Nor NVIDIA nor any of its AIB partners have spoken about this issue, and review outlets failed to mention this happening - likely because it never did, at least on samples sent to reviewers. For now, it seems that manually downclocking the graphics card by 50-100 MHz could be a temporary fix for the issue while it's being troubleshooted. An unlucky turn of events for users of NVIDIA's latest and greatest, but surely it's better to face a very slight performance decrease in exchange for system stability.

NVIDIA: RTX 3090 Performance 10-15% Higher Than RTX 3080 in 4K
NVIDIA themselves have shared performance slides for their imminent RTX 3090 graphics card, the new halo product that's been marketed as the new Titan. Previous-gen Titans have achieved extremely meager performance uplifts compared to NVIDIA's top-of-the-line cards (see RTX 2080 Ti vs RTX Titan, an average of 8% performance difference in favor of the Titan. According to the company, users should expect a slightly higher performance uplift this time around, though the 10-15% higher performance in 4K still seems meager - in pure price/performance terms - for the average consumer.

The average consumer who isn't the main focus for this graphics card and its gargantuan 24 GB of GDDR6X memory, anyway - this is more aimed at the semi-professional or professional crowds working with specialized software, whether it be in rendering or AI-based workloads. The RTX 3090 is thus not so much a product for the discerning computer enthusiast, but more of a halo product for gamers, and a crucial product for professionals and academics.

TSMC Begins Construction of 2 nm Manufacturing Facility
TSMC, the leading semiconductor foundry in the world, has reportedly begun construction of its 2 nm manufacturing facility. According to a DigiTimes report, translated by @chiakokhua on Twitter, besides the construction of 2 nm R&D center, TSMC has also started the construction of the manufacturing facility for that node, so it will be ready in time. Please do note that the node name doesn't represent the size of the transistor, so it will not actually be 2 nm wide. The new facilities will be located near TSMC's headquarters in Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan. The report also confirms the first details about the node, specifically that it will use Gate-All-Around (GAA) technology. And there is also another interesting piece of information regarding even smaller node, the planning for 1 nm node has begun according to the source.

Besides advanced nodes, TSMC also laid out clear plans to accelerate the push of advanced packaging technology. That includes SoIC, InFO, CoWoS, and WoW. All of these technologies are classified as "3D Fabric" by the company, even though some are 2.5D. These technologies will be mass-produced at "ZhuNan" and "NanKe" facilities starting in the second half of 2021, and are expected to significantly contribute to the company's profits. It is also reported that the competing foundry, Samsung, has a 3D packaging technology of its own called X-cube, however, it is attracting customers a lot slower than TSMC due to the high costs of the new technology.

Default China Focuses on 3rd Generation Semiconductors in Aim for Self-Suffici

The People Republic of China has always released 5-year plans that have a goal of achieving something. And in the latest, 14th 5-year plan China has an eye on the semiconductor industry. Specifically, China wants to develop independence and self-sufficiency when it comes to semiconductors. With tensions between the US and China raising, it is a smart move to have domestic technology to rely on. The new plan starts next year, 2021, and ends in the year 2025. In that period, China will devote financial resources and human workforce that will hopefully enable its goal. The primary aim for this 14th plan seems to be 3rd generation semiconductor technology. What is meant by that is a technology like gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC). These technologies would be a nice addition to China's portfolio of semiconductors, so we should wait and see what comes out of it.

AMD "Lucienne" Silicon to Power Certain Ryzen 5000 Series APUs
There's been much chatter in the social media about a new piece of AMD APU silicon, codenamed "Lucienne." It's being rumored that "Lucienne" is a refresh of the current-generation "Renoir" silicon, and is an APU with eight "Zen 2" CPU cores and eight "Vega" NGCUs. One of the first SKUs based on the die is the Ryzen 7 5700U, which surfaced on the AoTS benchmark database.

The 5700U is possibly a 15 W ultra-portable processor, and according to the AoTS benchmark screenshot, it comes with an 8-core/16-thread CPU (the 4700U is 8-core/8-thread). The addition of SMT helps the 5700U shore up much of its performance lead over the 4700U. It also turns out that the Ryzen 5000 will see two APU dies driving AMD's product-stack, with "Lucienne" powering the Ryzen 5 5500U and Ryzen 7 5700U; while the newer "Cezanne" die, which introduces "Zen 3" CPU cores, powers the Ryzen 5 5600U and the Ryzen 7 5800U.

