(PR) NVIDIA Chief Scientist Reaffirms Huang's Law
In a talk, now available online, NVIDIA Chief Scientist Bill Dally describes a tectonic shift in how computer performance gets delivered in a post-Moore's law era. Each new processor requires ingenuity and effort inventing and validating fresh ingredients, he said in a recent keynote address at Hot Chips, an annual gathering of chip and systems engineers. That's radically different from a generation ago, when engineers essentially relied on the physics of ever smaller, faster chips.
The team of more than 300 that Dally leads at NVIDIA Research helped deliver a whopping 1,000x improvement in single GPU performance on AI inference over the past decade (see chart below). It's an astounding increase that [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] was the first to dub "[Only registered and activated users can see links. The unnamed Gigabyte system wielder tallied 2861 (SC) and 17974 (MC) on an overclocked 14600K. VideoCardz noted that: "this represents a minor increase in single-core performance and approximately an 8% improvement in multi-threaded performance." They brought in a previously leaked higher-end CPU for comparative purposes: "Since the latter score is using the same (Gigabyte) system as in the [Only registered and activated users can see links. As a co-founder at [Only registered and activated users can see links. In that time, we've grown considerably but, through it all, a constant has been our love for cars, pushing the limits of gaming technology, and creating a racing community for everyone. With less than two weeks to go before we release the brand-new [Only registered and activated users can see links. From the beginning, we've designed the latest Forza Motorsport to be an evolving racing platform, with new content that adds to the experience of automotive entertainment through skill and competition. Latest AMD AGESA Hints at Ryzen 7000G "Phoenix" Desktop APUs
AMD is preparing to launch its first APUs on the Socket AM5 desktop platform, with the Ryzen 7000G series. While the company has standardized integrated graphics with the Ryzen 7000 series, it does not consider the regular Ryzen 7000 series "Raphael" processors as APUs. AMD considers APUs to be processors with overpowered iGPUs that are fit for entry-mainstream PC gaming. As was expected for a while now, for the Ryzen 7000G series, AMD is tapping into its 4 nm "Phoenix" monolithic silicon, the same chip that powers the Ryzen 7040 series mobile processors. Proof of "Phoenix" making its way to desktop surfaced with CPU support lists for the latest AGESA SMUs (system management units) compiled by Reous, with the AGESA ComboAM5PI 1.0.8.0 listing support for "Raphael," as well as "Phoenix." Another piece of evidence was an ASUS B650 motherboard support page that listed a UEFI firmware update encapsulating 1.0.8.0, which references an "upcoming CPU."
Unlike "Raphael" and "Dragon Range," "Phoenix" is a monolithic processor die built on the TSMC 4 nm foundry node. Its CPU is based on the latest "Zen 4" microarchitecture, and features an 8-core/16-thread configuration, with 1 MB of L2 cache per core, and 16 MB of shared L3 cache. The star attraction here is the iGPU, which is based on the RDNA3 graphics architecture, meets the DirectX 12 Ultimate feature requirements, and is powered by 12 compute units worth 768 stream processors. Unlike "Raphael," the "Phoenix" silicon is known to feature an older PCI-Express Gen 4 root complex, with 24 lanes, so you get a PCI-Express 4.0 x16 PEG slot, one CPU-attached M.2 NVMe slot limited to Gen 4 x4, and a 4-lane chipset bus. "Phoenix" features a dual-channel (4 sub-channel) DDR5 memory controller, with native support for DDR5-5600. A big unknown with the Ryzen 7000G desktop APUs is whether they retain the Ryzen AI feature-set from the Ryzen 7040 series mobile processors.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Lower Mainstream Graphics Segment Sees Action with Arc A580 and GeForce RTX 3050 6GB
The lower mainstream graphics segment is considered to be the starting point for PC gaming, targeting 1080p gaming with medium-thru-high (though not extreme) settings, and popular e-sports titles at 1080p with high settings. This segment is preparing to see some action in the coming days, with the introduction of two new products, the Intel Arc A580, and a new 6 GB variant of the GeForce RTX 3050. We've seen the A580 "Alchemist" in development for a while now.
