SK hynix Inc. announced today that it has decided to invest about 9.4 trillion won in building the first fab and business facilities of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster after the board resolution on the 26th. SK hynix designs to start construction of the 1st fab to be built in the Yongin cluster in March next year and complete it in May 2027, and have received an investment approval from the board of directors prior to it. The company will make every effort to build the fab to lay the foundation for the company's future growth and respond to the rapidly increasing demand for AI memory semiconductors.
The Yongin Cluster, which will be built on a 4.15 million square meter site in Wonsam-myeon, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, is currently under site preparation and infrastructure construction. SK hynix has decided to build four state-of-the-art fabs that will produce next-generation semiconductors, and a semiconductor cooperation complex with more than 50 small local companies. After the construction of the 1st fab, the company aims to complete the remaining three fabs sequentially to grow the Yongin Cluster into a "Global AI semiconductor production base."https://tpucdn.com/img/frCE2utkyIM1DxtI_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/frCE2utkyIM1DxtI.jpg)

Team Group today introduced the T-Force GC PRO, its new performance-segment M.2 NVMe Gen 5 SSD. The new T-Force GC PRO is not to be confused with the T-Force GE PRO (https://www.techpowerup.com/318286/team-group-releases-t-force-ge-pro-nvme-gen-5-ssd) that Team Group launched in January 2024, although the two appear almost identical. The newer GC PRO is powered by the same InnoGrit "Tacoma" IG5666 controller as the GE PRO, but with slightly toned down speeds.
The GC PRO comes in 2 TB and 4 TB capacity variants, with maximum sequential speeds of 12,500 MB/s reads, with 11,000 MB/s writes. For comparison, the flagship GE PRO does 14,000 MB/s max sequential reads, albeit with the same 11,000 MB/s max sequential writes. The GC PRO is hence designed to stike a slightly lower price point which could see it square off against pre-Max14um Phison-powered SSD models. Both the 2 TB and 4 TB models offer identical sequential transfer speeds, but differ with endurance—1,200 TBW and 2,400 TBW, respectively. Although a heatsink is recommended by the manufacturer, the drive comes with a graphene-coated metal-foil heatspreader. The company didn't reveal pricing, the drives are backed by 5-year warranties.https://tpucdn.com/img/ag2p3UeaJps717uq_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ag2p3UeaJps717uq.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/lpSDaJDvFpmTELaI_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/lpSDaJDvFpmTELaI.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/I0mJ8GZeHEHb5kms_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/I0mJ8GZeHEHb5kms.jpg)

Despite the postponement of the Ryzen 9000 launch announced by AMD (https://www.techpowerup.com/324887/amd-delays-launch-of-ryzen-9000-series-processors) on Wednesday, early engineering samples used by motherboard makers reached some users (mainly overclockers). As it is the case with a pre-launch sample of AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 9950X. This CPU is equipped with 16 cores, 32 threads, a base clock frequency of 4.3 GHz with a 5.7 GHz max boost, 80 MB cache (64 MB L3 + 16 MB L2), and a TDP of 170 W.
A user overclocked the 9950X sample to 5.953 GHz using an ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E motherboard equipped with 32 GB DDR5-6000 memory. (Note: There's no information on whether air or water cooling was used.) The user then posted new results in Geekbench 5 and Geekbench 6, which demonstrate impressive performance gains for the 9950X. It's worth noting that AMD also overclocked the processor to 6.6 and even 6.7 GHz, however, they used liquid nitrogen.https://tpucdn.com/img/YRUXt9L6Y7dpTw9E_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/YRUXt9L6Y7dpTw9E.jpg)

Samsung Electronics' latest high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips have reportedly passed NVIDIA's suitability tests, according to Reuters. This development comes two months after initial reports suggested the chips had failed due to heat and power consumption issues. Despite this approval, NVIDIA plans to use Samsung's memory chips only in its H20 GPUs, a less advanced version of the H100 processors designed for the Chinese market to comply with US export restrictions.
The future of Samsung's HBM3 chips in NVIDIA's other GPU models remains uncertain, with potential additional testing required. Reuters also reported that Samsung's upcoming fifth-generation HBM3E chips are still undergoing NVIDIA's evaluation process. When approached for comment, neither company responded to Reuters. It's worth noting that Samsung previously denied the initial claims of chip failure.https://tpucdn.com/img/CK7nauxZ0UeUVqcC_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/CK7nauxZ0UeUVqcC.jpg)

