Minisforum Shows Off Strix Halo Desktop with 80 Gbps USB4 V2 Ports
The new Minisforum MS-S1 Max AI desktop is a mini-tower desktop powered by a mobile-on-desktop (MoDT) mainboard featuring an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 "Strix Halo" processor. Perhaps the most interesting feature about the product flyer is the desktop's implementation of 80 Gbps USB4 V2 ports, which is probably the industry's first, at least in the client segment. The USB4 specification was originally drafted in 2019 for three bandwidth tiers—20 Gbps, 40 Gbps, and 80 Gbps, the latter coming out with the 2022 standardization of USB4 v2.0.
USB4 v2.0 isn't just PCIe Gen 4 physical with a USB link layer, but implements a new PAM3 coding scheme over an existing pin-count, and is designed to be compatible with "passive" 40 Gbps-capable USB4 cables for a fixed 80 Gbps per-direction bandwidth. The standard also proposes a new active cable design that enables asymmetric bandwidth distribution between the Tx and Rx lanes, allowing the host and guest to have 120 Gbps of bandwidth in one direction, and 40 Gbps in the other, which could prove useful in certain scenarios such as heavy data transfers from portable SSDs or eGPU enclosures. Sounds familiar? That's because this is exactly what Thunderbolt 5 offers with its Bandwidth Boost feature Intel innovated. These aside, the MS-S1 max is a fairly straightforward MoDT implementation of the "Strix Halo."[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]

Intel won't Abandon Glass Substrates, will License Tech to Externals
According to a report by South Korean outlet ETNews, cited by TrendForce, Intel has begun licensing its semiconductor glass substrate technology to external companies, marking a notable change in its business approach. As [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...], Intel had already signaled a retreat from producing glass substrates in-house, preferring instead to source finished solutions from specialized vendors. Intel is now reportedly in discussions with glass substrate makers, materials suppliers, and equipment providers about granting usage rights under defined terms in exchange for royalties. Rather than abandoning glass substrates, Intel appears to be repositioning itself as a technology licensor, allowing others to handle manufacturing while it benefits from its patent portfolio. This strategy, according to industry insiders, could accelerate wider market adoption by helping newcomers advance more quickly. Intel's shift is also seen as a response to [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] in its manufacturing operations. By issuing licenses, the company can monetize its innovations while large-scale production is not expected until after 2030.
The glass substrate market is gaining momentum, with Absolics (an SKC subsidiary) already starting prototype production at its Georgia plant, which has an annual capacity of 12,000 square meters. Absolics plans to complete mass production setup by the end of 2025 and becoming the first to commercialize the technology. (PR) Newegg Announces First Half 2025 Results
Newegg Commerce, Inc. (NASDAQ: NEGG) (the "Company" or "Newegg"), a leading global technology e-commerce retailer, today announced results for the six months ended June 30, 2025.
"Newegg experienced strong year-over-year growth in the first half of 2025, driven primarily by increased demand for GPUs and other core PC components, including the highly successful launch of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series and AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series graphics cards, and AMD Ryzen 9000X3D Series CPUs," said Newegg Chief Executive Officer Anthony Chow. "These new product launches further boosted organic traffic and spurred robust cross-category purchasing, driving both topline growth and improved gross margins. We also benefited from pull-forward spending due to tariff uncertainty while simultaneously minimizing tariff impact on supply chain and customer experience through close collaboration with our key partners and suppliers. I am pleased with our results, and we will continue to be agile and opportunistic throughout the remainder of the year as we aim to deliver a superior experience for our loyal Newegg customers."[Only registered and activated users can see links. NVIDIA "Rubin" Platform Enters Trial Production at TSMC, CEO Jensen Hu
NVIDIA confirmed today that it has taped out six distinct "Rubin" chips, which signals something more than a typical product refresh. Company CEO Jensen Huang, speaking during a visit to Taiwan, said NVIDIA already handed multiple Rubin designs to TSMC and that those dies are now entering fab qualification ahead of trial production. Rubin is intended to be a platform-level upgrade, rather than a simple GPU update, with changes extending across processors, networking gear, and interconnect silicon. Customers and cloud operators will be watching closely as NVIDIA prepares what it describes as the next major compute platform. According to Jensen, the taped designs include a dedicated CPU, new GPU variants, a scale-up NVLink switch, and a silicon photonics processor aimed at improving rack-scale connectivity and off-chip optics.
Rubin will adopt chiplet partitioning for the first time in NVIDIA's product line and is planned for TSMC's N3P process with CoWoS-L packaging. Memory is expected to transition to next-generation HBM4 stacks to sustain higher bandwidth, featuring a custom base die. The physical compute die layout will utilize a larger reticle area compared to the current generation. NVIDIA says it is coordinating hardware changes with software updates, including compiler and runtime improvements that will leverage the new topology. The company projects market introductions around 2026 for Rubin and 2027 for Rubin Ultra, depending on trial production and yields. Early validation is already underway, covering thermal, power, and interconnect scenarios. The Rubin transition from Blackwell is shaping up to be a big step, and in the new generation of [Only registered and activated users can see links. NVIDIA at Hot Chips 2025 Pushes Blackwell to Power Neural Rendering
NVIDIA's Hot Chips 2025 appearance on the graphics track was less about new silicon and more about a change in emphasis. Blackwell is being presented as a platform that makes machine learning a natural part of rendering rather than an add-on. The company showed how the architecture stretches from big datacenter cards all the way down to laptop GPUs and explained why that range matters. Instead of relying on brute-force raster work, the focus is on neural approaches, such as denoising and learned frame generation, that can reproduce or enhance pixels at far lower cost. To support that shift, NVIDIA is moving toward FP4 math to shrink memory and compute footprints, and it has invested in scheduler improvements like shader execution reordering and heavy integer work so streaming multiprocessors stay busy. The talk also showed an on-chip AI management processor that coordinates data and priorities so graphics shaders and inference kernels do not block one another.
The practical plumbing behind these concepts mattered as much as the models. Blackwell's GDDR7 support delivers more usable bandwidth at lower voltages, which helps both traditional rendering passes and large tensor jobs. NVIDIA described techniques to shorten the time to first token in mixed workloads so interactive agents and graphics can meet different latency needs. The company pushed the idea of a "race to idle," where a system uses learned interpolation or selective inference in place of a full render to save power. Finally, features borrowed from the datacenter world, such as Universal MIG, let a single GPU be split into many smaller virtual GPUs, improving utilization for light clients and yielding sizable gains over simple time slicing. The net message was clear: Blackwell is not just about adding TeraFLOPS. It is about rethinking scheduling and blending ML with graphics to make real-time, efficient experiences practical. Neural rendering is where the graphics world is headed, and NVIDIA wants to accelerate every stage of the pipeline.[Only registered and activated users can see links.
