About a month ago, we reported about the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D "Zen 5" processor with 3D V-Cache that is flying off the shelves, with scalpers trying to make a profit (https://www.techpowerup.com/328586/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d-stocks-vaporized-in-retail-being-scalped) from buying the retail inventory. The processor continues to face widespread availability issues more than a month after its launch, though the company assures consumers that relief is on the horizon. "We are working diligently to get as much supply to market as possible, with more processors being shipped every week," an AMD spokesperson told Tom's Hardware. "We expect availability to get better as shipments ramp throughout the quarter." The CPU is not only hard to find but also proves to be one of the most sought-after processors on Amazon (https://www.techpowerup.com/328932/amd-achieves-top-10-best-selling-and-most-sought-after-cpus-on-amazon).

The supply shortage has created opportunities for scalpers, who are listing the processor at prices reaching $1,000—more than double its retail price. Even established retailers like Walmart have listed the chip at inflated prices, approaching $800. Adding to consumers' challenges, some third-party sellers have posted fraudulent listings, making it crucial for buyers to verify seller credibility. While major retailers like Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy, and B&H Photo maintain the official $479 price point when in stock, securing a unit at this price has proven challenging for most consumers. As the holiday season is here, AMD's promised production ramp-up is much needed, as gamers have been planning their upgrade months in advance and are in dire need of pushing the performance of their systems up another notch.https://tpucdn.com/img/GxFjqhQAIvmirIUv_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/GxFjqhQAIvmirIUv.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/VfHME9xWQLRzAA8g_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/VfHME9xWQLRzAA8g.jpg)

A few days ago, we published a report about Intel's 18A yields being at an abysmal 10% (https://www.techpowerup.com/329513/intel-18a-process-node-clocks-an-abysmal-10-yield-report). This sparked quite a lot of discussion among the tech community, as well as responses from industry analysts and Intel's now ex-CEO Pat Gelsinger (https://x.com/PGelsinger/with_replies). Today, we are diving into known information about Intel's 18A node and checking out what the yields of possible products could be, using tools such as Die Yield Calculator from SemiAnalysis (https://semianalysis.com/die-yield-calculator/). First, we know that the defect rate of the 18A node is 0.4 defects per cm². This information is from August, and up-to-date defect rates could be much lower, especially since semiconductor nodes tend to evolve even when they are production-ready. To measure yields, manufacturers use various yield models based on the information they have, like the aforementioned 0.4 defect density. Expressed in defects per square centimeter (def/cm²), it measures manufacturing process quality by quantifying the average number of defects present in each unit area of a semiconductor wafer.

Measuring yields is a complex task. Manufacturers design some smaller chips for mobile and some bigger chips for HPC tasks. Thus, these two would have different yields, as bigger chips require more silicon area and are more prone to defects. Smaller mobile chips occupy less silicon area, and defects occurring on the wafer often yield more usable chips than wasted silicon. Stating that a node only yields x% of usable chips is only one side of the story, as the size of the test production chip is not known. For example, NVIDIA's H100 die is measuring at 814 mm²—a size that is pushing modern manufacturing to its limits. The size of a modern photomask, the actual pattern mask used in printing the design of a chip to silicon wafer, is only 858 mm² (26x33 mm). Thus, that is the limit before exceeding the mask and needing a redesign. At that size, nodes are yielding much less usable chips than something like a 100 mm² mobile chip, where defects don't wreak havoc on the yield curve.https://tpucdn.com/img/1Sf9X3gQO4uTQRga_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/1Sf9X3gQO4uTQRga.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/Al5qeE7cM5QOPQwD_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Al5qeE7cM5QOPQwD.jpg)

The gaming performance of Intel's latest Core Ultra 200-series "Arrow Lake-S" desktop processors missed the mark by quite a bit (https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-ultra-9-285k/19.html), ending up slower than the 14th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" processors. Adding pressure to Intel is AMD's recent launch of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which extends the company's leadership in gaming performance, ending up to 12% faster (https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d/18.html) than the top Core Ultra 9 285K at gaming (1080p). The company then announced that it has identified possible reasons why gaming performance of "Arrow Lake" ended up below expectations, and that it's working on a microcode-level update to the processor.

