ExtraSS Framework Paper Details Intel's Take on Frame Generation
With both NVIDIA and AMD having the ability to nearly double frame-rates in games using frame generation technologies such as DLSS 3 and FSR 3, Intel Graphics couldn't be too far behind. The company is taking a significantly different approach than the other two GPU makers. In a research paper titled "ExtraSS Framework Details Intel's Take on Frame Generation," Intel provides an overview of how ExtraSS works, and its obvious advantage over DLSS 3 and FSR 3—latency.
ExtraSS is a technology that relies on frame extrapolation, instead of interpolation on FSR 3 and DLSS 3. In interpolation, the software uses past- and future frames to guess an in-between frame, using motion vectors and temporal data. This adds latency, which is why NVIDIA and AMD rely on technologies such as Reflex and Anti-Lag+ to mitigate it. There's no such technological problem to solve with ExtraSS. On the other hand, generating frames entirely using past frames (i.e. extrapolation in the literal sense of the word), can result in artifacts and ghosting. Intel intends to solve this using a new warping method, and AI. ExtraSS should come in particularly handy as Intel is betting big on giving its processors powerful iGPUs, such as the Xe-LPG powering the Core Ultra "Meteor Lake," while its Arc "Alchemist" GPUs remain a generation older than what NVIDIA and AMD have in the dGPU market. AMD 5th Gen EPYC "Turin" Pictured: Who Needs Accelerators When You Have 192 Cores?
AMD's upcoming server processor, the 5th Gen EPYC "Turin," has been pictured as an engineering sample is probably being evaluated by the company's data-center or cloud customers. The processor has a mammoth core-count of 192-core/384-thread in its high-density cloud-focused variant that uses "Zen 5c" CPU cores. Its regular version that uses larger "Zen 5" cores that can sustain higher clock speeds, also comes with a fairly high core-count of 128-core/256-thread, up from the 96-core/192-thread of the "Zen 4" based EPYC "Genoa."
The EPYC "Turin" server processor based on "Zen 5" comes with an updated sIOD (server I/O die), surrounded by as many as 16 CCDs (CPU complex dies). AMD is expected to build these CCDs on the TSMC N4P foundry node, which is a more advanced version of the TSMC N4 node the company currently uses for its "Phoenix" client processors, and the TSMC N5 node it uses for its "Zen 4" CCD. TSMC claims that the N4P node offers an up to 22% improvement in power efficiency over N5, as well as a 6% increase in transistor density. Each of the "Zen 5" CCDs is confirmed to have 8 CPU cores sharing 32 MB L3 cache memory. A total of 16 such CCDs add up to the processor's 128-core/256-thread number. AMD Ryzen 8000G Socket AM5 Desktop APU Lineup Detailed
Here is our first look at the higher end of AMD's Ryzen 8000G series Socket AM5 desktop APU lineup. The company is planning to bring its 4 nm "Phoenix" and "Phoenix 2" monolithic silicon to the socketed desktop platform, to cover two distinct markets. Models based on the larger "Phoenix" silicon cater to the market that wants a sufficiently powerful CPU, but with a powerful iGPU that's fit for entry-level gaming, or graphics-intensive productivity tasks; whereas the smaller "Phoenix 2" silicon ties up the lower end of AMD's AM5 desktop processor stack, as it probably has a lower bill of materials than a "Raphael" multi-chip module.
The lineup is led by the Ryzen 7 8700G, a direct successor to the Ryzen 7 5700G "Cezanne." This chip gets the full 8-core/16-thread "Zen 4" CPU, along with its 16 MB shared L3 cache; and the full featured Radeon 780M iGPU with its 12 compute units worth 768 stream processors. The CPU features a maximum boost frequency of 4.20 GHz. This is followed by the Ryzen 5 8600G, which is based on the same "Phoenix" silicon as the 8700G, but with 6 out of 8 "Zen 4" cores enabled, and a maximum CPU boost frequency of 4.35 GHz, and the 16 MB L3 cache left untouched. Intel "Emerald Rapids" Xeon Platinum 8592+ Tested, Shows 20%+ Improvement over Sapphire Rapids

Click Here To Register...], codenamed Emerald Rapids, delivering the new Xeon Platinum 8592+ flagship SKU with 64 cores and 128 threads. Packed into its fresh silicon, Intel promises boosted performance and reduced power hunger. The comprehensive tech benchmarking website [Only registered and activated users can see links. Testing production servers running the new 8592+ showed solid gains over prior Intel models, let alone older generations still commonplace in data centers. On average, upgrading to the 8592+ increased single-socket server performance by around 23.5% compared to the previous generation configs of Sapphire Rapid, Xeon Platinum 8490H. The dual-socket configuration records a 17% boost in performance.