Based on the 6 nm ACM-G12 silicon, the Arc A580 comes with 24 Xe Cores, or 384 EU (execution units), which work out to 3,072 unified shaders, compared to the 3,584 of the A750, 4,096 of the A770, and the significantly lower 1,024 of the entry-level A380. The most interesting aspect of the A580 is its memory. Although 8 GB in size, it uses a wide 256-bit memory interface, and 16 Gbps memory speed, which works out to a generous 512 GB/s of bandwidth. The A580 also comes with a full PCI-Express 4.0 x16 host interface.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]

Intel Releases Arc GPU Graphics Drivers 101.4885 Beta
Intel today released the latest version of the Arc GPU Graphics drivers. Version 101.4885 beta comes with optimization for "Assassin's Creed Mirage," and "Forza Motorsport." Gamers can expect up to 19% performance uplift at 1440p with "Forza Motorsport" at High settings; and up to 27% uplift at 1080p with High+RT for "Resident Evil 4," and up to 12% uplift at 1080p with Ultra settings for "The Last of Us Part 1."
With this release, Intel also introduced a number of fixes. An application crash with EA FC 24 has been fixed. A model/character corruption seen with "Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection" has been fixed. Several instability issues with "Starfield" have been fixed. A display/color corruption with "Dying Light 2: Stay Human" has been fixed. A bug that caused "Fortnite" to crash with Global Illumination set to "epic," has been fixed. An application crash for Adobe After Effects during render operations, has been fixed. A bug that caused some Arc A-series GPUs to display a higher GPU clock value than expected, has been fixed.

(PR) Diablo IV Coming to Steam on October 17
The gates of the Burning Hells have opened once more, welcoming more of Lilith's children home. Diablo IV is a game about slaying nightmarish creatures and acquiring powerful gear, but also about forging memories with new and old friends. We want to break down barriers to make it easier for wanderers everywhere to defend Sanctuary. Which is why we're honored to announce…Diablo IV will be available to play on Steam starting October 17! [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...], and the game is available to wishlist.
Diablo IV's presence on Steam is in addition to Battle.net, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4, so wanderers playing the game on any existing platform need not make any changes. Those wanting to play on Steam will need to first purchase the game on that platform, then connect Diablo IV to a Battle.net account (as we require for all platforms). This enables cross-platform play and more. Players using Steam will have access to features specific to that platform, such as Steam achievements, their Steam friends list, and the option to invite those friends to play in-game. We're looking forward to seeing more defenders of Sanctuary band together and welcome any feedback you may have.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]

(PR) Linksys Announces Global Expansion with Additional Offices
Linksys, an iconic Home and Small Office connectivity company, announces plans to expand globally with a development location in Taipei, Taiwan, and a new Sales and Marketing location in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Linksys is reasserting itself in both the Residential Retail and Residential Service Provider markets, which has driven the need to expand beyond its Irvine, California headquarters of 35+ years. The new offices will be near the major technology hubs of both countries and are also in close proximity to several universities that offer the talent necessary for Linksys to drive its growth targets over the next five years and beyond.
"It's a big world out there, and it is long overdue that Linksys push out beyond our Irvine, California headquarters and create anchor offices in other regions where we expect to grow in the coming years," said Linksys CEO Jonathan Bettino. "Although we work from home quite a lot, having an office to go to a couple of times a week helps build teamwork—and more often than not, when we are in the office, we solve complex problems much faster."[Only registered and activated users can see links. Cooler Master is Readying 27-inch 1440p Mini LED Monitor with 576 Zones
With a bunch of new OLED displays launching from several major brands, it's been very quiet on the Mini LED front. This is despite several panel makers having showed off new Mini LED panels this year. That said, it now looks like Cooler Master is getting ready to launch a new 27-inch model called the Tempest GP2711, according to TFT Central. Looking at the base specs, this is a standard 165 Hz 2560 x 1440 monitor that's built around a VA-type panel with a sub 4 ms grey to grey response time.
However, what makes it stand out from the crowd is the fact that it has a 576-zone Mini LED backlight, which helps deliver an SDR brightness of 600 cd/m². Furthermore, Cooler Master has gone with a Quantum Dot coating, which should make colour pop. It should also have a 3000:1 contrast ratio and a colour gamut that covers 95% of the DCI-P3 reference space. Gaming features include FreeSync Premium Pro support. Connectivity wise the Tempest GP2711 is said to sport one DP 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 ports, as well as a USB Type-C with DP Alt mode support and 15 W power delivery. There are also two downstreams USB 3.0 ports and an audio out, as well as presumably another USB input, as the monitor is said to feature KVM support. The stand supports standard tilt, height and swivel adjustments. According to TFT Central, the Tempest GP2711 should retail for around US$449 when it arrives early next year.[Only registered and activated users can see links. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] launches on October 5, when players will be able to dive into the adventure of Basim Ibn Is'haq, a young street thief who grows into a Master Assassin, and explore the vibrant city of Baghdad circa the ninth century. Assassin's Creed Mirage is intended to evoke the feel of early games in the series, with an emphasis on stealth and the return of many familiar gameplay and thematic elements - but it's firmly modern in its approach to accessibility, with a number of features to ensure that as many people can play as possible.
