ASRock is Expected to Launch Multiple Gaming Monitors
Several new ASRock products have passed through the KCC, which is the Korean equivalent of the FCC and normally this would be a new motherboard or maybe some small form factor system, but surprisingly enough, we're looking at gaming monitors. The leak comes courtesy of @momomo_us who's dug up a lot of juicy details on two of the models, whereas we only know the basic specs for the other models. First up, we have the PG34WQ15R, which is a 34-inch curved VA display with a 3440x1440 resolution. It supports FreeSync Premium and has a refresh rate range of 48 to 165 Hz over DisplayPort and 48-100 Hz over HDMI, which seems to be an HDMI 1.4 limitation. The next model is the PG27FF, which is a regular 1080p IPS display that also supports FreeSync Premium, here with a refresh rate range of 48 to 165 Hz over both DP and HDMI. There appears to be multiple sub SKUs of this model, but all start with PG27F.

Then we have the PG32QF, which should be a flat 32-inch display, with unknown specs, but the Q in the model name suggests that it's a 1440p monitor. Finally we have the PG42U, where the U in the model name suggests it's a 4K 42-inch display. The stand looks nearly identical to the one ASUS uses for its ROG Strix XG43UQ 4K screen and the specs are likely to be quite similar too, which means we might see support for 144 Hz or higher refresh rates. All four displays are manufactured by TPV Technology, which produces its own monitors under the AOC, Envision and Philips brands. It's unknown when these new monitors from ASRock will launch, but considering they've passed through certification, it's highly likely that they'll turn up sometime later this year.

SilverStone Launches M.2 Riser Card for Two SSDs
For those with older systems, or for those just in need of additional M.2 slots in their system, SilverStone has launched the SST-ECM28 riser card. The SST-ECM28 is a low-profile solution that can house one M-key NVMe drive and one B-key SATA drive, as it allows a drive to be mounted on each side of the riser card. The SATA drive requires a SATA cable to be connected to the rear of the riser card and then to a SATA slot on the motherboard to function.

This isn't the first time we've seen a product that can handle two drives, but it's the first time we've seen one that is as compact as this. The downside is that there's no retention bracket and it appears that the only way to hold the SST-ECM28 is by fitting it into a physical x16 slot that has a locking mechanism for graphics cards, as the PCB has a retention hook, just as you get on most x16 cards. The SST-ECM28 uses a standard x4 PCIe interface, so it will fit in x4 slots as well, with the risk of it popping out of the slot if the system is moved around. Drives of all sizes from 2230 up to 2280 are supported for both SATA and NVMe drives.

Intel Raptor Lake Launch and Availability Dates Revealed
A post on Chinese forum Bilibili has revealed more exact details with regards to when Intel's Raptor Lake series of processors will launch and if nothing changes between now and then, the K and KF SKU's should be announced as previously thought, at the Intel Innovation '22 event that kicks off on the 27th of September. Retail availability, alongside Z790 motherboards should be about a month later, starting the week of the 17th of October. We've confirmed these dates with our own sources, but as always with early information, these things can change.

The rest of the Raptor Lake family of CPUs, as well as the H770 and B760 chipsets are expected to launch at CES 2023 in January and the poster on Bilibili claims that retail sales should be sometime in the second half of January. We've not been able to confirm the latter information here. As per older rumours, Intel is expected to change the PCIe lane allocation for the Z790 chipset compared to Z690 and based on the information posted, Z790 will have 20 PCIe 4.0 and eight PCIe 3.0 lanes, vs. 12 PCIe 4.0 and 16 PCIe 3.0 for the Z690 chipset. Raptor Lake is also said to get native support for faster DDR5 5600 memory, rather than just 4800 MHz DDR5 for Alder Lake. There are apparently no changes to the CPU PCIe lanes and DDR4 support is still here, but once again, no changes have been made to the DDR4 memory controller.

Intel Core i7-13700K Raptor Lake-S CPU Runs Geekbench
With Intel Raptor Lake-S desktop processors around the corner, we see an ever-increasing number of entries to the popular synthetic benchmark databases. Yesterday we had an Intel Core i5-3600K CPU, while today, we are presented with Core i7-13700K SKU. The new 13th generation Core i7-13700K CPU features eight P-cores and eight E-cores. Compared to the 12th generation Core i7-12700K, this is a step up with eight P-cores and four E-cores. According to Geekbench 5 benchmark, the new Qualification Sample (QS) of Core i7-13700K CPU was running at the minimum clock of 5.289 GHz, maximum clock of 5.381 GHz, and average speed of 5.36 GHz. It was tested on the same configuration as yesterday's i5 SKU with ASRock Z690 Steel Legend WiFi 6E motherboard with 32 GB of DDR4 memory.

As far as the results are concerned, the 13th gen i7-13700K SKU scored 2090 points in the single-core test, while the multi-core score totaled 16542 points. If we compare this to the 12th gen i7-12700K CPU that it replaces, the new model leads by about 10% and 17% in single-core and multi-core tests, respectively.

Intel Xeon W9-3495 Sapphire Rapids HEDT CPU with 56 Cores and 112 Threads Appears
Intel's upcoming Sapphire Rapids processors will not only be present in the server sector but will also span the high-end desktop (HEDT) platform. Today, according to the findings of a Twitter user, @InstLatX64, we have an appearance of Intel's upcoming Sapphire Rapids HEDT SKU in Kernel.org boot logs. Named Intel Xeon W9-3495, this model features 56 cores and 112 threads. While there is no specific information about base and boost frequencies, we know that the SKU supports AVX-512 and AMX instructions. This is a welcome addition, as we have seen Intel disable AVX-512 on consumer chips altogether.