However, Intel is not in the data center market by itself. AMD's 64-core offering that Xeon Platinum 8592+ is competing with is AMD EPYC 9554. The Emerald Rapids chip is faster by about 2.3%. However, AMD's lineup doesn't stop at only 64 cores. AMD's Genoa and Genoa-X with 3D V-cache top out at 96 cores, while Bergamo goes up to 128 cores. On the power consumption front, the Xeon Platinum 8592+ was pulling about 289 Watts compared to the Xeon Platinum 8490H average of 306 Watts. At peak, the Xeon Platinum 8592+ CPU managed to hit 434 Watts compared to the Xeon Platinum 8490H peak of 469 Watts. This aligns with Intel's claims of enhanced efficiency. Chinese company Sipeed has introduced the Lichee Pocket 4A, one of the first handheld gaming devices based on the RISC-V open-source instruction set architecture (ISA). Sipeed positions the device as a retro gaming platform capable of running simple titles via software rendering or GPU acceleration. At its core is Alibaba's T-Head TH1520 processor featuring four 2.50 GHz Xuantie C910 RISC-V general-purpose CPU cores and an unnamed Imagination GPU. The chip was originally aimed at laptop designs. Memory options include 8 GB or 16 GB LPDDR4X RAM and 32 GB or 128 GB of storage. The Lichee Pocket 4A has a 7-inch 1280x800 LCD touchscreen, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity, and an array of wired ports like USB and Ethernet. It weighs under 500 grams. KIOXIA today released the maximum possible storage capacity for the microSDXC standard of 2 TB, with the release of the Exceria Plus G2 microSDXC 2 TB model. Chinese chipmaker Moore Threads has launched its first domestically-produced 1000-card AI training cluster, dubbed the KUAE Intelligent Computing Center. A central part of the KUAE cluster is Moore Threads new MTT S4000 accelerator card with 48 GB VRAM utilizing the company's third-generation MUSA GPU architecture and 768 GB/s memory bandwidth. In FP32, the card can output 25 TeraFLOPS; in TF32, it can achieve 50 TeraFLOPS; and in FP16/BF16, up to 200 TeraFLOPS. Also supported is INT8 at 200 TOPS. The MTT S4000 focuses on both training and inference, leveraging Moore Thread's high-speed MTLink 1.0 intra-system interconnect to scale cards for distributed model parallel training of datasets with hundreds of billions of parameters. The card also provides graphics, video encoding/decoding, and 8K display capabilities for graphics workloads. Starfield Played By 13 Million Players and Bethesda Promises Updates Every Six Weeks Next Year
Bethesda has released its "end of the year update" for Starfield, as well as shared some statistics from the game, including the fact that it has been played by 13 million players. In addition, Bethesda has also promised updates every six weeks, starting in February next year.
While the published statistics do not give a lot of details and those 13 million players do not translate to actual sold games, mostly due to the Xbox Game Pass, it does have some fun facts, including that the game has over 22 million days played, with 40 hours as an average playtime per player, and that players have visited nearly 2 billion planets. As of February next year, Bethesda's new updates for Starfield will include everything from quality-of-life improvements to content and feature updates. New Chinese Online Gaming Regulations Send Tencent, NetEase, and Other Gaming Stocks Crashing
China, earlier today, brought into effect new online gaming and gambling regulations, which aim to curb down the time spent by gamers online, and remove all incentives to play daily, by regulating the way games reward gamers to play daily or often, causing them to spend more time and money online. The announcement sent shockwaves through the financial markets, causing investors to drain about $80 billion in value from two the leading online gaming stocks, Tencent and NetEase. The regulations essentially set spending limits for online games, by spelling out the exact ways in which game studios can monetize their online experiences and play reward systems. Tencent lost about 16% in share price, while that of NetEase crashed by 25%. Prosus, which owns a 26% stake in Tencent, slid by 14.2% in the markets. Microsoft Pulls the Plug on Windows Mixed Reality, Reportedly Downsizing VR Division
Microsoft is discontinuing Windows Mixed Reality. This was discovered when the company added it to a list of deprecated Windows features. The Windows Mixed Reality platform, along with its accompanying Mixed Reality Portal app, and Mixed Reality for Steam VR, are on the list. For now it is deprecated, and Microsoft says that it will be removed in a future release of Windows. Mixed Reality was released in 2017, during the thick of the VR craze in the tech industry, a time when Facebook, having acquired Oculus, and betting big on the Metaverse, an endeavor that cost the company over $20 billion since. Mixed Reality served as a gateway to games and apps in the VR space. ASUS BIOS Update Improves Intel Core Ultra 155H "Meteor Lake" Performance/Watt
UltrabookReview, which recently took the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED UX3405 for a spin, noticed something interesting with the Intel Core Ultra 155H "Meteor Lake" processor powering it—apparently Intel is still working with its device partners to improve performance and efficiency, and a UEFI firmware update (BIOS update) from ASUS improves the processor's performance/Watt. The reviewer compares the notebook with its original BIOS version 201, to the updated version 203, and notices improvements in performance/Watt at 28 W. The firmware apparently updates the notebook's power management. The improvements are most apparent with Cinebench R23, where the best-run score with the original 201 firmware was 12357 points, and the updated 203 firmware was 13873 points (a 12.25% improvement). Samsung and Naver Developing an AI Chip Claiming to be 8x More Power Efficient than NVIDIA H100
Naver, the firm behind the HyperCLOVA X large language model (LLM), has been working with Samsung Electronics toward the development of power-efficient AI accelerators. The collaboration brings Naver's expertise with Samsung's vast systems IP over silicon design, the ability to build complex SoCs, semiconductor fabrication, and its plethora of DRAM technologies. The two recently designed a proof of concept for an upcoming AI chip, which they iterated on an FPGA. Naver claims the AI chip it is co-developing with Samsung will be 8 times more energy efficient than an NVIDIA H100 AI accelerator, but did not elaborate on its actual throughput. Its solution, among other things, leverages energy-efficient LPDDR memory from Samsung. Austistic Lapsus$ Hacker Who Leaked GTA 6 Clips Sentenced to Life in a Hospital
18-year old Arion Kurtaj from Oxford, UK, was a key member of the international hacking gang Lapsus$, which, among several cases of cyber crime against tech giants, has been behind the recent leak of the Grand Theft Auto VI video clips, ahead of the official trailer by Rockstar Games. Over the years, Lapsus$ hit big tech companies, including Rockstar Games, NVIDIA, and Uber, with their exploits assessed to have caused these companies about $10 million in losses. In an interesting twist to the case, the Kurtaj was deemed by doctors unfit to stand trial as he is severely autistic, and so the jury in the case was asked to determine only whether or not he committed the acts of cyber crime, and not if he did so with criminal intent.
