Researchers from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Chemnitz, TU Dresden and Forschungszentrum Jülich have been the first to demonstrate that not just individual bits, but entire bit sequences can be stored in cylindrical domains: tiny, cylindrical areas measuring just around 100 nanometers. As the team reports in the journal Advanced Electronic Materials, these findings could pave the way for novel types of data storage and sensors, including even magnetic variants of neural networks.

"A cylindrical domain, which we physicists also call a bubble domain, is a tiny, cylindrical area in a thin magnetic layer. Its spins, the electrons' intrinsic angular momentum that generates the magnetic moment in the material, point in a specific direction. This creates a magnetization that differs from the rest of the environment. Imagine a small, cylinder-shaped magnetic bubble floating in a sea of opposite magnetization," says Prof. Olav Hellwig from HZDR's Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research, describing the subject of his research. He and his team are confident that such magnetic structures possess a great potential for spintronic applications.https://tpucdn.com/img/oEinSJiZmEBMCMPD_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/oEinSJiZmEBMCMPD.jpg)

The much-anticipated revolution in AI-powered personal computing seems to be off to a slower start than expected. Qualcomm's Snapdragon X CPUs, touted as game-changers in the AI PC market, have struggled to gain significant traction since their launch. Recent data from PassMark, a popular benchmarking software, reveals that Snapdragon X CPUs account for a mere 0.3% of submissions in the past 30 days. This is a massive contrast to the 99.7% share held by traditional x86 processors from Intel and AMD, which raises questions about the immediate future of ARM-based PCs. The underwhelming adoption comes despite bold predictions from industry leaders. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon had projected (https://www.techpowerup.com/323468/nightmare-fuel-for-intel-arm-ceo-predicts-arm-will-take-over-50-windows-pc-market-share-by-2029) that ARM-based CPUs could capture up to 50% of the Windows PC market by 2029. Similarly, ARM's CEO anticipated a shift away from x86's long-standing dominance.

However, it turns out that these PCs are primarily bought for the battery life (https://www.techpowerup.com/324301/battery-life-is-driving-sales-of-qualcomm-snapdragon-copilot-pcs-not-ai), not their AI capabilities. Of course, it's premature to declare Arm's Windows venture a failure. The AI PC market is still in its infancy, and upcoming mid-tier laptops featuring Snapdragon X Elite CPUs could boost adoption rates. A lot of time still needs to pass before the volume of these PCs reaches millions of units shipped by x86 makers. The true test will come with the launch of AMD's Ryzen AI 300 and Intel's Lunar Lake CPUs, providing a clearer picture of how ARM-based options compare in AI performance. As the AI PC landscape evolves, Qualcomm faces mounting pressure. NVIDIA's anticipated entry (https://www.techpowerup.com/322704/qualcomms-success-with-windows-ai-pc-drawing-nvidia-back-to-the-client-soc-business) into the market and significant performance improvements in next-generation x86 processors from Intel and AMD pose a massive challenge. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether Snapdragon X CPUs can live up to their initial hype and carve out a significant place in the AI PC ecosystem.https://tpucdn.com/img/6Bv5lD9Rdu2PHLY5_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/6Bv5lD9Rdu2PHLY5.jpg)

In a surprising development, Intel plans to extend the longevity of its Socket LGA1700 platform even as the newer LGA1851 platform led by the Core Ultra 200 "Arrow Lake" remains on track for a late-Q3/early-Q4 2024 debut. This, according to a sensational leak by Jaykihn. It plans to do this with a brand-new silicon for LGA1700, codenamed "Bartlett." This should particularly interest gamers for what's on offer. Imagine the "Raptor Lake-S" die, but with four additional P-cores replacing the four E-core clusters, making a 12-core pure P-core processor—that's "Bartlett." At this point we're not sure which P-core is in use—whether it's the current "Raptor Cove," or whether an attempt will be made by Intel to backport a variant of "Lion Cove" to LGA1700.