With a high core count and additional instructions for Deep Learning, this CPU will power workstations sometimes in the future. With the late arrival of Sapphire Rapids for servers, a HEDT variant should follow.

Unofficial NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060M Performs Within an Inch of the RTX 3060
Remember those unofficial GeForce RTX 3060 cards that sported "hackamajigged" Mobile versions of the NVIDIA RTX 3060 desktop GPU wrapped in a shiny, desktop-like shroud? Well, those cards are now surfacing again just as Ethereum's Merge approaches (for the umpteenth time, it has to be said). Miners have taken to offload their graphics cards in order to recoup their hardware investment costs. Despite the recent positive price action, which saw Ethereum in particular recovering 34% of its value in about a week, there's only so much time left to mine before all those re-purposed GPUs become "nothing more" than gaming graphics cards. And those are usually superfluous beyond one per rig - never mind the numbers used by miners.

As these cards are now surfacing in the secondary markets, some benchmarks are also leaking. According to a Korean YouTuber, It appears that the RTX 3060M is actually a pretty competent RTX 3060. The GeForce RTX 3060M makes use of the same GA106 (Ampere) silicon as the GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile, sporting 3,840 CUDA cores and 6 GB of 14 Gbps GDDR6 memory (256 more CUDA cores than the desktop version, as wider, lesser-clocked GPUs sport better power efficiency profiles). The desktop shroud does allow it to unlock an additional 300 MHz in core frequency, while reducing its TDP from 105 W down to just 80 W.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Sample Pictured in the Flesh
Someone with access to an AMD Ryzen 7 7700X "Zen 4" processor posted one of the first pictures of an AMD Ryzen 7 7700X "Zen 4" desktop processor installed on a motherboard. The picture shows the 7700X seated in the Socket AM5. The retention brace of the socket only clutches against two side protrusions of the IHS. AMD explained in its recent interview with us that the odd shape of the IHS is to accommodate the various electrical SMDs outside the IHS for better thermal management. With the processor installed, we can see that they're exposed and not covered up by the retention brace. The IHS is taller than the brace, so there will be some passive ventilation for the SMDs. Installing a Ryzen 7000 processor on Socket AM5 involves familiar steps to installing Intel mainstream-desktop processors for the past 15 years. This particular processor has the "D" marking on the IHS, which denotes a non-retail sample (possibly a review sample).

AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Retailer Pricing 10% to 13% Higher Than Ryzen 5000
PC Canada has drawn first blood in registering pricing for AMD's upcoming Ryzen 7000 series, the successor to the successful 5000 series. As spotted by renowned leaker momomo_us and shared on Twitter, the specialist retailer based in Canada listed pricing for the Ryzen 7 7600X, 7700X, 7900X and 7950X CPUs. The pricing, if representative, shows an average increase that averages to 10%-12% across SKUs when compared to the previous generation Ryzen. The prices could be placeholders based on the retailers' own expectations, so this information should be taken with a grain of salt (or two).

After conversion from CAD to US dollars, pricing settles at $340 for the Ryzen 7 7600X ($299 for the 5600X at launch, for a 13% premium); $494 for the Ryzen 7 7700X (against the later-released, $299 Ryzen 7 5700X for a 65% premium); $625 for the Ryzen 9 7900X ($549 for the launch Ryzen 9 5900X, for a 13% increase) and finally, the Ryzen 9 7950X for $906 (against the Ryzen 9 5950X's $799 asking price, for another 13% premium).

TSMC has Seven Major Customers Lined Up for its 3 nm Node
Based on media reports out of Taiwan, TSMC seems to have plenty of customers lined up for its 3 nm node, with Apple being the first customer out the gates when production starts sometime next month. However, TSMC is only expected to start the production with a mere 1,000 wafer starts a month, which seems like a very low figure, especially as this is said to remain unchanged through all of Q4. On the plus side, yields are expected to be better than the initial 5 nm node yields. Full-on mass production for the 3 nm node isn't expected to happen until the second half of 2023 and TSMC will also kick off its N3E node sometime in 2023.

Apart from Apple, major customers for the 3 nm node include AMD, Broadcom, Intel, MediaTek, NVIDIA and Qualcomm. Contrary to earlier reports by TrendForce, it appears that TSMC will continue its rollout of the 3 nm node as previously planned. Apple is expected to produce the A17 smartphone and tablet SoC, as well as advanced versions of the M2, as well as the M3 laptop and desktop processors on the 3 nm node. Intel is still said to be producing its graphics chiplets with TSMC, with the potential for GPU and FPGA products in the future. There's no word on what the other customers are planning to produce on the 3 nm node, but MediaTek and Qualcomm are obviously looking at using the node for future smartphone and tablet SoCs, with AMD and NVIDIA most likely aiming for upcoming GPUs and Broadcom for some kind of HPC related hardware.

ASUS Recalls ROG Maximus Z690 Hero Motherboards Due to Fire and Burn Hazard
Under the directions of the US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), the regulatory body overseeing consumer-safety for the US and Canada, ASUS has instituted a general recall of its Republic of Gamers (ROG) Maximus Z690 Hero Socket LGA1700 motherboard. This includes pulling the product from the market, as well as reaching out to current owners, informing them of a design flaw with the product that affects their safety, and offering replacements.

