NVIDIA is Looking at Samsung for HBM3 Memory and 2.5D Chip Packaging
According to news out of Korea, NVIDIA is considering Samsung as a partner not only for HBM3 memory, but also as a potential partner when it comes to 2.5D chip packaging. The latter is due to TSMC having limited capacity when it comes to handling all of its customers advanced chip packaging needs, although Samsung is apparently not the only potential partner NVIDIA is looking at. Taiwan based SPIL and US based Amkor Technology are two alternative candidates for the 2.5D chip packaging according to the Elec.
As far as HBM3 memory goes, NVIDIA doesn't have as many potential options, with SK Hynix being its current partner, who NVIDIA will continue to work with when it comes to HBM memory for its high-end AI accelerators and GPUs. It's likely that Samsung is trying to win NVIDIA back as a foundry customer, by proving that it's capable of handling the chip packaging for NVIDIA. Samsung will likely use its I-Cube 2.5D packaging technology and the Elec suggests that Samsung would still be using TSMC made GPU wafers which will be mated with Samsung HMB3 memory. Samsung has as yet not started its mass production of HMB3 memory, but have sampled customers with evaluation samples that are said to have received very positive feedback. Silicon Box Opens US$2 Billion Advanced Semiconductor Assembly Plant i
Somewhat out of the blue, Silicon Box has announced the opening of its US$2 billion semiconductor assembly plant in Singapore. The "startup" is founded by several of Marvell's founders, suggesting the company has the right pedigree to compete in what is sure to be a very competitive market over the next few years. Silicon Box is not a foundry and will at least at this point in time, not be involved in foundry services, but instead the company will focus on advanced chip packaging technologies, focusing on chiplets.
The company is promising "faster time-to-market, lower new device design cost" on its very rudimentary website, something the company has yet to prove to be capable of. However, its new plant in Singapore covers 73,000 square metres and is said to feature state of the art production equipment for turning chiplets into chips. The factory is said to create some 1,200 jobs in Singapore, suggesting that this is a company that means business. According to a comment by company founder and CEO BJ Han to Reuters, "customers had been lining up" since before the completion of the assembly plant. Silicon Box is expecting to have several AI chipset companies as its customers, including Tenstorrent, which so far is the only officially mentioned client. Intel Releases Arc GPU Graphics Drivers 101.4575 as a WHQL
Intel Graphics released the Arc GPU Graphics Drivers version 101.4575 that it originally released as a beta late last week, as a WHQL. What's interesting is that while the driver version number hasn't changed when compared to the 101.4575 beta drivers from last week, the new 101.4575 comes with a different change-log. It mentions Game On (day-one) optimization for "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart," and "Remnant II," in addition to optimization for "Exoprimal" and "Jagged Alliance 3." that were announced last week. Besides this, the "fixed isses" and "known issues" lists between the beta and WHQL are identical.

ROG Ally Gets BIOS Update that Fixes Multiple Usability Issues
ASUS has issued a BIOS update for the ROG Ally that should help resolve multiple usability issues, most of them being fairly minor issues, but they're all quality of life improvements nonetheless. To start with, ASUS has made optimisations to the performance mode with the Ally plugged in to a power source, although the company didn't explain exactly what this means. Another minor improvement allows the "Memory Assigned to GPU" setting to be kept when updating to a new BIOS version, a setting that used to get reset prior to this BIOS release.
Another minor quality of life update is the ability to reduce the backlight to 10 nits now, down from the previous 25 nits, which should make it more comfortable to use the ROG Ally in dark rooms. Finally and possibly the most important part of this update is the ability to charge at 30 W from 65 W or higher rated USB-PD chargers. What ASUS has done here is improvements to the USB-PD "handshake" to make sure that the ROG Ally gets the right power from the power adapter. This was apparently not working as intended previously and the ROG Ally would charge at a slower rate. It should be noted that not all chargers will provide enough power to the ROG Ally, especially if other devices are charging at the same time. Zenbleed Vulnerability Affects All AMD Zen 2 CPUs
A new vulnerability has been discovered in AMD Zen 2 based CPUs by Tavis Ormandy, a Google Information Security researcher. Ormandy has named the new vulnerability Zenbleed—also known as CVE-2023-20593—and it's said to affect all Zen 2 based AMD processors, which means Ryzen 3000, 4000 and 5000-series CPUs, as well as EPYC server chips. The reason why Zenbleed is of concern is because it doesn't require a potential attacker to have physical access to the computer or server in question and it's said to be possible to trigger the vulnerability via executing a javascript on a webpage. This means that the attack vector ends up being massive, at least when we're talking about something like a webhosting company.
