TSMC Planning Advanced Packaging Capacity Expansion due to Increased Demand for NVIDIA AI Tech
TSMC is quickly reacting to a surge in demand for NVIDIA hardware following an AI industry boom - the Taiwanese semiconductor contract manufacturer is reportedly planning to further expand its advanced packaging capabilities, due to current production lines hitting maximum capacity. News outlets have also cited the growth of 5G technology and Internet of Things (IoT) device markets as contributing factors. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] Asia reports that clients are snapping up chip-on-wafer-on-substrate (CoWoS) at an increased and unprecedented rate. TSMC has decided to provide NVIDIA - an extremely high profile customer - with an extra 10,000 CoWoS wafers. The article sourced information from a recent company shareholder meeting, where chairman Mark Liu discussed these expansions plans. He outlined improved factory facilities that will result in an additional output of 1,000 to 2,000 wafers per month. TSMC is set to upgrade equipment at its existing facilities in order to meet increasing demand.
[Only registered and activated users can see links. TSMC also pointed out that the demand for TSMC's advanced packaging capacity far exceeds the existing capacity, and it is forced to increase production as quickly as possible. Chairman Mark Liu stated that the current investment in R&D focuses on two legs, namely 3D IC (chip stacking) and advanced packaging...At present, three-quarters of TSMC's R&D expenditure is used for advanced processes, and one quarter for mature and special processes, with advanced packaging falling under mature and special processes."[Only registered and activated users can see links. AYA NEO Previews NEXT II Handheld Gaming PC
Competition in the handheld gaming PC space is heating up yet again with AYA NEO releasing more teaser material for its upcoming NEXT II model - an estimated late 2023 launch is touted. This model was first revealed last year, with the company choosing to drip feed information since then. We know that it will sport an 8-inch IPS display and be powered by an AMD Ryzen 7000 series APU, plus an unspecified discrete GPU. The ASUS ROG Ally handheld is similarly equipped with AMD mobile chipsets (albeit in slightly "Z1" and "Z1 Extreme" customized forms), but an integrated GPU takes care of graphics processing. In contrast the AYA NEO NEXT II has been designed to temper an APU and dGPU combination that can pull up to 100 W of power, so this package will offer far less portability when compared to the competition.
AYA NEO appears to be branching out in the creation of larger handheld gaming computers - the NEXT II is the chunkiest example so far - with more sizable options marked for release in the future. Comparisons to Valve's Steam Deck have been made due to AYA NEO's debuting of touchpads for this model - yet this new contender is a different beast thanks to a more traditional control layout and the system's reliance on a power outlet being nearby to sustain lengthy gaming sessions. The "semi-portable" nature of the NEXT II (plus proposed successors) is a curious prospect - will its unparalleled performance potential be enough to attract buyers or will its appeal be limited by being anchored to indoor environments?[Only registered and activated users can see links. Seagate HAMR 32 TB Capacity Drives Arriving Later This Year, 40+ TB in 2024
Seagate has recently published a preview of its next generation product hard drive lineup that utilize heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology. A company roadmap indicates that the first commercial release of 32 TB capacity HAMR Mach 2 drives is penciled in for a Q3 2023 window, with a short hop to increased storage (40 TB) models predicted for launch in 2024. Seagate is also expected to release 24 TB and 28 TB capacity HDDs - based on the older perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology - at some point in the near future. Technology news outlets anticipate that these two product ranges will co-exist for a while, until Seagate decides to favor its more advanced thermal magnetic storage solution. A lucky data center client has been getting hands-on time with evaluation HAMR hardware, as [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]. Seagate has since supplied other enterprise customers with unspecified HAMR HDD models.
