XFX over the weekend rolled out the Radeon RX 7900 XTX Phoenix Nirvana graphics card, the company's new flagship custom-design product based on fastest AMD Radeon GPU you can buy. From the looks of it, the card is China-exclusive, as we haven't seen any updates from the European or North American arms of XFX showcase this card. The Phoenix Nirvana is noticeably larger than the company's current MERC 310, and features a 4-slot design, with a significantly heavier heatsink. The card is 34.6 cm long, 13 cm tall, and is 4 slots thick.

The star attraction with this card is its large aluminium fin-stack heatsink, which features 216 aluminium fins for a total of 62.586 mm² of surface area for heat dissipation; six copper heatpipes, a vapor-chamber base, and 15,000 W/mK Honeywell PTM 7950 phase-changing thermal pad between the vapor-chamber and the GPU. Each of the three 100 mm fans of the XFX RX 7900 XTX Phoenix Nirvana features a fluid-dynamic bearing, turns at speeds of up to 3,200 RPM, pushing 70.08 CFM of airflow, at 4.88 mm H₂O, each. The card is priced at ¥7,899 in China, which converts to roughly $1,090.https://tpucdn.com/img/T5u3v8PHGjubja8E_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/T5u3v8PHGjubja8E.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/NFuAkDm7AvmLWWae_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/NFuAkDm7AvmLWWae.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/HS4qPE1fa2gPiule_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/HS4qPE1fa2gPiule.jpg)

On Friday, Sony announced (https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/553850/view/4196868529806518741?l=english) that Helldivers 2, 3rd person squad-based shooter from Arrowhead, will require a PlayStation Network (PSN) account for gamers to link in addition to their Steam accounts. However, that has caused quite a stir in the gaming community, especially in the form of negative reviews on Steam. Since the May 2 announcement of mandatory PSN account linking, the game received more than 200,000+ negative reviews from gamers. Not only is the PSN account another layer of log-in details, but it also doesn't work in 177 countries (https://twitter.com/SteamDB/status/1787016207364657340), effectively preventing gamers from those 177 countries from purchasing and enjoying the game. Arrowhead Studios CEO and Helldivers 2 Creative Director Johan Pilestedt has noted (https://twitter.com/Pilestedt/status/1787073896560165299) that over the weekend, there were talks with Sony about reversing the decision.

Today, we have the information that Sony has reviewed its course and that the update requiring a PSN account, planned for May 6, will not be moving forward. This means that the game is PSN-free, and gamers are able to enjoy it on their Steam accounts. It has also been reported on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/helldivers2/comments/1ck2w2n/got_my_steam_refund/) that some users received refunds from Steam, even when their purchase was over two months old and they played 120+ hours of the game. As per the GDPR, terms that are changed after the agreement is made require action from the seller. This has resulted in Steam stepping up to gamers and issuing a refund for the game, as PSN account linking was optional. Gamers have shown their collective power, and Sony has managed to reverse its decision so that no further harm is done.https://tpucdn.com/img/UVT7AXc7qMfYjV8p_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/UVT7AXc7qMfYjV8p.jpg)

MSI today released firmware updates for its MPG 271QRX QD-OLED and MPG 321URX QD-OLED gaming monitors. The updates are aimed at giving end-users control over DSC (display stream compression), to improve image quality when the display I/O bandwidth permits. This control is in the form of an OSD-level toggle for DSC DLDSR and DSR modes. For the MPG 271QRX QD-OLED, the update also adds a mode switch between HDMI Console and HDMI PC, with the default being Console. The update also packs optimizations to improve input lag and the monitor's share in whole-system latency. The update also includes aspect-ratio selection in the OSD for the MPG 321URX QD-OLED. A white-line artifact on the MPG 271QRX QD-OLED when using 2560 x 1440 @ 360 Hz has been fixed. Visit the support section of the product pages of your monitor for instructions on how to get and install the firmware updates.https://tpucdn.com/img/cUsbtaQR1sxdIx6u_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/cUsbtaQR1sxdIx6u.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/PQugu0QBrNk5yC3p_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/PQugu0QBrNk5yC3p.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/h0e4irrnjFrnU9zN_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/h0e4irrnjFrnU9zN.jpg)

