Seagate Technology Holdings plc, today reported financial results for its fiscal first quarter ended September 29, 2023. "Seagate's first quarter results were in line with our revised expectations. During a longer-than-typical downcycle we have prioritized financial discipline, positive free cash flow generation and execution on our HAMR product roadmap, which will extend our industry leadership in areal density and improve the total cost of ownership for our customers," said Dave Mosley, Seagate's chief executive officer. "With indications that demand fundamentals in certain markets are starting to improve, including a modest uptick in U.S. cloud, Seagate is well positioned to enhance profitability and capture attractive long-term opportunities for Mass Capacity storage."

Quarterly Financial Results
During the fiscal first quarter the Company generated $127 million in cash flow from operations, $57 million in free cash flow, and returned $145 million of capital to shareholders through its quarterly dividend. Additionally, the Company issued $1.5 billion convertible notes due 2028 bearing an interest rate of 3.5% with the proceeds primarily used to retire the outstanding balance on its remaining term loans. NVIDIA Releases GeForce 545.92 WHQL Game Ready Drivers
NVIDIA has released the latest version of its GeForce graphics drivers, GeForce 545.92 WHQL. The new drivers are Game Ready drivers for Alan Wake 2 game which launches tomorrow, October 27th, with support for both NVIDIA ray tracing and DLSS 3.5. It also brings optimizations for Ghost Runner 2. In addition to those optimizations, the new GeForce 545.92 WHQL drivers also bring a fix for VR, where desktop colors turn overexposed after closing a VR app.

As announced, Alan Wake 2 comes with hefty PC system requirements, but, according to NVIDIA, it should run well on its GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards, especially when DLSS is enabled.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite Put Through Graphics Tests, Beats AMD Radeon 780M iGPU in 3DMark
Qualcomm Snapdragon X is out to change the thin-and-light notebook market, and is out to eat the lunches of U-segment and possibly P-segment processors from Intel and AMD. The Arm based processor promises to be a competitor to Apple's M2 and M2 Max SoCs powering the latest generation of Macbooks, so Windows 11 and Chrome OS-based thin-and-lights could offer similar levels of performance and battery life. Geekerwan put the Adreno iGPU of the Snapdragon X Elite through a couple of benchmarks to show how they compare to the iGPUs of contemporary 15 W to 28 W class SoCs across Arm and x64 machine architectures, and a discrete NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU.

In the 3DMark Wildlife Extreme benchmark, designed for graphics solutions of this class, the Snapdragon X Elite scored 39.2 FPS (average), compared to 60 FPS of the Apple M2 Max, 40 FPS of the Apple M2. The Core i7-13700H "Raptor Lake" is a 45 W mobile processor with an Intel Xe-LP based iGPU that has 96 EU. This chip scored just 22.5 FPS in this test. The surprise here is the Radeon 780M, the iGPU of the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, based on the latest RDNA3 architecture, with 12 compute units (768 stream processors). This chip did just 28 FPS, falling behind even the M2. The other benchmark is "Control" at 1080p with its lowest graphics settings, and here the results are fundamentally different. AMD Mobile Processor Lineup in 2025 Sees "Fire Range," "Strix Halo," and Signficant AI Performance Increases
With Windows 11 23H2 setting the stage for increased prevalence of AI in client PC use cases, the new hardware battleground between AMD and its rivals Intel, Apple, and Qualcomm, will be in equipping their mobile processors with sufficient AI acceleration performance. AMD already introduced accelerated AI with the current "Phoenix" processor that debuts Ryzen AI, and its Xilinx XDNA hardware backend that provides a performance of up to 16 TOPS. This will see a 2-3 fold increase with the company's 2024-25 mobile processor lineup, according to a roadmap leak by "Moore's Law is Dead."

At the very top of the pile, in a product segment called "ultimate compute," which consists of large gaming notebooks, mobile workstations, and desktop-replacements; the company's current Ryzen 7045 "Dragon Range" processor will continue throughout 2024. Essentially a non-socketed version of the desktop "Raphael" MCM, "Dragon Range" features up to two 5 nm "Zen 4" CCDs for up to 16 cores, and a 6 nm cIOD. Microsoft Windows 11 23H2 Major Update Begins Rolling Out, Bets Big on Generative AI
Microsoft on Tuesday began rolling out Windows 11 23H2, the year's major update to its PC operating system. This release sees a major integration of AI into several features across the OS. To begin with, Microsoft Copilot, which made its debut with 365 and Office, is getting integrated with Windows. Powered by Bing Chat, Copilot is a GPT-based chatbot that not just gathers information from web-search, but can also be made to do a variety of OS level functions. For example, you can ask it to pair a Bluetooth device, or find something on your machine, find stuff within the files of your machine. The WIN+C key now brings up Copilot. Next up, Microsoft Paint gets its biggest feature update, with the generative AI-based Paint Cocreator feature. Not only will Paint assist your brush-strokes, in getting the shapes and contents right, but much like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney, Paint now has a prompt-based image generation feature. For now, Paint Cocreator is being released as a preview feature.