"Our philosophy was to create a game that goes back to its roots while retaining the modern accessibility options and feedback elements found in later Assassin's Creed titles, like Valhalla," says Antony Marques, UX designer at Ubisoft Bordeaux. "To achieve this, we collaborated with teams in Montreal, Kyiv, Odesa, and Bordeaux. OpenAI Could Make Custom Chips to Power Next-Generation AI Models
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and the GPT-4 large language model, is reportedly exploring the possibility of creating custom silicon to power its next-generation AI models. According to Reuters, Insider sources have even alluded to the firm evaluating potential acquisitions of chip design firms. While a final decision is yet to be cemented, conversations from as early as last year highlighted OpenAI's struggle with the growing scarcity and escalating costs of AI chips, with NVIDIA being its primary supplier. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has been rather vocal about the shortage of GPUs, a sector predominantly monopolized by NVIDIA, which holds control over an astounding 80% of the global market for AI-optimized chips.
Back in 2020, OpenAI banked on a colossal supercomputer crafted by Microsoft, a significant investor in OpenAI, which harnesses the power of 10,000 NVIDIA GPUs. This setup is instrumental in driving the operations of ChatGPT, which, as per Bernstein's analyst Stacy Rasgon, comes with its own hefty price tag. Each interaction with ChatGPT is estimated to cost around 4 cents. Drawing a comparative scale with Google search, if ChatGPT queries ever burgeoned to a mere tenth of Google's search volume, the initial GPU investment would skyrocket to an overwhelming $48.1 billion, with a recurring annual expenditure of approximately $16 billion for sustained operations. For an invitation to comment, OpenAI declined to provide any statements. The potential entry into the world of custom silicon signals a strategic move towards greater self-reliance and cost optimization so further development of AI can be sustained.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Intel Lunar Lake Processor Appears in SiSoftware Sandra Benchmark
Intel's next-generation Lunar Lake processor has appeared in the SiSoftware Sandra benchmarking suite, and the online database has revealed many details, thanks to a spotting by @Olrak29 of X/Twitter. Considering Intel's Meteor Lake is still two months away from its launch, the presence of Lunar Lake's benchmarks is indeed intriguing. Interestingly, Intel showcased a Lunar Lake laptop at the Intel Innovation 2023 event, and this SiSoft entry might be related to that demo. The data from SiSoft details the system as a "Genuine Inte l(R) 0000 1.00 GHz (5M 20c 3.91 GHz + 2.61 GHz, 3.3 GHz IMC, 4x 2.5 MB + 4 MB L2, 2x 8 MB L3)," hinting at a "Lunar Lake Client System (Intel LNL-M LP5 RVP1)." Deciphering these details, the Lunar Lake system adopts a 4+4 core configuration, utilizing a mix of Lion Cove and Skymont architecture cores tailored for performance and efficiency.
Moreover, the benchmark report pegs this CPU as a low-power laptop variant with a 17 W TDP. While it operates at a 1.0 GHz base frequency, it reached a speed of 3.91 GHz during the testing. However, these numbers should be taken cautiously since it's likely an engineering sample. Cache details are outlined, suggesting a 2.5 MB L2 cache per P-core, an added 4 MB L2 cache for E-cores, and a 16 MB L3 cache. No details on the integrated GPU were revealed, although it's anticipated that Lunar Lake will house Intel's Xe2-LPG graphics and LPDDR5 system memory. Intel has shared that Lunar Lake is scheduled for a 2024 release in mobile/laptop devices, targeting performance-per-watt leadership. Arrow Lake processors, catering to desktops, might share the core architecture and are anticipated to launch around the same timeframe.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Samsung and TSMC Reportedly Struggling with 3 nm Yields
According to Korean business news publication ChosunBiz, both Samsung and TSMC are struggling with their 3 nm node yields. The two companies have different approaches to their 3 nm nodes, with Samsung using GAA FET (Gate All Around), whereas TSMC is continuing with its FinFET technology. That said, TSMC has at least five known 3 nm nodes, of which two should be in production by now, assuming N3E has proved to be reliable enough to kick off. Samsung on the other hand has three known 3 nm nodes, with only one in production so far, called 3GAE.