A discussion in the ASUS ROG Forums sheds light on what this microcode update could be. Allegedly, it's called the Intel 0x114 Microcode Update, and you can expect it soon in a beta UEFI firmware update from ASUS and other motherboard vendors, which makes it possible that we see a public release of the microcode either by yearend, or in Q1-2025. There's still no word on the extent of gaming performance gain from this microcode, but if we were to speculate, Intel wouldn't bother with such an update if it didn't at least bring "Arrow Lake" to the same gaming performance level as "Raptor Lake," if not higher.https://tpucdn.com/img/JQE9K2kWEpWs1pNy_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/JQE9K2kWEpWs1pNy.jpg)

According to the reputable German publication ComputerBase, ViewSonic is preparing to launch an absolute unit of a gaming monitor at CES 2025, which is scheduled to take place in January of next year. The monitor is expected to sport an OLED panel, along with a peak refresh rate of a whopping 520 Hz. The product is also rumored to boast a resolution of 2560 x 1440, which should allow for decent pixel density considering its 27-inch size.

Like many other monitors available currently on the market, yet another unnamed ViewSonic OLED monitor will also boast dual-mode capabilities. Simply put, the monitor will give its user the option to toggle between a high-refresh rate mode with lower resolution, and a high-resolution mode, likely 4K, but with a lower refresh rate. No other details are known at this point, so interested folks will have to wait till next month to know more.https://tpucdn.com/img/oDFVIAUZ9634RGLn_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/oDFVIAUZ9634RGLn.jpg)

iFixit, the company known for publishing tear-down guides and repairability ratings as well as selling official spare parts and components for various electronics brands, has added Microsoft's Xbox consoles to its growing range of official spares. The repair advocacy company today announced in a blog post that Xbox Series X and Series S spares will now be available through iFixit, replete with DIY repair guides for all the spares sold on the online shop. As is typical of iFixit, the goal—aside from the obvious profit motives—is to promote right to repair and DIY repair in order to keep electronics in service for longer, reducing the amount of e-waste that ends up on the trash heap.

The official iFixit Xbox partnership will include both the disc and digital-only versions of the Series consoles, and the parts list is quite extensive, including everything from big-ticket items, like the motherboard assembly and built-in power supply to less obvious things, like the rubber feet and Wi-Fi modules. Xbox controller spares are also available in the Microsoft Repair Hub (https://www.ifixit.com/collaborations/microsoft), and the list of controller spares looks comprehensive, too. Curiously, iFixit will offer both Microsoft's official Series X/S replacement joysticks and Gulikit TMR Electromagnetic joystick modules, which are a drift-resistant upgrade to the stock joysticks.https://tpucdn.com/img/nnwwO7IojQ5N5uHr_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/nnwwO7IojQ5N5uHr.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/OsuRpYuujiHcZihx_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/OsuRpYuujiHcZihx.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/LAuzN1bHmrOlCXjc_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/LAuzN1bHmrOlCXjc.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/YUMkZotnrqhy9HNt_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/YUMkZotnrqhy9HNt.jpg)

It's no secret that 2024 hasn't been kind to live-service games, with recent months seeing games like XDefiant (https://www.techpowerup.com/329464/ubisoft-shuts-down-xdefiant-after-f2p-fpss-disappointing-short-run) and Concord shut down (https://www.techpowerup.com/326398/concords-unprecedentedly-fast-failure)—although not always without reason—so it's a bit refreshing to see the recently released Marvel Rivals hit what can only be described as a home run. Not only is the game already at "Mostly Positive" in terms of Steam reviews, the free-to-play hero shooter also managed to draw in massive amounts of players in its first week on Steam. According to SteamDB, Marvel Rivals peaked at 444,286 concurrent players a mere two and a half hours after its launch on Friday, December 6.

The game launched on the same day as Path of Exile 2 (https://www.techpowerup.com/329592/path-of-exile-2-becomes-victim-of-its-own-success-as-450-000-players-overwhelm-servers), which had an equally successful launch, despite its Early Access fee and some serious technical hiccups along the way. These two games have not been the norm, although Marvel Rivals signals that gaming properties based on Marvel characters may have finally found their audience. In previous years, both Marvel's Midnight Suns and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (https://www.techpowerup.com/review/marvel-s-guardians-of-the-galaxy-fsr-2-0-community-patch/) made their own impacts, scoring big with both reviewers and audiences. Of course, neither of the aforementioned games garnered quite the player count as Marvel Rivals, but that's likely simply due to the free-to-play nature of Rivals.https://tpucdn.com/img/H8NN9IOBu7yYb7mr_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/H8NN9IOBu7yYb7mr.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/S1ANrZgZICg9IBp4_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/S1ANrZgZICg9IBp4.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/9h8g1Jr5lICIZUoW_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/9h8g1Jr5lICIZUoW.jpg)

