(PR) EK Releases PowerColor RX 7900 Red Devil Water Blocks
The first EK-Quantum Vector² RX 7900 XTX water block for an AIB partner Radeon RX 7000 Series GPU has just been released. EK, the premium water cooling gear manufacturer, is introducing its water block for the new PowerColor Red Devil AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. The Red Devil conquers by relentlessly pushing its power to the limit making the EK-Quantum Vector² water block an ideal match for achieving the best performance and minimum noise. Still, it's recommended you refer to the EK Cooling Configurator for a precise compatibility match.

This AMD Radeon Edition Vector² water block effortlessly solves the issue of excessive heat generation during high load on the GPU. This liquid cooling solution cools the graphics compute die, voltage regulation module, voltage controllers, VRAM, and MCDs on the Red Devil Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card. The new Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPUs have GCD manufactured in a cutting-edge 5 nm process, allowing a 54% improvement in performance per watt. While the GPU is efficient, it still uses more power than the previous generation. Its 300 mm² GCD contains 165% more transistors per mm² than the previous generation. This means these GPUs feature 58 billion transistors for 61 TFLOPs of performance—all the more reason to have them water-cooled.

Atari Calls it Quits on the Atari VCS
What can only be summed up as one of the biggest failures when it comes to gaming consoles, the Atari VCS, is coming to an end, as Atari has decided to pull the plug. The company is said to have cancelled all of its "existing VCS manufacturing contracts", which means that after its current stock is sold out, it's unlikely that the company will make any more VCS consoles. The company is offering its current stock at a 20 percent discount, to anyone that would be interested in throwing away their money.

Atari's revenue from sales of the VCS and its accessories dropped from €2.3 million last year, to an abysmal €0.2 million this year, or a drop in revenue of 92 percent based on Atari's latest earnings report. This suggests that the company went from selling around a million units to selling around 10,000 units, based on the retail pricing of the VCS. Atari is apparently planning on launching new games based on its intellectual property, as well as getting into NFTs in the future, in addition to potentially licensing its brand to third parties for new hardware products. It would appear that history is repeating itself when it comes to Atari's success and not in a good way, as the company had a net loss of €5.4 million this year.

GPU Prices Safe For Now as USTR Extends Tariff Exclusion
The feared import tariff increase that could've taken place in the US in the new year, has been pushed thanks to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). As such, graphics cards won't see a price hike in the new year, alongside a range of other products in 352 different categories, which also includes other types of PCBs and computer hardware. The tariff exclusion is known as Section 301 and was supposed to run its course by the end of this year, but will be extended for another nine months.

As to what will happen after the nine months extension, is anyone's guess at this point in time, as the USTR is having a review of the effectiveness of Section 301. The USTR has already had a first review, where parties that have benefitted from the tariffs have been able to leave feedback, early next year, parties that have been opposed to the tariff will also be able to leave their feedback. After the review, it'll be up to the US government to decide the future of the tariffs imposed against Chinese made products. This could lead to even more expensive computer components in the future in the US, but for now, nothing will change.

(PR) Genesis Releases Irid 505 v2 and Irid 503 v2 PC Cases
Introducing new, enhanced PC cases: Genesis Irid 505 v2 and Irid 503 v2. Better ventilation, design and enhanced filtering for superior protection from dust - these are the most important traits of the new Genesis PC cases: Irid 505 v2 and Irid 503 v2. Enhanced PC cases, Irid 505 v2 and 503 v2, are the company's answer to increasing user demand for spacious PC cases which can include a new generation of multi-core CPUs and highly efficient graphics cards.

A thicker front mesh of the Genesis Irid 505 v2 and 503 v2 provides better filtration for air that goes into the cases in a wide stream thanks to its open front design. The 0.8 mm openings make the front mesh more restrictive dust-wise when compared to other, standard anti-dust filters. Additionally, it is very easy to clean, for example with a wipe, without the need to dismantle anything.

MSI Settles Debate on its Radeon RX 7900 Series Launch
MSI was conspicuous with its lack of Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards at launch, with neither product announcements, nor even placeholder product pages on its website as of this writing. Rumors started to fly on social media that the company is skipping the RX 7900 series, and that all is not well between MSI and AMD Radeon group. MSI last week laid many of these rumors to rest, with its MSI Gaming Twitter handle quote-tweeting an AMD Radeon handle with the message "Available Soon."

Andreas Schilling of HardwareLuxx.de added more clarity on the issue with some first-hand info: although MSI skipped the December 12/13 launch dates, the company is preparing to release some custom-design RX 7900 series cards, and will present them in Q1-2023. The company is however skipping the launch of reference-design MBA (made by AMD) cards under its own brand—something most other AMD add-in board (AIB) partners did release on December 12. Although AMD directly sells reference-design cards, it also sells them through its AIB partners, by allowing them to use their own brand identity, custom packaging, inclusions, and product warranty specific to the brand.

GALAX Blurts Out GeForce RTX 4090 Ti HOF Product Branding
GALAX in its website's front-page carousel, may have inadvertently blurted out the existence of a GeForce RTX 4090 Ti "Ada" SKU in the works. This may well be a typo by the designer of its carousel graphic, but the existence of an RTX 4090 Ti SKU isn't a question of if, but when. We know from our September 2022 article that the RTX 4090 only uses 88% of the streaming multiprocessors (SM) physically present on the 4 nm AD102 silicon (that's 128 out of 144 SM, or 16,384 out of 18,432 CUDA cores), although it maxes out its 384-bit GDDR6X memory bus.