Executives at Seagate have been openly discussing their HAMR products - destined to sit in new Corvault server equipment. Gianluca Romano, the company's chief financial officer, mentioned several models during a presentation at the Bank of America 2023 Global Technology conference: "When you go to HAMR, our 32-terabyte (model) is based on 10 disks and 20 heads. So same number of disks and head of the current 20-terabyte PMR...So all the increase is coming through areal density. The following one, 40-terabyte, still (has) the same 10 disks and 20 heads. And also the 50 (TB model), we said at our earnings release, in our lab, we are already running individual disk at 5 terabytes."[Only registered and activated users can see links. Possible AMD Ryzen Zen 5 Prototype CPU Emerges from Online Databases
AMD made its upcoming Ryzen 8000 CPU series official [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] during a "Meet the Experts" presentation - a roadmap demonstrates that this next-generation "Zen 5" + "Navi 3.5" mainstream desktop processor lineup is expected to arrive in 2024. Leaked information (from last month) points to "Granite Ridge" being AMD's codename for the upcoming processor product range, with high-end examples maxing out at 16 CPU cores across two CCDs. Benchleaks has recently spotted a pair of curious looking AMD engineering samples - entries have appeared on the [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] and [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] distributed computing platforms.
The mystery SKU seems to be a prototype CPU model that sports 8 cores and 16 threads - the AMD product number (OPN) for this unit is "00-000001290-11_N" which does not correspond to anything currently on the market. A Family ID of 26 is specified - Benchleaks theorizes that this number assignment is "Zen 5" specific - given that the existing Family 25 (19H) identifier was assigned to Zen 3 and 4. It should be noted that one of AMD's alleged test systems appears to have been running unreleased graphics hardware - a non-specific Radeon unit (with 12 GB of VRAM) is mentioned within einstein@home's information dump, this could be a potential mid-range RX 7000-series card. A Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU with an unusually low video memory allocation of 16 GB is listed in LHC@home's entry.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Intel Core Ultra 7 1002H "Meteor Lake-P" Processor with 16 Cores and 22 Threads Surfaces
A few weeks ago, we [Only registered and activated users can see links. Today, we are in luck as there is another Meteor Lake-P processor running in the wild, spotted by @InstLatX64 on Twitter. Called Intel Core Ultra 7 1002H, the CPU represents a similar SKU to the previously discovered 1003. Also, having 16 cores in total, they are split into two categories: 6 Performance cores, and ten Efficient cores, two of which are on the SoC die, divided from the remaining eight on the compute die. Interestingly, only P-cores feature 2-way hyperthreaded, so 12 threads from P-cores and ten threads from E-cores combine into 22 threads.
What we don't know is the frequency of this chip and the position it plays in the Meteor Lake-P family of processors. The screenshot states a potential base clock of 3000 MHz; however, it could be an early engineering sample chip, so we have to wait for the final design. With 1003H having exactly the same core/thread number, we expect that the newly discovered 1002H has potentially lower clocks and TDP to match.[Only registered and activated users can see links. NVIDIA Finds a Clever Way to Boost DLAA Adoption—To Turn it into a DLSS Preset
DLAA, or deep-learning anti-aliasing, is essentially DLSS without the image upscaling. The technology holds the rendering resolution at par with your display's, but uses AI to attempt to add detail to your game, particularly smoothing out edges and other forms in the raster graphics that could require anti-aliasing. The result is image quality that's visibly superior to even native-resolution, and other methods of anti-aliasing, such as TAA and MSAA. Since all this is happening at native resolution, there is zero performance gain, some performance loss, however not one that is comparable to MSAA. It's a wonderful technology, and any game that supports DLSS should naturally expose DLAA in its quality settings to end-users, however this isn't the case. DLAA is seeing sluggish adoption among game developers, and NVIDIA has taken it upon itself to fix this.
NVIDIA is working on updates to DLSS that essentially makes DLAA a quality preset. We know from an [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] that DLSS performance presets don't just linearly scale render resolution, but affect other algorithm features, such as Reflex. A unique "G" preset was found in an Unreal Engine 5.2 presentation by Epic. It turns out, that this preset is part of the updates NVIDIA is planning for not just DLSS 3, but also DLSS 2, which makes DLAA a quality preset for DLSS. When engaged, it renders the game at 100% display resolution, without upscaling, but applies much of the AI image reconstruction features of DLSS. With this, it is hoped that many more game developers will pick up on DLAA, and integrate it with practically any game that supports DLSS.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Noctua's Next-Gen NF-A14 Fans Use Liquid Crystal Polymer Impellers
Noctua is preparing a major design update for its NF-A series fans. The company is preparing its next-generation fans with the new Sterrox liquid-crystal polymer material. LCP provides superior structural stability for the blades at high RPM, allowing them to maintain their correct profile, and maximizing their airflow and noise characteristics; in comparison to impellers made from conventional thermoplastics such as LDPE, PBT, PVC, ABS, etc. LCPs also feature very high strength-to-weight ratio, which is what makes another popular kind of LCP, Kevlar, the material of choice for anti-ballistic armors.