NVIDIA may be working on a new RTX 3050 A laptop GPU using an AD106 (Ada Lovelace) die, moving away from the Ampere chips used in other RTX 30-series GPUs. While not officially announced, the GPU is included in NVIDIA's latest driver release and the PCI ID database as GeForce RTX 3050 A Laptop GPU. The AD106 die choice is notable, as it has more transistors and CUDA cores than the GA107 in current RTX 3050s and the AD107 in RTX 4050 laptops. The AD106, used in RTX 4060 Ti desktop and RTX 4070 laptop GPUs, boasts 22.9 billion transistors and 4,608 CUDA cores, compared to GA107's 8.7 billion transistors and 2,560 CUDA cores, and AD107's 18.9 billion transistors and 3,072 CUDA cores.
While this could potentially improve performance, it's likely that NVIDIA will use a cut-down version of the AD106 chip for the RTX 3050 A. The exact specifications and features, such as support for DLSS 3, remain unknown. The use of TSMC's 4N node in AD106, instead of Samsung's 8N node used in Ampere, could potentially improve power efficiency and battery life. The performance of the RTX 3050 A compared to existing RTX 3050 and RTX 4050 laptops remains to be seen, however, the RTX 3050 A will likely perform similarly to existing Ampere-based parts as NVIDIA tends to use similar names for comparable performance levels. It's unclear if NVIDIA will bring this GPU to market, but adding new SKUs late in a product's lifespan isn't unprecedented.https://tpucdn.com/img/JtbjoyYoBwZowVBB_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/JtbjoyYoBwZowVBB.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/3M5Hpu4sCT4wIFWQ_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/3M5Hpu4sCT4wIFWQ.jpg)

AMD has unveiled its latest processor, the Ryzen 8040H. This new model boasts 8 Zen 4 cores and full RDNA3 graphics with 12 Compute Units. Notably, it lacks the AMD XDNA processor, confirming earlier rumors of a mobile SKU without a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Contrary to speculation, the 8040H's specifications differ from the Ryzen 8845HS. The new chip has a boost clock of 4.9 GHz, 200 MHz lower than its predecessor. Graphics performance has also been slightly reduced, with the 12 Compute Units clocked at 2.6 GHz, down from 2.7 GHz in the 8845H.
The Lenovo XiaoXin 14 Pro is the first laptop to feature this new APU, priced at 5499 RMB ($768) with 24 GB of memory. For comparison, a similar model with the 8845H and 32 GB of memory is priced at 5599 RMB ($773), suggesting only a marginal price difference between the two configurations.https://tpucdn.com/img/D91pcVA29vvYSq7N_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/D91pcVA29vvYSq7N.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/b9uC46IMnwB9qwgh_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/b9uC46IMnwB9qwgh.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/9WW3HJB8A1qG3Yu1_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/9WW3HJB8A1qG3Yu1.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/f5UhNzAh9pKORD9K_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/f5UhNzAh9pKORD9K.jpg)