Microsoft Clipchamp, the video editor included with Windows, now has a set of generative AI enhancements of its own, with tools such as Auto Compose, which assists in building a movie with scenes, getting the sequence of clips and transitions right, getting the effects and filters right; and audio features such as narration and background score. Clipchamp also has integration with social platforms including Tik Tok, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Snipping Tool, the screengrab application of Windows, now gets a couple of AI enhancements too, such as scanning an image to extract and redact information. NVIDIA Might be Forced to Cancel US$5 Billion Worth of Orders from China
The U.S. Commerce Department seems to have thrown a big spanner into the NVIDIA machinery, by informing the company that some US$5 billion worth of AI chip orders for China falls under the latest US export restrictions. The orders are said to have been heading for Alibaba, ByteDance and Baidu, as well as possibly other major tech companies in China. This made NVIDIA's shares drop sharply when the market opened in the US earlier today, by close to five percent, dropping NVIDIA's market cap below the US$1 Trillion mark. The share price recovered somewhat in the afternoon, putting NVIDIA back in the trillion dollar club.

Based on a statement to Reuters, NVIDIA doesn't seem overly concerned, despite what appears to be huge loss in sales, with a company spokesperson issuing the following statement "These new export controls will not have a meaningful impact in the near term". The US government will implement these new export restrictions from November, which obviously didn't give NVIDIA much of a chance to avoid them and it looks as if the company is going to have to find new customers for the AI chips. ASML to Add 600 DUV Machines to China's Semiconductor Manufacturing Capacity by 2025
Thanks to the TMTPost interview with the Global Vice President and China President of ASML, Shen Bo, the Dutch semiconductor equipment manufacturer has revealed that around 1,400 of its deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography and metrology machines are currently installed in China. The company is expected to achieve a global output of 600 DUV equipment units by the end of 2025. Shen Bo stated that the company aims to install 500-600 units of DUV machinery in China by late 2025 or early 2026. The growth in ASML's Chinese revenues was notably high, with China contributing 46% of the company's system sales in 3Q 2023, representing an 82% revenue increase from the previous quarter.

China plans to build 25 12-inch wafer fabs in the next five years, covering logic wafers, DRAM, and MEMS production. ASML currently has a substantial presence in China, with 16 offices, 12 warehouses, distribution centers, development centers, training centers, and maintenance centers. The company employs over 1,600 people for its China operations. Intel Readies Xeon W-2500 Series with 4-channel Memory to Square Off Against Threadripper 7000
The HEDT/workstation segment is heating up, with Intel preparing to launch a new line of low(er) core-count processor models with I/O features competitive to those of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 series for the AMD TRX50 platform. The new W-2500 series is designed for the same Intel W790 chipset Socket LGA4677 motherboards as the W-2400 series, but with increased CPU core-counts across the board. The top W-2500 series processor model comes with a 26-core/52-thread core-configuration, 2 MB of dedicated L2 cache per core, and 48.75 MB of shared L3 cache.

Where the Intel Xeon W-2500 series aces over the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 (TRX50), is the platform I/O. While both processors offer a 4-channel DDR5 interface, the Intel chip offers a 64-lane PCI-Express Gen 5 root complex, in comparison to the 48-lane PCIe Gen 5 root complex from the processor. In the television sector, despite the robust increase in LCD panel prices and the continued high depreciation costs of OLED products, Mini LED component prices are on a downward trend. Now, apart from the relatively small-scale and still early-stage glass-based Mini LEDs, the costs of various other Mini LED TV panels are lower than those of White OLED and QD OLED. Thus, TrendForce maintains that Mini LEDs remain the most effective and optimal solution for enhancing contrast. Against this backdrop, the forecast for Mini LED TVs is positive, with an expected continuous growth in shipment volumes. Shipments are projected to reach 6.21 million units by 2024, marking a 53.5% YoY increase. The Lian Li Uni Fan SL120 V2 RGB, is now available with reverse blades. Taking the successes of its predecessor, Lian Li have refined the Uni Fan SL120 V2 to offer improved performance and aesthetics. The UNI Fan SL120 V2 Reverse has been redesigned with performance in mind. The 28 mm thick fan frame offers a 10% performance boost, providing airflow of 65.4CFM and air pressure of 2.19mmH2O for great cooling potential. Crafted from polycarbonate, PBT plastic and aluminium, the SL V2 reverse can reach speeds of up to 2000RPM. However, thanks to fully hydraulic bearings, and rubber pads, the high performance of the UNI Fan SL120 V2 is whisper quiet at just 32 dB(A).

The UNI Fan SL120 V2 Reverse continues to utilise cableless connectivity with Lian Li's popular interlocking design of previous UNI Fans. AMD Software Adrenalin 23.11.1 WHQL Released
AMD has released the latest version of the Adrenalin software, version 23.11.1 WHQL. The new AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 23.11.1 WHQL drivers add support for upcoming games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, The Invincible, and JX3 Ultimate, and add Radeon Boost support for Alan Wake 2. The new drivers also add improvements and optimizations for Stable Diffusion, Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, UL Procyon AI workloads on Radeon RX 600M, 700M, 6000, and 7000 series graphics cards.

In addition to new games support and optimizations, it also fixes several issues, including a fix for Performance Metrics Overlay FPS reporting in various games, performance issues with Radeon RX 7600 in Counter Strike 2, flickering issues in Total War: Pharaoh and Alan Wake, issues with rebuilding shader cache in Baldur Gate 3 on Vulkan API and Forza Motorsport, fix for driver crash in Forza Motorsport, and a fix for an intermittent black screen or code 31 error on some graphics cards, including the Radeon RX 6700 XT.