The judge hearing the case said Kurtaj's skills and desire to commit cyber crime meant he remained a high risk to the public. While on bail from his previous arrest for hacking NVIDIA and UK telecommunication giants EE and BT, and in police protection in a hotel, Kurtaj pulled off his most daring hack of breaching Rockstar Games, using only an Amazon Firestick, his hotel's TV, and a mobile phone. He stole 90 clips of unreleased footage from gameplay of Grand Theft Auto VI. He also broke into Rockstar's internal Slack channel, threatening to leak the game's source code if the studio didn't contact him within 24 hours. He was immediately re-arrested and in lock-up until his trial. CableMod Recalls 12VHPWR v1.0 and v1.1 Angled Adapters
CableMod issued a safety recall of its 16-pin 12VHPWR angled adapters, versions 1.0 and 1.1. The company cites safety issues behind the recall. This includes both the company's 90° angled, and 180° hard connectors. The company observed that the contact points in the male connector is improper, causing it to overheat and melt into the GPU. The safety issue only affects CableMod's hard adapters, and not its angled cables. AMD Ryzen 7 5700 Socket AM4 Processor Sneaks Out
AMD is preparing to update its desktop processor lineup not just with new Ryzen 8000G series APUs for the Socket AM5 platform, but also a handful new SKUs for AM4. Among the chips listed is a mysterious new Ryzen 7 5700 Socket AM4 processor. Although we don't have its pricing, AMD sneakily put up its product information on its website. On the product page, the company says that the product came out in April 2022, but it never did, at least not in the retail channel.
The Ryzen 7 5700 is an 8-core/16-thread processor that lacks integrated graphics, and yet is based on the 7 nm "Cezanne" monolithic silicon, with similar clock speeds to the Ryzen 7 5700G APU. Think of this as the 5700G with its iGPU disabled. The chip comes with a CPU base frequency of 3.70 GHz compared to the 3.80 GHz of the 5700G, although the two have an identical maximum boost frequency of 4.60 GHz. Each of the eight "Zen 3" CPU cores has 512 KB of dedicated L2 cache, and share a 16 MB L3 cache. The processor's TDP is set to 65 W, and the retail package includes a Wraith Stealth cooling solution. One pitfall of choosing the 5700 over something like the 5700X would be its lack of a PCIe Gen 4 interface (it's limited to the older Gen 3), which would mean a slower NVMe storage sub-system.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Alleged Ryzen 8000G AM5 APU Pricing Makes an Early Appearance
Courtesy of serial leaker @momomo_us we now have an indication on potential pricing for AMD's upcoming [Only registered and activated users can see links. The Ryzen 8000G-series APUs are expected to use the same CPU cores as AMD's Zen 4 based Ryzen 7000-series CPUs, but paired with a new I/O design in a monolithic die. The leaker has provided pricing from what is said to be three different shops and for three different SKUs, with the Ryzen 5 7600 as the reference point in all three cases. All three shops list the Ryzen 5 7600 at a higher price than Amazon, so it's unlikely that we're looking at MSRP pricing here.
The Ryzen 5 8500G has a price range of US$190-240, followed by the Ryzen 5 8600G which comes in at US$240-310 and finally the Ryzen 7 8700G which is listed at US$340-440. The price span is rather large, which makes it impossible to draw any conclusions of what the MSRP will be. Tom's hardware managed to dig up a pair of retailers, including what appears to be the one with the lowest pricing in the leak, which is DirectDial. The other retailer that Tom's Hardware located was Zones, but that pricing doesn't match any of the initial leaks, but are somewhat towards the higher numbers. Intel Should be Leading the AI Hardware Market: Pat Gelsinger on NVIDIA Getting "Extraordinarily Lucky"
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger considers NVIDIA "extraordinarily lucky" to be leading the AI hardware industry. In a recent public discussion with the students of MIT's engineering school to discuss the state of the semiconductor industry, Gelsinger said that Intel should be the one to be leading AI, but instead NVIDIA got lucky. We respectfully disagree. What Gelsinger glosses over with this train of thought is how NVIDIA got here. What NVIDIA has in 2023 is the distinction of being one of the hottest tech stocks behind Apple, the highest market share in a crucial hardware resource driving the AI revolution, and of course the little things, like market leadership over the gaming GPU market. What it doesn't have, is access to the x86 processor IP.
NVIDIA has, for long, aspired to be a CPU company, right from its rumored attempt to merge with AMD in the early/mid 2000s, to its stint with smartphone application processors with Tegra, an assortment of Arm-based products along the way, and most recently, its spectacularly unsuccessful attempt to acquire Arm from Softbank. Despite limited luck with the CPU industry, to level up to Intel, AMD, or even Qualcomm and MediaTek; NVIDIA never lost sight of its goal to be a compute hardware superpower, which is why, in our opinion, it owns the AI hardware market. ASUS Teases 4K 240 Hz ROG Gaming Monitor with 1080p 480 Hz Mode
Just like LG and HP, ASUS is gearing up to launch a dual mode 4K 240 Hz / 1080p 480 Hz OLED monitor and the company has released a little teaser ahead of the official CES 2024 reveal of the monitor. IBM Demonstrates a Nanosheet Transistor that Loves 77 Kelvin—Boiling Point of Nitrogen
IBM, at the 2023 IEEE International Electron Device Meeting (IEDM), demonstrated a concept nanosheet transistor that posts a near 100% performance improvement at the boiling point of nitrogen, of 77 Kelvin (-196 °C). Given how relatively industrialized and scaled out the manufacture, safe transport, storage, and use of liquid nitrogen is, this development potentially unlocks a new class of chips that attain top performance under liquid nitrogen cooling. Think a new generation of AI HPC accelerators that can instantly double their performance under LN2, provided a new kind of cooling solution is developed for data-centers.
