JMicron Technology Corporation, in collaboration with Vinpower, Inc., have developed the first of its kind Enhanced 10Gbps Portable SSD (PSSD), using the collaboratively developed iVP817 IC Chip, that's compatible with Apple iOS devices supporting the iPhone iAP2. The PSSD offers super-fast Read/Write (R/W) data transfer speeds and is the first of its kind to provide Secure, High Powered, High-Speed backup and storage across all computing platforms, which includes the Apple iOS platform, as well as Android, PC, MacBook, Chromebook and more. While the R/W transfer speeds for USB flash storage devices compatible with smartphones and tablets typically range from 20 MB/sec to 80 MB/sec, the enhanced PSSD achieved verifiable R/W transfer speeds at more than 800 MB/sec with an iPhone 15Pro and 15Pro Max. That means, when using the enhanced PSSD with Vinpower's iAP2 based App, one could backup a 10 GB video, from an iPhone 15Pro or 15Pro Max, in around 12 seconds. On top of that, the PSSD will accommodate a range of NVMe SSD with varying form factor lengths and capacities up to and exceeding 8 TB of secure storage.

JMicron is a leading IC design company specialized in high-speed data and signal interfaces bridge controllers including NVMe to USB bridges, while Vinpower is a leader in designing IC chip firmware, circuit design, and manufacturing Apple iOS backup and storage devices and related Apps. AMD has quietly added some interesting codenames to its ROCm hardware support list. The biggest surprise is the appearance of "RDNA 4" and "Navi 44" (https://github.com/ROCm/clr/blob/943fddc1a678508bd3e629b8e7b67c3e4a04e46d/opencl/tests/ocltst/module/runtime/OCLDeviceQueries.cpp#L122) codenames, hinting at a potential successor to the current RDNA 3 GPU architecture powering AMD's Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards. The upcoming Radeon RX 8000 series could see Navi 44 SKU with a codename "gfx1200". While details are scarce, the inclusion of RDNA 4 and Navi 44 in the ROCm list suggests AMD is working on a new GPU microarchitecture that could bring significant performance and efficiency gains. While RDNA 4 may be destined for future Radeon gaming GPUs, in the data center GPU compute market, AMD is preparing a CDNA 4 based successors to the MI300 series. However, it appears that we haven't seen all the MI300 variants first. Equally intriguing is the "MI300X1" codename, which appears to reference an upcoming AI-focused accelerator from AMD.

While we wait for more information, we can't decipher whether the Navi 44 GPU SKU is for the high-end or low-end segment. If previous generations are for reference, then the Navi 44 SKU would target the low end of the GPU performance spectrum. The previous generation RDNA 3 had Navi 33 as an entry-level model, whereas the RDNA 2 had a Navi 24 SKU for entry-level GPUs. We have reported on RDNA 4 merely being a "bug correction" generation to fix the perf/Watt curve and offer better efficiency overall. What happens finally, we have to wait and see. AMD could announce more details in its upcoming Computex keynote.https://tpucdn.com/img/d0b0CzxFPzKl0MZk_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/d0b0CzxFPzKl0MZk.jpg)

The specs sheet of the upcoming ASUS ROG Ally X handheld game console was leaked to the web, confirming many of the rumors that have been doing rounds for the past month. The Ally X is a definite step up from the ROG Ally Extreme. It was originally rumored to be just a design revision that relocates the microSD card slot away from a thermal vent on the original design, which was causing memory cards to fail. The specs sheet confirms that the ROG Ally X features a larger M.2 drive bay with support for M.2-2280 drives. You'll be spoiled for choice picking a drive to go with this device. The drive included is 1 TB—double the 500 GB of the original ROG Ally.

Next up, there had been rumors of a significantly larger battery, but we didn't have an exact capacity figure, until now. It turns out, that the ROG Ally X packs a massive 80 Wh battery, which works toward a roughly 40% battery life improvement. While the CPU is the same Ryzen Z1 Extreme, ASUS improved the memory, which is now 24 GB LPDDR5X-7500, compared to 16 GB LPDDR5-6400 on the ROG Ally Extreme. This is a 50% increase in memory size, and 17% increase in memory bandwidth. Lastly, ASUS is introducing USB4 type-C, with integrated DisplayPort 1.4 and PD 3.0 output.https://tpucdn.com/img/C5DegeyAcBTdnWen_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/C5DegeyAcBTdnWen.jpg)

NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition graphics card may implement a design closely resembling the cinder block product design the company readied for its RTX 4090 Ti graphics card (https://www.techpowerup.com/311932/a-closer-look-at-nvidias-cinder-block-sized-air-cooler-for-rtx-4090-ti-22-heatpipes) that never materialized into a marketable product. This sees a 4-slot thick board design, with a slender main logic PCB arranged along the plane of the motherboard, on top of which the cooling solution is mounted perpendicular to the plane, as shown in the images below. This main logic board contains the GPU, memory, and VRM. There two additional PCBs—one has the display I/O, and the other has the PCIe interface. There is a fourth disaggregated component, the 12V-2x6 receptacle, located somewhere along the top of the cooling solution.