To date, WiFi 7 routers have been costing hundreds of dollars, with high-end models going for as much as US$800 for standard routers, with mesh systems easily breaking the US$1000 barrier. TP-Link's new Archer BE3600—also known as the Archer BE230 in some markets—is the polar opposite to those expensive routers, as it's being sold for a mere US$99. We've even found it for less than that in some countries, although we've also seen the BE230 model for twice as much, so the pricing varies quite a lot depending on where you live. You might be wondering how much router you get for your money, since there has to be some trade-offs, right?
Well, you wouldn't be wrong, but there are fewer trade-offs than we expected. As the model name implies, the combined WiFi speed is 3600 Mbps in theory, with the 5 GHz radio delivering up to 2882 Mbps and the 2.4 GHz radio delivering up to 688 Mbps. Both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios are 2x2, but at least the 5 GHz radio supports up to 240 MHz channel width, although 160 MHz is far more common on the device side. However, there's no 6 GHz radio to be found at this price, which isn't entirely unexpected at this price point. However, new features like Multi-Link Operation (MLO) are supported. You also get a pair of 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports, something only routers at around twice the price of the Archer BE3600 has featured so far. There's even a USB 3.0 for those that want to connect up a storage device to their router as a makeshift network drive. According to a teardown done by the FCC, the Archer BE3600 is based on a Broadcom SoC with integrated WiFi and a Realtek switch for the Gigabit ports.https://tpucdn.com/img/W0u0dTG25G5igw4S_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/W0u0dTG25G5igw4S.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/ueCOa0KTNUWQp84x_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ueCOa0KTNUWQp84x.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/VDNLfZxHT7U9BYid_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/VDNLfZxHT7U9BYid.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/UxbGb4RaAuOmr9cz_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/UxbGb4RaAuOmr9cz.jpg)

The Windows 11 "patch Tuesday" update for July 2024 breaks Bitlocker drive encryption, Microsoft notes in its issue discovery. The company releases monthly major update packages for Windows, timing them on every second Tuesday of the month. The July 2024 update carries the knowledge-base identifier KB5040442, and applies to Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2. Bitlocker is a first-party disk encryption feature by Microsoft that's included with Windows 10 Pro, Windows 11 Pro, and Windows 11 Enterprise editions. You are prompted a disk decryption password at every system startup, the disk remains encrypted until either password is input, or a Bitlocker Recovery process is followed.
The KB5040442 causes Bitlocker to forget its own password, forcing you to clear the Bitlocker Recovery process. When you encrypt a volume with Bitlocker, you are given a recovery key that you're supposed to safekeep. Those with online Microsoft accounts have the option to get Microsoft to store their recovery keys, so they could log into their Microsoft account on another device (like a phone), and access the stored recovery key, which they then manually input on the borked machine to create a new Bitlocker password. Microsoft acknowledges that Bitlocker recovery is only a workaround, KB5040442 will cause machines to forget their Bitlocker passwords, and force a recovery. The company is working on an update that fixes this, so if you have an always-on machine with Bitlocker that just got patched to KB5040442, you might want to keep the recovery key handy.https://tpucdn.com/img/cM2A58UtebvOkPE6_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/cM2A58UtebvOkPE6.jpg)

AMD today released the Ryzen Chipset Drivers 6.07.22.037 WHQL. The drivers are essential for notebooks powered by the latest Ryzen AI 300 series "Strix Point" processors, as they add driver support for the various SoC interfaces of the chip. The drivers are also needed to expose the NPU of Ryzen 7000 "Phoenix," Ryzen 8000 "Hawk Point," Ryzen 8000G desktop APUs, and Ryzen AI 300 "Strix Point" processors as a classified device in the Windows Device Manager, as well as give Windows 11 the ability to read out the NPU in the Task Manager, so you can look for things there such as real-time NPU utilization, memory footprint, and driver version. The driver package also updates the drivers of the various components, including GPIO, PSP, PPM, USB4 host controller, etc. It also adds program support for various interfaces of the SoC, including SMBus, Hetero, and RCEC. Grab the drivers from the link below.