Nanosheet transistors are the evolutionary next step to FinFETs, which have been driving semiconductor foundries since 16 nm, which could see their technical limits met at 3 nm. Nanosheets are expected to make their debut with 2 nm-class nodes such as the TSMC N2 and Intel 20A. At an operating temperature of 77 K, IBM's nanosheet device is claimed to offer a near doubling in performance, due to less charge carrier scattering, which results in lower power. Reducing scattering reduces resistance in the wires, letting electrons move through the device more quickly. Combined with lower power, devices can drive a higher current at a given voltage. Cooling also results in greater sensitivity between the device's on and off positions, so it takes lesser power to switch between the two states, resulting in lower power. This lower power means that transistor widths can be lowered, resulting in higher transistor densities, or smaller chips. New Chinese Online Gaming Regulations Send Tencent, NetEase, and Other
China, earlier today, brought into effect new online gaming and gambling regulations, which aim to curb down the time spent by gamers online, and remove all incentives to play daily, by regulating the way games reward gamers to play daily or often, causing them to spend more time and money online. The announcement sent shockwaves through the financial markets, causing investors to drain about $80 billion in value from two the leading online gaming stocks, Tencent and NetEase. Microsoft Pulls the Plug on Windows Mixed Reality, Reportedly Downsizing VR Division

UltrabookReview, which recently took the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED UX3405 for a spin, noticed something interesting with the Intel Core Ultra 155H "Meteor Lake" processor powering it—apparently Intel is still working with its device partners to improve performance and efficiency, and a UEFI firmware update (BIOS update) from ASUS improves the processor's performance/Watt. The reviewer compares the notebook with its original BIOS version 201, to the updated version 203, and notices improvements in performance/Watt at 28 W. Samsung and Naver Developing an AI Chip Claiming to be 8x More Power Efficient than NVIDIA H100
Naver, the firm behind the HyperCLOVA X large language model (LLM), has been working with Samsung Electronics toward the development of power-efficient AI accelerators. The collaboration brings Naver's expertise with Samsung's vast systems IP over silicon design, the ability to build complex SoCs, semiconductor fabrication, and its plethora of DRAM technologies. The two recently designed a proof of concept for an upcoming AI chip, which they iterated on an FPGA. Naver claims the AI chip it is co-developing with Samsung will be 8 times more energy efficient than an NVIDIA H100 AI accelerator, but did not elaborate on its actual throughput. Autistic Lapsus$ Hacker Who Leaked GTA 6 Clips Sentenced to Life in a Hospital
18-year old Arion Kurtaj from Oxford, UK, was a key member of the international hacking gang Lapsus$, which, among several cases of cyber crime against tech giants, has been behind the recent leak of the Grand Theft Auto VI video clips, ahead of the official trailer by Rockstar Games. Over the years, Lapsus$ hit big tech companies, including Rockstar Games, NVIDIA, and Uber, with their exploits assessed to have caused these companies about $10 million in losses. In an interesting twist to the case, the Kurtaj was deemed by doctors unfit to stand trial as he is severely autistic, and so the jury in the case was asked to determine only whether or not he committed the acts of cyber crime, and not if he did so with criminal intent.
The judge hearing the case said Kurtaj's skills and desire to commit cyber crime meant he remained a high risk to the public. While on bail from his previous arrest for hacking NVIDIA and UK telecommunication giants EE and BT, and in police protection in a hotel, Kurtaj pulled off his most daring hack of breaching Rockstar Games, using only an Amazon Firestick, his hotel's TV, and a mobile phone. He stole 90 clips of unreleased footage from gameplay of Grand Theft Auto VI. He also broke into Rockstar's internal Slack channel, threatening to leak the game's source code if the studio didn't contact him within 24 hours. He was immediately re-arrested and in lock-up until his trial. CableMod issued a safety recall of its 16-pin 12VHPWR angled adapters, versions 1.0 and 1.1. The company cites safety issues behind the recall. This includes both the company's 90° angled, and 180° hard connectors. The company observed that the contact points in the male connector is improper, causing it to overheat and melt into the GPU. The safety issue only affects CableMod's hard adapters, and not its angled cables. An unknown group leaked the source code of Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) to the web. The group posted the source code up for downloads through media such as bit torrent. MSI Readies ATX12VO-ready AMD Socket AM5 Motherboard, and its First ATX12VO PSU
MSI is planning to expand its small lineup of motherboards with ATX12VO power connectivity—the new desktop motherboard power standard that does away with the 5 V and 3.3 V power domains, and relies entirely on 12 V, with the aim of simplifying PSU designs and desktop PC power cabling. ATX12VO is still an emerging standard that hasn't gained traction in the DIY channel, but PC OEMs and systems integrators are beginning to catch on, for the cost savings to be had. MSI has been targeting this class of customers—OEMs and small SI, with motherboards under its mainstream PRO series. ASUS updated its AMD Radeon graphics card lineup with the introduction of the Radeon RX 7800 XT Dual OC and RX 7700 XT Dual OC. This is an interesting development, given that the company only had TUF Gaming series custom-designs of the two GPUs at their early September 2023 launch. The company continues to lack any ROG Strix series products based on the RX 7800 XT, RX 7700 XT, and the RX 7900 series. The two new Dual OC series cards are positioned below the TUF Gaming products, and predictably, share a common board design for the RX 7800 XT Dual OC and the RX 7700 XT Dual OC.