Confirmation of NVIDIA using the RTX 4090 Ti "cinder block" board design for the RTX 5090 comes from kopite7kimi, a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks. Kopite7kimi mentions a card that has a "Main Board, IO Rigid Board and a separate PCIE slot component (perhaps it should not be considered as the third PCB)," which perfectly describes with the RTX 4090 Ti. NVIDIA had completed the design phase of this card, which made it to its cooling solution OEM (which is likely where the images leaked out from). The company probably decided against launching this product because the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX fell significantly short of the performance proposition of the RTX 4090.https://tpucdn.com/img/ThySjZogqz59KbL3_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ThySjZogqz59KbL3.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/loRgUyh6b01AFFoC_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/loRgUyh6b01AFFoC.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/TpcuyDtpimtW2L7t_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/TpcuyDtpimtW2L7t.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/wcgq5081H69AH86a_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/wcgq5081H69AH86a.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/DdXYFbOOT48tL8Fe_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/DdXYFbOOT48tL8Fe.jpg)

When it debuted on the Apple II in 1981, SirTech's Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord was the first game to recreate a pen-and-paper, Dungeons & Dragons-style role-playing game for home computers. As the first party-based RPG, it directly inspired enduring series such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Demon's Souls.

SirTech published seven Wizardry sequels over the next two decades. In the years since, the series' popularity has persisted in Japan, with a number of additional sequels and spin-off games released only in that market. As of 2024, the Wizardry franchise encompasses more than forty titles.https://tpucdn.com/img/8UrXxA4P6SPI8PrG_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/8UrXxA4P6SPI8PrG.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/a7esMdTiPEMwCPAB_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/a7esMdTiPEMwCPAB.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/nLm1i5JabB3YjCyE_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/nLm1i5JabB3YjCyE.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/GdVNw2cf9xmxX0yV_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/GdVNw2cf9xmxX0yV.jpg)

Yesterday we reported on DDR6 memory hitting new heights of performance (https://www.techpowerup.com/322695/pc-ddr6-memory-to-offer-10-times-the-bandwidth-of-ddr4-synopsys) and it looks like LPDDR6 will follow suit, at least based on details in a JEDEC presentation. LPDDR6 will just like LPDDR5 be available as solder down memory, but it will also be available in a new LPCAMM2 module. The bus speed of LPDDR5 on LPCAMM2 modules is expected to peak at 9.2 GT/s based on JEDEC specifications, but LPDDR6 will extend this to 14.4 GT/s or roughly a 50 percent increase. However, today the fastest and only LPCAMM2 modules on the retail market which are using LPDDR5X, comes in at 7.5 GT/s, which suggests that launch speeds of LPDDR6 will end up being quite far from the peak speeds.

There will be some other interesting changes to LPDDR6 CAMM2 modules as there will be a move from 128-bit per module to 192-bit per module and each channel will go from 32-bits to 48-bits. Part of the reason for this is that LPDDR6 is moving to a 24-bit channel width, consisting of two 12-bit sub channels, as mentioned in yesterday's news post. This might seem odd at first, but in reality is fairly simple, LPDDR6 will have native ECC (Error Correction Code) or EDC (Error Detection Code) support, but it's currently not entirely clear how this will be implemented on a system level. JEDEC is also looking at developing a screwless solution for the CAMM2 and LPCAMM2 memory modules, but at the moment there's no clear solution in sight. We might also get to see LPDDR6 via LPCAMM2 modules on the desktop, although the presentation only mentions CAMM2 for the desktop, something we've already seen that MSI is working on (https://www.techpowerup.com/322742/next-crop-of-msi-project-zero-motherboards-to-implement-camm2-ddr5-memory).https://tpucdn.com/img/DtUtSWcl08MBiKXg_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/DtUtSWcl08MBiKXg.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/Djj9PGPlnQ6kti05_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/Djj9PGPlnQ6kti05.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/YVcQdrEtNQKsQzJY_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/YVcQdrEtNQKsQzJY.jpg)

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") today held a ceremony to mark the completion of a new 300-millimeter wafer fabrication facility for power semiconductors and an office building at Kaga Toshiba Electronics Corporation in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, one of Toshiba's key group companies. The completion of construction is a major milestone for Phase 1 of Toshiba's multi-year investment program. Toshiba will now proceed with equipment installation, toward starting mass production in the second half of fiscal year 2024. Once Phase 1 reaches full-scale operation, Toshiba's production capacity for power semiconductors, mainly MOSFETs and IGBTs, will be 2.5 times that of fiscal 2021, when the investment plan was made. Decisions on the construction and start of operation of Phase 2 will reflect market trends.