ASUS is reportedly revising the design of the ROG Ally handheld game console to address microSD card heat deaths. In its original design, the ROG Ally has its microSD card reader located directly under the heat vents from which the active cooling mechanism exhausts heat from the SoC. This could cause microSD cards to overheat and damage; and eventually even destroy the microSD card reader itself. In its revision, the card reader will be repositioned away from the vents, and extensively tested for better reliability with microSD card operation. As for current ROG Ally owners, ASUS has extended the warranty by 2 years, and provided coverage for damaged card readers. This, however, only covers the card reader itself, there's no liability for damaged cards or the data on them.https://tpucdn.com/img/ejjdTS9GymLxGYaH_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ejjdTS9GymLxGYaH.jpg)

NVIDIA debuted the current RTX 40-series "Ada" in 2022, which means the company is expected to debut its next-generation in some shape or form in 2024, having refreshed it earlier this year. We've known for a while that the new GeForce RTX 50-series "Blackwell" could see a 2024 debut, which is going by past trends, would be the top-two or three SKUs, followed by a ramp up in the following year, but we're now learning through a new Moore's Law is Dead leak that the launch could be limited to just the flagship product, the GeForce RTX 5090, or the SKU that succeeds the RTX 4090.

Even a launch limited to the flagship RTX 5090 would give us a fair idea of the new "Blackwell" architecture, its various new features, and how the other SKUs in the lineup could perform at their relative price-points, because the launch could at least include a technical overview of the architecture. NVIDIA "Blackwell" is expected to introduce another generational performance leap over the current lineup. The reasons NVIDIA is going with a more conservative launch of GeForce "Blackwell" could be to allow the market to digest inventories of the current RTX 40-series; and to accord higher priority to AI GPUs based on the architecture, which fetch the company much higher margins.https://tpucdn.com/img/KDzLs5eVYlPwi15p_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/KDzLs5eVYlPwi15p.jpg)

Welcome to the first full week of the month of May. It's another rather slow week of new game releases, or rather, there are no major game releases, as a few games that were supposed to be released this week, got pushed back to later in the year. As such, the biggest release this week is all about cats. As for the rest of this week's releases, we have an RPG where you beat up your enemies with plushies, an abyss full of knights, a pill eating yellow blob, a well full of animals and someone holding a gate closed. Next week will be a lot busier though.

Little Kitty, Big City (https://www.littlekittybigcity.com/) / This week's major release / Thursday 9 May
A peaceful catnap turns into a whimsical adventure! Will you make your way home or will you explore what the big city has to offer first? I mean, getting home is obviously your main priority. Obviously. Well, it's one of your priorities. Maybe more of a guideline... It's definitely on your To-Do list somewhere! But first? Exploration. Intel's CEO, Pat Gelsinger, has confirmed that the upcoming 18A process of the Panther Lake CPU generation is on schedule for a mid-2025 release, which aligns with the initial projection. This development marks a significant milestone in the company's ongoing efforts to integrate AI capabilities into its processors. The mid-2025 release date is expected to follow the debut of Intel's Arrow Lake process in late 2024 or early 2025, a release that holds the promise of significant advancements in AI computing. During Intel's Q1 2024 Quarterly Results, Gelsinger expressed confidence in the company's AI capabilities, stating that the Core Ultra platform currently delivers leadership AI performance and that the next-generation platforms, Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake, will launch later this year, tripling AI performance. He also mentioned that the Panther Lake generation, set to release in 2025, will grow AI performance up to an additional 2x.