The way NVIDIA carved the RTX 4090 out of the AD102 leaves it with plenty of room to create a faster SKU that maxes out the silicon, backing it with more GPU clock speed, possibly even 23 Gbps-rated GDDR6X memory, resulting in a top-spec flagship with ≥10% higher performance than the RTX 4090, to consolidate NVIDIA's position in the high-end segment—not that it's under much of a threat from AMD right now. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX trades blows with the RTX 4080, and is barely a threat to the RTX 4090. NVIDIA would still want something to sell at $2,000 if not more, and the only way it can do so is by maxing out the AD102 and hope that enthusiasts wanting to climb performance leaderboards would want such a card.

AMD Software Adrenalin 22.12.2 WHQL Exclusively for RX 7900 Series Released
AMD released the Adrenalin 22.12.2 WHQL drivers exclusively for the recently launched Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT graphics cards. These drivers do not support any other product series (which is why TechPowerUp isn't hosting them in our Downloads section). Compared to the previous 22.11.2 WHQL drivers from mid-December (which lack RX 7900 series support), the 22.12.2 WHQL doesn't pack any game-specific optimizations, but corrects a handful of issues.

To begin with, AMD has improved the power-consumption of the RX 7900 series cards during hardware-accelerated video playback. Display corruption observed for Virtual Super Resolution (VSR) with multi-display configurations, has been fixed. A system crash observed when changing display modes in machines with 4 display, has been fixed. An application crash or driver timeout observed with Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales after enabling ray tracing, has been fixed. Grab the driver from the link below.
Intel Reorganises its Graphics Chip Division, Raja Koduri Seemingly Demoted
Big things are afoot at Intel's graphics chip division once again, as the company has just broken up its Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics (AXG) business unit which will result in some big changes. For starters, Raja Koduri has been—what we can only refer to as—demoted, given he's back to being chief architect rather than being in charge of the AXG business unit. Some of his staff will be moved to other business units inside Intel as the AXG business unit will cease to exist. This doesn't mean Intel will stop making discrete consumer GPUs, with at least the Battlemage/Arc B-series launch still being planned to take place sometime in 2023.

At the same time, it looks like Raja Koduri will be out of action for what is likely to be at least a month since he posted on Twitter that he's had emergency back surgery while on a business trip. How this will affect his transition back to his role as chief architect is anyone's guess at this point in time. However, he will not be focusing solely on GPUs in the future, but the broader range of products that Intel offers—particularly the integration of GPU, CPU and AI architectures at Intel. We've posted an official statement from Intel after the break, which Intel provided to Tom's Hardware. We also wish Raja a speedy recovery!

GIGABYTE RTX 4070 Ti Pictured, Includes 2x 8-pin to 16-pin Adapter for 300W Power Delivery
Here are some of the first pictures of a GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 Ti custom-design graphics cards, the RTX 4070 Ti AERO. GIGABYTE targets the AERO brand of graphics cards, motherboards, and notebooks, at creators who like to game, hence the product design that's a lot less flashy than the company's AORUS or Gaming OC brands of graphics cards. An interesting aspect of this card is that it features a 16-pin ATX 12VHPWR connector, and includes an NVIDIA-supplied power adapter that converts two 8-pin PCIe power connectors to one 12VHPWR. We know this adapter is different from the 2x 8-pin to 12-pin adapter NVIDIA included with the RTX 3080 Founders Edition, looking at the four sensor pins.

The connector has keying for 300 W, and so the typical board power of the RTX 4070 Ti will be at or below 300 W. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is essentially a re-branding of what would have been the RTX 4080 12 GB, had NVIDIA not decided to "unlaunch" it. The SKU maxes out the 4 nm "AD104" silicon, featuring 7,680 CUDA cores across 60 streaming multiprocessors (SM), 240 Tensor cores, 60 RT cores, 240 TMUs, and 80 ROPs. The chip features a 192-bit GDDR6X memory interface, which was at the heart of the RTX 4080 12 GB naming controversy.

Intel Core i9-13900HX 8P+16E Mobile Processor Beats Desktop i9-12900K and i7-13700K
Intel's "Raptor Lake" microarchitecture will go mobile this 2023 International CES, with the company planning to substantially expand its 13th Gen Core processor family for notebooks, ultraportables, convertibles, tablets, and pretty much any PC form-factor that you can carry around. The high-end enthusiast mobile parts see processors in the 55 W to 65 W (or higher) TDP range, and with the same 8P+16E core-configuration as the desktop Core i9-13900K, including support for enthusiast features such as overclocking.

The leaky taps on social media are ready with some of the first benchmarks of Intel's new mobile flagship, the Core i9-13900HX. The Geekbench score of the chip puts it faster than the desktop Core i7-13700K (8P+8E) and Core i9-12900K "Alder Lake" (8P+8E), which enjoy power limits of up to 251 W, base power of 125 W, and a much more relaxed power-management scheme compared to a mobile chip like the i9-13900HX. The processor scores 2039 points in the single-threaded test, and 20493 points in the multi-threaded one, which puts it ahead of the desktop i7-13700K (which in turn is faster than the i9-12900K). Geekbench detects the processor to feature a maximum P-core boost frequency of 5.40 GHz, which isn't too far from the 5.60 GHz of the 65 W desktop i9-13900 (non-K). CES promises to be action-packed with Intel expected to announce dozens of 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" mobile processor SKUs, and NVIDIA expected to announce the first mobile variants of its GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" GPUs.