GALAX Confirms GeForce RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Matches RTX 2080
An alleged event by GALAX targeted at distributors in China revealed up to three upcoming SKUs in NVIDIA's RTX 30-series. This comes as yet another confirmation from a major NVIDIA AIC partner about the 20 GB variant of the GeForce RTX 3080. The RTX 3080 originally launched with 10 GB memory earlier this month, and it is widely expected that NVIDIA fills the price-performance gap between this $700 SKU and its $1,500 sibling. The RTX 3080 uses twenty 8 Gbit GDDR6X memory chips (two chips per 32-bit data-path), much like how the RTX 3090 achieves its 24 GB memory amount.

Elsewhere we see GALAX mention the RTX 3060, a performance-segment SKU positioned under the RTX 3070. You'll notice that the product-stack graph by GALAX suggests performance comparisons to previous-generation SKUs. The RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 are faster than everything from the previous generation, while the RTX 3070, which is coming next month, is shown trading blows with both the RTX 2080 Ti and the RTX 2080 Super. In this same graph, the RTX 3060 is shown matching up to the RTX 2080 (non-Super), a card NVIDIA originally launched at $700.

EVGA Introduces Queue-based Order System for NVIDIA RTX 30-Series Graphics Cards
EVGA has announced that they are changing up the usual process for NVIDIA RTX 30-series graphics cards in wake of unprecedented demand and supply constraints. The company has now implemented a queue-based system, where email notifications are being used as a sort of pre-register for the acquisition of NVIDIA's new, hot-selling cards, right in wake of comments from NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang that supply for this particular series of graphics cards should not meet demand until early 2021.

Users who use the "notify me" button on the EVGA website are essentially sitting in line for the moment where EVGA adds new cards to its stock (all RTX 3080 cards are out of stock at time of writing). Users who are being matched with inventory availability will be sent a secure email to the account they registered their notification with (provided the email is also registered with EVGA itself) which will then allow the user to order his select EVGA RTX 30-series card. Users who have previously asked for a notification have already been added to the queue, and the email with the order link is only active for 5 hours after it's been sent to your account - after this period of time, your chance in the queue will be passed on to the next in line, and you'll have to reenter it again. This could bring some semblance of normalcy to the system, and reduce the number of F5-mashing users that have to spend their precious time waiting for an opportunity to snag one of NVIDIA's latest. It could also bring some measure of protection against scalpers and bot purchase applications. Check after the break for the full explanation on how this system works, which was given by EVGA's own Jacob Freeman. The system is first being rolled-out for the US, with other regions following suit according to its success.

Crysis 3 Installed On and Run Directly from RTX 3090 24 GB GDDR6X VRAM
Let's skip ahead of any "Can it run Crysis" introductions for this news piece, and instead state it as it is: Crysis 3 can absolutely run when installed directly on a graphics card's memory subsystem. In this case, an RTX 3090 and its gargantuan 24 GB of GDDR6X memory where the playground for such an experiment. Using the "VRAM Drive" application, distributed in an open-source manner via the GitHub platform, one can allocate part of their GPU's VRAM and use it as if it was just another system drive. After doing so, user Strife212 (as per her Twitter handle) then went on to install Crysis 3 on 15 GB of the allocated VRAM. The rest of the card's 9 GB were then available to actually load in graphical assets for the game, and VRAM consumption (of both the installed game and its running assets) barely crossed the 20 GB total VRAM utilization.

As you might expect, graphics memory is one of the fastest memory subsystems on your PC, being even faster (in pure performance terms) than system RAM. Loading up of game levels and asset streaming from VRAM "disk-sequestered" pools to free VRAM pools was obviously much faster than usual, even more than the speeds achieved by today's NVMe drives. Crysis 3 in this configuration was shown to run by as many as 75 FPS in 4K resolution, with the High preset settings. A proof of concept more than anything - but users with a relatively powerful (or memory-capable) graphics card can perhaps look at this exotic solution as a compromise of sorts, should they not have any fast storage options, and provided the game install size is relatively small.

AMD Big Navi GPU Features Infinity Cache?
As we are nearing the launch of AMD's highly hyped, next-generation RDNA 2 GPU codenamed "Big Navi", we are seeing more details emerge and crawl their way to us. We already got some rumors suggesting that this card is supposedly going to be called AMD Radeon RX 6900 and it is going to be AMD's top offering. Using a 256-bit bus with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, the GPU will not use any type of HBM memory, which has historically been rather pricey. Instead, it looks like AMD will compensate for a smaller bus with a new technology it has developed. Thanks to the new findings on Justia Trademarks website by @momomo_us, we have information about the alleged "infinity cache" technology the new GPU uses.