AMD Ryzen 9000 series "Granite Ridge" desktop processors were supposed to start selling on July 31, 2024, but the launch has since been delayed (https://www.techpowerup.com/324887/amd-delays-launch-of-ryzen-9000-series-processors). Since then, social media has been abuzz with theory crafting behind what could be the cause of the delay. AMD's announcement of the delay mentions: "During final checks, we found the initial production units that were shipped to our channel partners did not meet our full quality expectations," causing some to speculate if there are design flaws such as the ones affecting Intel's 13th Gen and 14th Gen Core desktop processors. A picture doing rounds on social media has a more goofy explanation: there is a glaring typo on the product label printed on the integrated heatspreader (IHS) of the processors.
Apparently, some of the first batches of Ryzen 9000 processors see the brand extensions mislabeled. Ryzen 7 9700X is printed as "Ryzen 9 9700X." This error in the brand extension may have been easily "patched" if it was on the retail packaging (the box), where hardware manufacturers tend to fix typos by simply pasting stickers on them. You can't do this with the IHS, which is a key component of the processor's cooling mechanism. Also, since times immemorial, chip labels (information printed on the chip) have served as crucial last resorts for accuracy of information such as the chip's exact model number, steppings or revisions (if any), and production serial numbers, besides the chip's national origin, which determines the applicable import tariffs. A typo here could prove problematic. We're not entirely sure how AMD is fixing these errors with mere 1-2 week delays. It's likely that they're recalling the affected batch and simply replacing inventory in the channel with "good" batches. The recalled chips will simply have their IHS reprinted.https://tpucdn.com/img/qT10JoslyyamfQ43_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/qT10JoslyyamfQ43.jpg)

As July comes to an end and we enter the month of August, we have a week of mixed releases where the major release appears to be a StarCraft clone of sorts, built by ex Blizzard developers. This is followed by a Diablo-ish game, a No Man's Sky clone of sorts, a game about a data ghost, a Star Wars remake, a very British game and finally a very gooey sequel. August should finally start bringing some bigger releases yet again, after a pretty slow summer of new game releases.
Stormgate (https://playstormgate.com/) / This week's major release / Tuesday 30 July / Early Access
Human defenders and their faithful robot allies stand defiant against two warring alien factions: a race of warlike demonic invaders and their technologically advanced angelic rivals. Together, these three are locked in a relentless struggle for dominance. Crafted by developers renowned for their work on StarCraft II and Warcraft III, Stormgate puts you in command of epic real-time strategy battles. ASRock has silently unveiled the X600TM-ITX, currently the "world's only" AM5 Thin Mini-ITX motherboard designed for AMD Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" processors along with 8000 and 7000 series CPUs with a max TDP of 65 W. Its "Thin" Mini-ITX form factor (17.0 cm x 17.0 cm) stands out with a compact 25 mm I/O shield height compared to the standard 44 mm.
Unlike traditional Mini-ITX boards, the X600TM-ITX utilizes SODIMM memory (max. 96 GB of Dual DDR5 6400+) and supports onboard power supply via one DC Jack on the rear panel I/O, eliminating the need for a separate ATX PSU. This makes it an ideal choice for DIY mini PC enthusiasts. However, the board lacks PCIe slots for discrete GPUs, limiting its gaming potential. Nevertheless, the integrated graphics in AM5 processors should handle most games at lower settings, especially with higher-end CPUs.https://tpucdn.com/img/fGBV6INadeO8eufE_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/fGBV6INadeO8eufE.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/e2hufCe9DxJiXl4Y_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/e2hufCe9DxJiXl4Y.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/V8ckDiCUUJ7NjAiF_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/V8ckDiCUUJ7NjAiF.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/lDKAoWojDAi6nl6W_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/lDKAoWojDAi6nl6W.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/bDctK9j0bdO371sk_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/bDctK9j0bdO371sk.jpg)

With the PhaseSheet PTM, Thermal Grizzly Holding GmbH presents an electrically non-conductive thermal pad based on a phase change material (PCM). With PhaseSheet PTM, Thermal Grizzly closes the gap between traditional thermal paste and thermal pads based on graphene or carbon thermal pads. This means that the respective advantages in terms of application and thermal conductivity can be combined in one product.
PhaseSheet PTM is a thermal pad that has been optimized for applications where maintenance cycles are subject to long intervals. It is more durable than traditional thermal conductive pastes, but not as durable as KryoSheet, for example, which is virtually maintenance-free. The maximum thermal conductivity of PhaseSheet PTM develops and stabilizes after around ten thermal cycles above 60 degrees Celsius.https://tpucdn.com/img/PYKGEkp6EKMJwfzZ_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/PYKGEkp6EKMJwfzZ.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/uPyiTruRELGPimt7_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/uPyiTruRELGPimt7.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/UMnbeZvJRcIZNES6_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/UMnbeZvJRcIZNES6.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/Jbt7YPraGk8cnaQx_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Jbt7YPraGk8cnaQx.jpg)