The general recall has its roots in a December 2021 announcement by ASUS that a batch of the motherboard is being voluntarily recalled by the company after it discovered that a capacitor that's part of the motherboard's VRM has been defectively installed in the opposite electrical polarity. This has the potential to cause a fire.

Qualcomm Wants Server Market to Run its New Processors, a Re-Launch Could Happen
Qualcomm is a company well known for designing processors going inside a vast majority of smartphones. However, the San Diego company has been making attempts to break out of its vision to focus on smartphones and establish new markets where it could show its potential for efficient processor design. According to Bloomberg's insights, Qualcomm is planning to re-enter the server market and try again to compete in the now very diverse space. In 2014, Qualcomm announced that the company is developing an Arm ISA-based CPU that will target servers and be an excellent alternative for cloud service providers looking at efficient designs called Centriq. Later on, in November of 2017, the company announced the first CPU Centriq 2400, which had 48 custom Falkor cores, six-channel DDR4 memory, and 60 MB of L3 cache.

What happened later is that the changing management of the company slowly abandoned the project, and the Arm CPU market was a bit of a dead-end for many projects. However, in recent years, many companies began designing Arm processors, and now the market is ready for a player like Qualcomm to re-enter this space. With the acquisition of Nuvia Inc., which developed crazy fast CPU IPs under the leadership of industry veterans, these designs could soon see the light of the day. It is reported that Qualcomm is in talks with Amazon's AWS cloud division, which has agreed to take a look at Qualcomm's offerings.

Alienware Announces 24.5-Inch 1080p 360 Hz and 27-Inch 1440p 280 Hz Monitors
Dell has launched a pair of new gaming focused displays under its Alienware badge and both are high refresh rate monitors. The 25-inch (or rather 24.5-inch) model goes under the model name AW2523HF and has a 1080p panel with a 360 Hz refresh rate. It supports Freesync Premium and it also supports VESA AdaptiveSync. It's said to have a 400 nits peak brightness fast IPS panel that has a colour gamut that covers 99 percent of the sRGB spectrum. Inputs consist of one DP 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 ports, as well as a USB-B 3.0 input and four USB-A 3.0 outputs

The 27-inch model is called the AW2723DF and it sports 1440p resolution and here we're looking at a fast nano IPS panel that has a native 240 Hz refresh rate, but it can be pushed up to 280 Hz using an overclocking option. It supports FreeSync Premium, G-sync Compatible and AdaptiveSync, so here all your bases are covered regardless of which GPU you hook it up to. It's also an HDR 600 display with a typical peak brightness of 450 cd/m² and it has a wider colour gamut that supports 95 percent of the DCI-P3 spectrum. This is still an edge lit display, so don't expect amazing HDR performance. Connectivity is the same as for the AW2523HF, although it's said to support Picture-by-Picture and Picture-in-Picture, which the 25-inch model apparently doesn't. The AW2523HF will be available in early September for $450, while the AW2723DF will launch in early October for $650.

(PR) CHERRY MX Keys Power CORSAIR Voyager a1600 AMD Advantage Edition
CHERRY MX, the market leader and expert for mechanical switches in keyboards, is the first choice for keyswitch technology for CORSAIR's laptop debut: the leading manufacturer of high-performance PC components and peripherals is shipping its brand-new high-end CORSAIR a1600 AMD Advantage Edition series laptops with the MX Ultra Low Profile Tactile switches. With this, the US company relies on mechanical precision made in Germany to meet the high demands of gamers, content creators, and other power users.

The CORSAIR Voyager a1600 is equipped with cutting-edge technology. Still, it remains surprisingly thin: Despite a height of only 19.8 millimeters, the mobile PC is equipped with the top processor AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS or Ryzen 7 6800HS, and the dedicated graphics solution Radeon RX 6800M. Together with 16 gigabytes of DDR5 memory from CORSAIR's Vengeance series, it is ensured that games run smoothly at maximum graphic details, and resource-intensive applications such as graphics or video editing software can be operated responsively. To adequately cool the high-performance components, CORSAIR relies on an advanced vapor-chamber cooling system that distributes heat evenly, keeping temperatures low even in this slim format.

(PR) Apricorn Launches 2 TB Aegis Secure Key 3 with FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Hardware Encryption
Apricorn, the leading manufacturer of software-free, 256-bit AES XTS hardware-encrypted USB drives, today announced the release of the USB 3.2 Gen 1 Aegis Secure Key 3 2 TB encrypted flash key. Designed for organizations that need large amounts of encrypted storage with a minimal footprint, the new 2 TB Aegis Secure Key 3 is the industry's first hardware-encrypted flash key of this size, marking a time-honored tradition of innovation from Apricorn. Currently, the Aegis Secure Key 3 has eight capacity options ranging from 16 GB to 2 TB, pricing from $129.00 - $999.00 U.S.

The Aegis Secure Key 3, originally introduced in 2015, was the first Apricorn device to feature AegisWare, Apricorn's patent-protected firmware that first introduced Forced Enrollment, Programmable PIN lengths, Unattended Auto Lock and Lock Override. At 256 GB, this original version was already double the storage capacity of any encrypted flash key on the market. Fifteen months later, that maximum size doubled to 480 GB, and again doubled to 1 TB in November of 2018. Seven years after its initial launch, the Aegis Secure Key 3 has been adopted in myriad government, military, and corporate environments and remains Apricorn's fastest, most rugged flash key in the line.