ChosunBiz reports that neither company is getting the kind of yields that you'd expect from a node that should have been in volume production for around a year by now, with Samsung apparently being somewhat better than TSMC. At 60 and 50 percent respectively, neither Samsung nor TSMC are anywhere near decent yields. Anything below 70 percent is considered very poor and even the 60 percent claim in Samsungs case, is apparently limited to some kind of Chinese mining ASIC and doesn't include the SRAM you find in most modern processors. ChosunBiz also mentions a source familiar with Samsung's foundry business who mentions a yield closer to 50 percent for the company. The same source also mentions that Samsung needs to reach at least 70 percent yield to be able to attract major customers to its 3 nm node.[Only registered and activated users can see links. (PR) HP Announces the Envy Move 23.8 inch All-in-One PC.
The adage that a person's home is their castle has never been truer than today. Our home is our sanctuary, our getaway, a place where we can relax. But it's also so much more than that. It has become a place where we work, where we exercise and as a gamer, where I play.
Like most people, my typical day starts in the kitchen with a cup of coffee. I often move out to the patio overlooking the yard and answer a few early morning messages before heading to my home office. If I'm lucky, I can take a brain break around lunch and watch a quick episode of my latest binge. After work, I'll grab my yoga mat for a quick workout in spare room, followed by a video chat with my good friend in Taiwan from the living room. And as my friend tells me, she seeks quiet refuge for our chat anywhere in the house where the kids aren't blasting out their latest hip hop tunes. Then I try to close the day by chilling out in the comfort of my bedroom for a quick check of my next day's calendar and urgent emails.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Microsoft to Unveil Custom AI Chips to Fight NVIDIA's Monopoly
According to sources close to The Information, Microsoft is supposed to unveil details about its upcoming custom silicon design for accelerating AI workloads. Allegedly, the incoming chip announcement is scheduled for November during Microsoft's annual Ignite conference. Held in Seattle from November 14 to 17, the conference is supposed to show all of the work that the company has been doing in the field of AI. The alleged launch of an AI chip will undoubtedly take center stage in the announcement, as the demand for AI accelerators has been so great that companies can't get their hands on GPUs. The sector is mainly dominated by NVIDIA, with its H100 and A100 GPUs powering most of the AI infrastructure worldwide.
With the launch of a custom AI chip codenamed Athena, Microsoft hopes to match or beat the performance of NVIDIA's offerings and reduce the cost of AI infrastructure. As the price of H100 GPU can get up to 30,000 US Dollars, building a data center filled with H100s can cost hundreds of millions. The cost could be winded down using homemade chips, and Microsoft could be less dependent on NVIDIA to provide the backbone of AI servers needed in the coming years. Nevertheless, we are excited to see what the company has prepared, and we will report on the Microsoft Ignite announcement in November.[Only registered and activated users can see links.
(PR) Global Notebook Market to Rebound in 2024, Projected Yearly Shipment Growth of 2-5%
TrendForce reports that the second quarter revealed notebook inventory channels displaying healthy levels. Both North America and Asia-Pacific regions are demonstrating a healthy appetite for mid and low-tier consumer models. This isn't just a race to restock; it's a strategic move to gear up for the anticipated back-to-school wave in the third quarter. And here's the zinger—just as Google prepped to roll out its licensing fees, Chromebook shipments hit a peak. This surge propelled Q2 notebook shipments to 42.52 million units, marking a 21.6% quarterly leap. However, a look at the overall picture reveals a total of 77.5 million units shipped in the first half of the year—down 23.5% YoY.
TrendForce further points out that for 2H23, growth momentum is anchored in the purchasing power of end consumers. However, with the economic outlook of the two major notebook markets—the US and Europe—shrouded in uncertainty, the typical seasonal purchasing demand is muted. What's more, some of this demand was already met in Q2. As a result, Q3 notebook shipments are forecast to witness a moderate growth of 3.8%, tallying up to 44.13 million units. Annual notebook shipments are projected to hit 163 million units, marking a YoY decline of 12.2%.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]

Intel Launches Arc A580 Graphics Card for 1080p AAA Gaming at $179
Intel today launched the Arc A580 "Alchemist" desktop graphics card, with general availability across both the prebuilt and DIY retail channels. The card starts at a price of USD $179.99. The A580 targets the lower-end of the mid-range, and is targeted at AAA gaming at 1080p with medium-thru-high settings. The card fully meets DirectX 12 Ultimate feature-requirements, and is based on the Xe HPG "Alchemist" graphics architecture that powers the current Arc A750 and A770.
