Law firm, Abington Cole + Ellery, is investigating a potential class action lawsuit against Intel due to instability issues in their 13th and 14th Gen CPUs. Intel has acknowledged the problem, stating that elevated operating voltage caused by a microcode algorithm is resulting in instability. While Intel promises a patch, it won't prevent damage already done to affected chips.
Intel has offered to replace damaged CPUs, which could potentially undermine the basis for a lawsuit if the company is honoring this commitment effectively. However, user experiences with Intel's RMA service vary widely, with some reporting smooth replacements and others facing delays or complications. Intel claims to support all affected customers, including those with tray processors, but advises contacting system vendors for pre-built systems.https://tpucdn.com/img/LVGicXEIqtSNEG3I_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/LVGicXEIqtSNEG3I.jpg)

ASUS is betting bigger on game consoles or PCs built like consoles. The company in 2023 introduced the first ROG Z13 Flow, a gaming-grade tablet, powered by a 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" processor and mid-tier RTX 40-series "Ada" discrete mobile GPU. The 2025 ROG Z13 Flow is a 13-inch, 16:10 tablet with an integrated kickstand. You can use it like a handheld with touch controls, or place it on a surface and use conventional gaming peripherals, such as keyboard+mouse, or a game controller. Since the device is meant to provide a AAA gaming experience, it packs some serious kit.
Apparently, the 2025 ASUS ROG Z13 Flow will implement AMD's upcoming "Strix Halo" processor that packs up to 16 "Zen 5" CPU cores, and an oversized iGPU with 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units (2,560 stream processors), and a 256-bit LPDDR5 memory interface, besides a 50 TOPS-class NPU to qualify for Copilot+ AI PC rating. Such a chip would meet the hardware goals of the ROG Z13 Flow, and eliminate the need for a discrete GPU, letting ASUS reduce the mainboard size. The power management of "Strix Halo" would see the CPU and SoC given a roughly 30 W budget, and the iGPU roughly 80 W. Its cooling solution focuses squarely on the "Strix Halo" chip, with no other major chip on the device (the SoC is wired out to serve all chipset functions, no FCH needed).https://tpucdn.com/img/ZKuUyBG0bq1PvXac_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ZKuUyBG0bq1PvXac.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/iNbi2a1NQfqHWjoC_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/iNbi2a1NQfqHWjoC.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/Ku5Pnq8RflLrI9f4_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Ku5Pnq8RflLrI9f4.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/kv4lAdz1AwTXA4gL_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/kv4lAdz1AwTXA4gL.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/AtDx9PwZtJscjYiS_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/AtDx9PwZtJscjYiS.jpg)

Welcome to the first week of August and for those of you living in the Nordics, welcome back to work after a month of holiday. This week's major release is based on a manga that became an anime hit on Netflix that involves bouncy things. No huge releases this week either, but still a pretty solid line-up of new games.

Kingston's NV2 NVMe SSD has been a popular budget choice that has offered some of the best price/performance ratio in its segment of the market. Now, Kingston has quietly added its replacement, the NV3 to its website and that entails a wide range of upgrades over the NV2. The Kingston NV2 came in a range of different variations with multiple different controllers and NAND types and so far the company hasn't revealed which controller or what NAND the NV3 will feature. However, the company lists 3D NAND with a sequential read speeds of 6,000 MB/s for the 1 TB and up SKUs which is a huge improvement over the NV2 which topped out at 3,500 MB/s. Write speeds top out at 5,000 MB/s, but this is limited to the 2 and 4 TB SKUs, but it's nearly twice that of the 2 TB NV2 SKU. The 1 TB SKU is also seeing almost a doubling in terms of write speeds over the NV2. The 500 GB SKU is seeing more modest performance improvements, but it's still getting a decent performance uplift.
Initially, Kingston will launch 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB SKUs, with the 4 TB SKU following in Q4 this year. Endurance remains the same as for the NV2, with the NV3 starting out at 160 TBW for the 500 GB SKU, which then doubles for each increase in size and tops out at 1280 TBW for the 4 TB SKU. Kingston has as yet to officially announce the drive, but some online retailers claim to be able to ship the NV3 in four to five days time, suggesting that the launch is imminent. Pricing appears to start at US$50 for the 500 GB SKU, which increases to US$70 for the 1 TB SKU, with the 2 TB SKU jumping to US$139 from the same retailer. This places the NV3 slightly higher than the current retail price of the NV2, which is hardly a surprise, considering it delivers better performance. All SKUs come with a three year warranty.https://tpucdn.com/img/rerfwhFv7zQOCoV3_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/rerfwhFv7zQOCoV3.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/cI3qsxImDdAWNTNq_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/cI3qsxImDdAWNTNq.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/nRkOOha7jLRIjhbJ_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/nRkOOha7jLRIjhbJ.jpg)

