Nintendo's next-generation Switch 2 handheld gaming console is nearing its release. As leaks intensify about its future specifications, we get information about its planning stages. According to Moore's Law is Dead YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qlOQg2mEsw), we learn that Nintendo didn't choose AMD APU to be the powerhouse behind Switch 2 due to poor battery life. In a bid to secure the best chip at a mere five watts of power, the Japanese company had two choices: NVIDIA Tegra or AMD APU. With some preliminary testing and evaluation, AMD APU wasn't reportedly power-efficient at 5 Watt TDP, while the NVIDIA Tegra chip was maintaining sufficient battery life and performance at target specifications.
Allegedly the AMD APU was good for 15 W design, but Nintendo didn't want to place a bigger battery so that the device remains lighter and cheaper. The final design will likely carry a battery with a 20 Wh capacity, which will be the main power source behind the NVIDIA Tegra T239 SoC. As a reminder, the Tegra T239 SoC (https://www.techpowerup.com/313564/nintendo-switch-2-to-feature-nvidia-ampere-gpu-with-dlss?cp=3) features eight-core Arm A78C cluster with modified NVIDIA Ampere cores in combination with DLSS, featuring some of the latest encoding/decoding elements from Ada Lovelace, like AV1. There are likely 1536 CUDA cores paired with 128-bit LPDDR5 memory running at 102 GB/s bandwidth. For final specifications, we have to wait for the official launch, but with rumors starting to intensify, we can expect to see it relatively soon.https://tpucdn.com/img/Fvd9p0KcQmYQkrIF_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Fvd9p0KcQmYQkrIF.jpg)

Gaming giant Valve appears to be venturing into uncharted territory. Recent findings on SteamDB have revealed that the company may be working on integrating ARM architecture and Android app support into its ecosystem. A mysterious application, codenamed "ValveTestApp3043620," has been spotted with an update that includes interesting changes. The update features new tags for several popular games, including Left 4 Dead 2, Garry's Mod, and Kerbal Space Program. These tags, such as "proton-arm64" and "proton-arm64e," indicate that Valve is testing a version of Proton specifically designed for ARM64-based systems. Proton, Valve's brainchild developed in partnership with CodeWeavers, is the magic behind running Windows games on Linux systems. By extending this technology to ARM64, Valve could be paving the way for PC gaming on portable Arm-based devices, potentially signaling a new hardware strategy.
The plot thickens with mentions of "proton_experimental" and "proton-arm64ec-vanguard" in the changelog, hinting at ongoing tests and experimental builds. Additionally, references to Waydroid, a tool enabling Android apps on Linux, suggest that Valve's ambitions may extend beyond gaming, possibly aiming to broaden software accessibility of its platform. This development has sparked speculation about the possibility of Steam games running on Android smartphones and tablets or even a possible Arm-powered version of the Steam Deck. However, a more likely scenario could be testing for Windows support on Arm-based chips. The timing of these experiments aligns with recent announcements of laptops featuring Qualcomm's ARM64-based Snapdragon X CPUs. These devices can run Windows-based games through Microsoft and Qualcomm's emulation layer, Prism. If Valve's Proton can provide superior performance or more stable emulation for Windows-based games on Arm devices, it could position itself as a strong competitor to Prism.https://tpucdn.com/img/3vCgHCLZ3qi4NDdL_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/3vCgHCLZ3qi4NDdL.jpg)

A new vulnerability was recently discovered in a widely used print server that is installed by default on many Linux and Unix-based systems with a graphical user interface. The primary attack vector for the vulnerability is the CUPS (Common Unit Printing System) print scheduler, specifically cups-browsed, and has the potential to execute code remotely with zero user interaction required.
The vulnerability has reportedly been given a CVSS score of 9.9 by RHEL and Canonical, although this score is hotly debated, with some arguing it should have a lower score, because, although code can be remotely downloaded to the system, it cannot be executed without user intervention. Fortunately, there is no evidence of the vulnerability having been exploited, although the disclosure was leaked online (https://gist.github.com/stong/c8847ef27910ae344a7b5408d9840ee1) ahead of a planned private reveal in October, prompting the developer that discovered the vulnerability to post the full explanation in a write-up on their blog (https://www.evilsocket.net/2024/09/26/Attacking-UNIX-systems-via-CUPS-Part-I/). This being the case, the vulnerability could very well start being exploited by malicious actors.https://tpucdn.com/img/Lkw1xLWF5BHjofL6_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Lkw1xLWF5BHjofL6.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/1CAIXB7vDXSLrLxT_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/1CAIXB7vDXSLrLxT.jpg)