Intel Arc A580 Hits AotS Benchmark Database, Roughly Matches RTX 3050
Intel Arc A580 is an upcoming entry-mainstream desktop graphics card based on the Xe-HPG "Alchemist" graphics architecture, and positioned between the A380 and A750. Based on the larger 6 nm DG2-512 silicon than the one powering the A380, the A580 is endowed with 16 Xe Cores, or double the SIMD muscle of the A380, with 2,048 unified shaders. The card enjoys 8 GB of GDDR6 memory across a 128-bit bus, which at 16 Gbps data-rate produces 256 GB/s bandwidth.

A leaked Ashes of the Singularity benchmark database entry reveals that the A580 scores roughly 95 FPS at 1080p on average, with 110 FPS in the normal batch, around 102 FPS in the medium batch, and around 78 FPS in the heavy batch. The benchmark used the Vulkan API, and an unknown 16-thread Intel processor with 32 GB of memory. These scores put the A580 roughly at par with the GeForce RTX 3050 "Ampere" in this test, which would make it a reasonable solution for playing popular online games at 1080p with medium-high settings, or AAA games at medium settings.

(PR) Alphacool Presents Eiswolf 2 and Eisblock for GPU Cooling
Alphacool today releases a new Eiswolf 2 all-in-one water cooler as well as two other Eisblock water coolers for MSI and EVGA graphics cards. The Eiswolf 2 uses the 360 mm NexXxoS ST30 all-copper radiator. The Aurora Rise fan in the 120 mm version is included. The AIO is completed by the Eisblock Aurora water cooler, which in addition to the GPU chip actively cools all relevant components such as graphics memory and voltage converters and has brilliant aRGB lighting. The combination of all components results in a solution that is as easy to install as an AIO, but offers the performance of a pre-assembled and pre-filled custom loop.

The Eisblock is where performance meets brilliant design! Fully illuminated with aRGB LEDs, the full cover copper cooler with acrylic top and edge design not only looks great, but also impresses with its exceptional cooling performance.

Corsair Teases the Performance of its Upcoming MP700 PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD
Corsair decided it was time to start teasing its upcoming MP700 PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD, although the company didn't bother providing any images of the drive itself, or any specifications in the teaser. However, Corsair did provide some sequential performance figures, which end up being impressive and disappointing at the same time. The MP700 is said to offer sequential read speeds of up to 10 GB/s or 10,000 MB/s if you prefer and sequential write speeds of 9.5 GB/s. These are obviously very fast speeds, but quite far from what the PCIe 5.0 can deliver and the performance figures are only a bit faster than the best PCIe 4.0 drives. It's likely that we'll see better performance from second generation controllers, just as we did with PCIe 4.0 SSDs, as this gives both the SSD controller makers and the SSD makers a chance to refresh their products a year or two down the line.

These socket-specific water blocks are engineered specifically for the upcoming AMD AM5 socket and Ryzen 7000-series CPUs. Like its AM4 predecessor, the AM5 water block features EK-Matrix7 compatibility, which means it's designed according to the standard where the product's height and port distance are managed in 7 mm increments.

The product deploys a modified Velocity² cooling engine optimized for Ryzen 7000-series CPUs to ensure the best cooling performance and optimal coolant flow. While the mounting hole pattern of the new AM5 socket is still 54 x 90 mm, the AM5 motherboards now have an integrated CPU socket backplate with #UNC 6-32 threads, therefore requiring a new mounting system.

(PR) ASUS Republic of Gamers Announces ROG Loki Availability
ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced the availability of the ROG Loki—the high-performance, high-wattage PSU series in a striking SFX-L form. Packed with large ROG heatsinks for rapid cooling, integrated ARGB lighting to project personal style and axial-tech fans for whisper-quiet operation, the Loki series is pumped and primed to power small-form-factor (SFF) builds.

Large showcase rigs will always be the lifeblood of the PC-building community, but SFF builds have become increasingly popular in recent years. It's easy to see why: for those that want a build that can comfortably fit on a smaller desk, or in an entertainment center for TV gaming, a Mini-ITX machine is the perfect choice. But cramming next-gen power into a tiny case can be a challenge, especially with the added heat those components can produce. ROG's new Loki power supplies were designed to keep efficiency up and footprint down, empowering avid PC DIYers to build no-compromise, console-crushing clones.

Latest Ryzen 9 7950X CPU-Z Bench MultiThreaded Score Puts it 8% Behind i9-13900K, 33% Ahead of i9-12900K
A screenshot of an alleged AMD Ryzen 9 7950X "Zen 4" processor surfaced on the web, courtesy of OneRaichu, and this time there's no blur-out with the score field—15645 points. When compared to the alleged CPU-Z Bench scores of the Core i9-13900K "Raptor Lake" from last week, the Intel 8P+16E hybrid processor ends up 7.9% faster than this score, but still a very close second.

The Ryzen 9 7950X ends up a significant 23.47% faster than the leaked score of the Core i7-13700K (8P+8E), and the AMD flagship scores 33.5% faster than the previous-gen Intel flagship Core i9-12900K. While both the i7-13700K and i9-12900K are 8P+8E, the "Raptor Lake" gets ahead with higher IPC for the P-cores, slightly higher clocks, and more cache for the E-core clusters. The 7950X is also 32.12% faster than its predecessor, the Ryzen 9 5950X "Zen 3," and a whopping 58.39% faster than the Core i7-12700K (8P+4E).