The new A580 has a lot in common with the Arc 7-series, as it is based on the same 6 nm ACM-G10 (aka DGX-512) silicon that powers them. Intel carved out this SKU by enabling 24 out of 32 Xe Cores, across 6 out of 8 Render Slices. This results in 384 execution units, or 3,072 unified shaders, 384 XMX AI acceleration cores, 24 Ray Tracing engines, 192 TMUs, and 96 ROPs. Perhaps the best aspect of the A580 is its memory sub-system that's been carried over from the A750—you get 8 GB of 16 Gbps GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit memory bus, yielding a segment-best 512 GB/s memory bandwidth. Intel claims that the Arc A580 should provide performance highly competitive to the GeForce RTX 3050, but there's more to this, do check out our reviews.

AMD Ryzen X3D Processors Popular, Make a Quarter of Respondents: TPU F
AMD Ryzen processors with 3D Vertical Cache technology, denoted with the X3D brand extension on processor model numbers, are surprisingly popular, with close to a quarter of respondents to a TechPowerUp Frontpage Poll question saying that they use one. In August, we asked our readers if they use a Ryzen X3D processor. The question was "Are you using an AMD Ryzen X3D CPU with 3D V-Cache?" This was a quarter into the launch of the Ryzen 7000X3D processor series that restored the gaming performance leadership for AMD against Intel's 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" processors.
Since the poll went live in August, we've seen 31,862 responses. From these, 14,732, or 46.2% say that they use a classic Ryzen processor (one without 3D V-cache). followed by 9,780 or 30.7% saying they use an Intel processor; an impressive 4,316 or 13.5% saying they use a Socket AM4 Ryzen 5000X3D series processor (5800X3D or 5600X3D); followed by 3,034 or 9.5% saying they use the latest 7000X3D series "Zen 4" processors. The X3D series together make 7,350 votes, or 23%.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]

(PR) Q4 DRAM Contract Prices Set to Rise, with Estimated Quarterly Increase of 3-8%
TrendForce reports indicate a universal price increase for both DRAM and NAND Flash starting in the fourth quarter. DRAM prices, for instance, are projected to see a quarterly surge of about 3-8%. Whether this upward momentum can be sustained will hinge on the suppliers' steadfastness in maintaining production cuts and the degree of resurgence in actual demand, with the general-purpose server market being a critical determinant.
PC DRAM: DDR5 prices, having already surged in the third quarter, are expected to maintain their upward trajectory, fueled by the stocking of new CPU models. This forthcoming price hike cycle for both DDR4 and DDR5 is incentivizing PC OEMs to proceed with purchases. Although manufacturers still have substantial inventory and there's no imminent shortage, Samsung has been nudged to further slash its production. However, facing negative gross margins on DRAM products, most manufacturers are resistant to further price reductions, instead pushing for aggressive increases. This stance sets the stage for an anticipated rise in DDR4 prices by 0-5% and DDR5 prices by around 3-8% in the fourth quarter. Overall, as DDR5 adoption accelerates, an approximate 3-8% quarterly increase is projected for PC DRAM contract prices during this period.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Fujitsu Details Monaka: 150-core Armv9 CPU for AI and Data Center
Ever since the creation of A64FX for the Fugaku supercomputer, Fujitsu has been plotting the development of next-generation CPU design for accelerating AI and general-purpose HPC workloads in the data center. Codenamed [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...], the CPU is the latest creation for TSMC's 2 nm semiconductor manufacturing node. Based on Armv9-A ISA, the CPU will feature up to 150 cores with Scalable Vector Extensions 2 (SVE2), so it can process a wide variety of vector data sets in parallel. Using a 3D chiplet design, the 150 cores will be split into different dies and placed alongside SRAM and I/O controller. The current width of the SVE2 implementation is unknown.
The CPU is designed to support DDR5 memory and PCIe 6.0 connection for attaching storage and other accelerators. To bring cache coherency among application-specific accelerators, CXL 3.0 is present as well. Interestingly, Monaka is planned to arrive in FY2027, which starts in 2026 on January 1st. The CPU will supposedly use air cooling, meaning the design aims for power efficiency. Additionally, it is essential to note that Monaka is not a processor that will power the post-Fugaku supercomputer. The post-Fugaku supercomputer will use post-Monaka design, likely iterating on the design principles that Monaka uses and refining them for the launch of the post-Fugaku supercomputer scheduled for 2030. Below are the slides from Fujitsu's presentation, in Japenese, which highlight the design goals of the CPU.[Only registered and activated users can see links.