It's official, Intel will not issue a recall for its failing 13th and 14th gen CPUs, despite the problem being much bigger than initially thought. The company was approached by The Verge and the answers to the questions asked, are not looking great. First of all, it appears that at least all 65 W or higher base power Intel 13th and 14th gen CPUs are affected—regardless of SKU and lettering—by the so-called elevated Voltage issue. To be clear, it doesn't mean all these CPUs will start to fail and Intel claims that its microcode update will solve the issue for CPUs that haven't shown any signs of stability issues. However, Intel is not promising that the microcode update will solve the stability issues of CPUs that are experiencing problems, but rather state that "It is possible the patch will provide some instability improvements", but it's asking those with stability issues to contact customer support. The patch is on the other hand expected to solve it for new CPUs, but that doesn't help those that are already experiencing stability issues.
Intel does appear to be swapping out degraded chips, but there's no guarantee that the replacement CPUs will come with the microcode update installed, as Intel is only starting to apply it to products that are currently being produced. The company has also asked all of its OEM partners to apply the update before shipping out new products, but this isn't likely to happen until sometime in early to mid-August according to Intel. It's also unclear when BIOS/UEFI updates will be available for end users from the motherboard manufacturers, since this is the only way to install the microcode update as a consumer. Intel has not gone on record to say if it'll extend the warranty of the affected products, nor did the company provide any details about what kind of information consumers have to provide to their customer support to be able to RMA a faulty CPU. Intel will not halt sales of the affected CPUs either, which means that if you're planning to or are in the middle of building a system using said CPUs, you might want to wait with using it, until a BIOS/UEFI with the microcode update in it, is available for your motherboard. There are more details over at The Verge for those that want to read the full questions and answers, but it's clear that Intel isn't considering the issue as anything more than a regular support issue at this point in time.https://tpucdn.com/img/MHIdZo2V2mrIYGdU_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/MHIdZo2V2mrIYGdU.jpg)

Imec, a world-leading research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, today announced the demonstration of high quality 300 mm-Si-based quantum dot spin qubit processing with devices resulting in a statistically relevant, average charge noise of 0.6µeV/√ Hz at 1 Hz. In view of noise performance, the values obtained are the lowest charge noise values achieved on a 300 mm fab-compatible platform.
Such low noise values enable high-fidelity qubit control, as reducing the noise is critical for maintaining quantum coherence and high fidelity control. By demonstrating those values, repeatedly and reproducibly, on a 300 mm Si MOS quantum dot process, this work makes large-scale quantum computers based on Si quantum dots a realistic possibility.https://tpucdn.com/img/XiIdi1FXJFOMItxs_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/XiIdi1FXJFOMItxs.jpg)

According to a report from The Economic Daily (via ITHome (https://m.ithome.com/html/785049.htm)), NVIDIA has reduced the supply of high-end RTX 40 GPUs by up to 50% in preparation for the upcoming RTX 50 Blackwell launch. This supply cut primarily affects NVIDIA's higher-end models, ranging from the RTX 4070 to the RTX 4090, and is intended to free up production capacity for the new Blackwell cards. NVIDIA is likely strategizing to create an ideal market environment, this would typically involve high demand for new products and minimal competition from rivals and its own existing lineup. Consequently, AIB partners like ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte are expected to raise prices on their RTX 40 offerings.
Despite these potential price hikes, most high-end RTX 40 GPUs currently sell at or near their MSRPs. For example, the RTX 4070 is available at $549 on Amazon, alongside the RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER at their respective MSRPs or lower. The RTX 4080 SUPER can be found below its $999 official price, while only the RTX 4090 consistently sells above its $1,599.99 MSRP. Given these circumstances, consumers considering a high-end GeForce GPU purchase might want to act soon, as market conditions for buyers could potentially worsen in the near future.https://tpucdn.com/img/pLuT5TngTqr7szlG_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/pLuT5TngTqr7szlG.jpg)
