Huawei's KunPeng 930 is an 80-Core CPU made on TSMC N5
Huawei's newest data center CPU, the KunPeng 930, underwent an analysis and teardown thanks to a creator named Kurnal on YouTube and BiliBili. The package is large, roughly 77.5 mm by 58.0 mm, and combines dense compute tiles manufactured at TSMC's 5 nm node with a sizable I/O die produced at SMIC on a more mature process, a possible 14 nm node. That hybrid split lets Huawei chase SRAM density and core scaling where it matters while shifting I/O and routing to a foundry that can absorb volume and ease supply pressure. Each compute tile contains forty Arm-derived cores tuned as the Taishan family, and the platform can be configured to reach a maximum of 80 cores in dual-die SKUs. The I/O die offers broad connectivity, as evidenced by teardown images that reveal a platform designed for 96 PCIe lanes.
At the component level, the KunPeng 930 shows cache and memory density have been a priority. Inside the compute tiles, there is a pair of private 2 MB L2 caches per core, with approximately 91 MB of shared L3 cache on the same die, representing a significant increase over the previous generation. DDR5 memory controllers are present on these compute tiles, and Huawei's diagrams indicate that there are 12 memory channels per chiplet, resulting in a total of 24 channels per processor. The photographed board shows sixteen DIMM sockets, which implies that not every theoretical memory channel is routed. The processor advertises up to 96 PCIe lanes, although the board only exposes about 80, reflecting routing and cost trade-offs. An SMIC-made I/O die would ease volume production but raise the need for firmware and software tuning to extract peak performance, so we are yet to see how these chips perform in server-centric benchmarks.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Aside from the usual flurry of bug fixes, stability improvements, and general package updates, the biggest update to the CachyOS August 2025 release is the addition of a web-based package curation service called packages.cachy.org, which lists all the packages in the standard CachyOS repositories. Users can use the search functions filter by repository and narrow down their search with a description and package name search field. It also shows when the package was last updated and which architectures the packages are available for. CachyOS users with AMD RDNA 3 GPUs can also now enable the use of FSR 4 with the built-in Proton-CachyOS (a forked, modified version of Valve's compatibility layer), and NVIDIA and Intel users can use the built-in DLSS and XeSS upgraders to force the latest versions of Intel and NVIDIA's super sampling tech.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Intel CFO Bets on "Nova Lake" to Close "Arrow Lake" Desktop Gap
At a Deutsche Bank technology conference, Intel CFO David Zinsner told investors that the company is placing its hopes on "Nova Lake" to repair weaknesses left by the current "Arrow Lake" lineup. He acknowledged the desktop family did not deliver the dollar-for-dollar competitiveness Intel wanted, even when unit shipments looked relatively strong. The Core Ultra 200 generation fell short in several high-profile gaming comparisons and experienced early stability issues that necessitated multiple firmware and software updates. Intel attempted to mitigate criticism with an approved overclocking program that allowed partners to ship validated boost profiles, but this effort did not fully address questions about the value of its flagship products. Zinsner called Nova Lake a broader, more complete set of SKUs that should help Intel recover market footing once the chips arrive in 2026.
Intel is pitching Nova Lake as more than a simple refresh, with redesigned cores, higher counts on select parts, and beefed-up integrated graphics aimed at the premium desktop segment. Independent testing and some early engineering samples will be needed to confirm real-world gains, so claims about performance remain unproven. Some enthusiasts may worry about another platform change, as Nova Lake will require a new socket, which complicates upgrade choices compared to platforms that promise longer longevity. Zinsner also noted parallel server roadmap adjustments, including a return to multi-threading and refinements to future Xeon families. For desktop buyers, the next year promises to be eventful as Intel tries to close the gap while rival AMD continues its own roadmap, shifting to Zen 6.[Only registered and activated users can see links.