Blacklisting of YMTC by the U.S. Enables Samsung to Raise NAND Flash Prices by 10%
YMTC, the Chinese DRAM and NAND flash company that recently announced a 232-layer 3D NAND flash memory that threatened to disrupt entrenched players Samsung, Micron Technology, Kioxia, and SK Hynix, has been blacklisted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, forcing American consumer electronics and PC manufacturers to stop sourcing from the company. Capitalizing on just this, Samsung raised prices of its NAND flash memory chips by as much as 10%, according to a DigiTimes report.

YMTC peaked when Apple struck a NAND flash supply deal with the company in 2020, which would see its storage devices power pretty much every Apple product you can think of, however, under political pressure, Apple withdrew from this deal in 2022. The Department of Commerce contention has been to that YMTC has access to cutting-edge technology, and is backed by Chinese state-capacity, which can help it drive out competitors. All is not well between the U.S. and China geopolitically, either. Samsung's 10% increase in the first half of December 2022 concerns spot-pricing, which could mean its contract pricing (usually used by customers placing very large orders), could be different. It is conceivable that the exit of YMTC from the U.S. market could raise NAND flash product prices across the board.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000WX "Storm Peak" Only by Q3-2023
AMD won't release its Ryzen Threadripper 7000WX "Storm Peak" workstation processors any time before September 2023, suggests a reliable source with AMD leaks. The push to Q3 probably has to do with giving AMD enough "Zen 4" CCD volumes to ship high-margin EPYC "Genoa" server processors first, before the company can turn its attention to the HEDT and workstation markets.

While all indications are that AMD give the "Zen 4" Threadripper a similar treatment this generation as it did with the "Zen 3," by confining it to the workstation segment with only Threadripper 7000WX SKUs that could be OEM-exclusives before crawling their way to the retail market; the source has an interesting theory, that the company could even target the client HEDT market with these chips. The company will also adequately segment the Threadripper 7000WX SKUs apart from EPYC "Genoa" processors.

Cougar Intros Forza 50 and Forza 85 Essential-series Tower-type CPU Coolers
Cougar introduced the Forza 50 Essential and Forza 85 Essential tower-type CPU coolers. The Forza 50 is the lighter and slimmer of the two, with a fin-stack thickness of 50 mm, while the Forza 85 Essential has an 85 mm-thick fin-stack, hence the names. The Forza 50 Essential uses a heatpipe direct-touch (HDT) base, and relies on four 6 mm-thick copper heatpipes to pull heat from the CPU, and convey it through the fin-stack, while the Forza 85 Essential has six of these for the job, but through a nickel-plated copper base-plate.

Both models include a Cougar NHP120 fan. This 120 mm spinner takes in 4-pin PWM input, spins at speeds of up to 2,000 RPM, pushing up to 84.48 CFM of airflow at 4.24 mm H₂O static-pressure, and up to 34.5 dBA noise output. The fans feature hydraulic bearings. With the fan in place, the Forza 50 Essential measures 135 mm x 75 mm x 155 mm (WxDxH) weighing 772 g, while the Forza 85 Essential measures 135 mm x 110 mm x 155 mm, weighing 1.13 kg. Among the CPU socket types supported by both are LGA1700, AM5, AM4, and LGA1200. The company didn't reveal pricing.

NVIDIA Could Give TITAN RTX Another Swing as Maxed-Out AD102 in an Unabashed 4-slot Monstrosity
A report by Moore's Law is Dead claims that NVIDIA is preparing to launch a new TITAN RTX halo product, based on a maxed-out 4 nm "AD102" silicon. Where does this put the RTX 4090 Ti? Somewhere in between the RTX 4090 and the TITAN RTX Ada, as NVIDIA gave itself plenty of segmentation headroom with the AD102 silicon, by using just 128 out of 144 SM physically present on the silicon, besides the same 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory as the previous-generation. NVIDIA's options with the new TITAN RTX include enabling all 144 SM (18,432 CUDA cores), and using faster 24 Gbps memory, giving the silicon (1152 GB/s memory bandwidth), a stock power-limit closer to the 600 W design limit of the 12VHPWR power connector (RTX 4090 stock typical board power is 450 W).

Moore's Law is Dead also posted what they claim to be the first real-world pictures of the upcoming TITAN RTX Ada. The card is an unabashed 4-slot enlargement of the dual-axial flow-through RTX 4090 Founders Edition, with the cooler capable of higher thermal loads. TITAN RTX cards are marketed as first-party Founders Edition cards only, and not through NVIDIA's AIC board partners as custom-designs. A maxed out AD102, with higher clock speeds, higher power-limit, and faster memory, should be unassailable for custom-design RTX 4090 cards, if NVIDIA wants to sell this card at the kind of prices its last TITAN RTX product sold at—USD $2,500.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU Pulls up to 200W, GA103-based, Line
At its 2023 International CES event, NVIDIA is expected to launch not just its desktop GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards, but more importantly, also its GeForce RTX 40-series Laptop GPU series powering next-generation gaming notebooks based on the upcoming 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" processors. NVIDIA seems to be making a very tight rope-walk between power-management and generational performance increase in this power- and thermal-constrained form-factor. Wccftech scored a major scoop on the specs of various RTX 40-series Laptop GPUs.

The GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" Laptop GPU lineup will be led by the RTX 4090 Laptop GPU, based on the 4 nm "AD103" silicon (same one that powers the desktop RTX 4080). It will be equipped with 16 GB of memory, a yet-unknown core-configuration, GPU Boost frequencies of up to 2.04 GHz, and typical power draw ranging between 150 W to 175 W, which can peak up to 200 W thanks to the 25 W dynamic boost range (power permissible by the platform if the other components such as CPU aren't drawing their peak power).

ASUS and Noctua to Unveil GeForce RTX 40-series Graphics Card
ASUS and Noctua have had great success with their limited edition GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards in the past. The collaboration saw ASUS-marketed graphics cards that combine an ASUS-designed PCB with a cooling solution designed and supplied by Noctua, combining their best VGA heatsink technology with a pair of their high static-pressure FDB fans. The ASUS x Noctua RTX 3080 (pictured below) remains among the best RTX 3080 cards we ever got a chance to test. It turns out that ASUS and Noctua will continue their collaboration with the new RTX 40-series "Ada" generation. ChipHell reports that ASUS will show off its next ASUS x Noctua graphics card(s) at the 2023 International CES. The report doesn't specify which GPU they will use. CES could see the introduction of at least two more RTX 40-series SKUs, namely the RTX 4070 Ti, and the RTX 4070, so it could be anything. Given that ASUS has given the Noctua treatment to the RTX 3080, it's quite possible that the RTX 4080 could get it too, at some point.

Micron Reports a Loss for FQ1 '23, Said to be laying off 10 Percent of Workforce
As we're nearing the end of 2022, there is more news about layoffs and this time around it's Micron that is looking at laying off some 10 percent of its workforce. The company announced its FQ1 '23 earnings today, or fiscal quarter one 2023, since not all companies follow the standard year when it comes to financial reporting. Micron saw revenues of US$4,085 billion for the quarter, down from US$6,643 billion in the previous quarter and down from US$7,687 billion the same quarter a year ago. However, the company made a net loss of US$195 million.

Micron's CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated "Micron's strong technology, manufacturing and financial position put us on solid footing to navigate the near-term environment, and we are taking decisive actions to cut our supply and expenses. We expect improving customer inventories to enable higher revenue in the fiscal second half, and to deliver strong profitability once we get past this downturn." These decisive actions include cutting 10 percent of its workforce according to Reuters, although this won't take place until sometime in 2023. Micron is also planning a cut in its CAPEX plans for its fiscal 2024, i.e. the company won't be investing as heavily as planned in new fabs, despite being granted money to do so by the US government.

(PR) EK Introduces the EK-Pro NVIDIA A100 80 GB Rack GPU Water Block
EK, the leading computer cooling solutions provider, is now offering an enterprise-grade GPU water block for PNY NVIDIA A100 80 GB PCIe data center GPUs. The EK-Pro GPU WB A100 80 GB Rack - Nickel + Inox is a high-performance water block specifically engineered to make the entire GPU and water block assembly as thin as possible, effectively allowing it to consume only a single PCIe slot width-wise. The water block is equipped with a rack-style terminal, considerably reducing the assembly height and increasing the chassis compatibility.

By spanning the entire PCB, the water block directly cools the GPU, HBM VRAM, and the VRM (voltage regulation module) as the cooling liquid is channeled directly over these critical areas.

(PR) Alphacool Intros Eisbecher Pump+Reservoir Combo with New Apex VPP Pump
With the Eisbecher Aurora reservoir in combination with the VPP Apex pump, Alphacool presents another stylish reservoir/pump combination. The combination of the classy Eisbecher with the elegant, powerful VPP Apex D5 pump results in a setup that should not be missing in any performance-oriented water cooling system.

The tube of the reservoir is made of real glass. The digitally addressable RGB LEDs in the pump top provide brilliant illumination and beautiful light reflections. A special ambient highlight is the illuminated fountain effect of the riser tube. The Apex VPP is a powerful pump that is compatible with the most popular D5/VPP tops and reservoir tanks. With the 4-pin fan connector, the speed of the pump can be read and controlled by PWM signal. Power is supplied to the Apex VPP via the SATA connector. The maximum head of 4.25 m and the potential flow rate of 340 L/h are clear arguments for using the pump in combination with the Eisbecher Aurora reservoir.

Huawei Prepares EUV Scanner for Sub-7 nm Chinese Chips
Huawei, the Chinese technology giant, has reportedly filed patents that it is developing extreme ultraviolet (EUV) scanners for use in the manufacturing process of semiconductors. This news comes amid increasing tensions between Huawei and the US government, which has imposed a series of sanctions on the company in recent years. According to UDN, Huawei has filed a patent that covers the entire EUV scanner with a 13.5 nm EUV light source, mirrors, lithography for printing circuits, and proper system control. While filing a patent is not the same as creating an accurate EUV scanner, it could enable China to produce a class of chips below 7 nm and have a homegrown semiconductor production, despite the ever-increasing US sanctions.

The development of EUV scanners is a significant milestone for Huawei and the semiconductor industry. However, the company's progress in this area may be hindered by the US government's sanctions, which have limited Huawei's access to certain technologies and markets. It is important to note that Chinese SMIC wanted to develop EUV fabrication based on third-party EUV tools; however, those plans were scrapped as the Wassenaar agreement came into action and prohibited the sales of advanced tools to Chinese companies. Huawei's development could represent a new milestone for the entire Chinese industry.