Path of Exile 2 today released in Early Access on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2694490/Path_of_Exile_2/) and consoles, and, despite the game's $29.99 Early Access pricing, it has already managed to amass a peak player count of over 458,920 players on Steam alone. While this is undoubtedly good news for the developer and publisher, the increased server load has apparently already caused problems, resulting in excessive queue times to get into game sessions. At the time of writing, the game has only been available to play for a little over four hours, and the player count is only beginning to plateau now.

According to the Path of Exile X account, the development team has been hard at work trying to stem the bleeding, as it were. So far, the Path of Exile website has been down several times due to the high traffic, preventing players from claiming their Steam keys. Additionally, and somewhat hilariously, this outage has also affected the "Early Access Live Updates" site that was meant to be a resource for gamers to keep track of work the live service team was doing to try and deal with the high launch-day volumes.https://tpucdn.com/img/kJH3jqLNjuIMPTZZ_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/kJH3jqLNjuIMPTZZ.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/D3BZok4aShATFvrl_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/D3BZok4aShATFvrl.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/W3hZxA0K7JuYagIa_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/W3hZxA0K7JuYagIa.jpg)

It's no secret that Ubisoft hasn't had the best year, with the gaming giant having had to shut down multiple live-service and single-player games this year as a result of disappointing player counts and sales figures. Now, according to a series of rumors, Ubisoft is in talks with Chinese conglomerate Tencent with the intention of a buy-out. Curiously, though, Yves Guillemot, who currently sits as CEO of Ubisoft, wants to sell at least some of the Guillemot family's shares to Tencent, effectively giving Tencent a controlling stake in Ubisoft, but the Guillemot family wants to do so without losing control of the company it helped found.

According to Reuters, inside sources claim that the Guillemot family, who are the founding shareholders and currently have a controlling stake in Ubisoft, would like to maintain a controlling position in the company after whatever potential buyout deal is being discussed. Apparently, the Guillemot Family's desire for continued control has thus far been a sticking point for Tencent, who has as yet opted not increase its stake in the French game developer and publisher, instead holding out for a more favorable deal. Tencent already has around a 10% stake in Ubisoft, but the inside sources claim that Tencent wants greater control over the company before agreeing to a buyout of Guillemot shares.https://tpucdn.com/img/AxKKwHnlUbwuGzdz_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/AxKKwHnlUbwuGzdz.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/ZtBavMo06T78Kubl_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ZtBavMo06T78Kubl.jpg)

The RPCS3 team has announced the successful implementation of arm64 architecture support for their PlayStation 3 emulator. This development enables the popular emulator to run on a broader range of devices, including Apple Silicon machines, Windows-on-Arm, and even some smaller Arm-based SBC systems like the Raspberry Pi 5. The journey to arm64 support began in late 2021, following the release of Apple's M1 processors, with initial efforts focused on Linux platforms. After overcoming numerous technical hurdles, the development team, led by core developer Nekotekina and graphics specialist kd-11, achieved a working implementation by mid-2024. One of the primary challenges involved adapting the emulator's just-in-time (JIT) compiler for arm64 systems.

The team developed a solution using LLVM's intermediate representation (IR) transformer, which allows the emulator to generate code once for x86-64 and then transform it for arm64 platforms. This approach eliminated the need to maintain separate codebases for different architectures. A particular technical challenge emerged from the difference in memory management between x86 and arm64 systems. While the PlayStation 3 and traditional x86 systems use 4 KB memory pages (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_(computer_memory)), modern arm64 platforms typically operate with 16 KB pages. Though this larger page size can improve memory performance in native applications, it presented unique challenges for emulating the PS3's graphics systems, particularly when handling smaller textures and buffers. While the emulator now runs on arm64 devices, performance varies significantly depending on the hardware. Simple applications and homebrew software show promising results, but more demanding commercial games may require substantial computational power beyond what current affordable Arm devices can provide.https://tpucdn.com/img/TSTRLHZaA7hbSDIw_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/TSTRLHZaA7hbSDIw.jpg)