It is reported by VideoCardz that the internal name for this technology is not Infinity Cache, however, it seems that AMD could have changed it recently. What does exactly you might wonder? Well, it is a bit of a mystery for now. What it could be, is a new cache technology which would allow for L1 GPU cache sharing across the cores, or some connection between the caches found across the whole GPU unit. This information should be taken with a grain of salt, as we are yet to see what this technology does and how it works, when AMD announces their new GPU on October 28th.

Intel 10 nm Ice Lake-SP Server Processors Reportedly Delayed
Intel 10 nm products have seen massive delays over the years, and Intel has built many IPs on the new node, however, not many of them have seen the light of the day due to problems the company has experienced with the manufacturing of the new node. That has caused delays in product shipments in the past, meaning that the time for 10 nm is just ahead. According to the latest DigiTimes Taiwan report, we have information that Intel is going to delay its Ice Lake-SP server processors manufactured on a 10 nm node. And it is going to be a whole quarter late according to the report. Instead of launching in Q4 this year, we can expect to see new processors in Q1 of 2021. It is yet unknown whatever the launch will happen at the beginning of Q1 or its end, however, we will report on it as we hear more information.

Update: DigiTimes has also released another report regarding server shipments. It is reported that server vendors are decelerating the shipments as they are making fewer orders in Q4 to wait for the new Intel CPUs. Judging by this move, the demand for these new processors is going to be rather high and the supply chain is preparing slowly for it.

Default Intel Alder Lake-S Processor with 16c/32t (Hybrid) Spotted on SANDRA D

Intel's upcoming Core "Alder Lake-S" desktop processor, which is shaping up to be the first Hybrid desktop processor, surfaced on the SiSoft SANDRA benchmark database, as dug up by TUM_APISAK. The chip is reported by SANDRA to be 16-core/32-thread, although this is expected to be a combination of eight "big" high-performance cores, and eight "small" high-efficiency cores, in a multi-core topology similar to Arm big.LITTLE. Other specs read by SANDRA include clock speeds around "1.40 GHz," ten 1.25 MB L2 caches (possibly 8x 1.25 MB for the big "Golden Cove" cores, 2x 1.25 MB for the two groups of small "Gracemont" cores), and 30 MB of L3 cache. The Hybrid processor architecture is expected to introduce several platform-level innovations to the modern desktop, taking advantage of the extremely low power draw of the "Gracemont" cores when the machine isn't grinding serious workloads.

NVIDIA CEO Comments on RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 Supply Shortages
Shortages in supply of GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 graphics cards could persist until 2021, according to NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, responding to a question in a Q&A session of the GTC 2020 (Fall) conference. "The 3080 and 3090 have a demand issue, not a supply issue," said Huang. "The demand issue is that it is much much greater than we expected—and we expected really a lot," he added.

Jen-Hsun predicts that the Holiday 2020 shopping season will only compound availability woes. "I believe that demand will outstrip all of our supply through the year. Remember, we're also going into the double-whammy. The double-whammy is the holiday season. Even before the holiday season, we were doing incredibly well, and then you add on top of it the "Ampere factor," and then you add on top of that the "Ampere holiday factor," and we're going to have a really really big Q4 season." He likened the demand of the RTX 3080 to that of the Intel Pentium in the mid-1990s. "Retailers will tell you they haven't seen a phenomenon like this in over a decade of computing. It hearkens back to the old days of Windows 95 and Pentium when people were just out of their minds to buy this stuff. So this is a phenomenon like we've not seen in a long time, and we just weren't prepared for it."

(PR) Western Digital Announces DC ZN540 NVMe SSD, 2TB Variant of WD Blue SN550
Building on a unique and diverse product portfolio across HDD and flash, Western Digital today announced a suite of new NVMe SSDs for enabling next-generation, data-centric architectures for data centers, industrial IoT, automotive and client applications. The new family includes the Ultrastar DC ZN540 ZNS NVMe SSD for designing a more efficient data center storage tier with competitive TCO; the Western Digital IX SN530 Industrial SSD for the extreme environments of industrial and automotive applications; and the 2 TB WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD for speeding up PC performance. Leveraging Western Digital's unique vertical integration capabilities - from designing and manufacturing its NAND flash to developing its own in-house SSD controllers and firmware - the new products underscore the company's continued strength and commitment in driving storage innovation for new system architectures, applications and use cases for global customers across cloud, OEM, enterprise, channel and retail end-user markets.

The amount of data created over the next three years will be more than the data created over the past 30 years, according to IDC. Billions of connected systems will generate a myriad of contextualized data sets from smart video to consumer and sensor data, which must be captured, transformed and analyzed to bring value to industries, businesses and people. Legacy architectures cannot keep up with today's data-intensive environments. The challenge is how to efficiently and cost-effectively build the data infrastructure that will keep up with data demands of the zettabyte-scale era. Storage is critical and fundamental to creating these new architectures and extracting value from data.

