In case you missed it, we're about to enter the last week of May and soon summer is here. It's a pretty busy release for new games, even though there are no AAA releases, there are still plenty of interesting new games being released. This week's major release involves not getting sacrificed to the gods. The rest of this weeks' releases range from being the saviour of Persia to being in charge of Titans and that's just the first two releases. This is followed by taking the reins of a martial arts cat, exploring the black priory and racing F1 cars. Hopefully we've managed to cover most bases this week, but there's always next week for those of you that didn't see anything that tickled your fancy.

Soulmask (https://mask.qoolandgames.com/) / This week's major release / Friday 31 May
Soulmask is a sandbox game that prioritizes an authentic survival experience. As the "last one" blessed with the mysterious mask, players will grapple for survival in a primitive land steeped in mysterious faiths, carving out a path to ascendance. Start from nothing, explore, build, recruit tribesmen to fortify your clan, and ultimately unravel the mysterious truths hidden behind the civilizations of this world. Merely two weeks ago, we published (https://www.techpowerup.com/322232/amd-ryzen-ai-9-hx170-surfaces-suggests-new-naming-scheme-for-ultraportable-processors) a story on AMD possibly preparing a new processor naming scheme for its ultraportable segment next-generation processors. Today, various trustful Chinese sources reported that AMD changed its mind again, that the Ryzen AI 100 series naming scheme was dropped, and now we should prepare for the Ryzen AI 300. If this turns out to be true, then AMD Strix Point will launch as Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Ryzen AI 9 365 (assuming AMD does not change the naming scheme again).https://tpucdn.com/img/L5OLuqjodezx151H_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/L5OLuqjodezx151H.jpg)

According to Reuters, NVIDIA is having some major issues with Samsung's HBM3 chips, as NVIDIA hasn't managed to finalise its validations of the chips. Reuters are citing multiple sources that are familiar with the matter and it seems like Samsung is having some serious issues with its HMB3 chips if the sources are correct. Not only do the chips run hot, which itself is a big issue due to NVIDIA already having issues cooling some of its higher-end products, but the power consumption is apparently not where it should be either. Samsung is said to have tried to get its HBM3 and HBM3E parts validated by NVIDIA since sometime in 2023 according to Reuter's sources, which suggests that there have been issues for at least six months, if not longer.

The sources claim there are issues with both the 8- and 12-layer stacks of HMB3E parts from Samsung, suggesting that NVIDIA might only be able to supply parts from Micron and SK Hynix for now, the latter whom has been supplying HBM3 chips to NVIDIA since the middle of 2022 and HBM3E chips since March of this year. It's unclear if this is a production issue at Samsung's DRAM Fabs, a packaging related issue or something else entirely. The Reuter's piece goes on to speculating about Samsung not having had enough time to develop its HBM parts compared its competitors and that it's a rushed product, but Samsung issued a statement to the publication that it's a matter of customising the product for its customer's needs. Samsung also said that it's "the process of optimising its products through close collaboration with customers" without going into which customer(s). Samsung issued a further statement saying that "claims of failing due to heat and power consumption are not true" and that testing was going as expected.https://tpucdn.com/img/8Hoq4jRTd9KzKK0a_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/8Hoq4jRTd9KzKK0a.jpg)

The US Trade Representative (USTR) under Biden administration is preparing to reinstate tariffs on certain technology products imported from China, including GPUs and motherboards. The 25% duties, initially imposed by the Trump administration in 2019 but later suspended, are being revived as part of broader efforts to address concerns over China's economic and trade practices. The tariffs are intended to protect American companies from what the administration describes as unfair Chinese trade actions like intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers that undermine U.S. competitiveness. While no specific effective date was provided, the reinstated tariffs are expected to impact major Chinese computing component suppliers significantly. The revival of the Trump-era tariffs marks a reversal from the previous administration's move to temporarily suspend the duties in 2020 as a goodwill gesture during broader trade negotiations with Beijing.