This wouldn't be the first pure P-core client processor from Intel after its pivot to heterogeneous multicore—the "Alder Lake" H0 die has six "Golden Cove" P-cores, and lacks any E-core clusters. Intel is planning to give launch an entire new "generation" of processor SKUs for LGA1700 which use the newer client processor nomenclature by Intel, which is Core 200-series, but without the "Ultra" brand extension. There will be SKUs in the Core 3, Core 5, Core 7, and Core 9 brand extensions. Some of these will be Hybrid, and based on the rehashed "Raptor Lake-S" 8P+16E silicon, and some "Alder Lake-S" 8P+8E; but "Bartlett" will be distinctly branded within the series, probably using a letter next to the numerical portion of the processor model number. There will not be any Core 3 series chips based on "Bartlett," but Core 5, Core 7, and Core 9.https://tpucdn.com/img/nvlbTypw4UhhVv3Z_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/nvlbTypw4UhhVv3Z.jpg)

AMD is about give the new "Zen 5" microarchitecture a near-simultaneous launch across both its client segments—desktop and mobile. The desktop front is held by the Ryzen 9000 "Granite Ridge" Socket AM5 processors; while Ryzen AI 300 "Strix Point" powers the company's crucial effort to capture Microsoft Copilot+ AI PC market share. We recently did a technical deep-dive (https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-zen-5-technical-deep-dive/) on the two. HardwareLuxx.de scored two important bits of specs for both processors in its Q&A interaction with AMD—die sizes and transistor counts.

To begin with, "Strix Point" is a monolithic silicon, which is confirmed to be built on the TSMC N4P foundry node (4 nm). This is a slight upgrade over the N4 node that the company built its previous generation "Phoenix" and "Hawk Point" processors on. The "Strix Point" silicon measures 232.5 mm² in area, which is significantly larger than the 178 mm² of "Hawk Point" and "Phoenix." The added die area comes from there being 12 CPU cores instead of 8, and 16 iGPU compute units instead of 12; and a larger NPU. There are many other factors, such as the larger 24 MB CPU L3 cache; and the sizes of the "Zen 5" and "Zen 5c" cores themselves.https://tpucdn.com/img/o44jm7kB5I63twCA_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/o44jm7kB5I63twCA.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/ACqJwqeoR83fwoc2_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ACqJwqeoR83fwoc2.jpg)

All models come with full modular cabling, and all of them—including the 750 W model—come with 600 W-capable 12V-2x6 connectors.

Under the hood, the Phanteks AMP GH comes with a single +12 V rail design, with active PFC, DC-to-DC switching, and most common electrical protections. A 120 mm fan with hydraulic bearing, is used to keep the PSU cool. This fan is programmed with 0 RPM mode, which lets the PSU shut the fan off below a load threshold, with the temperature permitting. The PSU body is just 14 cm long, which should come in handy with today's mid-tower cases. Available now on Overclockers UK, the 1000 W model ranges between £129 to £139; the 850 W model between £104 to £114; and the 750 W model between £85 and £95.https://tpucdn.com/img/QxAEwyJ752pfTXMJ_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/QxAEwyJ752pfTXMJ.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/LAzvt0dpeDWdodmp_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/LAzvt0dpeDWdodmp.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/Y4a207RswNuCaoVb_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Y4a207RswNuCaoVb.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/B6Ymie3yi58MTbhF_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/B6Ymie3yi58MTbhF.jpg)

Western Digital stealthily introduced a spacious 8 TB variant of its performance WD Black SN850X M.2 NVMe Gen 4 SSD. The drive debuted in 2022 and had topped off at 4 TB. The new 8 TB variant is priced at $849 for the bare drive (without heatsink, model number WDS800T2X0E), and $899 with the PS5-friendly heatsink (model: WDS800T2XHE). The drive combines an in-house controller by Western Digital, with KIOXIA-sourced 3D TLC NAND flash. We're not sure if it's using the same 112-layer BiCS5 that the 4 TB variant does.