Sapphire Radeon RX 6800 XT NITRO+ Pictured, Too
Hot on the heels of the Radeon RX 6800 XT Pulse picture leak, VideoCardz brings us pics of its pricier sibling, the RX 6800 XT NITRO+. This will be the most premium air-cooled custom-design RX 6800 XT graphics card by Sapphire. Much like the Pulse, the NITRO+ features a meaty triple-slot cooling solution ventilated by three fans. The heatsink of the NITRO+ is larger than that of the Pulse, and looks taller. The PCB is shorter than the card itself, so the extra length go toward air flow-through. There appears to be a design focus on making the cooler shroud airy, with large cutouts wherever possible. At the same time, as its premium offering, Sapphire gave the NITRO+ plenty of RGB LED bling. The card also appears to feature a header so you can sync your lighting to the card. The card draws power from a pair of 8-pin PCIe power inputs, outputs include two DisplayPorts, an HDMI port, and a USB-C port with DisplayPort passthrough.

Sapphire Radeon RX 6800 XT Pulse Pictured
Here are some of the first pictures of the Sapphire Radeon RX 6800 XT Pulse graphics card. The company teased these cards late last week, and VideoCardz has its press pics. The RX 6800 XT Pulse (and Pulse OC) will be the more cost-effective custom-design RX 6800 XT option from Sapphire, while the NITRO+ would represent its premium custom-design lineup. The RX 6800 XT Pulse features a large triple-slot cooling solution with a trio of fans. The PCB is 80% the overall length of the card, which means half the airflow from the third fan goes through the back. The card appears to be drawing power from two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. We'll know more about these cards when Sapphire launches them.

Dynalink TV Box Supercharges Your Living Room with Android TV and the Simplicity of Voice Control
Dynalink TV Box (model: DL-ATV36) is everything Google's Chromecast and Android's Fire Stick should have been, and then some. If you're like me, you've probably had a decent quality TV since before they started integrating Smart TV functionality, specifically that based on Android TV. You worked your way around using Google's nimble and inexpensive Chromecast, or the Amazon Fire Stick (since a petty spat between the two tech giants doesn't allow Prime Video to be cast on Chromecast). Dynalink TV Box is groundbreaking as it gives any TV with an HDMI input the full power of Android TV, complete with a very capable voice-remote control.

The Dynalink TV Box comes in a compact package that includes a foot-long HDMI cable, a power adapter, and the highly functional voice remote control. The puck-sized unit can be hidden away behind your TV. The voice remote control leverages Bluetooth 4.2, and hence needs no line-of-sight with the TV Box. The 1 A power adapter is optional if your TV has a USB port capable of delivering around 800 mA of power. Setting up the TV Box is accomplished in 5 minutes, flat. Simply plug it in, pair it with the included voice remote control, point it to your home's Wi-Fi, sign-in to Google, and you're good to go. Out of the box, the TV Box comes with Netflix and YouTube pre-installed, although you can install any of the hundreds of streaming video apps from the Google Play Store.

The teased picture shows a bit more of the card as well, where we can see the printed Red Devil logo. This custom design is expected to be a triple-slot and triple-fan design. Fire Breaks Out in MSI's Bao'an Shenzhen Factory
A major fire accident occurred on the afternoon of November 5, 2020, at an MSI factory located in the Bao'an district of Shenzhen, China, which is about a 30-minute drive from the HKSAR border. MSI reports that nobody was injured in the accident, and that the production line was "not affected," although a video emerged on Reddit showing a large plume of smoke emerging from the factory. The company initiated industry-standard fire emergency response, and called in the Fire Department. The company reports that production has resumed in the factory. It's unknown what MSI manufactures in Bao'an, but given that notebooks and pre-built desktops are assembled in the Kunshan district of Shanghai, it's likely that the Bao'an factory assembles graphics cards and motherboards.

AMD Ryzen 5000 Processors Allegedly Work With 300 Series Motherboards
When AMD initially announced that their next-generation Ryzen processors would only support 500 series motherboards they faced significant backlash and were forced to include 400 series motherboard support. The reason AMD cited at the time was the limitations in some flash chips not containing enough space to store the information for all processors, several motherboard manufacturers encountered this issue with Ryzen 3000 bios updates where they needed to reduce graphical elements in their BIOS.