Today Microsoft published an extensive blog post about the controversial Recall feature that was intended to launch with Copilot+ enabled Windows 11 PCs. To recap on Recall: Recall was announced as a service that creates and stores 'snapshots' of the user's activity on their PC, and uses the neural processing hardware within a Copilot+ certified machine to filter search requests by the user in order to find what they had previously seen. In effect, it took constant screenshots and would index the contents of those screenshots to assist with vague search queries. Saw a very funny picture in Discord a week ago and can't find it but can describe what it looked like? Search Recall and with the power of neural processing it would sift through its index of stored screenshots and attempt to provide you the exact image you described. Or, you could scroll back through the gallery of snapshots yourself to find what you wanted.
The idea of a program or service running in the background taking screenshots of your activity every few seconds yielded some pretty unsavory reactions from just about everyone. To assuage privacy concerns Microsoft did release an update in June (https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2024/06/07/update-on-the-recall-preview-feature-for-copilot-pcs/) committing to a broad set of security improvements to Recall before the preview would be available to test. This latest blog post titled, "Update on Recall security and privacy architecture", outlines more improvements on top of those announced back in June.https://tpucdn.com/img/Rd5BoLcrmPalqLJx_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Rd5BoLcrmPalqLJx.jpg)

Valve's latest third-person MOBA-like hero shooter, Deadlock, has had a pretty serious cheater problem (https://www.techpowerup.com/326460/cheaters-ruin-valves-deadlock-before-new-arena-shooter-even-launches-despite-harsh-punishments?cp=2), despite still being an invite-only public test. While the game has thus far operated on a player reporting system to identify and punish cheaters, a recent game patch has introduced a rather comical—and seemingly effective—anti-cheat system that can either ban cheating players or turn them into frogs until the end of the match.
Valve says that the new anti-cheat system is set up to be fairly conservative at the moment to avoid any false positives. Aside from the new anti-cheat, Deadlock's September 26 update introduced a new hero, Mirage, whose design and gameplay seem rooted in the jinn from Arabic myths (aka djinn or genie) and added a pretty vast collection of gameplay updates, balances, and quality-of-life improvements throughout the game.https://tpucdn.com/img/vAMz7EtqcQQwdLMP_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/vAMz7EtqcQQwdLMP.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/eMRPodclKWsxG8BY_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/eMRPodclKWsxG8BY.jpg)

Intel's recent financial woes have brought the company into severe cost-cutting measures, including job cuts and project delays. However, a silver lining remains—Intel is reportedly in the final stages of securing $8.5 billion in direct funding from the US government under the CHIPS Act, delivered by the end of the year. The potential financing comes at a crucial time for Intel, which has been grappling with financial challenges. The company reported a $1.6 billion loss in the second quarter of 2024, leading to short-term setbacks. However, thanks to sources close to the Financial Times, we learn that Intel's funding target will represent the CHIPS Act's largest share, leading to a massive boost to US-based semiconductor manufacturing.
Looking ahead, the potential CHIPS Act funding could serve as a catalyst for Intel's resurgence, reassuring both investors and customers about the company's future. A key element of Intel's recovery strategy lies in the ramp-up of production for its advanced 18A node, which should become the primary revenue driver for its foundry unit. This advancement, coupled with the anticipated government backing, positions Intel to potentially capture market share from established players like TSMC and Samsung. The company has already secured high-profile customers such as Amazon and (allegedly) Broadcom, hinting at its growing appeal in the foundry space. Moreover, Intel's enhanced domestic manufacturing capabilities align well with potential US government mandates for companies like NVIDIA and Apple to produce processors locally, a consideration driven by escalating geopolitical tensions.https://tpucdn.com/img/TAc8JeHAufnkK8E2_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/TAc8JeHAufnkK8E2.jpg)

