Samsung Delays V9 QLC NAND Production to H1 2026 Amid Performance Issu
Samsung is running into some unexpected issues with its ninth-generation NAND flash memory technology. The tech giant has been forced to delay full-scale production of its V9 QLC NAND chips until at least the first half of 2026, according to industry reports from ZDNet. Samsung's V9 NAND uses a 280-layer design that first hit mass production back in April 2024. The company started with TLC (triple-level cell) versions that pack 1 TB of storage, then moved on to the [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] (quad-level cell) variants by September last year. But here's where things went sideways. Multiple industry insiders tell ZDNet that those first batches of V9 QLC chips had some fundamental design problems that caused performance issues.
What makes this particularly frustrating for Samsung is that while they still dominate the broader NAND market, they're actually lagging behind when it comes to QLC technology specifically. Their top-tier QLC products are still stuck using older V7 generation technology - they never even bothered releasing a QLC version of their V8 chips. Samsung did show off its next-generation V10-class TLC NAND back in February, boasting [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] and 1 TB capacity. However, they haven't said when we'll actually see these chips in production. Meanwhile, the competition isn't sitting still. (PR) AMD Introduces EPYC Embedded 4005 Processors for Low-Latency Appl
AMD today announced the EPYC Embedded 4005 Series processors, purpose-built to address rising demand for real-time compute performance, optimized system costs and extended deployment lifecycles in network security appliances and entry-level industrial edge servers. Built on proven AMD server technology, AMD EPYC Embedded 4005 Series processors have been designed with features that address the unique demands of applications requiring low latency, efficient design, longevity, and affordability. This scalable processor family delivers leadership performance-per-watt with advanced security and connectivity features, high frequency cores with large L3 cache, and extended product lifecycles.
The high-performance AMD "Zen 5" x86 architecture integrates up to 16 cores and 32 threads in a compact 4 nm chiplet design. This processor is tailored to maximize multi-thread performance and simplify software development, enabling quicker time to market. The device features high clock speeds and up to 128 MB of L3 cache enabling lightning-fast data management and is performance-optimized for latency-sensitive tasks like network packet processing, and industrial real-time control systems. It also supports the AVX-512 instruction set with a 512b data path that optimizes efficiency and performance for AI inference workloads. The configurable 65 W-170 W thermal design power (TDP) range allows customers to balance performance and efficiency for their specific embedded use cases, such as next-generation firewalls (NGFWs).[Only registered and activated users can see links. SK Hynix DDR5 DIMMs Vulnerable to "Phoenix" Rowhammer Attack, ECC DIMM
Researchers from ETH Zurich and Google have shown that SK Hynix DDR5 modules remain vulnerable to a new Rowhammer variant they call Phoenix (CVE-2025-6202), even with on-die ECC memory modules. The attack can be executed in only 109 seconds, making it a very realistic threat. By reverse engineering the built-in DRAM mitigation (TRR) for the already existing Rowhammer exploit, the team found a blind spot in the refresh-sampling logic: the mitigation's sampling period repeats every 128 tREFI intervals and, within those intervals, the first two of four sub-intervals are "lightly sampled." Leveraging this, the researchers crafted two novel long-running hammer patterns: a shorter 128-tREFI pattern and a much longer 2608-tREFI pattern. They later coupled them with a new self-correcting refresh synchronization method that realigns the attack whenever a refresh is missed. This synchronization is what lets Phoenix maintain alignment across thousands of refresh intervals, something prior routines like [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] could not do reliably.
On 15 SK Hynix DDR5 modules, manufactured between late 2021 and late 2024, every module flipped bits under one of the two patterns. The 128-tREFI pattern was about 2.62× more effective on average. The team observed thousands of bit flips per DIMM and turned those flips into real-world primitives: page-table corruption, yielding arbitrary read/write access, extraction of valuable RSA-2048 keys from co-located VMs in many cases, and local privilege escalation by corrupting the sudo binary on some DIMMs. To increase the probability of hitting a vulnerable refresh offset (only 2 of 128 offsets are vulnerable, which is 1.56%), they run four shifted pattern instances across each of the four banks in parallel, boosting the hit probability by 16× to roughly 25%.[Only registered and activated users can see links. Microsoft to Force-Install Copilot on Most Windows PCs This October
Microsoft will force-install the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows PCs that already have Microsoft 365 desktop applications, the company said, with a phased rollout beginning in October 2025 and expected to finish by mid-November. The installation will be applied globally outside the European Economic Area and the Copilot app will be added to the Start menu and enabled by default, though visibility may vary depending on an individual system's configuration. Microsoft advised IT administrators to prepare support teams and notify users ahead of the change to reduce confusion and help desk volume. Organizations can prevent automatic installation by changing the setting in the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center under Device Configuration, but most personal users who manage their own machines will lack a straightforward opt-out pathway.
Admins can disable the automatic installation setting in the Apps admin center to preserve existing deployment policies and image configurations immediately available. The forced-installation move is Microsoft's way of forcing its own AI solution across its productivity suite, following recent integrations of Copilot features into Edge and subscription tiers that expanded access to paid AI tools. Centralizing Copilot could lower the barrier to entry for users who could need prompt-driven assistance inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, potentially speeding up repetitive tasks. For those opposed, practical solutions include removing the app post-installation, altering startup behavior, or avoiding Microsoft 365 services, though each option has trade-offs.[Only registered and activated users can see links.
