New DTH platform for Ukraine
SES Astra has signed an agreement with the Ukrainian financial and industrial corporation Ukraine Business Group (UBG) for capacity on its 5 degrees East orbital position. The move paves the way for the launch of what will be the country’s third DTH platform, operating in a market also served by Viasat Ukraine and Russia’s NTV-Plus, in the second half of this year. UBG is an industry conglomerate that operates in the finance, medicine, manufacturing, agriculture, IT and media sectors. In March, it bought 30% of the business channel UBC and (later this year) 100% of the music channel A-One.
It is also currently applying for licences for Dobro-TV, Ukrainian Fashion and Z-TV.
DTH arrived relatively late in Ukraine, with the first locally owned platforms making their debuts as recently as 2008.
However, two of these platforms – Poverkhnost Plus and MYtv – have since failed, arguably leaving room in the market for another local player to compete with MTG’s Viasat Ukraine.
Although the UBG platform’s line-up currently consists of five FTA channels, it is highly likely that more will be added ahead of its launch.