For case fans, the impeller has such structural strength to hold its shape, that Noctua has reduced clearance between the impeller and the bore of the frame to under 1 mm, which helps guide all of the fan's airflow axially. Other design innovations to the impeller include channels that accelerate airflow toward the edges of the fan blades, and a stepped inlet structure toward the impeller hub that creates a pressure-differential, and guides the air better toward the impeller blades. The fan hub is metal reinforced, and the motor uses an SSO2 fan bearing. The frame of the fan, has integrated anti-vibration pads. Noctua plans to launch the next-gen 140 mm A-series case fan in Q1-2024.[Only registered and activated users can see links. The 27GR93U-B and 32GR93U-B as the new models are called, measure 27 and 32-inches respectively and both offer 4K resolution and a 144 Hz refresh rate. Comparing the 27GR93U-B to the 27GN950-B, the first really obvious difference is the use of a standard IPS panel instead of a Nano IPS panel and this leads to a slight reduction in the DCI-P3 colour gamut from 98 to 95 percent.
The new models are only certified for FreeSync Premium, rather than FreeSync Premium Pro, but that appears to be the only obvious reduction in gaming features, as G-Sync compatible support, VRR, Black Stabilizer, Dynamic Action Sync, Crosshairs and the FPS counter are all present and accounted for. Both displays have two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 and one upstreams and two downstreams USB 3.0 ports, as well as a 4-pole 3.5 mm jack for a headset. On the plus side, these new models have slightly lower power consumption, with a typical power consumption of about 50 W for the 27-inch model and 65 W for the 32-inch model. The stand still supports tilt, height and pivot adjustment. No official pricing was announced, but we found the 27-inch model listed in Hong Kong for the equivalent of around US$560, which is around US$200 less than what the 27GN950-B retails for.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Chinese Games Market Hit $45.5 Billion in Revenue for 2022
A set of reports published by [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] has calculated that the games market in China generated $45.5 billion in revenue last year. Native games companies (including Tencent and NetEase) accounted for 47% of worldwide mobile games revenue, along with a 39% revenue share of international PC games sales. Domestic figures show that 66% of China's gaming revenue comes from mobile, 31% from PC and 3% from console titles. The company's analysts posit that China persists as the largest global games market, with upward trends pushing growth to a predicted $57 billion of revenue by the year 2027. The gaming population is expected to expand to around 730 million participants by then.
Lisa Hanson, CEO and founder of Niko Partners included her own observations of the region's dominance: "Chinese game companies are growing internationally, and they are making bold investments at higher rates than ever. PC games revenue generated overseas by Chinese owned companies rose by 22% in 2022 and is expected to grow by a 13.8% CAGR through 2027 - which is higher than the domestic growth rate by a significant margin... China's market can be tough for domestic and foreign companies, but the country remains the number one market globally for games revenue and the number of gamers, and cannot be ignored.[Only registered and activated users can see links. GDDR6 VRAM Prices Falling According to Spot Market Analysis - 8 GB Selling for $27
The price of GDDR6 memory has continued to fall sharply - over recent financial quarters - due to an apparent decrease in demand for graphics cards. Supply shortages are also a thing of the past—industry experts think that manufacturers have been having an easier time acquiring components since late 2021, but that also means that the likes of NVIDIA and AMD have been paying less for VRAM packages. Graphics card enthusiasts will be questioning why these savings have not been passed on swiftly to the customer, as technology news outlets (this week) have been picking up on interesting data—it demonstrates that spot prices of GDDR6 have decreased to less than a quarter of their value from a year and a half ago. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] has presented a case example of 8 GB GDDR6 now costing $27 via the spot market (through DRAMeXchange's tracking system), although manufacturers will be paying less than that due to direct contract agreements with their favored memory chip maker/supplier.