Intel "Raptor Lake Refresh" Meant to Fill in for Scrapped "Meteor Lake" Desktop?
Intel's 2023 roadmap for the desktop processor segment sees the company flesh out its 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" desktop family with 65 W (locked) SKUs, and the new i9-13900KS flagship; followed by a new lineup of processors under the "Raptor Lake Refresh" family, due for Q3-2023, with no mentions of a desktop "Meteor Lake" processor in the year. It turns out that "Raptor Lake Refresh" is being designed to fill in for these (i.e. there won't be any "Meteor Lake" desktop chips). This, according to OneRaichu, a reliable source with Intel leaks.

"Meteor Lake" is Intel's first client processor to fully incorporate the company's IDM 2.0 product development strategy of disintegrating the processor into multiple chiplets built on various foundry nodes based on design needs; and combining them onto a single package with a high-performance interconnect. "Meteor Lake" has just one problem and that is CPU core-counts, with rumors pointing to 6P+16E (6 performance cores + 16 efficiency cores) being the maximum core-count possible, something Intel probably feels won't be competitive in the desktop segment against AMD, which will probably have a lineup of "Zen 4" X3D processors out by Q3-2023, with up to 16 P-cores. The company will, however, give "Meteor Lake" a sizable launch in the various mobile segments.

Chinese Loongson Processor Uses Chiplet Design to Pack 32 Cores
Chinese processor designers need help creating a leading-edge design that satisfies their needs, with the imposed sanctions and restrictions of Western countries. However, designers are using creative ways to make a server processor to fulfill their needs. According to the latest Sina report, Chinese company Loongson has developed a 32-core processor using chiplet technology. Previously, the company announced its 16-core 3C5000 processor based on LA464 cores, which utilize LoongArch ISA. Loongson used chiplet technology to fuse two 3C5000 processors into a single-socket solution called 3D5000, which features 32 LA464 cores to create a higher-performing design. Based on the LGA-4129 package, the chip size is 75.4x58.5×6.5 mm.

The company claims that the typical power consumption is rated for 130 Watts at 2.0 GHz or 170 Watts at 2.2 GHz, with TDP power consumption not exceeding 300 Watts at 2.2 GHz even with peaks. The performance of the new 3D5000 processor, measured using SPEC2006, is 400 points and 800 points for single-socket and dual-socket servers, respectively. The four-socket server is expected to reach 1600 points in the same benchmark, so scaling is advertised as linear. Loongson hopes to provide samples to industry partners in the first half of 2023 with an unknown price tag.

Alienware 500 Hz Gaming Monitor Leaks Ahead of CES Reveal
Based on a leak on Twitter, Alienware is planning on announcing a 500 Hz capable gaming monitor at CES. According to the leaker, the new monitor will carry the AW2524AH model name, suggesting it's a 25-inch monitor. The general tech specs aren't likely to impress most people, as the display panel is as one would expect, only a 1080p panel, although it's at least a fast IPS panel rather than a TN panel.

The AW2524H delivers 480 Hz natively over DP, but has an OC setting which makes it reach 500 Hz. Based on the leaked picture of the rear of the display, it'll have some RGB elements, as well as a height adjustable stand, which most likely also allows the display to be rotated. The leaker didn't provide any kind of pricing, but expect this one to be a very expensive 1080p display.

Samsung Said to be Increasing Chip Production While Inflation is Increasing Cost of New Fabs
According to Reuters, Samsung is gearing up to increase the chip production capacity at its P3 factory in Pyeongtaek in South Korea, despite the fact that there's a general slowdown in the semiconductor industry, in addition to the general economic downturn. Samsung is apparently planning on adding 12-inch wafer capacity for DRAM, while also adding more 4 nm chip capacity. The P3 fab kicked off production of Samsung's most cutting-edge NAND flash chips earlier this year and is the company's largest fab overall. According to Reuters, Samsung is aiming to add at least 10 new EUV machines in 2023.

In related news via The Elec, Samsung has seen costs increase significantly when it comes to materials costs relating to the expansion of the P3 fab. So far, the company has racked up extra costs of over a trillion korean Won, or more than US$786 million, largely due to all of its contractors having raised their prices. The report also mentioned that some parts of the expansion of the P3 fab has been delayed by as much as a year, which isn't good news for Samsung and it likely means that the company will see further increases in costs before the expansions are finished.

TSMC to Mark 3 nm Mass Production Start, Looking at Potential New Fabs in Japan and Germany
According to news out of Taiwan, TSMC will hold a ceremony to mark the official mass production start of its 3 nm node on the 29th of December. This is said to help "shatter doubts about de-Taiwanization" or in simpler terms, that Taiwan will lose its golden goose as TSMC invests abroad. The 3 nm fab—known as fab 18—is based in southern Taiwan's Tainan and the ceremony also marks the start of an expansion of TSMC's most advanced fab. TSMC is said to be kicking off its N3E node production sometime in the second half of 2023, followed by its N3P node in 2024, all of which should take place at fab 18, which also produces 5 nm wafers.

In related news, according to Reuters, a Japanese lawmaker from the ruling party has said that TSMC is considering a second plant in Japan, in addition to its current joint venture that is already under construction. TSMC's response to Reuters was that the company isn't ruling out Japan for future fabs, but that the company doesn't have any current plans. At the same time, TSMC is said to be sending executives to Dresden, Germany in early 2023, for a second round of talks about building a fab to help support the European auto industry, although this would be a 28/22 nm fab, which is far from cutting edge these days, although a lot more advanced than most fabs making chips for the auto industry.