Earlier this week, we got rumors that AMD is rushing in the Ryzen 7 9800X3D 8-core/16-thread "Zen 5" processor with 3D V-cache for a late-October debut (https://www.techpowerup.com/326978/amd-rushing-in-ryzen-7-9800x3d-expect-product-launch-late-october). The 9800X3D succeeds the popular 7800X3D, and AMD probably hopes it will have a competitive gaming processor in time for Intel's Core Ultra 2-series "Arrow Lake-S" launch. In the previous article, it was reported that the higher core-count 9000X3D series processor models, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D, would arrive some time in Q1 2025, because it was reported that the chips have certain "new features" compared to their predecessors, the 7950X3D and 7900X3D. At the time, we even explored the possibility of AMD giving both 8-core CCDs on the processor 3D V-cache. Turns out, this is where things are headed.
A new report by Benchlife.info claims that the higher core-count 9950X3D and 9900X3D will implement 3D V-cache on both CCD chiplets, giving these processors an impressive 192 MB of L3 cache (96 MB per CCD), and 208 MB or 204 MB of "total cache" (L2+L3). The report also says that AMD is planning a Ryzen 5 9600X3D chip, its second attempt at taking on Intel's Core i5 lineup, following its very recent release of the Ryzen 5 7600X3D, which ended up 1-3% short of the Core i5-14600K in gaming workloads. There's no word on whether the 9600X3D will launch in October alongside the 9800X3D, or in Q1-2025 with the Ryzen 9 9000X3D series.https://tpucdn.com/img/ZmyOtzYRdYNoX0TI_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ZmyOtzYRdYNoX0TI.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/DbTrPyQ1NzysUCbb_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/DbTrPyQ1NzysUCbb.jpg)

Intel today released the latest version of the Arc GPU Graphics drivers. Version 101.6079 Beta comes with optimization for EA FC25, Throne and Liberty, and Delta Force. The installer download size of these drivers are "temporarily increased" in size (from around 400 MB to over 800 MB), as these are the first drivers to include support for the Arc Xe2 "Battlemage" integrated graphics of Core Ultra 200V "Lunar Lake" processors, indicating that Intel will soon retire driver payload for older iGPUs such as 11th Gen "Tiger Lake." There are no fixed issues with this release, but the company identified a few new issues as listed below.

Apple recently launched (https://www.techpowerup.com/326455/apple-debuts-the-iphone-16-pro-and-iphone-16-pro-max-now-with-a-camera-button?cp=2) the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max with the company's new A18 Pro SoC, and in its presentation, Apple claimed the new SoC offered up to 20% faster gaming performance than the previous generation. While this may be true in certain scenarios, recent testing in Alien Isolation has revealed that the A18 Pro's GPU still has some shortcomings when it comes to gaming.
According to the tests run by MrMacRightPlus, the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max is barely able to maintain 30 FPS in Alien Isolation when running at its native 2868×1320 pixel resolution. While Alien Isolation is a AAA title that was ported to the iPhone, it is still a 10-year-old game, meaning it should be fairly easy to run. Lowering the in-game resolution, however, results in a substantial improvement to the A18 Pro's performance, with the game reaching 60 FPS after the change. This 30 FPS limitation may not all be down to a lack of performance from the A18 Pro SoC, though.https://tpucdn.com/img/5rrkTKU9Pr1f6RwN_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/5rrkTKU9Pr1f6RwN.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/Z6ZPGmqDKaTqg0j8_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Z6ZPGmqDKaTqg0j8.jpg)

PC Watch recently got hands-on with Shanghai Zhaoxin's latest desktop processor for some in depth testing and published a less than optimistic review comparing it to both the previous generation KX-U6780A and Intel's equally clocked budget quad-core offering from 2017, the 3.6 GHz Core i3-8100. Though Zhaoxin's latest could muscle its way through some multithreaded tests such as Cinebench R23 due to having twice the core count, the single core performance showed to be nearly half that of the i3 in everything from synthetic tests to gaming.
PC Watch tested with the Dragon Quest X Benchmark, a DX9.0c title, to put the spotlight on single core gaming performance even in older games as well as with Final Fantasy XIV running the latest Golden Legacy benchmark released back in April of this year to show off more modern multithreaded gaming. With AMD's RX 6400 handling graphics at 1080p the KX-7000/8 scored around 60% of the i3-8100 in Dragon Quest X, and in Final Fantasy XIV it scored 90% of the i3. The result in Final Fantasy XIV was considered, "somewhat comfortable" for gameplay but still less than optimal. As a comparison point for a modern budget gaming PC option the Ryzen 5 5600G was also included in testing, where in Final Fantasy XIV it was 30% ahead of the KX-7000/8. PC Watch attempted to put the integrated ZX-C1190 to work in games but found that despite supporting modern APIs and features, the performance was no match for the competition.https://tpucdn.com/img/gif7tHhLE1B3Yc7w_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/gif7tHhLE1B3Yc7w.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/qChw4RN0cp1mIn4r_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/qChw4RN0cp1mIn4r.jpg)