Zenbleed is said to allow a potential attacker to gain access to things like encryption keys and user logins via triggering something called "the XMM Register Merge Optimization2, followed by a register rename and a mispredicted vzeroupper". Apparently this requires some precision for the vulnerability to work, but due to these registers being used system wide, even a sandboxed attacker can gain access to them. AMD has already issued a patch for its EPYC server CPUs, which obviously are the most vulnerable systems in question and the company is planning to release patches for all of its Zen 2 based CPUs before the end of the year. Intel Arc GPU Graphics Drivers 101.4576 Released
Intel today released the Arc GPU Graphics Drivers 101.4576 beta. These drivers do not introduce Game On (day-zero) optimizations or improvements for any new games, but address a couple of glaring issues. "Remnant 2" exhibits texture corruption during gameplay, which has been fixed. In a similar light, "World War Z" exhibits flickering textures during gameplay, which has been fixed. Radeon RX 7900 GRE Confirmed to Debut New Navi 3X GPU
It turns out that the upcoming Radeon RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) is built on the mysterious Navi 31 + Navi 32 hybrid GPU that's been in the news for a few weeks now. AMD has reportedly developed its answer to NVIDIA's AD103 silicon in the form of a new MCM that combines the 5 nm GCD of the "Navi 31," along with the substrate of the "Navi 32," which is physically smaller, and only has four 6 nm MCDs. This hybrid MCM could power AMD's mobile Radeon RX 7900 series. The chip physically only has a 256-bit wide GDDR6 memory interface. AMD felt the need for such a contraption as the "Navi 31" is likely too big for mobile platforms, and because the "Navi 32" GCD with its 60 CU (3,840 stream processors) might prove inadequate against a maxed out AD104 or cut-down AD103.
VideoCardz caught whiff of the new GPU by comparing the back sides of the Sapphire RX 7900 GRE from [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...], with that of the production Sapphire RX 7900 XT/XTX NITRO+. There are visible differences in the layout of the SMDs, and the reinforcement brace behind the GPU has a square cutout, compared to the rectangular one behind the "Navi 31" powering the RX 7900 XT/XTX NITRO+. On the RX 7900 GRE, the GCD is configured with 84 CU, or the same core-config as the RX 7900 XT, albeit with the narrower 256-bit memory interface, and 64 MB of Infinity Cache memory. It's highly likely that AMD uses this GPU to carve out the Radeon RX 7800 XT (with fewer than 84 but higher than 60 CU); while creating the RX 7800 with a maxed out "Navi 32," and the RX 7700 series with a cut-down "Navi 32" (including by narrowing the memory bus width to 192-bit by disabling one of the four MCDs). ASUS Sneaks Out Intel W680 Based mATX Motherboard for LGA-1700 Workstations
For those looking to build something more professional than your average run of the mill PC, ASUS new Pro WS W680M-ACE SE motherboard might be the thing you've been looking for. The Intel W680 chipset based board sports a mATX form factor and packs in a range of rather unusual features that you more often would find on a board from Supermicro or Tyan than ASUS. One such feature is onboard BMC remote management via an ASpeed AST2600 SoC which features a pair of Arm Cortex A7 cores and a Cortex M3, as well as a dedicated 2D graphics chip. The board also sports a SlimSAS port which supports either four SATA drives or a single PCIe 4.0 x4 storage device, although ASUS doesn't support any cables in the box for the port.
As this is a workstation motherboard, it obviously supports ECC memory and in this case we're talking DDR5 with full transactional ECC support, rather than the on-die ECC that all DDR5 features. Other more common motherboard features include a pair of PCIe 4.0 x4 NMVe M.2 slots, a single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot and a PCIe 3.0 x1 slot. The board also has a pair of 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port and a third 1 Gbps Ethernet port which is connected the AST2600, a 10 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, as well as a DisplayPort and HDMI port, plus a VGA port which again is connected to the AST2600. ASUS promises 24/7 reliability at ambient temperatures of up to 45 degrees C and a relative humidity of up to 80 percent.