ATX 3.0 PSU Specification Loophole Lets Manufacturers Evade Stringent Excursion Tolerance Testing by Simply Excluding the 12+4 pin Connector
When testing recent high-end GPU launches such as the AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT graphics card, we observed some system reboots that caused due to power-draw spikes (technically known as "excursions"). This is when a graphics card, for a brief moment, draws more power than the connector is capable of supplying, triggering the PSU's electrical protections, and causing a reboot. The new ATX 3.0 specification for the next-generation of desktop PC power supplies enable PSUs with a high tolerance for excursions, and prescribes testing standards to ensure a PSU meets the ATX 3.0 spec. Aris Mpitziopoulos (crmaris) and Jon Gerow (Jonnyguru) discovered wording in the latest Intel ATX 3.0 specification that could make you pay closer attention to reviews of ATX 3.0-spec PSU, when they're out.

In a Hardware Busters article, Mpitziopoulos clears the confusion that the ATX 3.0 power supply specs by Intel and the PCI-Express 5.0 power specification by the PCI-SIG, are mutually-inclusive—they're not. An ATX 3.0 PSU is not required to include a 12+4 pin (or 16-pin) ATX 12VHPWR connector, whether or not their nameplate Wattage is above 450 W, which means it's subjected to passing less stressful transient-response tests, particularly the ability to deal with a 200% excursion for at least 100 ms.

NFT Craze Hits the Brakes as OpenSea Records 99% Volume Decline in 90 days
OpenSea, one of the most widely recognized NFT markets in the cryptocurrency world, has slammed into a wall of absence. Namely, the absence of volume: the decentralized marketplace has seen a 99% drop on NFT trading volume in merely 90 days. From its high of $405.75 million on May 1, transactions on Non- Fungible Tokens have petered out to just $5 million throughout the entire month of August.

Reduced volume connects to reduced demand, which has in turn led to reducing floor prices (the lowest available price for a given NFT) for even the most recognized collections: the cheapest Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT can now be had for 72.5 ETH ($104,634 at time of writing). That's a 53% reduction in its ETH price (153.7 ETH) from May 1st. But the drop is even more massive when one takes into account the devaluation of Ethereum itself: On May 1st, the 153.7 ETH asking price for the NFT equaled $434,048 (price has thus tumbled by 76% on a dollar basis). CryptoPunks, another popular Ethereum-based NFT collection, has seen its floor price decline by a less drastic 20%.

Possible AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Launch SEP Prices Leaked
Possible launch SEP pricing of AMD's Ryzen 7000 series "Zen 4" desktop processors leaked to the web by Wccftech, which appear to be similar to those of the Ryzen 5000 "Zen 3" at launch. AMD will launch a slim set of four SKUs in its first round of these processors—the flagship Ryzen 9 7950X (16-core/32-thread), followed by the second-best Ryzen 9 7900X (12-core/24-thread), the Ryzen 7 7700X (8-core/16-thread), and the mid-range Ryzen 5 7600X (6-core/12-thread).

Apparently, the series debuts with the Ryzen 5 7600X at $299, or the same SEP of the Ryzen 5 5600X at launch. The Ryzen 7 7700X launches at $449. The Ryzen 9 7900X comes in at $549, and the flagship Ryzen 9 7950X at $799, which again, is identical to that of the 5950X. Besides processors, motherboard vendors are expected to launch their first Socket AM5 motherboards, debuting with the AMD X670E and X670 chipsets. There's talk of mid-range chipsets such as the B650 and B650E, but we haven't seen any confirmed products show up on motherboard vendors' websites, yet. Pre-launch pricing for the X670E and X670 put them at a significant premium over the current Socket AM4 flagship boards based on the X570. Besides processors and motherboards, we could see announcements from memory vendors launching their first DDR5 memory products to feature AMD EXPO technology.

Intel Arc A380 Gains Ethereum Mining Support Reaching 10.2 MH/s
The Intel Arc A380 has recently been tested for crypto mining performance after support for the card was added in the latest release of Nanominer. The card achieved a hash rate of 10.2 MH/s while mining Ethereum Classic (ETC) without any optimizations at a TDP of 75 W equating to 0.136 MH/s per Watt which is significantly below other popular mining cards which can reach 0.38 MH/s per Watt. This limited performance can be partially attributed to the availability of only 8 Xe-Cores and the relatively small 96-bit memory bus. The card will struggle to mine Ethereum due to its limited 6 GB of VRAM while Ethereum Classic should work fine as demonstrated.

Possible GeForce RTX 4070 "Ada" Specs Hit the Rumor Mill
Two sets of possible specifications of the upcoming performance-segment NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 "Ada" graphics card has hit the rumor-mill, according to kopite7kimi, a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks. The first set of specs sees the card feature 12 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory (possibly over a 192-bit wide memory bus), as many as 7,680 CUDA cores, a typical board power of 285 W, and an internal SKU code of "PG141-SKU340/341." It makes sense for 12 GB of memory across a 192-bit memory bus to be a logical choice for NVIDIA (as opposed to the previous-gen RTX 3070 with its 8 GB of 14 Gbps GDDR6 across 256-bit); as it allows the company to achieve a 50% memory size increase gen-over-gen, while reducing the number of memory chips on the card from 8 to 6 (by using six 16 Gbit GDDR6X chips).