The Panther Lake generation represents the culmination of three generations of work in a short time and is expected to continue Intel's iterative approach. This transition is marked by a shift from a hybrid architecture, a combination of different types of processors, to a disaggregated die, where different components of the processor are separated, as AI computing becomes increasingly prominent. This strategic move is aimed at optimizing AI performance and flexibility. This marks the third generation of the Intel Core Ultra series, following Ultra 100 (Meteor Lake), Ultra 200 (Arrow Lake), and Lunar Lake (200V). Intel's release strategy mirrors the pattern set by the Hybrid Architecture, with Alder Lake debuting in 2021, followed by Raptor Lake in 2022, and a refreshed Raptor Lake released last year to bridge the gap until LGA 1851 was ready. However, Intel's roadmap has seen adjustments in the past, such as the initial promise of an Arrow Lake release before the end of 2024, which was later retracted. The mid-2025 release of Panther Lake aligns with rumors of Arrow Lake's late 2024 or early 2025 debut, suggesting that the 18A process CPU generation could debut several months after Arrow Lake.https://tpucdn.com/img/QaljWwaav7rta6oT_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/QaljWwaav7rta6oT.jpg)

Yesterday, Apple launched its next-generation M4 chip based on Apple Silicon custom design. The processor is a fourth-generation design that brings AI capabilities and improved CPU performance. First debuting in an iPad Pro, the CPU has been benchmarked in Geekbench v6. And results seem to be very promising. The latest M4 chip managed to score 3,767 points in single-core tests and 14,677 points in multi-core tests. Compared to the M3 chip, which scores 3,087 points in single-core and 11,702 in multi-core tests, the M4 chip is about 22% faster in single-core and 25% faster in multi-core synthetic benchmarks.

Of course, these results are not real-world use cases, but they give us a hint of what the Apple Silicon design team has been working on. For real-world results, we have to wait a little longer to see reviews and results from devices such as MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, which should have better cooling and possibly better clocks for the chip.https://tpucdn.com/img/LqhP7WsK6PIWdKj1_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/LqhP7WsK6PIWdKj1.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/6VL890LhWznryYNj_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/6VL890LhWznryYNj.jpg)

SK hynix announced today that it has developed the Zoned UFS, or ZUFS 4.0, a mobile NAND solution product for on-device AI applications. SK hynix said that the ZUFS 4.0, optimized for on-device AI from mobile devices such as smartphones, is the industry's best of its kind. The company expects the latest product to help expand its AI memory leadership to the NAND space, extending its success in the high-performance DRAM represented by HBM.

The ZUFS is a differentiated technology that classifies and stores data generated from smartphones in different zones in accordance with characteristics. Unlike a conventional UFS, the latest product groups and stores data with similar purposes and frequencies in separate zones, boosting the speed of a smartphone's operating system and management efficiency of the storage devices.https://tpucdn.com/img/lo5ncrW4rrAi0YpS_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/lo5ncrW4rrAi0YpS.jpg)

Corsair announced today that it has entered exclusive negotiations to acquire sim racing specialist Endor AG, owners of the world famous Fanatec brand. Corsair has reached an agreement with Endor to fund its short-term cash needs while both companies negotiate a restructuring of Endor's approximately €70 million of debt, which will ultimately result in Corsair acquiring Endor. "Fanatec is an incredible brand with a strong community, and we believe Corsair is the ideal home for Fanatec's loyal customers, employees and business partners," said Corsair CEO, Andy Paul. "This transaction would solve the company's significant debt load and position the company for growth and continued product portfolio expansion."