A 3DCenter.org staffer had difficulty sourcing the price of 16 Gb GDDR6 VRAM ICs on the spot market, so it is tricky to paint a comparative picture of how much more expensive it is to equip a "budget friendly" graphics card with a larger allocation of video memory, when the bill-of-materials (BoM) and limits presented by narrow bus widths are taken into account. NVIDIA is releasing a GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB variant in July, but the latest batch of low to mid-range models (GeForce RTX 4060-series and Radeon RX 7600) are still 8 GB affairs. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] points to GPU makers sticking with traditional specification hierarchy for the most part going forward: "(models) with double the VRAM (two 16 Gb chips per channel on both sides of the PCB) are usually reserved for the more lucrative professional GPU market."[Only registered and activated users can see links. (PR) Sabrent Introduces its Quad NVMe SSD to PCIe 4.0 x16 Card
The Sabrent Quad NVMe SSD to PCIe 4.0 x16 Card (EC-P4BF) is the perfect complement for a desktop that requires additional high-performance storage. Add one, two, three, or four NVMe SSDs with a single, physical x16 PCIe slot adapter. A bifurcation setting in the BIOS is required. Only M.2 M key SSDs are supported, but older and newer generation SSDs in the 2230/2242/2260/2280 form factors will work at up to PCIe 4.0 speeds. The adapter is also backward compatible with PCIe 3.0/2.0 slots. Drives can be accessed individually or placed into a RAID via Intel VROC, AMD Ryzen NVMe RAID, UEFI RAID, or software-based RAID through Windows Storage Spaces when respective criteria are met.
High-performance drives and systems may require high-end cooling, and this adapter has you covered. It's constructed out of aluminium material for physical stability and improved heat dissipation. It also includes thermal padding for all four SSDs to keep things cool and in place. Active cooling for high-performance environments is optional with a switchable fan. The adapter is plug-and-play with driverless operation. Rear-mounted LEDs quickly show the drive status for a quick visual update. The host must support PCIe bifurcation (lane splitting) to access more than one drive, so be sure to check your motherboard's manual ahead of time.[Only registered and activated users can see links. TSMC Boss Responds to Reports of Brutal Corporate Culture
Mark Liu, the executive Chairman of TSMC, has responded to recent reports released by the North American media about supposedly challenging [Only registered and activated users can see links. Current and former employees of the company's U.S operation have taken anonymously to Glassdoor to complain about "brutal" treatment on behalf of TSMC leadership—resulting in a 27% overall approval rating, which sits unfavorably next to the scores of nearby competitors—for example Intel gets 85%, albeit from far more user submissions. Liu has made comments to a Taiwanese news outlet (Focus Taiwan) where he suggests that: "those who are unwilling to take shifts should not enter the industry, since this field isn't just about lucrative wages but rather a passion for (semiconductors)."
TSMC is trying to meet staffing targets for its Phoenix, Arizona operation, but early feedback and difficult residential living could stifle this recruitment drive. Liu thinks that his North American division will offer potential employees a workplace culture that is unlike the one set for crew back in Taiwan. He told the local reporter that American TSMC team members will have an easier time, relative to how things are run at the company's native facilities. He also states that leadership is open to discussions with NA workers, as long as company values are followed (to a tee).[Only registered and activated users can see links. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC Pricing Revealed on GOG
Fans of CD Projekt Red's action role-playing Cyberpunk 2077 are looking forward to the release of extra content—the Polish gaming company has not set a firm launch date for its upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC campaign, but their own digital distribution platform - GOG.com - has aready spilled a few beans this week. Keen-eyed gamers noticed that a German language listing for the expansion had appeared (likely by mistake—it no longer exists) on GOG with a "BALD" tag—meaning that the DLC is due "soon." This information was captured in screenshots and quickly uploaded to the [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...].
Industry insiders are expecting CD Projekt Red to make a Phantom Liberty-related announcement at this year's (currently ongoing) Summer Game Fest, but media attention has already focused on the apparent pricing set for this piece of DLC. According to the screenshots Phantom Liberty will be available for a €29.99 pre-order price in Western Europe territories, which suggests a possible charge of around $30-35 for North American customers. Comparisons to The Witcher 3's post-release experience will inevitably crop up, and gamers will be questioning whether this expansion will offer good value for money—CD Projekt Red has indicated that this is their most expensive DLC undertaking in terms of development costs, but that has no bearing on how much content will exist within the final retail release. Team Red's "Storm Peak" processors received some [Only registered and activated users can see links. Industry experts anticipate that this Zen 4-based product range will shake up the workstation and HEDT markets upon arrival - with predictions of a Q3 2023 launch window. According to the leaked listings posted by momomo_us on social media—future workstation PCs will be catered for with AMD's PRO "79x5WX" family, and HEDT systems will be best served by non-PRO "79x0X" variants.