NVIDIA may face delays in releasing its newest artificial intelligence chips due to design issues, according to anonymous sources involved in chip and server hardware production cited by The Information. The delay could extend to three months or more, potentially affecting major customers such as Meta, Google, and Microsoft. An unnamed Microsoft employee and another source claim that NVIDIA has already informed Microsoft about delays affecting the most advanced models in the Blackwell AI chip series. As a result, significant shipments are not expected until the first quarter of 2025.
When approached for comment, an NVIDIA spokesperson did not address communications with customers regarding the delay but stated that "production is on track to ramp" later this year. The Information reports that Microsoft, Google, Amazon Web Services, and Meta declined to comment on the matter, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) did not respond to inquiries.https://tpucdn.com/img/Do2SWjWqNYF32JfT_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Do2SWjWqNYF32JfT.jpg)

The Intel stock on NASDAQ slid 25% as of this writing, on Friday (08/02). This comes in the wake of the company's Q2-2024 quarterly results (https://www.techpowerup.com/325151/intel-reports-q2-2024-financial-results-announces-usd-10-billion-cost-reduction-plan-shares-fall-20) that held the company's profitability below expectations, leading the company to suspend quarterly dividend payouts starting Q4-2024, and engage a slew of measures to cut cost of revenue by over $10 billion. Among other things, this mainly involves downsizing the company across its various business units. Intel tried to keep investor spirits high by posting updates on how its 5N4Y (five silicon fabrication nodes in four years) plan is nearing completion, and how the company is at the cusp of raking in numbers from the AI PC upswing. To this effect, the company is launching its "Lunar Lake" and "Arrow Lake" processors within 2024, to address the various PC sub-segments. The Intel stock isn't churning in a silo, tech stock prices across the industry are witnessing corrections, although few as remarkable as Intel.https://tpucdn.com/img/JVk351mmAvvpXpsN_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/JVk351mmAvvpXpsN.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/nNvNRvFOp1BfWC2N_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/nNvNRvFOp1BfWC2N.jpg)

NVIDIA has reportedly been hit with a US Department of Justice (DOJ) antitrust probe over the tactics the company allegedly employs to sell or lease its AI GPUs and data-center networking equipment, "The Information" reported. Shares of the NVIDIA stock fell 3.6% in the pre-market trading on Friday (08/02). The main complainants behind the probe appear to be a special interest group among the customers of AI GPUs, and not NVIDIA's competitors in the AI GPU industry per se. US Senator Elizabeth Warren and US progressives have been most vocal about calling upon the DOJ to investigate antitrust allegations against NVIDIA.
Meanwhile, US officials are reportedly reaching out to NVIDIA's competitors, including AMD and Intel, to gather information about the complaints. NVIDIA holds 80% of the AI GPU market, while AMD, and to a much lesser extent, Intel, have received spillover demand for AI GPUs. "The Information" report says that the complaint alleges NVIDIA pressured cloud customers to buy "multiple products". We don't know what this means, one theory holds that NVIDIA is getting them to commit to buying multiple generations of products (eg: Ampere, Hopper, and over to Blackwell); while another holds that it's getting them to buy multiple kinds of products, which include not just the AI GPUs, but also NVIDIA's first-party server systems and networking equipment. Yet another theory holds that it is bundle first-party software and services to go with the hardware, far beyond the basic software needed to get the hardware to work.https://tpucdn.com/img/k0VE82Of7JpCiGvB_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/k0VE82Of7JpCiGvB.jpg)