Fujitsu has previewed its next-generation Monaka processor, a 144-core powerhouse for data center. Satoshi Matsuoka of the RIKEN Center for Computational Science showcased the mechanical sample on social media platform X. The Monaka processor is developed in collaboration with Broadcom (https://www.techpowerup.com/329531/broadcom-delivers-industrys-first-3-5d-f2f-technology-for-ai-xpus) and employs an innovative 3.5D eXtreme Dimension System-in-Package architecture featuring four 36-core chiplets manufactured using TSMC's N2 process. These chiplets are stacked face-to-face with SRAM tiles through hybrid copper bonding, utilizing TSMC's N5 process for the cache layer. A distinguishing feature of the Monaka design is its approach to memory architecture. Rather than incorporating HBM, Fujitsu has opted for pure cache dies below compute logic in combination with DDR5 DRAM compatibility, potentially leveraging advanced modules like MR-DIMM and MCR-DIMM.

The processor's I/O die supports cutting-edge interfaces, including DDR5 memory, PCIe 6.0, and CXL 3.0 for seamless integration with modern data center infrastructure. Security in the design is taken care of with the implementation of Armv9-A's Confidential Computing Architecture for enhanced workload isolation. Fujitsu has set ambitious goals for the Monaka processor. The company aims to achieve twice the energy efficiency of current x86 processors by 2027 while maintaining air cooling capabilities. The processor aims to do AI and HPC with the Arm SVE 2 support, which enables vector lengths up to 2048 bits. Scheduled for release during Fujitsu's fiscal year 2027 (April 2026 to March 2027), the Monaka processor is shaping up as a competitor to AMD's EPYC and Intel's Xeon processors.https://tpucdn.com/img/ZCdk9QV4mofO7eMl_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ZCdk9QV4mofO7eMl.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/M0LElyY2mHkUfBEB_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/M0LElyY2mHkUfBEB.jpg)

Hyper Light Breaker, the sequel to the massively popular indie hit, Hyper Light Drifter, is set to release on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1534840/Hyper_Light_Breaker/) on January 15, 2025. The only catch is that the game will release into early access, meaning it will likely change significantly during its first year on the market. At launch, Hyper Light Breaker will cost $29.99.

While Hyper Light Breaker shares a name with and hits a lot of the same aesthetic notes as Hyper Light Drifter, it isn't exactly a sequel in the classical sense. Hyper Light Breaker is set "decades before" the events of Hyper Light Drifter, and the aesthetic looks like an upgraded version of the hyper stylized 3D graphics we saw from Heart Machine in Solar Ash, as opposed to the top-down 2D pixel art of Hyper Light Drifter. Unlike Solar Ash, though, the core gameplay loop will rely on rogue-lite mechanics and hack and slash combat, making it a unique entry in the Hyper Light universe. Additionally, Hyper Light Breaker will be a co-op game, with support for up to three players in a squad.https://tpucdn.com/img/OFAsBpNHU50REc59_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/OFAsBpNHU50REc59.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/EnKZ9JIaNHZiZC7u_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/EnKZ9JIaNHZiZC7u.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/5XhvQxWdxObFsofI_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/5XhvQxWdxObFsofI.jpg)

We recently reported on the overwhelmingly negative response (https://www.techpowerup.com/329695/dauntless-steam-launch-causes-uproar-after-massive-gameplay-and-monetization-changes-and-progress-reset) from the Dauntless community after the game's latest Awakening update and Steam launch. Now, Jessie Leigh Gagnon, a former Phoenix Labs developer and the former associate producer for Dauntless, has also weighed in on the current state of the game and the changes introduced by the indie developer. According to Gagnon's post on LinkedIn, the creative team that birthed Dauntless and maintained it before Phoenix Labs's dark times "never would have made decisions that are so blatantly not player focused." She seemingly attributes the disastrous Steam launch and poor decision-making that led to the maligned update to the studio's new ownership.

According to Gagnon's description, when Dauntless was first launched, Phoenix Labs was an indie studio in the true sense. It was a group of passionate developers who simply wanted to create something fun. In this case a Monster Hunter-like game that wasn't locked to the Nintendo DS and didn't force its players to deal with "aching hands, cumbersome inventory management, and a lore that wasn't super approachable." Since then, though, Phoenix Labs has been through the wringer and lost much of its original creative talent and many of its former executives, supposedly all culminating in a game that seems to have put monetization before all else.https://tpucdn.com/img/vZsWoQAds6GozSbi_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/vZsWoQAds6GozSbi.jpg)