This sentiment is echoed by Endor. "We are very pleased to have found a strategic investor in Corsair who knows our market well and wants to invest for the long term," said Andres Ruff, CEO and Chief Restructuring Officer of Endor. Endor is a leading manufacturer of dedicated sim racing hardware, including force feedback steering wheels, pedals, and complete cockpits for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC-based racing simulators. This acquisition bolsters the investment Corsair has made in the simulation space, and means it is uniquely positioned going forward to provide peerless sim racing solutions.https://tpucdn.com/img/ldH6kvAzfLPOjT6q_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ldH6kvAzfLPOjT6q.jpg)

As computers and tablets got smaller and thinner, their connection ports ironically got less and less convenient. Since they limit our ability to connect other devices and accessories, we usually have to rely on adapters, but this 13-in-1 docking station brings back the days of when things were built-in for $49.99 (reg. $70). The docking station plugs into your iMac, Windows laptop, Microsoft Surface, iPad Pro, or any other device with a USB-C port. Then, you can use any of the following connections, as long as your device supports them:

With all of these connection options, you could connect three additional displays with HDMI and VGA, transfer data with USB-C and an SD card, plug audio accessories in with the 3.5 mm audio connection, and charge devices with USB 3.0 and 2.0. This 13-in-1 docking station is highly reviewed on Amazon, with 4.1 out of 5 stars from more than 2,800 reviews. On StackSocial, it has a solid 5-star rating, with reviewers talking about using it for their iMacs and MacBook Pros, writing "it works great with all the different ports no longer provided on laptops" and "it's nice not having to plug in all of these other dongles but just one that can handle everything".

Plug in with this 13-in-1 docking station on StackSocial for $49.99 (https://stacksocial.com/sales/13-in-1-docking-station-with-dual-hdmi?utm_source=techpowerup.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=13-in-1-docking-station-with-dual-hdmi&utm_term=scsf-595108&utm_content=a0xRn000000vrqqIAA&scsonar=1&aid=a-zpm4h3er) (reg. $70) and save 28%.https://tpucdn.com/img/fbFImA3EBjM5ebuT_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/fbFImA3EBjM5ebuT.jpg)

Intel is giving its next-generation desktop processor lineup the Core Ultra 200 series processor model numbering. We detailed the processor numbering in our older report (https://www.techpowerup.com/322060/intel-prepares-core-ultra-9-285k-core-ultra-7-265k-and-core-ultra-5-245k-arrow-lake-s-desktop-cpus). The Core Ultra 200 series would be the company's first desktop processors with AI capabilities thanks to an integrated 50 TOPS-class NPU. At the heart of these processors is the "Arrow Lake" microarchitecture. Its development is the reason the company had to refresh "Raptor Lake" to cover its 2023-24 processor lineup. The company's "Meteor Lake" microarchitecture topped off at CPU core counts of 6P+8E, which would have proven to be a generational regression in multithreaded application performance over "Raptor Lake." The new "Arrow Lake-S" desktop processor has a maximum CPU core configuration of 8P+16E, which means consumers can expect at least the same core-counts at given price-points to carry over.

According to a report by Chinese tech publication Benchlife.info, the introduction of "Arrow Lake" would see Intel's desktop processor model numbering align with that of its mobile processor numbering, and incorporate the Core Ultra brand to denote the latest microarchitecture for a given processor generation. Since "Arrow Lake" is a generation ahead of "Meteor Lake," processor models in the series get numbered under Core Ultra 200 series.https://tpucdn.com/img/wi1BOcvWi1SVD50Q_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/wi1BOcvWi1SVD50Q.jpg)

Personal computers (PCs) have been used as the major productivity device for several decades. But now we are entering a new era of PCs based on artificial intelligence (AI), thanks to the boom witnessed in generative AI (GenAI). We believe the inventory correction and demand weakness in the global PC market have already normalized, with the impacts from COVID-19 largely being factored in. All this has created a comparatively healthy backdrop for reshaping the PC industry. Counterpoint estimates that almost half a billion AI laptop PCs will be sold during the 2023-2027 period, with AI PCs reviving the replacement demand.

