Today, 2K and Gearbox Software announced that Borderlands 4, the definitive looter-shooter and latest entry in the genre-defining Borderlands franchise, is now available worldwide for PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The University of Osaka D3 Center will begin trial operations of the "Osaka University Compute and sTOrage Platform Urging open Science" (OCTOPUS), a computational and data platform promoting open science built by NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701), starting this September, with full-scale operations commencing in December.

OCTOPUS is a supercomputer with a theoretical computational performance of 2.293 petaflops, centered around 140 computing nodes of the "NEC LX201Ein-1". Compared to the previous system, it not only offers approximately 1.5 times the performance, but also incorporates a provenance management function, which automatically records and manages processes such as data generation, jointly developed by both parties. Even as we thought Intel had moved on from its older-generation CPUs, surprises still arise. Intel's five-year-old "Comet Lake" designs remain in circulation, as evidenced by the latest addition to the Intel Ark database. As noted by @momomo_us, Intel has introduced a curious Core i5-110 processor, a 6-core, 12-thread CPU built on Intel's well-known 14 nm+++ node, paired with UHD Graphics 630. With a TDP of 65 Watts, the CPU features a base clock of 2.9 GHz and a maximum turbo frequency of 4.3 GHz. These specifications match the Core i5-10400, which has the same core and clock configuration based on the Comet Lake microarchitecture, suggesting a refresh.

With an MSRP of $200, it's questionable whether this "value" purchase offers any real-world advantage, considering that more modern processors are available at the same price point. However, for LGA1200 users currently using lower-tier i3 processors, this might be a sensible upgrade. For anyone else building a DIY PC, the value proposition is lacking. However, MSRP and street pricing typically deviate quite noticeably, so take it with a grain of salt. Current Core Ultra 5 200S series "Arrow Lake" CPUs start at $236 MSRP, but real-world deals on Amazon and other retailers show prices below $180. According to the developer behind MSI Afterburner, Alexey Nicolaychuk, MSI is testing an overclocking upgrade arriving in a new beta and aimed at setting up the stage for a new MSI RTX 50-series Extreme OC SKU. Called triple-channel voltage control, the feature adds memory and auxiliary (MSVDD) voltage adjustments alongside core voltage tuning, and it exposes direct PWM access with an extended ±100 mV window on compatible designs. MSI is working on new GPU engineering samples that expose the MP2988 and MP29816A PWM controllers, providing VRM telemetry, allowing the utility to adjust voltages and monitor VRM temperature. However, these capabilities rely on board firmware and hardware choices. NVIDIA's Founders Edition designs lock I2C access on reference cards, so the functionality will initially be limited to upcoming custom MSI Extreme OC cards, which will allow controller access.

Memory voltage control is the most significant change, as many workloads are memory-bound and benefit as much from GDDR tuning as from higher GPU clocks. With access to the memory rail, MSI's boards could support higher memory clocks and improved stability under aggressive timings, boosting bandwidth-sensitive benchmarks and some games. Core voltage is more flexible via direct PWM, yet GPU boost logic, thermals and silicon variance will still cap practical gains for most users. These Extreme OC designs require more robust VRMs and cooling, as well as improved power delivery. Extreme overclockers using custom cooling will likely extract the biggest wins, while mainstream users should be cautious of warranty and stability tradeoffs when experimenting.