The new Dual OC common board for the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT is just about 2 slots thick (or 2.2 slots to be specific). It is 27.9 cm long, and 13.39 cm tall, or about an inch taller than what constitutes "full height." Its cooler features an aluminium fin-stack heatsink that's ventilated by two 100 mm Axial Tech fans backed by dual ball bearings, webbed impellers, and idle fan-stop. The card draws power from two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. With its OC Mode enabled (via software), the RX 7800 XT Dual OC offers a Game clock of 2254 MHz and 2565 MHz Boost clock (vs. 2124/2430 MHz reference). Chinese Government Approves 105 Games to Appease Investors After Last Week's Curbs Send Gaming Stocks Crashing

With shipments totaling 68.5 million units in the third quarter of 2023, the global PC market managed to outperform expectations. Given current conditions and a tenuous macroeconomic environment, IDC has lowered its forecast for the worldwide PC market. 2023 shipment volume is now expected to decline 13.8% compared to 2022, which itself declined 16.6% over the previous year. IBM Demonstrates a Nanosheet Transistor that Loves 77 Kelvin—Boiling Point of Nitrogen
IBM, at the 2023 IEEE International Electron Device Meeting (IEDM), demonstrated a concept nanosheet transistor that posts a near 100% performance improvement at the boiling point of nitrogen, of 77 Kelvin (-196 °C). Given how relatively industrialized and scaled out the manufacture, safe transport, storage, and use of liquid nitrogen is, this development potentially unlocks a new class of chips that attain top performance under liquid nitrogen cooling. Think a new generation of AI HPC accelerators that can instantly double their performance under LN2, provided a new kind of cooling solution is developed for data-centers.
Nanosheet transistors are the evolutionary next step to FinFETs, which have been driving semiconductor foundries since 16 nm, which could see their technical limits met at 3 nm. Nanosheets are expected to make their debut with 2 nm-class nodes such as the TSMC N2 and Intel 20A. At an operating temperature of 77 K, IBM's nanosheet device is claimed to offer a near doubling in performance, due to less charge carrier scattering, which results in lower power. Reducing scattering reduces resistance in the wires, letting electrons move through the device more quickly. Combined with lower power, devices can drive a higher current at a given voltage. Cooling also results in greater sensitivity between the device's on and off positions, so it takes lesser power to switch between the two states, resulting in lower power. This lower power means that transistor widths can be lowered, resulting in higher transistor densities, or smaller chips. NVIDIA RTX 4080 SUPER Sticks with AD103 Silicon, 16GB of 256-bit Memory

Click Here To Register...] of unreleased MSI RTX 40-series SUPER graphics cards seem to confirm that the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is getting 16 GB of memory, likely across a 256-bit memory interface, as NVIDIA is tapping into the larger "AD103" silicon to create it. The company had maxed out the "AD104" silicon with the current RTX 4070 Ti. What's also interesting is that they point to the RTX 4080 SUPER having the same 16 GB of 256-bit memory as the RTX 4080. NVIDIA carved the current RTX 4080 out of the "AD103" by enabling 76 out of 80 SM (38 out of 40 TPCs). So it will be interesting to see if NVIDIA manages to achieve the performance goals of the RTX 4080 SUPER by simply giving it 512 more CUDA cores (from 9,728 to 10,240). The three other levers NVIDIA has at its disposal are GPU clocks, power limits, and memory speeds. The RTX 4080 uses 22.4 Gbps memory speed, which it can increase to 23 Gbps.
The current RTX 4080 has a TGP of 320 W, compared to the 450 W of the AD102-based RTX 4090, and RTX 4080 cards tend to include an NVIDIA-designed adapter that converts three 8-pin PCIe connectors to a 12VHPWR with signal pins denoting 450 W continuous power capability. In comparison, RTX 4090 cards include a 600 W capable adapter with four 8-pin inputs. These are placeholder listings, meaning that they're just there to feed the spiders and get customers to check back for pre-orders. A Swiss retailer has the MSI GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER listed at prices ranging between 1,230 CHF ($1,465) for the cheapest Ventus 3X model, and 1,355 CHF ($1,613) for the most premium SUPRIM X model. These prices are inclusive of 18% taxes, which points to the likelihood that the RTX 4080 SUPER has an NVIDIA MSRP of approximately $1,200, displacing the current RTX 4080 from its launch MSRP. The RTX 4080 can be occasionally seen listed for as low as $1,180.
Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is seeing its prices range from 992 CHF ($1,180, including taxes) for the cheapest model to 1,063 CHF ($1,265), pointing to the possibility of a $950 MSRP. This SKU might not displace the current RTX 4070 Ti from its $800 MSRP, with street prices starting at $790. TSMC Plans to Put a Trillion Transistors on a Single Package by 2030
During the recent IEDM conference, TSMC previewed its process roadmap for delivering next-generation chip packages packing over one trillion transistors by 2030. This aligns with similar long-term visions from Intel. Such enormous transistor counts will come through advanced 3D packaging of multiple chipsets. But TSMC also aims to push monolithic chip complexity higher, ultimately enabling 200 billion transistor designs on a single die. This requires steady enhancement of TSMC's planned N2, N2P, N1.4, and N1 nodes, which are slated to arrive between now and the end of the decade. While multi-chipset architectures are currently gaining favor, TSMC asserts both packaging density and raw transistor density must scale up in tandem. Some perspective on the magnitude of TSMC's goals include NVIDIA's 80 billion transistor GH100 GPU—among today's largest chips, excluding wafer-scale designs from Cerebras.
Yet TSMC's roadmap calls for more than doubling that, first with over 100 billion transistor monolithic designs, then eventually 200 billion. Of course, yields become more challenging as die sizes grow, which is where advanced packaging of smaller chiplets becomes crucial. Multi-chip module offerings like AMD's MI300X and Intel's Ponte Vecchio already integrate dozens of tiles, with PVC having 47 tiles. TSMC envisions this expansion to chip packages housing more than a trillion transistors via its CoWoS, InFO, 3D stacking, and many other technologies. While the scaling cadence has recently slowed, TSMC remains confident in achieving both packaging and process breakthroughs to meet future density demands. Not Just TSMC, Even Samsung Running Behind Schedule with its U.S. Fab

BusinessKorea reports that Samsung Electronics has pushed the timeline for mass-production in its upcoming Austin Texas-based fab to 2025. Its construction was originally slated to be complete by now, with risk production and testing through early 2024, and mass production later in the year, which has all been pushed to 2025. The company now hopes to push its first wafer toward the end of 2024, with mass production expected some time in 2025.
