This Week in Gaming (Week 31)
As July comes to an end and we enter the month of August, we have a week of mixed releases where the major release appears to be a StarCraft clone of sorts, built by ex Blizzard developers. This is followed by a Diablo-ish game, a No Man's Sky clone of sorts, a game about a data ghost, a Star Wars remake, a very British game and finally a very gooey sequel. August should finally start bringing some bigger releases yet again, after a pretty slow summer of new game releases.

ASRock Silently Unveils X600TM-ITX, a Thin Mini-ITX Motherboard for AM
ASRock has silently unveiled the X600TM-ITX, currently the "world's only" AM5 Thin Mini-ITX motherboard designed for AMD Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" processors along with 8000 and 7000 series CPUs with a max TDP of 65 W. Its "Thin" Mini-ITX form factor (17.0 cm x 17.0 cm) stands out with a compact 25 mm I/O shield height compared to the standard 44 mm.
Unlike traditional Mini-ITX boards, the X600TM-ITX utilizes SODIMM memory (max. 96 GB of Dual DDR5 6400+) and supports onboard power supply via one DC Jack on the rear panel I/O, eliminating the need for a separate ATX PSU. This makes it an ideal choice for DIY mini PC enthusiasts. However, the board lacks PCIe slots for discrete GPUs, limiting its gaming potential. With the PhaseSheet PTM, Thermal Grizzly Holding GmbH presents an electrically non-conductive thermal pad based on a phase change material (PCM). With PhaseSheet PTM, Thermal Grizzly closes the gap between traditional thermal paste and thermal pads based on graphene or carbon thermal pads. PhaseSheet PTM is a thermal pad that has been optimized for applications where maintenance cycles are subject to long intervals. Intel Will Not Recall Failing 13th and 14th Gen CPUs
It's official, Intel will not issue a recall for its failing 13th and 14th gen CPUs, despite the problem being much bigger than initially thought. The company was approached by The Verge and the answers to the questions asked, are not looking great. First of all, it appears that at least all 65 W or higher base power Intel 13th and 14th gen CPUs are affected—regardless of SKU and lettering—by the so-called elevated Voltage issue. To be clear, it doesn't mean all these CPUs will start to fail and Intel claims that its microcode update will solve the issue for CPUs that haven't shown any signs of stability issues. However, Intel is not promising that the microcode update will solve the stability issues of CPUs that are experiencing problems, but rather state that "It is possible the patch will provide some instability improvements", but it's asking those with stability issues to contact customer support. The patch is on the other hand expected to solve it for new CPUs, but that doesn't help those that are already experiencing stability issues.
Intel does appear to be swapping out degraded chips, but there's no guarantee that the replacement CPUs will come with the microcode update installed, as Intel is only starting to apply it to products that are currently being produced. The company has also asked all of its OEM partners to apply the update before shipping out new products, but this isn't likely to happen until sometime in early to mid-August according to Intel. It's also unclear when BIOS/UEFI updates will be available for end users from the motherboard manufacturers, since this is the only way to install the microcode update as a consumer. Intel has not gone on record to say if it'll extend the warranty of the affected products, nor did the company provide any details about what kind of information consumers have to provide to their customer support to be able to RMA a faulty CPU. Intel will not halt sales of the affected CPUs either, which means that if you're planning to or are in the middle of building a system using said CPUs, you might want to wait with using it, until a BIOS/UEFI with the microcode update in it, is available for your motherboard. (PR) Imec Develops Ultra-Low Noise Si MOS Quantum Dots Using 300mm CMO
Imec, a world-leading research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, today announced the demonstration of high quality 300 mm-Si-based quantum dot spin qubit processing with devices resulting in a statistically relevant, average charge noise of 0.6µeV/√ Hz at 1 Hz. In view of noise performance, the values obtained are the lowest charge noise values achieved on a 300 mm fab-compatible platform.
Such low noise values enable high-fidelity qubit control, as reducing the noise is critical for maintaining quantum coherence and high fidelity control. By demonstrating those values, repeatedly and reproducibly, on a 300 mm Si MOS quantum dot process, this work makes large-scale quantum computers based on Si quantum dots a realistic possibility.[Only registered and activated users can see links. NVIDIA's Supply Cut Could Spark Price Hike for RTX 40 Series
According to a report from The Economic Daily (via [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]), NVIDIA has reduced the supply of high-end RTX 40 GPUs by up to 50% in preparation for the upcoming RTX 50 Blackwell launch. This supply cut primarily affects NVIDIA's higher-end models, ranging from the RTX 4070 to the RTX 4090, and is intended to free up production capacity for the new Blackwell cards. NVIDIA is likely strategizing to create an ideal market environment, this would typically involve high demand for new products and minimal competition from rivals and its own existing lineup. Consequently, AIB partners like ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte are expected to raise prices on their RTX 40 offerings.
Despite these potential price hikes, most high-end RTX 40 GPUs currently sell at or near their MSRPs. For example, the RTX 4070 is available at $549 on Amazon, alongside the RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER at their respective MSRPs or lower. The RTX 4080 SUPER can be found below its $999 official price, while only the RTX 4090 consistently sells above its $1,599.99 MSRP.