However, those talks ultimately stalled amid the COVID-19 pandemic and rising bilateral tensions over economic and national security issues. Industry groups have expressed concerns that reviving the tariffs could disrupt tech supply chains, increase costs for U.S. companies and consumers, and potentially invite further Chinese retaliation. The tariffs would apply to GPUs, motherboards and other computing components assembled in China regardless of whether the raw components themselves originated from the country. With tensions already elevated over issues like Taiwan and advanced semiconductor production, the tariff announcement could set the stage for further economic friction between the world's two largest economies absent a negotiated resolution on tech trade.https://tpucdn.com/img/wToVxtvWPWkYFl9T_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/wToVxtvWPWkYFl9T.jpg)

Samsung Foundry business is set to announce its technology roadmap and plans to strengthen the foundry ecosystem at the Foundry and SAFE Forum in Silicon Valley from June 12 to 13. Notably, Samsung is expected to advance its 1 nm process mass production plan, originally scheduled for 2027, to 2026. This move could look like a surprise since recent rumors (denied by Samsung) emerged about HBM3 and HBM3E chips running too hot (https://www.techpowerup.com/322803/nvidia-reportedly-having-issues-with-samsungs-hbm3-chips-running-too-hot) and failing to be validated by NVIDIA.

Previously, Samsung successfully mass-produced the world's first 3 nm wafer foundry in June 2022. The company plans to start mass production of its second-generation 3 nm process in 2024 and 2 nm process in 2025. Speculations suggest Samsung may integrate these nodes and potentially begin mass-producing 2 nm chips as early as the second half of 2024. In comparison, rival TSMC aims to reach the A16 node (1.6 nm) in 2027 and start mass production of its 1.4 nm process around 2027-2028.https://tpucdn.com/img/KdOCFOipvTiW2Dxg_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/KdOCFOipvTiW2Dxg.jpg)

Shopping for a new desktop computer is equal parts gauging its price and determining how much space it'll occupy. A standout candidate is this ECS LIVA mini desktop. It takes up less than five by five inches on your desk and it's only $99.99 (reg. $219). A desktop computer that's small but mighty: This ECS LIVA runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c processor and 4 GB of RAM. You might not be familiar with this type of processor because it was originally intended for testing Snapdragon (ARM) apps on Windows 10 Home 64-bit OS, but its instant-on performance and fanless design are great for users with basic processing needs.

While the ECS LIVA has 64 GB of built-in storage, you could easily add an external hard drive for more space. Though, standard users might not even need to do that. This mini desktop won't even take up five square inches on your desk. Its exact dimensions are 4.69 by 4.59 by 1.38 inches, making it smaller than the Mac minis currently available on Apple's website. Your purchase also includes a minimum 1-year warranty, since this is a brand-new device. Enjoy added peace of mind during your first year of computing.

Grab this appropriately priced and sized ECS LIVA mini box desktop at $99.99 (https://stacksocial.com/sales/ecs-liva-mini-box-qc710-desktop-dhf-01846?utm_source=techpowerup.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ecs-liva-mini-box-qc710-desktop-dhf-01846&utm_term=scsf-595110&utm_content=a0xRn000000vxueIAA&scsonar=1&aid=a-zpm4h3er) (reg. $219) from StackSocial.https://tpucdn.com/img/HkTxZIdL6rUWqVZi_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/HkTxZIdL6rUWqVZi.jpg)

NVIDIA's GeForce "Blackwell" generation of gaming GPUs will stick to being traditional monolithic die chips. The company will not build its next generation of chips as either disaggregated devices, or multi-chip modules. Kopite7kimi, a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks, says that the largest GPU in the generation, the "GB202," is based on a physically monolithic design. The GB202 is expected to power the flagship GeForce RTX 5090 (or RTX 4090 successor), and if NVIDIA sticking to traditional chip design for this, then it's unlikely that smaller GPUs will be any different.