Samsung reportedly blames issues with U.S. Government subsidies and regulatory problems behind the delays. A key aspect of getting cutting edge Asian foundries such as TSMC and Samsung to invest in the U.S. had to do with government subsidies to help these fabs overcome the uphill task of doing so Stateside and making the venture profitable. The U.S. had a sense of urgency in bringing these companies over, as it saw a potential conflict across the Taiwan straits, which threatened to disrupt practically the entire global digital economy. The company's first production line in this foundry was expected to be 4 nm EUV FinFET. AMD Readies Radeon RX 7600 XT, RX 7700, and RX 7800
Even as NVIDIA inches close to the launch of its RTX 40-series SUPER graphics cards in January, AMD could be preparing a product stack update of its own. While NVIDIA's refresh focuses on the higher end of its lineup, AMD looks to spread out more into the mainstream-performance segments. A regulatory filing with the Eurasian Economic Commission mentions the terms "RX 7600 XT," "RX 7700," and "RX 7800," which fill gaps between the RX 7600, RX 7700 XT, and RX 7800 XT.
There exists a rather big gap between the $230 Radeon RX 7600 and the $450 RX 7700 XT, which AMD is looking to fill with the RX 7600 XT and RX 7700 (non-XT). How AMD goes about carving out these two will be interesting to see. The RX 7600 already maxes out the 6 nm "Navi 33" silicon that it's based on, which means to create the RX 7600 XT, AMD might have to tap into the larger (and much more expensive) "Navi 32" MCM. There is a vast gap between the 32 CU (compute units) available to the RX 7600, and the 54 CU that the RX 7700 XT has (while the silicon itself has 60). Besides CU count, AMD has other levers, such as the MCD (memory cache die) count, which could be down to just 2 for the RX 7600 XT, or 3 for the RX 7700. The Radeon RX 7800 is a different beast. AMD faced quite some flack for positioning the RX 7700 XT within $50 of the RX 7800 XT, and now the former can be had for a street price of roughly $430. Intel felt the need to introduce the new cable standard as part of the new ATX 3.1 specification as the 12VHPWR is flimsy, and poses a burn-out hazard in case of an improper contact. For modular PSU manufacturers, implementing the new connector is as easy as selling or giving away a modular cable that plugs into the 12VHPWR connector on the PSU's backplane, and puts out a 12V-2x6 connector on the other end, and so as a leading power supply OEM, Seasonic is handing out such cables for free, but there's a catch.
Seasonic is giving away a modular PSU cable that plugs into a 12VHPWR on the PSU's backplate on one end, and puts out a new ATX 3.1 standards compliant 12V-2x6 connector on the other end, which promises greater mechanical stability over the 12VHPWR. Intel's Largest Ever Chip Fab Investment will be a $25 Billion Facility in Israel
Intel has secured a $3.2 billion grant from the Israeli government for constructing a new $25 billion chip fabrication facility in southern Israel. For the Socket LGA1700, the company has the PRO H610M 12VO, and now the company has its first ATX12VO motherboard for AMD Socket AM5—the PRO B650M 12VO/WiFi.
The company hasn't finalized the board design, but we know from its silhouette to be a Micro-ATX (240 mm x 240 mm) board, with the Socket AM5 wired to two DDR5 DIMM slots, a PCI-Express 4.0 x16, a handful M.2 NVMe Gen 4 slots, and some basic connectivity, including onboard Wi-Fi. As with all ATX12VO motherboards we've seen to date, onboard VRM is used to switch 12 V to lower voltage domains, including 5 V and 3.3 V needed for SATA drives, and the likes. MSI also revealed that it is working on a branded ATX12VO power supply series, so both the retail and OEM/SI channel customers can buy the motherboard+PSU as combos from a single source. Intel's non-K 65W 14th Gen Core Processors Listed on European Retailer
Ahead of its rumored January 8 announcement, various unreleased 14th Gen Intel Core desktop processors got listed on European e-tailer CoolMod. These are non-K (65 W) processor models. The lineup begins with the Core i3-14100F, a 4P+0E processor without integrated graphics, priced at €124.94. If you need the iGPU, it will cost you at least €25 more, for the i3-14100 at €149.96. The most hotly anticipated chip among the lineup, the Core i5-14400F is priced at €219.95. A notch up is the i5-14500, going for a steep €249.95. Interestingly, the store has the i5-14400 (witth the iGPU) listed at the same exact price. There is no i5-14600 listed.
The Core i7-14700F is priced at €384.95. This chip has an 8P+12E configuration, which is the same as the i7-14700K, but with lower base frequency, and tighter power limits. It lacks an iGPU, and if you need one, then the i7-14700 is listed at €409.95. Chinese x86 CPU Maker Zhaoxin Adds Support for "Preferred Cores" to Modernize its Processor Ecosystem
Chinese x86 CPU developer Zhaoxin is working on adding support in the Linux kernel for scheduling optimization on its processors featuring "preferred cores." Similar to asymmetric core designs from Intel and AMD, Zhaoxin's chips may have specific higher-performance cores the OS scheduler should target for critical workloads. GIGABYTE Releases AGESA 1.1.0.1a AM5 Motherboard BIOS Updates, Suggests 8700G Based on "Hawk Point," Not "Phoenix"
GIGABYTE released UEFI firmware (BIOS) updates for its Socket AM5 motherboards encapsulating the AMD AGESA ComboAM5 PI 1.1.0.1a microcode. This latest version of AGESA has sparked speculation that some of AMD's upcoming Ryzen 8000G desktop APUs are in fact based on the newer "Hawk Point" silicon, and not "Phoenix." AMD released its Ryzen 8040 series "Hawk Point" mobile processors earlier this month, with a faster NPU that results in an up to 40% increase in AI interference performance over that of "Phoenix." "Hawk Point" is essentially identical to "Phoenix," including its first generation XDNA architecture based NPU, however the NPU's clock speed has been dialed up. If AMD is building some of its Ryzen 8000G desktop APU models on "Hawk Point" instead of "Phoenix," then we have our first solid hint that AMD is bringing Ryzen AI to the desktop platform, and that the Ryzen 8000G will end up being the first desktop processors with an NPU.