The second set of specs doing rounds is the "PG141-SKU336/337," consisting of 7,168 CUDA cores, 10 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory across what we're assuming could be a 160-bit wide memory bus (five memory chips), and 250 W typical board power. The same source also claims that the SKU340/341 could have a performance target of over 11000 points in Time Spy Extreme, while the SKU336/337 could be designed with at least 10000 points in mind. It's quite possible that the second configuration is that of the RTX 3060 Ti-successor SKU. Given NVIDIA's top-down approach to product launches, we could expect performance-segment SKUs only toward the end of 2022, or early-2023.

AMD B650E "Extreme" Chipset Confirmed, Brings PCIe 5.0 for GPU and SSD
AMD's upcoming launch of Ryzen 7000 series processors will bring an entirely new AM5 platform that will enable newer technologies and protocols. We have DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 connection with everything at level five. However, the upcoming chipsets AMD has designed to work alongside the new processors will be available in several variants. There will be regular X670 and B650 versions that support either a PCIe 5.0 GPU or a PCIe 5.0 M.2 NVIMe SSD. Today, we got a confirmation that not only the big X670 chipset has an "E" or "Extreme" version, but its smaller brother B650 as well. With X670E and B650E, users get both PCIe 5.0 connectivity for their GPU and M.2 NVIMe SSD. For more information, we have to wait for AMD's official launch information later today.

Intel 700-series Chipset Motherboards Feature Higher Memory OC Headroo
Intel 700-series chipset motherboards could come with improved memory overclocking capabilities, suggest an alleged leaked specs-sheet of an MSI Intel Z790 chipset motherboard. As the pioneering platform for DDR5, Intel 600-series chipset motherboards, particularly those based on the Z690, typically marketed DDR5 memory overclock speeds of around DDR5-6000 or DDR5-6200 in their specs sheets, as the then-expensive DDR5 memory kits started at JEDEC-spec speeds of DDR5-4800 in the entry-level, with performance-segment kits around the DDR5-6000 mark.

The unnamed MSI Z790 chipset motherboard supports DDR5 overclocked frequencies of over DDR5-6800 at 1DPC (one DIMM per channel) with single-rank modules; over DDR5-6400 with 1DPC + dual-rank modules; over DDR5-6400 with 2DPC + single-rank modules; and over DDR5-5600 with 2DPC + dual-rank. Earlier reports suggested that Intel is "discouraging" motherboard vendors from coming up with 700-series motherboards that feature DDR4 memory slots, but this doesn't mean there won't be any. MSI has an Intel Z790 motherboard with DDR4 slots in the works, and it's capable of overclocks of up to DDR4-5000 in the most optimal configuration, and DDR4-4000 in the least optimal one.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Fmax Frequency Set at 5.85 GHz
Fmax (or Frequency max), is the maximum clock speed an AMD "Zen" processor will automatically boost/overclock to, at stock multiplier settings. To go beyond this, you'll have to increase the multiplier value, and overclock the traditional way. The Fmax value for AMD's upcoming flagship desktop processor, the Ryzen 9 7950X "Zen 4," is reportedly set at 5.85 GHz. To facilitate this, you'll have to enable settings such as Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO), to eke out the power limits needed to get here. Competing Intel parts, such as the "Raptor Lake" Core i9-13900K, is reported to have a similar maximum boost frequency, of 5.80 GHz, but that's just for its 8 P-cores.

Intel Posts XeSS Technology Deep-Dive Video
Intel Graphics today posted a technological deep-dive video presentation into how XeSS (Xe Super Sampling), the company's rival to NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR, works. XeSS is a gaming performance enhancement technology where your game is rendered by the GPU at a lower resolution than what your display is capable of; while a high-quality upscaling algorithm scales it up to your native resolution while minimizing quality losses associated with classical upscaling methods.

The video details mostly what we gathered from our older articles on how XeSS works. A game's raster and lighting is rendered at a lower-resolution, frame-data along with motion vectors are fed to the XeSS upscaling algorithm, and is then passed on to the renderer's post-processing and the native-resolution HUD is applied. The XeSS upscaler takes not just motion vector and the all important frame inputs, but also temporal data from processed (upscaled) frames, so a pre-trained AI could better reconstruct details.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Allegedly 40% Faster than 5950X in CPU-Z Bench Multi-Threaded
The upcoming AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-core/32-thread processor is allegedly over 40% faster than its predecessor, the 5950X, at the CPU-Z Bench multi-threaded test, according to a leaked benchmark screenshot scored by harukaze5719, and tabulated by Wccftech. The 7950X is shown with a score of 16809 points, which puts it 41 percent faster than the 5950X, and 43% faster than the i9-12900K. It's also shown to be behind the leaked benchmarks of the i9-13900K by a whisker—with the upcoming Intel chip being 0.5% faster.

Boost Frequencies of the All-important Core i5-13400 and i5-13500 Revealed
When it releases, the Core i5-13400 will join a long like of Intel processors that are extremely successful in the market—chips that are priced around the $200-mark, and bang in the middle of the market bell-curve. Other chips in the lineup include the i5-12400, i5-11400, i5-10400, and the i5-9400. With the 13th Generation "Raptor Lake," Intel is configuring the i5-13400, i5-13500, and the i5-13600 (non-K) as 6P+4E processors (that's 6 "Raptor Cove" P-cores with 4 "Gracemont" E-cores); whereas their 12th Gen predecessors only had 6 "Golden Cove" P-cores, and no E-cores. The top Core i5 part, the i5-13600K, will stand out featuring a 6P+8E configuration.