In contrast, AMD started building disaggregated devices with its current RDNA 3 generation, with its top two chips, the "Navi 31" and "Navi 32," being disaggregated chips. An interesting rumor suggests that team red's RDNA 4 generation will see a transition from disaggregated chips to multi-chip modules—packages that contain multiple fully-integrated GPU dies. Back to the green camp, and NVIDIA is expected to use an advanced 4 nm-class node for its GeForce "Blackwell" GPUs.https://tpucdn.com/img/scZyBR1USMVgyjda_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/scZyBR1USMVgyjda.jpg)

Microsoft on Wednesday made the DirectSR API Preview available to game developers through the DirectX GitHub. The API aims to simplify implementation of super-resolution technologies with games. A super-resolution technology renders your game at a lower resolution that your display resolution, and upscales it to your display resolution using intelligent upscalers that attempt to reconstruct details lost to the process. This yields a significant gain in performance from the lower render resolution, and lets you max out game settings—something you could only do if your hardware was up to it. By default, DirectSR provides an upscaling technology based on AMD FSR 2.2, but the API looks for the best available technology available with the graphics drivers that are supported by the game. All three discrete GPU makers responded positively to DirectSR.https://tpucdn.com/img/MM6QXrXN1Z53k0ck_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/MM6QXrXN1Z53k0ck.jpg)

In addition to its two new CPU cores, Arm has announced three new GPU cores, namely the Immortalis-G925, Mali-G725 and Mali-G625. Starting from the top, the Immortalis-G925 is said to bring up to 37 percent better performance at 30 percent lower power usage compared to last year's Immortalis-G720 GPU core, whilst having two additional GPU cores in the test scenario. It's also said to bring up to 52 percent better ray tracing performance and up to 36 percent improved inference in AI/ML workloads. It's also been given a big overhaul when it comes to ray tracing—due to it being aimed towards gaming phones—and Arm claims that it can either offer up to 52 percent increased performance by reducing the accuracy in scenes with intricate objects, or 27 percent more performance with maintained accuracy.

The Immortalis-G925 supports 50 percent more shader cores and it supports configurations of up to 24 cores, compared to 16 cores for the Immortalis-G720. The Mali-G725 will be available with between six and nine cores, whereas the Mali-G625 will sport between one and five cores. The Mali-G625 is intended for smartwatches and entry-level mobile devices where a more complex GPU might not be suitable due to power draw. The Mali-G725 on the other hand is targeting upper mid-range devices and the Immortalis-G925 is aimed towards flagship devices or gaming phones as mentioned above. In related news, Arm said it's working with Epic Games to get its Unreal Engine 5 desktop renderer up and running on Android, which could lead to more complex games on mobile devices.https://tpucdn.com/img/i4RL8luNkeYlxPlT_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/i4RL8luNkeYlxPlT.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/FKsajvQJCi6GeZDs_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/FKsajvQJCi6GeZDs.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/1ucnAuGIHTPqJF94_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/1ucnAuGIHTPqJF94.jpg)

According to Jon Peddie Research latest report, the global GPU and CPU markets ended Q1 2024 on growth. GPU shipments reached 70 million units, while PC CPU shipments increased by 33% year-over-year, the second consecutive yearly increase in over two decades. Over the next five years, discrete GPUs are projected to achieve 22% penetration in the PC market as the overall GPU installed approaches 3 billion units by 2026. Among major GPU vendors, AMD's market share dipped 0.7% from last quarter, while Intel gained 0.3% and Nvidia rose 0.4%. However, overall GPU shipments declined 9.9% quarter-over-quarter. The total GPU attach rate for PCs was 113%, slightly down from the prior quarter. Desktop graphics add-in board shipments also decreased 14.8%.