AMD is expected to be building at least two APU models based on the "Hawk Point" silicon, the Ryzen 7 8700G, and the Ryzen 5 8600G. The lower models, namely the 8500G and Ryzen 3 8300G, are expected to be based on the smaller "Phoenix 2" silicon, with a hybrid CPU that combines two "Zen 4" cores with up to four "Zen 4c" cores. The "Zen 4c" cores may feature an identical instruction set architecture (ISA) and IPC to the regular "Zen 4" cores, but have tighter Vcore limits, and operate at lower clock speeds. This makes the two available "Zen 4" cores the de facto "performance" cores, and AMD flags them as UEFI CPPC "preferred cores," ensuring the OS guides a bulk of its processing traffic to them. NVIDIA's China-only GeForce RTX 4090D Launched with Fewer Shaders than Regular RTX 4090
NVIDIA today formally launched the China-specific GeForce RTX 4090D graphics card for gaming and creator applications, after it was banned this October by the United States Federal Trade Commission from exporting the RTX 4090 (among other AI GPUs) to China. The RTX 4090D comes with a reduced AI inference performance than the RTX 4090 to comply with the US-FTC limits, and measures are put in place to prevent end-users from modifying it into a regular RTX 4090. Besides firmware and driver-level performance limiters, the card gets a completely different ASIC code, a different device ID (which prevents BIOS transplants from the RTX 4090); and a different core-configuration of the 5 nm "AD102" silicon itself.
The "AD102" silicon physically has 72 TPCs (144 SM), from which NVIDIA carved out the original RTX 4090 by enabling 64 TPCs (128 SM). The new RTX 4090D only gets 57 TPCs (114 SM), which reduces the counts of the CUDA cores, Tensor cores, and RT cores. While the original RTX 4090 has 16,384 CUDA cores, 512 Tensor cores, and 128 RT cores; the new RTX 4090D is configured with 14,592 CUDA cores, 456 Tensor cores, and 114 RT cores. The GPU clocks are the same, both boost up to 2.52 GHz, although the power limits are reduced, with the TGP lowered by 25 W. The memory sub-system appears untouched. We are also hearing that overclocking of the RTX 4090D will be limited, with lower slider limits—all to prevent end-users from regaining AI inference performance levels comparable to an RTX 4090. Nerfed GeForce RTX 4090D for China to Launch Today

Thermalright today introduced the TL-M12 fan. This conventional thickness 120 mm fan is designed look good as a rear exhaust, or as part of a radiator's ventilation. Thermalright focused on aesthetic touches to the fan frame when viewed from the sides. Two of the frame's sides has an infinite-reflection ARGB LED element. The bore of the frame, and the impeller itself aren't illuminated. The fan comes in two color options—black and white (TL-M12W). SilverStone today introduced what is possibly the highest Wattage PSU in the SFX-L form-factor, the Extreme1200R Platinum. This contemporary PSU meets SFX12V 4.1 specification, which is comparable to ATX 3.1, along with PCIe CEM 5. It includes a native 12V-2x6 power connector capable of 600 W continuous power delivery and excursions within the PCIe Gen 5 spec. 12V-2x6 is a successor to 12VHPWR, and is designed to be less flimsy and prone to burn-outs than 12VHPWR, from improper connector coupling or cable bending.
The SilverStone Extreme1200R Platinum delivers 1200 W using a single 100 A +12 V rail, with Cybenetics Platinum rated switching efficiency. It comes with an all Japanese capacitor design, with most common electrical protections, against over/under voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. NVIDIA RTX 4080 SUPER Sticks with AD103 Silicon, 16GB of 256-bit Memory
Recent [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] of unreleased MSI RTX 40-series SUPER graphics cards seem to confirm that the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is getting 16 GB of memory, likely across a 256-bit memory interface, as NVIDIA is tapping into the larger "AD103" silicon to create it. The company had maxed out the "AD104" silicon with the current RTX 4070 Ti. What's also interesting is that they point to the RTX 4080 SUPER having the same 16 GB of 256-bit memory as the RTX 4080. NVIDIA carved the current RTX 4080 out of the "AD103" by enabling 76 out of 80 SM (38 out of 40 TPCs). So it will be interesting to see if NVIDIA manages to achieve the performance goals of the RTX 4080 SUPER by simply giving it 512 more CUDA cores (from 9,728 to 10,240). The three other levers NVIDIA has at its disposal are GPU clocks, power limits, and memory speeds. The RTX 4080 uses 22.4 Gbps memory speed, which it can increase to 23 Gbps.