(PR) YoY Growth of NAND Flash Demand Bits Will Stay Under 30% from 2022 to 2025 as Demand Slows for PC Client SSDs, Says TrendForce
Client SSDs constituted a major driver of demand bit growth in the NAND Flash market for the past two years as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were spurring procurement activities related to working and studying from home. TrendForce currently projects that the attach rate of client SSDs among notebook computers will reach 92% in 2022 and around 96% in 2023. However, the demand surge related to the pandemic is subsiding, and the recent headwinds in the global economy have caused a demand freeze in the wider consumer electronics market. Hence, among the major application segments of the NAND Flash market, client SSDs are going to experience the most significant demand slowdown. This, in turn, will constrain demand bit growth as well. TrendForce projects that for the period from 2022 to 2025, the YoY growth rate of NAND Flash demand bits will remain below 30%.

The average NAND Flash content of client SSDs has already surpassed 500 GB this year. Quotes for 512 GB SSDs have fallen sharply and come to a level that is roughly comparable to the quotes that were given for 256 GB SSDs half-a-year ago. In fact, quotes for 512 GB SSDs are also near the level for HDDs with the same capacity. On the other hand, upgrading to 1 TB or higher for notebook SSDs could be challenging for PC OEMs mainly because the licensing fee for the Windows OS has a positive correlation with device specifications. Therefore, an increase in SSD capacity will raise the cost of a whole notebook computer. With PC OEMs being less keen on adopting SSDs that are 1 TB or higher, growth in the average NAND Flash content of client SSDs will also be more limited in the future.

Leaked MSI Intel B760 Chipset Motherboard Pricing Puts them Between $170-$230
At CES, Intel is expected to launch the bulk of its 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" processor family, consisting of "locked" 65 W SKUs; along with two cheaper motherboard chipset options than the Z790—the B760 and H770. The Bx60 chipset options are sought after by the mainstream desktop crowd that likes to buy value sub-$250 processor SKUs, but over the years, motherboard manufacturers have been upscaling Bx60 chipset with premium onboard components, to target the crowd that likes to buy the upper tier of 65 W SKUs (think Core i5-13600, i7-13700, or the top i9-13900 non-K). With the 700-series chipset, however, it looks like the price for entry for the platform has just gone up. The cheapest MSI motherboard based on the B760 chipset, according to a leaked price-list, is USD $170, for a PRO-series motherboard SKU that's usually considered entry-level for MSI.

The MSI PRO B760M-A WiFi DDR4 Micro-ATX motherboard, according to this price-list, goes for $170, followed by the PRO B760-P WiFi DDR4 (ATX form-factor) at $180. From here begins MSI's Gaming series motherboards. There are as many as four MAG Mortar SKUs. At $180, you get the MAG B760M Mortar DDR4. At $190 you get the MAG B760M Mortar (DDR5) and MAG B760M Mortar DDR4 WiFi; followed by the MAG B760M Mortar WiFi (DDR5) at $200. With this series, MSI is introducing a couple of MAG Mortar MAX SKUs, which probably feature better VRM or onboard audio. The DDR4 version is priced at $220, and the DDR5 version at $230. Moving a notch up, we have the popular MAG Tomahawk SKUs, with the DDR4 version at $220, and the DDR5 version at $230. The only MPG series SKU is also the lineup's only Mini-ITX one—the MPG B760I Edge WiFi DDR4, priced at $210.

AMD Ryzen 7000 non-X Series to Launch on January 10th
A few months ago, AMD has launched its highly anticipated Ryzen 7000 series of processors based on Zen 4 architecture. However, the company only launched the "X" SKUs (example being 7900X) for now, while the remaining ones are awaiting a launch date. Today, we have information from VideoCardz that confirm AMD's new launch on January 10th, when team red plans to update its remaining processor family with Ryzen 7000 series non-X SKUs. There will be three initial models to choose from Ryzen 9 7900 (12C/24T), Ryzen 7 7700 (8C/16T), and Ryzen 5 7600 (6C/12T). These SKUs follow the traditional Zen 4 path; however, the only distinction from their "X" counterparts is the reduced TDP to 65 Watts, down from up to 170 Watt TDP in some of those models.

A leaked slide from AMD's product presentation regarding these SKUs is a comparison between AMD's own Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 9 7900, where the Zen 4 variant successfully beat the older SKU by a significant percentage. Pricing and further details are listed on the slides below.

NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti Allegedly 5% Faster Than RTX 3090 Ti in OctaneBench
The upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards is allegedly 5% faster than the previous-generation flagship, RTX 3090 Ti, according to leaked OctaneBench numbers. The online submission database of the benchmark has an entry for the RTX 4070 Ti, which is shown scoring 725 points, compared to 688 of the RTX 3090 Ti, and 928 of the RTX 4080. These would put the RTX 4070 Ti at roughly 5% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti, and about 21% slower than the RTX 4080. You begin to see why it would have been a terrible idea to market the RTX 4070 Ti as the "RTX 4080 12 GB," and why the outrage was justified—which will only bear fruit if NVIDIA prices the RTX 4070 Ti lower than the $900 MSRP it had planned for the RTX 4080 12 GB.

