Romanian cable looks to consolidate

'' Romania’s cable industry should see some consolidation in 2010, with the smallest operators likely to be the main take-over targets.

Speaking to ZF, Digital Cable Systems (DCS) general manager Dinu Malacopol estimates that there are several hundred such small, largely cash-strapped operators accounting for a combined total of over 700,000 subscribers, or some 20% of the market.

The leading players in the Romanian cable market are RCS/RDS and UPC, with 1.4 million and 1.1 million subscribers respectively, while DCS, which is backed by AIG, has over 200,000.

DCS, which has projected revenue growth of 10% in TV services and 30% in internet for this year, expects to be actively engaged in acquisitions this year. ''