Prior leaks allege that the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7905WX "workstation" range will be compatible with AMD's SP5 socket. This high end platform should support 8-channel DDR5 memory, and be capable of running up to 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes and 8 PCIe Gen 3 lanes, although it lacks CPU and memory overclocking functions. In contrast the Ryzen Threadripper 7900X HEDT range is expected to offer full overclocking support for CPU and memory—but tipsters reckon its appeal could be limited by the platform's SP6 socket being restricted to 4-channel DDR5 memory configurations and a maximum 64 PCIe Gen 5.0 lanes—as seen on AMD's EPYC 8004 "Siena" family.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Vortex Shows off New Prebuilt Keyboards and Premium Keyboard Kits at Computex 2023
It's been a while since we last reviewed a Vortexgear keyboard so I wasn't surprised to see a brand new keyboard line from the brand. Instead, Vortex used its presence at Computex to show off the new [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...], which is also available as a barebones kit. Intriguing also were new keyboard kits from Vortex that shifted away from plastic in favor of thick CNC-machined aluminium. The M0110A is an 1800 form factor keyboard kit that uses the smaller M0110 as the base for the feature set whereas the Model M and Model F77/F62 go more daring with the designs that are reminiscent of other popular keyboards on the market. I especially liked the Model M SSK with its curved top frame that makes for a visually different keyboard from the norm and Vortex says these kits will follow the pre-order/group buy purchase scheme soon, if not already by the time this news post is up.[Only registered and activated users can see links. (PR) Cyan Worlds Defends Presence of "AI Assisted Content" in Firmament
As many of you have seen or noticed, our credits in Firmament mention "AI Assisted Content". This has been present in the credits for Firmament since release day, and we have never hidden this information: "The contents listed as "AI Assisted" in the credits are "Journals, logs, checklists, newspapers, stories, songs, poems, letters, loosely scattered papers; all backer portraits; all founders portraits; the "sunset" paintings; the art-nouveau wallpaper in the Swan dormitory hallways; propaganda banners; coastal spill decal kit; all voiced mentor, announcer, founder, and other speeches; backer-exclusive content."
"AI Assisted" does not mean wholly AI-generated. Unfortunately, there have been articles published recently which have implied (especially in their headlines) that Cyan generated much of Firmament using AI tools. This is categorically false and misleading, and we are disappointed and frustrated to see this happening. Some folks may be concerned about our usage of AI, so in the interest of clarification: The voice performances in Firmament were voiced 100% of the time by a talented member of our development team who elected not to be credited by name. Their voice was simply modulated for the final product with one of these tools (and with their full permission and control). This same member of the development team has elected not to be credited in prior games of ours as well, for privacy concerns, and not anything to do with tools usage in our games.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Leopold at Computex 2023: Updated Wired and Wireless Keyboards
Korean keyboard brand Leopold had a strong showing at Computex this year with a refreshed lineup of its keyboards for everyone to try. Leopold tends to sell different keyboards in different countries so it's hard to say which ones are brand new for the show, and thus I figured we briefly summarize the brand's offerings. The main takeaway I had is Leopold has decided to go with Cherry MX for all its mechanical keyboards and there will be fewer Topre keyboards going forward. The keyboards will also offer wireless connectivity wherever possible. Some keyboards also stray away from Leopold's classic black and white colors in favor of bolder, multi-tone themes. There are simply too many keyboards to individually list here, especially the absence of clarity on which ones will be sold where, so please take a look at the photos below, including past the break, and reach out to Leopold directly to express your interest if any caught your eye.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Mistel at Computex 2023: Ultra Low Profile Mechanical Keyboards and Ne
Mistel Keyboards had a large booth at Computex this year showcasing products from the brand in addition to those from Vortexgear and Leopold. We'll cover the other two separately but this post caters to the Taiwanese peripheral brand Mistel. When I had last seen them in 2020, the man behind Mistel had told me of his plans to have ultra low profile mechanical keyboards as well as setting up Mistel's own factory to produce and sell keycaps. In 2023, both of these plans have come to fruition. The Mistel Air One uses Cherry's ULP mechanical switches we saw before on the [Only registered and activated users can see links. Mistel also opened [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]—a sister brand dedicated to its in-house designed and manufactured keycaps. Click Here To Register...] that focuses on a "brand new custom high-efficiency 180 W USB-C power adapter," co-developed with Chicony. This unit is touted as a significant upgrade over the existing 60 W model that is bundled with their Laptop 13 system - Nirav Patel, Framework's CEO and co-founder explains: "The (180 W) adapter body is just 116.6 x 58.2 x 27 mm, and the enclosure is made of 30% post-consumer-recycled plastic. That's exactly the thickness and depth and twice the length of our 60 W power adapter, while outputting 3x higher wattage. Pretty incredible! Our PFC plus asymmetrical half-bridge flyback architecture uses ON Semi NCP1622 and JoulWatt JW1556 controllers along with latest generation GaN switching parts from both GaN Systems and Navitas, peaking at an amazing 93% efficiency."