(PR) MSI Launches the MEG Trident X2 Gaming PC
MSI, the leading brand of gaming products, is launching the MEG Trident X2 with the latest 13th-Gen Intel processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics card. This launch focuses on "Play Unbound". This gaming desktop is equipped with the Intel Core i9 processor, enjoying a 41% of performance increase compared with the previous generation. With RTX 40 Series equipped with the latest Fourth-Gen Tensor Cores, Third-Gen RT Cores, and New Streaming Multiprocessors, the frame rate performance of games has been greatly improved as well. Gamers can play at 100 frames under 4K image quality and with special effects turned on. Designed to completely liberate the next-generation performance, MSI's exclusive HMI (Human Machine Interface) has also ushered in a major upgrade. In addition to the original intuitive operation controls, a 4.5-inch touchscreen and G.I. function are now added.

This MEG Trident X2 is not only equipped with the top-of-the-line i9-13900K processor and RTX 4090 graphics card but also comes with MSI's exclusive Silent Storm Cooling 3 heat dissipation technology, which can effectively reduce the heat generated by components. The Air Baffle design can effectively collect the surrounding cold air and prevent the excess heat inside the chassis from flowing back to the graphics card. It is supplemented by the motherboard's upside-down design so that the graphics card is placed on the top to be cooled by the cold air first.

South Korean Chip Makers Affected by Slump in Chip Demand
It's not just TSMC and the other Taiwanese chip makers that are seeing a dip in demand, the Korean chip makers have seen a slump of 15 percent in the past four months, compared to 2021. This is said to be the biggest drop in chip demand since 2009 according to data from Statistics Korea. There's a combination of factors behind the slump in demand, especially when it comes to memory related products, where inventories already are high, combined with inflation and a low demand.

According to the Financial Times, an analyst at JPMorgan in Korea isn't expecting things to improve until 2024 at the earliest. Just like Micron and Kioxia, SK hynix is looking at cutting spending on new fabs and production lines, although as TPU reported earlier this week, Samsung is going its own way, by continuing to invest in new fabs and production lines. Samsung is expected to have a capex of US$37.5 billion this year back in October, although based on the increase in costs, the capex would have increased in the fourth quarter of the year. On the plus side, it seems like the shortage of semiconductors should ease in 2023 and hopefully return to more normal levels.

NVIDIA France Accidentally Reveals GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Specs
With less than a week to go until the official launch of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, NVIDIA France has gone and spoiled things by revealing the official specs of the upcoming GPU. The French division of NVIDIA appears to have posted the full product page, but it has since then been pulled. That didn't prevent Twitter leaker @momomo_us from snapping a couple of screenshots, including that of the official performance numbers from NVIDIA.

There aren't any real surprises here though, as we already knew the CUDA core count and the memory size, courtesy of the RTX 4070 Ti having been the RTX 4080 12 GB, until NVIDIA changed its mind. It's interesting to see that NVIDIA compares the RTX 4070 Ti to the RTX 3080 12 GB in the three official benchmarks, as it makes the RTX 4070 Ti look a lot better than it is in reality, at least based on the rumoured MSRP of US$800-900. One of the three benchmarks is Cyberpunk 2077 using Raytracingl, where NVIDIA suggests the RTX 4070 Ti is around 3.5 times faster than the RTX 3080, but it's worth reading the fine print. We'll know next week how the RTX 4070 Ti actually performs, as well as where the official pricing and actual retail pricing ends up.

2-slot Air-Cooled GeForce RTX 4090 with Lateral Blower Shows Up in China
A Chinese graphics card manufacturer unveiled what is likely the only 2-slot, air-cooled GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card in existence. Most gaming-segment RTX 4090 graphics cards tend to be 3-4 slots thick, and the only 2-slot ones are liquid-cooled ones. This is due to the 450 W stock typical graphics power rating of the RTX 4090, which can go as high as 600 W for certain custom-design cards. This product is aimed at the niche that wants a bunch of RTX 4090 cards in a space-constrained workstation chassis.

The card appears to be around 30-32 cm in length, and its height is strictly what constitutes "full-height" (11.5 cm). The cooler is in fact 1-2 mm thinner than what constitutes 2-slot; and probably uses a vapor-chamber plate welded to a stack of aluminium or copper channels that dissipate heat to airflow from a lateral-blower. The heatsink may look underpowered for a GPU like the RTX 4090, but probably over-relies on the blower operating at a very high RPM at all times—same principal as server cooling, where an array of 40 mm fans at nearly max-RPM push air through thin channel-type heatsinks cooling large 250 W TDP server processors. The card lacks a backplate to make it easier for the adjacent card to breathe in air. Power is drawn from a 16-pin ATX 12VHPWR connector located at the tail-end of the card, rather than on its top. The card reportedly has its power limits locked to 450 W (probably through power-connector signal keying). The card was briefly available on Alibaba-owned peer-to-peer trading platform Goofish, where it was priced at RMB ¥15,000 (about USD $2,150).

Top 10 TSMC Customers Said to have Cut Orders for 2023
On the day of TSMC's celebration of the mass production start of its 3 nm node, news out of Taiwan suggests that all of its top 10 customers have cut their orders for 2023. However, the cuts are unlikely to affect its new node, but rather its existing nodes, with the 7 and 6 nm nodes said to be hit the hardest, by as much as a 50 percent utilisation reduction in the first quarter of 2023. The 28 nm and 5 and 4 nm nodes are also said to be affected, although it's unclear by how much at this point in time.