Maximum boost frequencies of the Core i5-13400 and i5-13500 surfaced on the web thanks to Passmark screenshots scored by TUM_APISAK. Boost frequencies of 13th Gen Core processors weren't part of the recent lineup leak. The i5-13400 has a maximum boost frequency of 4.10 GHz, while the i5-13500 comes with 4.50 GHz. Both SKUs have an identical base frequency of 2.50 GHz. The maximum turbo frequency of 4.10 GHz for the i5-13400 is significantly lower than the 5.80 GHz of the flagship i9-13900K, and the 5.10 GHz of the i5-13600K. It's also quite spaced apart from the i5-13500, with its 4.50 GHz. Perhaps Intel really wants some consumer interest in the Core i5 SKUs positioned between the i5-13400 and the i5-13600K.

(PR) POINTek Shows Off Optical Fiber Array Product Families for Silicon Photonics Integrated Chips
POINTek, Inc., a global leader and provider of high performance athermal AWGs, announced launching of new Application- Specific Optical Fiber Array Products, Silicon Photonics (SiPh) Fiber Arrays, which is capable of supporting the back-end packaging for Silicon Photonics Integrated Circuits (PIC). This new Silicon Photonics Fiber Arrays have the excellent characteristics of a fine fiber-end mirror-surface quality and an accurate fiber protrusion length uniformity to match with the prefabricated V-grooves on a Silicon PIC chip. The required fiber protrusion length is typically 5 mm with ≤ ±2 mm length uniformity in an array. Both Single Mode (SM) Fiber Arrays and Polarization Maintaining (PM) Fiber Arrays are available with or without 12-channel MT ferrule termination.

"This new SiPh Fiber Array is designed to passively align the multiple optical fibers into the wafer-fabricated V-grooves on the Silicon PIC chip without the expensive and complicated active alignment equipment, and furthermore, the passive alignment of the Array can be accomplished without monitoring the optical power," according to Dr. Donald Yu, CMO of POINTek, operating from Los Angeles, California. Yu explains that the optical fiber array is a key component to efficiently assemble the PIC devices for coupling the multiple fibers into the multiple I/O waveguides on a PIC chip. In the conventional optical active alignment assembly process, the expensive automatic precision alignment equipment should be utilized while monitoring the optical power in the packaging process, and it often takes the long processing time. "However, for this new SiPh Fiber Array, the fibers can be precisely placed in the Silicon PIC's V-grooves with the minimal operation costs. Therefore, the passive alignment of Silicon PIC could result in the very affordable SiPh device price in the market," Yu adds.

Core Performance Boost Contributes 14% to Ryzen 5 7600X Cinebench R23 Score
AMD Ryzen 5 7600X "Zen 4" 6-core/12-thread processor is shaping up to be a speed-demon for purely gaming builds, with the company claiming higher gaming performance than Intel current flagship Core i9-12900K. A combination of high clock speeds (4.70 GHz nominal, 5.30 GHz max boost), high power limits from 105 W TDP (130 W limit), the "Zen 4" IPC, and the fact that all that power headroom is available to just 6 cores, means that the chip is able to sustain boost frequencies better. But what when Core Performance Boost (CPB) is disabled? VideoCardz scored screenshots of a Cinebench R23 run to answer just that.

With CPB disabled (in the motherboard BIOS), the Ryzen 5 7600X scores 1681 points in the single-threaded test, and 13003 points in the multi-threaded one. With CPB enabled (which is the default setting), the 7600X bags 1920 points single-threaded, and 14767 points multi-threaded, which is a 14% performance increase just from the processor's boosting algo. Disabling CPB is generally seen as a silver-bullet against high temperatures for AMD processors, and even here, we see the chip running under 60°C, and pulling 60.2 W peak, as measured by HWinfo; whereas with CPB enabled, the chip can run as hot as 92.1°C, pulling up to 110 W, pushing clock speeds up to 4.45 GHz.

(PR) Intel Breaks Ground in the Silicon Heartland
Today, President Joe Biden joins Intel, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and other federal, state and local officials to celebrate breaking ground in the Silicon Heartland on two of the world's most advanced chipmaking facilities. As part of Intel's commitment to develop a skilled talent pipeline for its two new leading-edge chip fabs, Intel also announced the first phase of funding for its Ohio Semiconductor Education and Research Program. During this first phase, Intel is providing $17.7 million for eight proposals from leading institutions and collaborators in Ohio to develop semiconductor-focused education and workforce programs.

"Today marks a pivotal moment in the journey to build a more geographically balanced and resilient semiconductor supply chain. The establishment of the Silicon Heartland is testament to the power of government incentives to unlock private investment, create thousands of high-paying jobs, and benefit U.S. economic and national security. We would not be here today without the support of leaders in the administration, Congress and the state of Ohio, who share a vision to help restore the United States to its rightful place as a leader in advanced chipmaking," said Pat Gelsinger, Intel CEO.