While Q1 is typically flat or down versus Q4, Jon Peddie Research's president suggests this quarter's performance could signal a return to normal seasonality. With Microsoft, AMD and Intel promoting AI PCs, and forecasts pointing to growth in Q2, there are optimistic signs - although semiconductor suppliers are guiding 7.9% down on average for next quarter.https://tpucdn.com/img/qdHaLpL7aLgceNQO_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/qdHaLpL7aLgceNQO.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/ATIg9lii58xh9t27_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ATIg9lii58xh9t27.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/yKmLgcwTT1eBvmwH_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/yKmLgcwTT1eBvmwH.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/icujRPeFNwQtCG0R_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/icujRPeFNwQtCG0R.jpg)

Welcome to the first week of summer, at least in the northern hemisphere. There are no AAA releases this week, which gives you all plenty of time to focus on our Computex content instead of playing a new blockbuster game. This week's major release involves aliens, but not as you know them and they're out to kill. The rest of this week's new releases involves a DLC for a major MMORPG, a politics, religion and war game, some really old stuff, a nuclear plant meltdown cleanup and a dead dragon.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game (https://killerklownsthegame.com/) / This week's major release / Tuesday 4 June
Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror based on the iconic '80s film. In the battle between Killer Klowns and citizens of Crescent Cove, team up and use your wits to harvest humans or save them from the alien invasion! Crescent Cove is a sprawling arena for unique 3v7 fights between Klowns and humans—boasting various locations and a multitude of tactical opportunities for both teams. We're in Taipei to catch NVIDIA's Computex 2024 keynote address. AI would be decades behind where it is without NVIDIA's singleminded focus on accelerating it, and supporting the most fundamental research in AI, to bring it where it is now—in a position to drive a whole new industrial revolution of the kind the Internet did some 30 years ago. While NVIDIA's AI acceleration focuses on hard iron AI GPUs for the data-centers, the company hasn't lost sight of the hundreds of millions of gamers with a GeForce RTX GPU that's capable of accelerating AI faster than any NPU could by far. The company has set sights on the AI PC. It's already been running AI-based applications for gamers for over 5 years now, with DLSS, but has been consistently releasing AI-based apps, such as the most recent ChatRTX. The company is looking to make gamers' lives even more enjoyable with the magic of AI. Join us in this live blog as we unwrap NVIDIA's latest toys for gamers.https://tpucdn.com/img/esY7cVj7BLworx23_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/esY7cVj7BLworx23.jpg)

ASUS today announced the ROG Ally X, its ambitious new handheld game console that's a step up from the ROG Ally that the company launched last year. The ROG Ally X is powered by the same AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor as the ROG Ally, but with 50% more unified memory—now up to 24 GB of LPDDR5X-7500, which runs at an 18% higher speed than the 16 GB LPDDR5-6400 of the original. The designers also implemented an M.2-2280 NVMe SSD slot, which opens the console up to the widest possible selection of NVMe SSDs. The console includes a 1 TB drive, which is double that of the 500 GB that the ROG Ally comes with. The company has also significantly upgraded the thermal solution of the console with a larger fan, and better thermal venting, which offers 6°C lower gaming temperatures.

Perhaps the biggest feature upgrade is the battery, which is 80 Wh, a 100% increase from the 40 Wh of the original ROG Ally. This may not be a linear 100% increase in battery life from the ROG Ally (due to the various hardware upgrades), but should still pose significant improvements to it. Other hardware updates include USB4, which includes DisplayPort passthrough from the iGPU; besides a separate USB 3.2 Gen 2 type-C. The console supports USB-PD with 140 W fast-charging, and is paired with a first-party GaN-based 140 W fast-charger. Dimensions are similar to those of the ROG Ally, except for 4 mm added thickness, and 70 g added weight (608 g vs. 678 g). Available from July, the ROG Ally X is priced at $799, and includes a 3-month Xbox Game Pass. We went hands on with the console at ASUS's pre-Computex event. Stay tuned for several more announcements form the company in the coming days.https://tpucdn.com/img/IFL39ZgMu3iIBdWk_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/IFL39ZgMu3iIBdWk.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/Pim09eoKwJsqMJLv_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Pim09eoKwJsqMJLv.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/EG8Q1yIXpVHK7FoA_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/EG8Q1yIXpVHK7FoA.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/DZoUUxVqG1uHH96N_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/DZoUUxVqG1uHH96N.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/fzBs3KjklC2hkSvt_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/fzBs3KjklC2hkSvt.jpg)