An overclock.net forum user by the name Brko has recently claimed that Zen 3 processors can run on a GIGABYTE X370 motherboard with a beta BIOS and AGESA update. This claim has been partially validated by chm128256m who got a Ryzen 9 5900X to run on his modded ASRock A320M motherboard. AMD is extremely unlikely to officially support this backwards compatibility with 300 series motherboards given their previous statements. It will be interesting to see if any OEMs provide backward compatibility updates and any issues that may arise.

Scalping Locust Swarm Takes Out Ryzen 5000 Inventory, Same Fate Awaits Radeon RX 6000
Scalping bots and overpriced re-sales are the new reality of PC hardware launches. The same swarm that wiped out launch inventories of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards, now hit AMD Ryzen 5000 series "Zen 3" processor inventories across the US, reports HotHardware. Bots scalped out Ryzen 5000 series inventories using sophisticated scalping services such as Bounce Alerts, and scalpers quickly put their freshly acquired inventory to re-sale on eBay at exorbitant prices, with the likes of an $800 Ryzen 9 5950X being re-sold at over 50% premiums.

ASUS has warned that a similar fate awaits the first inventories of the Radeon RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 graphics cards, given that AMD has marketed these next-gen GPUs to offer performance rivaling those of the GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 2080 Ti (in effect RTX 3070), respectively. In the weeks leading up to the Ryzen 5000 market release, AMD issued anti-scalping guidelines to its retail partners, to ensure fair sales of hardware to genuine buyers, and to prevent scalping bots. We now know these guidelines were futile.

EA Confirms Battlefield VI, Holiday 2021 Release
EA late last week confirmed that the studio is working on the next chapter in the "Battlefield" franchise, unsurprisingly titled "Battlefield VI." What remains to be seen is the production design, whether EA DICE sticks to its formula of making the next Battlefield a AAA set-piece and technology demonstrator, much like how BFV was among the first games with real-time raytracing, although the mandate from EA CEO appears to favor a "truly next-gen" approach. Pressure from EA's bean-counters will also ride heavy on DICE to make at least one of the components of the game to be e-sports optimized, and feature a battle royale multiplayer mode. We predict the implementation could be similar to the current Call of Duty, which features a nested "Warzone" mode in addition to a AAA campaign experience. EA DICE is targeting a Holiday 2021 tentative release for "Battlefield VI."

Update 08:17 UTC: Apparently the image above is fan-art. EA did not reveal any details about the premise of the game.

(PR) EK Unveils Special Edition Vector Water Blocks for NVIDIA RTX 3080 FE Graphics Cards
EK, is proud to finally unveil its Special Edition high-performance GPU water blocks for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition graphics card. The EK-Quantum Vector FE RTX 3080 D-RGB comes in two versions - Silver and Black, both featuring stark contrasts between the aluminium outer shell and backplate, as well as the Plexi window and terminal illuminated with addressable D-RGB LEDs. Both water blocks come with two types of connection terminals, offering unrivaled versatility. The performance is one of the key elements of the design, which is why this block features a 30% larger fin area compared to other water blocks from the Vector family.

The EK-Quantum Vector FE RTX 3080 D-RGB water block enclosure is the most complex GPU cooling solution developed by EK to date. The small form factor and unique shape of the RTX 3080 Founders Edition PCB presented a rare engineering challenge. The water block is purpose-designed with an extremely thick copper base for high-performance, allowing it to clear all components of the densely-packed PCB and adding more heat removal capacity in the process. The cooling engine used in this water block is the largest EK has built to date, having roughly 30% more surface area than the rest of the existing Vector series water blocks.

Sapphire Also Teases Radeon RX 6800 XT Pulse

The teaser picture reveals a card that's more than 2 slots thick, and features three evenly sized fans. Sapphire already announced its AMD reference-design cards for the RX 6800 XT and RX 6800, which would mean their Pulse and Pulse OC SKUs are slotted a notch above, followed by the NITRO+ series.

Samsung 14 nm Chip Orders from China Surge
Chinese IC designers have been left without reliable silicon manufacturers for some time now, as the US administration has imposed a ban on all Chinese manufacturers. That resulted in them having to gain the approval of the US administration to use any US-made technology for the production of Chinese goods. In light of that situation, Chinese clients have begun searching for a new place to manufacture their silicon. According to the report from DigiTimes, their sources indicate that Chinese clients are supposedly having an increased interest in Samsung's silicon manufacturing. The company has seen a surge in chip orders for its 14 nm node, with a report saying that Chinese customers are looking at even larger nodes as well.

This is quite an interesting situation and we have to wait and see how much of Samsung's total silicon manufacturing revenue will the Chinese clients contribute. That specific information should come in any of the next earnings calls if the company chooses to disclose it.
