China's President Believes Nation's Technological Development Unhinder
Earlier today, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte met with China's President Xi Jinping—[Only registered and activated users can see links. Holland's premier had to carefully navigate the conversation around recent global tensions, most notably the prevention of [Only registered and activated users can see links. CCTV (China's state broadcaster) selected a couple of choice quotes for inclusion in an online report—Xi remarked that: "the Chinese people also have the right to legitimate development, and no force can stop the pace of China's scientific and technological development and progress." Specific manufacturers and types of machinery were not mentioned during the meeting between state leaders, but media interpretations point to recent [Only registered and activated users can see links. ASML is keen to keep Chinese firms on its order books—according to AP News: "China became ASML's second-largest market, accounting for 29% of its revenue as firms bought up equipment before the licensing requirement took effect." Revised licensing agreements have stymied the supply of ASML most advanced chipmaking tools—[Only registered and activated users can see links. (PR) Introspect Technology Ships World's First GDDR7 Memory Test Syste
Introspect Technology, a JEDEC member and a leading manufacturer of test and measurement instruments, announced today that it has shipped the M5512 GDDR7 Memory Test System, the world's first commercial solution for testing JEDEC's newly minted JESD239 Graphics Double Data Rate (GDDR7) SGRAM specification. This category-creating solution enables graphics memory engineers, GPU design engineers, product engineers in both memory and GPU spaces, and system integrators to rapidly bring up new GDDR7 memory devices, debug protocol errors, characterize signal integrity, and perform detailed memory read/write functional stress testing without requiring any other tool.
The GDDR7 specification is the latest industry standard that is aimed at the creation of high-bandwidth and high-capacity memory implementations for graphics processing, artificial intelligence (AI), and AI-intensive networking. Featuring pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) and an improved signal to noise ratio compared to other PAM4 standards used in networking, the GDDR7 PAM3 modulation technology achieves greater power-efficiency while significantly increasing data transmission bandwidth over constrained electrical channels.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Industry insiders reckon that Samsung's first-gen AI accelerator is much cheaper when compared to NVIDIA H100 GPU price points—a per-unit figure of $3756 is mentioned in the KED Global article. MSI Claw Core Ultra 5 135H Competes Closely Against Core 7 155H Siblin
MSI's new handheld gaming PC—Claw—has (so far) experienced a scattershot [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] program. Initial impressions from embargo-busting Chinese evaluators indicated that the Intel Core Ultra "Meteor Lake" APU-based devices struggled to keep up with 2023's lineup of AMD-powered handhelds—namely the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. YouTube tech channel, Retro Tech Dad, has acquired two MSI Claw SKUs for testing purposes—the more expensive model sports an Intel [Only registered and activated users can see links. The plucky new-ish competitors—updated with freshly-released drivers—were pitched against both ASUS ROG Ally variants (Ryzen [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] and [Only registered and activated users can see links. Once again, we see these Intel "Meteor Lake" mobile chips falling behind AMD's popular Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU—the standard Ryzen Z1 seems to be a closer rival. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] has analyzed Retro Tech Dad's initial findings—these figures: "suggests that the Core Ultra 5 135H performs better than the Core Ultra 7 155H in low-TDP settings. However, overall, both APUs provide nearly identical performance." It is worth watching Retro Tech Dad's full video coverage—he posits that Intel's silicon is capable of trading blows with equivalent AMD parts, but current drivers could be holding back this unrealized potential. The cheapest Claw SKU seems to be the de facto choice (for Team Blue enthusiasts), given its demonstrated ability to keep up with higher-priced options within MSI's handheld family.[Only registered and activated users can see links. The memory-enhanced H200 GPUs, in their MLPerf debut, used TensorRT-LLM to produce up to 31,000 tokens/second, a record on MLPerf's Llama 2 benchmark. The H200 GPU results include up to 14% gains from a custom thermal solution. Arm China Develops NPU Accelerator for AI, Targeting Domestic CPUs
Arm China is making strides in the AI accelerator market with its new neural processing unit (NPU) called Zhouyi. The company aims to integrate the NPU into low-cost domestic CPUs, potentially giving it an edge over competitors like AMD and Intel. Initially a part of Arm Holdings, which licensed IP in China, Arm China took on a new strategy of developing its own IP specifically for Chinese customers a few years ago. While the company does not develop high-performance general-purpose cores, its Zhouyi NPU could become a fundamental building block for affordable processors. A significant step forward is the upcoming addition of an open-source driver for Zhouyi to the Linux kernel. This will make the IP easy to program for software developers, increasing its appeal to chip designers.
Being an open-source driver, the integration in the Linux kernel brings assurance to developers that Zhouyi NPU could be the first in many generations from Arm China. While Zhouyi may not directly compete with offerings from AMD or Intel, its potential for widespread adoption in millions of devices could help Arm China acquire local customers with their IP. The project, which began three years ago with a kernel-only driver, has since evolved into a full driver stack. There is even a development kit board called EAIDK310, powered by Rockwell SoC and Zhouyi NPU, which is available on Aliexpress and Amazon. The integration of AI accelerator technology into the Linux ecosystem is a significant development, though there is still work to be done. Nonetheless, Arm China's Zhouyi NPU and open-source driver are essential to making AI capabilities more accessible and widely available in the domestic Chinese market.[Only registered and activated users can see links. (PR) Samsung Semiconductor Discusses "Water Stress" & Impact of Produc
"The Earth is Blue," said Yuri Gagarin, the first human to journey into space. With two-thirds of its surface covered in water, Earth is a planet that exuberates its blue radiance in the dark space. However, today, the scarcity of water is a challenge that planet Earth is confronted with. For some, this may be hard to understand. What happened to our blue planet Earth? To put in numbers, more than 97% of the water on Earth consists of seawater, with another 2% locked in ice caps. That only leaves a mere 1% of water available for our daily use. The problem lies in the fact that this 1% of water is gradually becoming scarcer due to reasons such as climate change, environmental pollution, and population growth, leading to increased water stress. 'Water stress' is quantified by the proportion of water demand to the available water resources on an annual basis, indicating the severity of water scarcity as the stress index rises. Higher stress indexes signify experiencing severe water scarcity.
The semiconductor ecosystem, unsustainable without water
Because water stress issues transcend national boundaries, various stakeholders including international organizations and governments work to negotiate water resource management strategies and promote collaboration. UN designates March 22nd as an annual "World Water Day" to raise awareness about the severity of water scarcity running various campaigns. Now, it's imperative for companies to also take responsibility for the water resources given and pursue sustainable management.[Only registered and activated users can see links.