The Framework Laptop 16 has some hidden potential according to Patel - he reveals that this flagship model is now future-proofed with support for 240 W power adapters: "We needed to solve for the tricky task of creating an adapter small and portable enough to be a great fit for the Framework Laptop 16 in an integrated graphics configuration while also outputting enough power to handle the Graphics Module with a discrete GPU. 180 W covers the majority of use cases while still being extremely compact. If you have a Graphics Module installed, set your OS to maximum performance mode, and run a sustained heavy load, it is possible to draw from the battery while plugged in. If that doesn't sound like a good tradeoff to you, the Framework Laptop 16 supports 240 W USB PD 3.1 power adapters too, so you can configure your DIY Edition without a power adapter and bring your own 240 W one instead."[Only registered and activated users can see links. Immortals of Aveum Gets New Gameplay Trailer
Electronic Arts and Ascendant Studios have released a new gameplay trailer for its upcoming fantasy first-person magic shooter, Immortals of Aveum. Based on Unreal Engine 5.1, this single-player FPS will put the player into role of Jak, an Immortal capable of using all three colors of magic. The game is set into original universe and the latest trailer shows what is said to be one of the epic battles in the game, and it surely looks impressive.
Immortals of Aveum could be the first Unreal Engine 5.1 game to be released as it is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on July 20th. Previously, EA has released rather high PC system requirements, which included either a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 12 GB or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 16 GB graphics card to run the game at 1440p at 60 FPS, and that is with medium to high game settings.[Only registered and activated users can see links. From Generic Default to…COLORS EVERYWHERE!
When we began development, we didn't even think about giving each character a unique color for their attacks. At the start, every character just had a generic, dull-looking impact effect that was shared with enemy sprites! But then we realized how much cooler everyone would look if we splashed some color into their punches, kicks, and every other attack! Thus…[Only registered and activated users can see links. Intel Simplifies Packaging for Core i9-13900K & i9-13900KS CPUs
Intel has informed customers that it is adjusting the retail packaging for two 13th Generation Raptor Lake processors—the Core i9-13900K and Core i9-13900KS are popular choices for extreme gamers who demand the best from their CPUs, but did the presence of a premium protective shell also attract certain buyers who enjoy displaying silicon-related mantelpieces? Team Blue will be introducing a more sober looking boxed solution for the aforementioned SKUs - effective in universal and Chinese markets. Intel reasons that it wants to save on the volumetric storage of processors during the shipment process—the smaller box designs will result in a unit increase per pallet. By their estimation this redesign could quadruple the number of boxes in each shipping package - from the previous 324 to a new goal of around 1620.
