TSMC Etches First 2 nm Silicon at Fab 22 as Volume Production Nears
TSMC has achieved a significant milestone with the first wafer exposure using its N2 process technology at the Kaohsiung Fab 22 facility. This sets the stage for volume manufacturing by late 2025. The accomplishment demonstrates readiness to deliver next-generation semiconductors as Phase 1 nears completion and Phase 2 equipment installation progresses following its groundbreaking in August. Initially planned in 2021 for mature node production at 7 nm and 28 nm, the facility underwent a major transformation to support cutting-edge processes due to rising demand for advanced mobile, AI, and HPC chips. This NT$1.5 trillion investment, spread across six phases, will position southern Taiwan as a hub for sub-2 nm chip manufacturing.
The production roadmap outlines TSMC's strategic approach to meeting the increasing demand from the artificial intelligence and high-performance computing sectors. Phase 2 aims for volume production by the second quarter of 2026, aligning well with the industry's traditional third-quarter procurement cycle when major clients finalize orders for flagship products. Subsequent phases will introduce progressively advanced technologies, including the A16 variant with backside power delivery and eventually the A14 node using gate-all-around nanosheet transistors by 2028. This timeline significantly outpaces international competitors, particularly TSMC's Arizona operations, which are experiencing delays in reaching similar milestones. The Kaohsiung complex is part of TSMC manufacturing network that includes Hsinchu's Fab 20 and the upcoming Taichung Fab 25, providing flexibility to scale production as global semiconductor demands grow.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Project Shadowglass: AI Pixel Art Aesthetic Can Work in Real Games
Starhelm Studios is building Project Shadowglass in the Godot engine, showing that the viral AI-generated pixel art style can actually be done for real. Indie developer Dominick John is making a stealth-focused immersive sim that looks like those "impossible" AI game concepts everyone's been sharing online, except this one's actually playable. The game draws inspiration from classic titles like Thief, Deus Ex, and System Shock, wrapped in a dark fantasy setting. Players will plan heists and sneak through forbidden areas while dealing with lasting consequences for their actions. The visuals feature glowing evening light, starry skies, and red moons across kingdom villages, all rendered in 3D pixel art that runs in real-time.
What makes this notable is the timing. Just weeks ago, artists and developers were saying games with this exact aesthetic couldn't be built outside of AI generation. Online discussions questioned whether anyone claiming otherwise was just making things up. Project Shadowglass answers that skepticism directly by existing. John has been posting development clips showing the game in action, all confirmed to use zero AI generation. The graphics come from unique 3D technology that creates nostalgic pixel art while allowing full 360-degree movement. Everything shown in trailers and screenshots is captured straight from the engine. The game is now available to wishlist on Steam as development continues.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Intel XeSS 3 Expands Multi-Frame Generation Support to All XeSS 2 Titl
Intel made a surprisingly neat move as it will support XeSS 3 in all existing XeSS 2 games, Intel fellow Tom Petersen confirmed. The new update for Intel's super resolution technology will include multi-frame generation, arriving before AMD's FSR equivalent. At the Intel Tech Tour, the company confirmed that current XeSS 2 games will stay fully compatible. There are already 50 titles using XeSS 2 and more than 250 using XeSS 1 or 1.3. XeSS 3 will act as a drop-in replacement using the same API, needing no changes from developers. It is expected that the XeSS 3 Multi-Frame Generation feature will appear as a choice in the Intel Graphics Software app. You'll get to choose between 2×, 3×, and 4× frame generation modes based on what you like. However, Intel hasn't given us the full picture on how the 2× to 4× settings compare yet. They did show off two game demos though and screenshots posted by @hm1193 on X suggest ~250 FPS in Painkiller (Epic, 1080p) and ~130 FPS in Dying Light: The Beast (Max, 1080p) with XeSS 3 MFG 4x (Ultra Quality Upscaling) running on a 45 W PTL 12Xe.
What we know so far is that XeSS 3 will run on all Core Ultra CPUs and Alchemist or newer graphics. Whether you'll see a real difference might depend on the base framerate as frame generation doesn't work as well below 40-60 FPS. Intel's method looks a lot like what NVIDIA does with DLSS splitting upscaling from frame synthesis. Up until recently, Intel didn't have its own frame generation feature, a thing that changed with a blink of an eye now that they've taken a direct path into the multi-frame approach. This big step could give Intel an advantage over AMD, which still uses single-frame interpolation and is behind NVIDIA in this area. Intel has yet to share full details on XeSS 3, such as its launch date or expanded capabilities. The feature is widely expected to arrive with [Only registered and activated users can see links.