Thanks to the renowned NVIDIA hardware leaker kopite7Kimi on X, we are getting information about the final versions of NVIDIA's first upcoming wave of GeForce RTX 50 series "Blackwell" graphics cards. The two leaked GPUs are the GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, which now feature a more significant gap between xx80 and xx90 SKUs. For starters, we have the highest-end GeForce RTX 5090. NVIDIA has decided to use the GB202-300-A1 die and enabled 21,760 FP32 CUDA cores on this top-end model. Accompanying the massive 170 SM GPU configuration, the RTX 5090 has 32 GB of GDDR7 memory on a 512-bit bus, with each GDDR7 die running at 28 Gbps. This translates to 1,568 GB/s memory bandwidth. All of this is confined to a 600 W TGP.
When it comes to the GeForce RTX 5080, NVIDIA has decided to further separate its xx80 and xx90 SKUs. The RTX 5080 has 10,752 FP32 CUDA cores paired with 16 GB of GDDR7 memory on a 256-bit bus. With GDDR7 running at 28 Gbps, the memory bandwidth is also halved at 784 GB/s. This SKU uses a GB203-400-A1 die, which is designed to run within a 400 W TGP power envelope. For reference, the RTX 4090 has 68% more CUDA cores than the RTX 4080. The rumored RTX 5090 has around 102% more CUDA cores than the rumored RTX 5080, which means that NVIDIA is separating its top SKUs even more. We are curious to see at what price point NVIDIA places its upcoming GPUs so that we can compare generational updates and the difference between xx80 and xx90 models and their widened gaps.https://tpucdn.com/img/Jt4L0N3ubaY7vdsv_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Jt4L0N3ubaY7vdsv.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/PV28sXH9fdy0H7jf_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/PV28sXH9fdy0H7jf.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/WdWCelrGv09PFAOc_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/WdWCelrGv09PFAOc.jpg)

Sucker Punch, developer of the wildly popular Ghost of Tsushima, recently announced Ghost of Yōtei as the follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima and confirmed that this is only the beginning of a seemingly expansive franchise. Ghost of Yōtei is the first indirect sequel to Ghost of Tsushima to take place in what Sony calls the Ghost franchise and follows a new character, Atsu, on a quest for revenge in feudal Japan. It will launch on PS5 in 2025, although Sony has yet to reveal a firm release date.
In an interview with The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/24/arts/ghost-of-yotei-tsushima-sequel-playstation.html), Sucker Punch revealed that it had already started planning Ghost of Yōtei as a follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima before the original game was even announced. It also revealed that it had already started working with Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick franchise, on a cinematic adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, and that there are other games coming to the Ghost franchise in the future.https://tpucdn.com/img/RzfSPI3q5VONXY1A_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/RzfSPI3q5VONXY1A.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/Aglyi16MoZVWePeZ_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Aglyi16MoZVWePeZ.jpg)

The Virtual Assistant gives users a leg up when they're using an unfamiliar program or system tool. With a local chat and Q&A feature, even when disconnected from the internet, the Virtual Assistant can help users navigate complicated menus and activate the features and settings they need. For example, if a new user is looking to adjust fan settings, they can request that from the Virtual Assistant, and it will direct them to the appropriate settings menu within the Armoury Crate app. Applications like MyASUS, GlideX, and ProArt Creator Hub are supported, and the chat functionality adds a new layer of support for end users.https://tpucdn.com/img/aeRXfTDPF8xwz0v3_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/aeRXfTDPF8xwz0v3.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/dUxJ3MlyS05h5h1r_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/dUxJ3MlyS05h5h1r.jpg)