The Core i9-13900K and Core i9-13900KS were shipped (until recently) in "Tier 4" boxes, but Intel's new cost and space saving drive has the two processors destined to sit in their "Tier 2" retail package which appears to be a standard folding paperboard carton (as seen containing Core i7 and lower end SKUs). The announcement included a set of preview renders, but actual boxed dimensions were not shared in the Product Change Notification (PCN) document. The new packaging regime looks smaller when compared to the older combination of a "premium silver tinted plastic wafer package" plus box sleeve. Team Blue will ultimately shave off a few bucks for themselves in the process, but there is no indication that these savings will be passed onto the end user. Tom's Hardware reckons that a late adjustment to retail packaging could foreshadow the arrival of a successor CPU range—Raptor Lake Refresh is speculated to form the next desktop lineup, since the future of [Only registered and activated users can see links. Top US Crypto & Blockchain Investment Firm Heading to Britain
Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), a leading American venture capital firm is in the process of setting up its first international office (outside of its California base of operations) in the United Kingdom. One of their mission statements reads: "(we) invest in seed to venture to late-stage technology companies, across bio + healthcare, consumer, crypto, enterprise, fintech, games, and companies building toward American dynamism." News sites have reported on Facebook and Twitter being notable "safe" prospects for a16z's team in the past. The company is hedging its bets on the UK government's fairly lax approach to crypto and blockchain regulation, following crackdowns on the cryptocurrency industry in the US. News outlets point to a notable case where the North American financial watchdog/regulator is suing the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, due to activities "placing investors' assets at significant risk." The new Andreessen Horowitz London office is marked for a late 2023 opening—Chris Dixon the head of crypto investing at a16z has [Only registered and activated users can see links. He has also declared that the UK Prime Minister - Rishi Sunak - is very pleased about a16z setting up shop in the City of London (financial district). The UK leader's statement reads: "As we cement the UK's place as a science and tech superpower, we must embrace new innovations like Web3, powered by blockchain technology, which will enable start-ups to flourish here and grow the economy. That success is founded on having the right regulation and guardrails in place to protect consumers and foster innovation. While there's still work to do, I'm determined to unlock opportunities for this technology and turn the UK into the world's Web3 centre. That's why I am thrilled world-leading investor, Andreessen Horowitz, has decided to open their first international office in the UK - which is testament to our world-class universities and talent and our strong competitive business environment."[Only registered and activated users can see links. Reddit Communities Go Private in Protest Over Policy Adjustments
Thousands of dicussion communities on Reddit have now shut doors to public access—warning signs started to appear online over past weeks, with community leaders drumming up support for a protest against the social news site's policy changes, including a strategy to monetize access to a vast pool of user data. For example the highly popular r/hardware subreddit is now "a private community"—unregistered users are greeted with a succinct message on the front page: "This subreddit is temporarily closed in protest of Reddit killing third party apps, see /r/ModCoord and /r/Save3rdPartyApps for more information." News sites are reporting that close to a total of 3500 subreddits have joined the "blackout" effort. According to the BBC this includes "five of the 10 most popular communities on the site - r/gaming, r/aww, r/Music, r/todayilearned and r/pics - which each have memberships of more than 30 million people."
A group message was shared by a moderation collective last week: "On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love." A moderator (speaking to the BBC anonymously) said that the protest will be effective due to "strength in numbers," which will presumably grab the attention of Reddit's executive team.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Abit Unveils AB-B760ITX Socket LGA1700 Motherboard
Abit unveiled the AB-B760ITX, a DIY retail segment Mini-ITX motherboard based on Intel Socket LGA1700, and B760 chipset. The board comes in two variants based on PCB color—black and white. It uses a conventional power input configuration of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS, with a 10-phase VRM conditioning it for the processor. The LGA1700 processor is wired to two DDR4 memory slots for up to 64 GB of dual-channel DDR4-4000 memory; and an M.2 NVMe Gen 4 slot. The main PCIe interface is PCI_Express 5.0 x16. Connectivity includes 6-channel HD audio, Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.2 WLAN, 2.5 GbE wired LAN, and four USB 3.2 ports. Display outputs include a pair of HDMI and one DisplayPort. Besides the M.2 slot, you get four SATA 6 Gbps ports. Abit is pricing these boards at RMB ¥599 (USD $84).
If it feels like you've seen a ghost, it's because Abit withdrew from the DIY PC component space around 2012, after fulfilling its support obligations for the last of its products shipped in 2008. Since then, the brand has been held by Universal Scientific Industrial, a mainland Chinese company that took it over from the original Taiwan-based Abit Computer.[Only registered and activated users can see links.