The new manufacturing building follows and will make a major contribution to Toshiba's Business Continuity Plan (BCP): it has a seismic isolation structure that absorbs earthquake shock and redundant power sources. Energy from renewable source and solar panels on the roof of the building (onsite PPA model) will allow the facility to meet 100% of its power requirement with renewable energy.https://tpucdn.com/img/KI5yxmXYltsuZ1Po_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/KI5yxmXYltsuZ1Po.jpg)

The CAMM2 and LPCAMM2 form-factors were originally designed for thin-and-light notebooks, to provide them with memory replacements/upgrades without compromising on the Z-Height tolerances of the device's design. It looks like MSI sees a future for the CAMM2 form-factor on desktops, specifically the ones without cables sticking out. The company's next round of motherboards under its Project Zero banner will replace the conventional DDR5 DIMM slots with DDR5 CAMM2 slots. The company is joining forces with Kingston Technology for the effort.

Kingston is readying a new line of performance-segment CAMM2 modules under its FURY Impact brand that it originally uses for performance SO-DIMMs meant for gaming notebooks. MSI's next-gen Project Zero motherboard features contact points for a DDR5 CAMM2 module. A single CAMM2 module utilizes the entire 160-bit memory bus width of the Socket LGA1700 processor (that's both channels and their sub-channels). Kingston may release CAMM2 modules for most common memory sizes (such as 32 GB, 48 GB, 64 GB, and 96 GB), and most common DDR5 OC speeds for the platform (ranging between DDR5-6000 and DDR5-8000).https://tpucdn.com/img/oqdvnZ1hewg6k1D3_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/oqdvnZ1hewg6k1D3.jpg)

USB4 hasn't exactly taken off as yet, largely due to a shortage of devices in the market and with a limited number of device controllers, the competition in the market is also slow. With Thunderbolt compatibility, there are plenty of USB4 compatible hosts out there though, even though you only get 32 Gbps rather than 40 Gbps of data throughput when a USB4 device is connected to Thunderbolt 3 or 4, although Thunderbolt 5 will allow for the full 40 Gbps. A company called ADT-Link has launched a product it calls the UT3G which is pretty much a retail ready bridge solution that allows techies and tinkerers to try out whatever PCIe devices they have over USB4. The adapter has a full-length PCIe x16 slot, but it's limited to a four lane PCIe interface which is compatible with PCIe 4.0, albeit not at the full 64 Gbps that such an interface can deliver.

In addition to the USB4 Type-C port on the PCB there's a standard 24-pin ATX power supply connector for power, which means that this isn't really a portable solution. However, the company has tested the UT3G with various graphics cards from both AMD and NVIDIA to make sure you can use it as an external graphics card dock. The UT3G has also been tested to be compatible with Windows, Linux and macOS, although macOS is limited to AMD GPUs. The board is built around the ASMedia ASM2464PD USB4 to PCIe 4.0 bridge and this shouldn't come as a surprise, as so far this is the only such device controller. ADT-Link doesn't appear to be selling the UT3G to consumers, but it can be picked up online from DFRobot starting at US$129 for a single unit.https://tpucdn.com/img/3Tj6H7mGDBBiK25b_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/3Tj6H7mGDBBiK25b.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/hBejcyJebVQBC2bl_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/hBejcyJebVQBC2bl.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/pQst9Otx7gCJ7XIi_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/pQst9Otx7gCJ7XIi.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/V4sAi1o8TbqpuazC_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/V4sAi1o8TbqpuazC.jpg)

Last week, we got confirmation (https://www.techpowerup.com/322704/qualcomms-success-with-windows-ai-pc-drawing-nvidia-back-to-the-client-soc-business) from the highest levels of Dell and NVIDIA that the latter is making a client PC processor for the Windows on Arm (WoA) AI PC ecosystem that only has one player in it currently, Qualcomm. Michael Dell hinted that this NVIDIA AI PC processor would be ready in 2025. Since then, speculation has been rife about the various IP blocks NVIDIA could use in the development of this chip, the two key areas of debate have been the CPU cores and the process node.

Given that NVIDIA is gunning toward a 2025 launch of its AI PC processor, the company could implement reference Arm IP CPU cores, such as the Arm Cortex X5 "Blackhawk," and not venture out toward developing its own CPU cores on the Arm machine architecture, unlike Apple. Depending on how the market recieves its chips, NVIDIA could eventually develop its own cores. Next up, the company could use the most advanced 3 nm-class foundry node available in 2025 for its chip, such as the TSMC N3P. Given that even Apple and Qualcomm will build their contemporary notebook chips on this node, it would be a logical choice of node for NVIDIA. Then there's graphics and AI acceleration hardware.https://tpucdn.com/img/CLEG5NDk5ChWq1wi_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/CLEG5NDk5ChWq1wi.jpg)