Intel Expects to Lose More Market Share, to Reconsider Exiting Other Businesses
During Evercore ISI TMT conference, Intel announced that the company would continue to lose market share, with a possible bounce back in the coming years. According to the latest report, Intel's CEO Pat Gelsinger announced that he expects the company to continue to lose its market share to AMD as the competition has "too much momentum" going for it. AMD's Ryzen and EPYC processors continue to deliver power and efficiency performance figures, which drives customers towards the company. On the other hand, Intel expects a competing product, especially in the data center business with Sapphire Rapids Xeon processors, set to arrive in 2023. Pat Gelsinger noted, "Competition just has too much momentum, and we haven't executed well enough. So we expect that bottoming. The business will be growing, but we do expect that there continues to be some share losses. We're not keeping up with the overall TAM growth until we get later into '25 and '26 when we start regaining share, material share gains."

The only down years that are supposed to show a toll of solid competition are 2022 and 2023. As far as creating a bounceback, Intel targets 2025 and 2026. "Now, obviously, in 2024, we think we're competitive. 2025, we think we're back to unquestioned leadership with our transistors and process technology," noted CEO Gelsinger. Additionally, he had a say about the emerging Arm CPUs competing for the same server market share as Intel and AMD do so, stating that "Well, when we deliver the Forest product line, we deliver power performance leadership versus all Arm alternatives, as well. So now you go to a cloud service provider, and you say, 'Well, why would I go through that butt ugly, heavy software lift to an ARM architecture versus continuing on the x86 family?"

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1 Unveiled with Several Upscaler Changes to Improve Realism
AMD late Thursday unveiled the FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1 (FSR 2.1) performance enhancement, which builds on the performance-quality gains of FSR 2.0, while improving the visual fidelity and correcting several kinds of upscaling artifacts visible to the keen eye. To begin with, it corrected ghosting issues with geometry carrying motion vectors not matching the underlying pixel colors, which were causing a "shimmering" effect. There are also changes to the disocclusion logic that let it detect disocclusions in areas with little depth separating objects, which again should address some ghosting issues.

Upscaled output quality has been improved by turning some upscaler computations from FP16 to FP32 (full-precision), which should improve color range and temporal stability of the upscaled image. Ghosting issues on transparent geometry has also been improved by updates to the reactive mask. Ghosting issues on geometry with motion vectors not matching underlying pixel colors have been addressed with improvements to the composition and transparency mask. AMD detailed FSR 2.1 in its GPUOpen page, and has made the software available to game developers. Any game currently implementing FSR 2.0 can release FSR 2.1 support through patches. The latest version 1.7.1 patch of Farming Simulator 2022 implements FSR 2.1.

AMD also put together a video presentation with Farming Simulator 2022, highlighting the improvements made with FSR 2.1.

Non-K 13th Gen Core i5 (such as i5-13400) Based on Older "Alder Lake" Architecture, Hints Intel Slide
Remember how 12th Gen Core i5 non-K was vastly different in performance from the Core i5 K/KF on account of being 6P+0E processors in comparison to more L3 cache and a 6P+4E core-count of the i5-12600K/KF? Intel is doubling down on creating architectural confusion in the mid-range, according to a 3DCenter.org article citing a leaked slide from Intel's 13th Gen Core launch press-deck.

We had earlier thought that the 13th Gen non-K Core i5 will have a 6P+4E core-config, but still be based on "Raptor Lake" (i.e. "Raptor Cove" P-cores + "Gracemont" E-cores), in comparison to the i5-13600K/KF, which are confirmed "Raptor Lake" chips with 6P+8E configuration; but it turns out that Intel is basing the non-K 13th Gen Core i5 on the older "Alder Lake" microarchitecture. These chips will be 6P+4E (that's six "Golden Cove" P-cores + four "Gracemont" E-cores), which make them essentially identical to the i5-12600K, but without the unlocked multiplier, and a lower 65 W processor base power.

Intel Finalizes Arc A770 Specs to Feature 17.5 Gbps Memory
Intel on Thursday confirmed that there will be only four Arc "Alchemist" desktop graphics card SKUs in the retail channel, and that it will be led by the A770 Limited Edition, which maxes out the DG2-512 silicon, and features 17.5 Gbps memory across its 256-bit wide memory bus, putting 560 GB/s of memory bandwidth at its disposal. The A750 uses 16 Gbps memory data-rates, and has 512 GB/s of bandwidth. It turns out, that the mid-range A580 features a 256-bit wide memory bus, and not the previously-reported 192-bit, which means it has the same 512 GB/s bandwidth as the A750. The A580 and A750 come with 8 GB of memory, while the A770 tops out with 16 GB.

NVIDIA Possibly Flags Off the RTX 40-series Hype Train with "Project Beyond"
NVIDIA in a cryptic tweet earlier this morning (evening September 7 in the US); teased something it calls "Project Beyond," with no further description. It comes with an animation showing a bunch of green rays projecting outward. We're inclined to believe Project Beyond is a marketing campaign leading up to the launch of the next-generation GeForce RTX 40-series "Ada" graphics cards, given that it was tweeted from the NVIDIA GeForce handle, and not the main NVIDIA (corporate) handle. Intel used a similar overarching marketing campaign for the Arc "Alchemist" series, under "Odyssey." We should hear a lot more about NVIDIA's Project Beyond at the GTC conference slated for a little later this month.
Update 11:49 UTC: We're learning that NVIDIA is planning a GeForce-exclusive event on September 20.