The current RTX 4080 has a TGP of 320 W, compared to the 450 W of the AD102-based RTX 4090, and RTX 4080 cards tend to include an NVIDIA-designed adapter that converts three 8-pin PCIe connectors to a 12VHPWR with signal pins denoting 450 W continuous power capability. In comparison, RTX 4090 cards include a 600 W capable adapter with four 8-pin inputs. Even with the 450 W capable adapter, NVIDIA has plenty of room to raise the TGP of the RTX 4080 SUPER up from the 320 W of the older RTX 4080, to increase GPU clocks besides maxing out the "AD103" silicon. Intel's non-K 65W 14th Gen Core Processors Listed on European Retailer
Ahead of its rumored January 8 announcement, various unreleased 14th Gen Intel Core desktop processors got listed on European e-tailer CoolMod. These are non-K (65 W) processor models. The lineup begins with the Core i3-14100F, a 4P+0E processor without integrated graphics, priced at €124.94. If you need the iGPU, it will cost you at least €25 more, for the i3-14100 at €149.96. The most hotly anticipated chip among the lineup, the Core i5-14400F is priced at €219.95. A notch up is the i5-14500, going for a steep €249.95. Interestingly, the store has the i5-14400 (witth the iGPU) listed at the same exact price. There is no i5-14600 listed.
The Core i7-14700F is priced at €384.95. This chip has an 8P+12E configuration, which is the same as the i7-14700K, but with lower base frequency, and tighter power limits. It lacks an iGPU, and if you need one, then the i7-14700 is listed at €409.95. At the upper crust of the lineup you have the Core i9-14900F at €574.96, which has the full 8P+16E core configuration, but lower clock speeds than the i9-14900K, and no iGPU, which can be had for €25 more, with the i9-14900 at €599.95. Chinese x86 CPU developer Zhaoxin is working on adding support in the Linux kernel for scheduling optimization on its processors featuring "preferred cores." Similar to asymmetric core designs from Intel and AMD, Zhaoxin's chips may have specific higher-performance cores the OS scheduler should target for critical workloads. To enable this, Zhaoxin has proposed Linux patches leveraging existing ACPI functionality to indicate per-core differences in max frequency or capabilities. GIGABYTE Releases AGESA 1.1.0.1a AM5 Motherboard BIOS Updates, Suggests 8700G Based on "Hawk Point," Not "Phoenix"
GIGABYTE released UEFI firmware (BIOS) updates for its Socket AM5 motherboards encapsulating the AMD AGESA ComboAM5 PI 1.1.0.1a microcode. This latest version of AGESA has sparked speculation that some of AMD's upcoming Ryzen 8000G desktop APUs are in fact based on the newer "Hawk Point" silicon, and not "Phoenix." AMD released its Ryzen 8040 series "Hawk Point" mobile processors earlier this month, with a faster NPU that results in an up to 40% increase in AI interference performance over that of "Phoenix." "Hawk Point" is essentially identical to "Phoenix," including its first generation XDNA architecture based NPU, however the NPU's clock speed has been dialed up. If AMD is building some of its Ryzen 8000G desktop APU models on "Hawk Point" instead of "Phoenix," then we have our first solid hint that AMD is bringing Ryzen AI to the desktop platform, and that the Ryzen 8000G will end up being the first desktop processors with an NPU.
AMD is expected to be building at least two APU models based on the "Hawk Point" silicon, the Ryzen 7 8700G, and the Ryzen 5 8600G. The lower models, namely the 8500G and Ryzen 3 8300G, are expected to be based on the smaller "Phoenix 2" silicon, with a hybrid CPU that combines two "Zen 4" cores with up to four "Zen 4c" cores. The "Zen 4c" cores may feature an identical instruction set architecture (ISA) and IPC to the regular "Zen 4" cores, but have tighter Vcore limits, and operate at lower clock speeds. This makes the two available "Zen 4" cores the de facto "performance" cores, and AMD flags them as UEFI CPPC "preferred cores," ensuring the OS guides a bulk of its processing traffic to them. NVIDIA's China-only GeForce RTX 4090D Launched with Fewer Shaders than Regular RTX 4090
NVIDIA today formally launched the China-specific GeForce RTX 4090D graphics card for gaming and creator applications, after it was banned this October by the United States Federal Trade Commission from exporting the RTX 4090 (among other AI GPUs) to China. The RTX 4090D comes with a reduced AI inference performance than the RTX 4090 to comply with the US-FTC limits, and measures are put in place to prevent end-users from modifying it into a regular RTX 4090. Besides firmware and driver-level performance limiters, the card gets a completely different ASIC code, a different device ID (which prevents BIOS transplants from the RTX 4090); and a different core-configuration of the 5 nm "AD102" silicon itself.
The "AD102" silicon physically has 72 TPCs (144 SM), from which NVIDIA carved out the original RTX 4090 by enabling 64 TPCs (128 SM). The new RTX 4090D only gets 57 TPCs (114 SM), which reduces the counts of the CUDA cores, Tensor cores, and RT cores. While the original RTX 4090 has 16,384 CUDA cores, 512 Tensor cores, and 128 RT cores; the new RTX 4090D is configured with 14,592 CUDA cores, 456 Tensor cores, and 114 RT cores. The GPU clocks are the same, both boost up to 2.52 GHz, although the power limits are reduced, with the TGP lowered by 25 W. The memory sub-system appears untouched. We are also hearing that overclocking of the RTX 4090D will be limited, with lower slider limits—all to prevent end-users from regaining AI inference performance levels comparable to an RTX 4090. Thermalright today introduced the TL-M12 fan. This conventional thickness 120 mm fan is designed look good as a rear exhaust, or as part of a radiator's ventilation. Thermalright focused on aesthetic touches to the fan frame when viewed from the sides. Two of the frame's sides has an infinite-reflection ARGB LED element. The bore of the frame, and the impeller itself aren't illuminated. The fan comes in two color options—black and white (TL-M12W). It takes a 4-pin PWM input for its main function, and 3-pin addressable RGB for the lighting. The Thermalright TL-M12 features a fluid dynamic bearing. It turns at speeds of up to 1,500 RPM, pushing up to 47.6 CFM of airflow, at 1.31 mm H₂O static pressure; and with a maximum noise output of 23.2 dBA.