Revenue is expected to fall by at least 15 percent in the first quarter of 2023 for TSMC, based on numbers from DigiTimes. The fact that TSMC has increased its 2023 pricing by six percent should at least help offset some of the potential losses for the company, but it all depends on the demand for the rest of the year. Demand for mobile devices is down globally, which is part of the reason why so many of TSMC's customers have cut back their orders, as Apple, Qualcomm and Mediatek all produce their mobile SoCs at TSMC. Add to this that the demand for computers and new computer components are also down, largely due to the current pricing and TSMC is in for a tough time next year.

AMD Said to be Following NVIDIA with Logistics Center in Taiwan
Just over a month ago, news broke that NVIDIA is planning to move its logistics center from Hong Kong to Taiwan and it now looks like AMD is getting ready to follow suit. The news is coming via Taiwan's United Daily News (UDN) and the paper claims that AMD will be setting up its logistics center in the Farglory free trade zone area in the Dayuan district of Taoyuan, which is next to Taiwan's main international airport. Currently companies like ASML and Asus operate inside the free trade zone and Farglory is currently in the last phase of an expansion of the free trade zone, which should be finalised sometime early in 2023. As such, there should be plenty of space for both NVIDIA and AMD to set up their logistics centers there.

The move for AMD doesn't seem to make as much sense as that of NVIDIA, as AMD's main graphics card partners, which should be Sapphire and XFX (Pine Group), are Hong Kong based companies. That said, AMD still has PowerColor, ASRock, Asus, Gigabyte and MSI in Taiwan, but only PowerColor is an exclusive AMD partner. This does of course not take motherboards or servers into account, where its Taiwanese partners are key. On the other hand, just as NVIDIA, AMD produces its GPUs at TSMC, so for products that doesn't end up in the PRC, it would make more sense to have them go straight to a logistics center in Taiwan, rather than having to ship them out to Hong Kong and then back to Taiwan again. According to UDN it's apparently also cheaper for AMD to shop goods directly from Taiwan to the PRC, as it's apparently quite costly to ship via Hong Kong. Another reason is of course the ongoing trade war between the US and the PRC, which could lead to future issues for both AMD and NVIDIA. Hong Kong has also slowly lost its importance as a key center in the electronics business, with Taiwan and Singapore having become more important hubs, according to UDN.

(PR) Shipments of Monitor Panels Are Projected to Show YoY Decline of 8.8% for 2022, Says TrendForce
Shipments of monitor panels have fallen over the quarters this year due to various factors that have caused disruptions across the global economy and politics. TrendForce projects that shipments of monitor panels will total just around 158 million pieces for 2022, showing a YoY decline of 8.8%.

According to TrendForce's research on the market for display panels, monitor panels experienced a large downward shipment correction later than did TV and NB panels. For TV panels, the correction phase began in 3Q21. Turning to NB panels, a steep decline in shipments occurred in 2Q22. As for monitor panels, their shipments had not fallen significantly until 3Q22. With the correction taking place at a later time, the eventual rebound will also occur at a more distant time in the future. Since monitor brands are still holding an excessively high level of panel inventory at this moment, shipments of monitor panels are forecasted to drop again by 5.3% QoQ for 1Q23.

(PR) EK Launches a 4-in-1 AM5 Socket Delicacy for the SFF Community
EK, the premium liquid cooling gear manufacturer, is releasing yet another unique pump-reservoir-water block combo. This time for AMD AM5 Socket, Ryzen 7000-series CPUs, and AM5 socket-based motherboards. It features the latest socket-specific EK-Quantum Velocity² cooling engine, while the CPU water block has an integrated DDC 4.2 PWM pump that is cooled by the metal part of the water block acting as a heatsink. The combo is the perfect companion for ITX (SFF) builds where space for a dedicated pump and reservoir is an issue. This product effectively combines four different products into a single small enclosure for ultimate space-saving.

The product combines a Velocity² CPU water block, a genuine DDC 4.2 PWM pump with a reservoir, and a DDC heatsink. All this is contained in an assembly significantly smaller than the sum of its parts. A total of four products in a footprint of a hefty CPU water block that fits perfectly. EK-Quantum Velocity² series CPU water blocks embed the next-generation cooling engine. They use a specific combination of mounting pressure and coldplate geometry tailored for the IHS and chiplet layout of AMD AM5 socket processors. Low hydraulic flow restriction enables these products to be used in setups with weaker water pumps or lower pump speeds for added silent operation while still being able to easily achieve top performance. The lathe-turned coldplate is made with precision to cover the IHS effectively and put pressure on the die area.

(PR) SK hynix to Showcase Energy-Efficient, High-Performance Memory Products at CES 2023
SK hynix Inc. announced today that it will showcase a number of its core and brand-new products at the CES 2023, the most influential tech event in the world taking place in Las Vegas from Jan. 5th through Jan. 8th. The products, introduced under the theme of the "Green Digital Solution," as part of the SK Group's "Carbon-Free Future" campaign, are expected to attract Big Tech customers and experts given the significant improvement in performance and energy efficiency compared with the previous generation as well as the effect of lessening the impact on the environment.

Attention on energy-efficient memory chips has been on the rise as global tech companies pursue products that process data faster, while consuming less energy. SK hynix is confident that its products to be displayed at the CES 2023 will meet customers' such needs with outstanding performance per watt and performance. The core product put forward at the show is PS1010 E3.S, an eSSD product composed of multiple 176-layer 4D NAND that supports the fifth generation of the PCIe interface.

(PR) YoY Growth of NAND Flash Demand Bits Will Stay Under 30% from 202
Client SSDs constituted a major driver of demand bit growth in the NAND Flash market for the past two years as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were spurring procurement activities related to working and studying from home.