Western Digital claims performance figures of up to 7200 MB/s sequential reads, up to 6600 MB/s sequential writes, and up to 1.2 million IOPS 4K random reads/writes. The read speed is a touch lesser than the 7300 MB/s max sequential reads of the 4 TB variant. The write endurance of the 8 TB variant is rated at an impressive 4,800 TBW. Built in the M.2-2280 form-factor the drive takes advantage of the PCI-Express 4.0 x4 interface. Western Digital is backing these drives with 5-year warranties.https://tpucdn.com/img/GO773AGdXAcmCdmd_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/GO773AGdXAcmCdmd.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/wg7nCkOhsHVdowvN_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/wg7nCkOhsHVdowvN.jpg)

OPENEDGES Technology, Inc the leading provider of memory subsystem IP, is pleased to announce that its subsidiary, The Six Semiconductor Inc (TSS), has successfully brought-up and validated its HBM3 testchip in 7 nm process technology. The IP validation testchip and the HBM3 PHY were brought up within the first month to 6.4 Gbps, and further tuning has resulted in successful operation of the HBM3 memory subsystem overclocked to 7.2 Gbps.

To date, there are only a handful of IP vendors that have taped out and demonstrated HBM3 memory subsystems, as test shuttle and HBM3 DRAM die stack sample availability are both highly limited. OPENEDGES is thrilled to be amongst one of the few companies to have demonstrated an HBM3 memory subsystem in silicon.https://tpucdn.com/img/CxPSV4KSX5VVoYa3_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/CxPSV4KSX5VVoYa3.jpg)

NVIDIA today released the latest version of its GeForce software. Version 560.70 WHQL comes Game Ready for Dungeonborne, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, and Stormgate. Besides performance optimization, the driver enables support for DLSS 3 Frame Generation and Reflex for the three games. The drivers add G-SYNC compatibility for 14 new monitor models. The driver also adds support for CUDA 12.6. This release doesn't fix any gaming related bugs but addresses a few with popular content creation apps.

A bug that causes NVENC to ignore quality and bitrate settings for 10-bit encoding, has been fixed. Scaling 10-bit HEVC or AV1 content down below 50% in viewport shows display corruption, which has been fixed. A bug that causes Unity Engine to throw up artifacts when rendering overlapped geometry on an anti-aliased framebuffer, has been fixed. Visual corruption noticed in Source and Program Monitor Previews of Adobe Premiere has been fixed.

Chinese tech company GMKtec is preparing to unveil a new Mini-PC powered by an AMD Ryzen processor, featuring an enhanced cooling system. The company's product lineup already includes a variety of AMD and Intel-based compact computers, with their K-series representing their most powerful offerings. Now, GMKtec teased a new addition to their lineup on Weibo, China's popular social media platform. The upcoming model will support a 70 W TDP and is likely to feature the Ryzen 9 8945HS processor, based on the "R9" mentioned in the post title. This distinction is important as the next-generation processors (Strix Point) use "Ryzen AI 9" branding.

A standout feature of this upcoming model is its vapor chamber cooling system, which is uncommon in the Mini-PC market. However, GMKtec hasn't mentioned the use of a secondary fan or other cooling features, which some competitors employ. The new Mini-PC will include an OCuLink connector for external device compatibility, including graphics cards. Other features include dual 2.5GbE networking, USB ports, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.0 outputs. While full specifications are yet to be disclosed, more details are expected to be revealed in the near future. GMKtec (https://www.gmktec.com/) has not announced a specific release date or price for this new Mini-PC.https://tpucdn.com/img/YcLYDlMp1u4GhobM_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/YcLYDlMp1u4GhobM.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/bCvfCNgVN7LK6PNc_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/bCvfCNgVN7LK6PNc.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/6ybkGLKYuCLT0dXH_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/6ybkGLKYuCLT0dXH.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/vfPkE3qhGT8XZcE6_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/vfPkE3qhGT8XZcE6.jpg)