Counterpoint separates GenAI laptop PCs into three categories - AI basic laptop, AI-advanced laptop and AI-capable laptop - based on different levels of computational performance, corresponding use cases and the efficiency of computational performance. We believe AI basic laptops, which are already in the market, can perform basic AI tasks but not completely GenAI tasks and, starting this year, will be supplanted by more AI-advanced and AI-capable models with enough TOPS (tera operations per second) powered by NPU (neural processing unit) or GPU (graphics processing unit) to perform the advanced GenAI tasks really well.https://tpucdn.com/img/hcZ0vzP4v9y6cqYf_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/hcZ0vzP4v9y6cqYf.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/cMar9qjIV1NQ7G0r_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/cMar9qjIV1NQ7G0r.jpg)

The battle is over. Microsoft is finally changing the measuring methodology in its Task Manager from Mega Hertz (MHz) to Mega Transfers per second (MT/s). This comes amid the industry push for more technical correctness in RAM measuring, where the MHz nomenclature does not technically represent the speed at which the memory is actually running. While DRAM manufacturers list both MHz and MT/s, the advertised MHz number is much higher than the effective speed at which the DRAM is running, resulting in confusion and arguments in the industry about choosing the correct labeling of DRAM. A little history lesson teaches us that when single data rate (SDR) RAM was introduced, 100 MHz memory would perform 100 MT/s. However, when double data rate (DDR) memory appeared, it would allow for two memory transfers per clock cycle.

This would introduce some confusion where the MHz speed is often mixed up with MT/s. Hence, Microsoft is trying to repair the damage and list memory speeds in MT/s. Modern DDR5 memory makers are advertising DDR5 kits with "DDR5-4800" or "DDR5-6000," without any suffix like MHz or MT/s. This is because, for example, a DDR5-6000 kit runs at 6,000 MT/s, the effective speed is only 3,000 MHz. The actual clock of the memory is only half of what is advertised. The MT/s terminology would be more accurate and describe memory better. This Task Manager update is in the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.3570 in the Beta Channel, which will trickle down to stable Windows 11 updates for everyone soon.https://tpucdn.com/img/q2UQPh45eW6Ba8Sj_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/q2UQPh45eW6Ba8Sj.jpg)

AMD is preparing a new processor naming scheme for its next-generation processors, targeting the ultraportable segment, according to a report by Chinese tech publication ITHome, citing sources in ASUS. The new naming scheme purports to make it easier for customers to identify processors with AI capabilities (integrated NPU), processor class (whether it's U, H, or HX), followed by a numerical component that lets customer know product grade. This runs contrary to yesterday's report that cited a Lenovo product flyer referencing a "Ryzen 8050 series." It remains to be seen if the 8050 series are a class of mainstream processors without AI capabilities, which is unlikely, given that Lenovo is using them with its premium ThinkPad T-series.https://tpucdn.com/img/iOFgTQXxPWQj6fxv_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/iOFgTQXxPWQj6fxv.jpg)

The Sabrent USB-C to SATA/IDE 2.5"/3.5"/5.25" Drive Adapter (USB-DS12) is your one-stop storage management solution for SATA and IDE hard drives (HDDs), solid state drives (SSDs), and optical drives (CD/DVD-RW). It connects easily to Windows, macOS, and Linux systems, among other possible device hosts, via an integrated 5 Gbps (USB Gen 3.2 1x1) USB-C cable. The maximum speed of the connection depends on the drive's interface at speeds up to SATA 3 Gbps ("SATA-II" / SATA-300). The USB-DS12 adapter is plug and play with no drivers required and is hot-swappable for your convenience.

It's important to support devices both old and new. 3.5" and 5.25" drives require additional 12 V power to operate reliably, so we have included an external power supply. IDE drives may also require a 4-pin Molex style connector for power rather than an SATA power connector, so also included is an appropriate connector for maximum flexibility. The unit itself also has a power status LED to let you know when things are good to go. Plug everything in and get to retrieving or transferring your data, formatting or cloning your drive, or freely engage in other storage management operations.https://tpucdn.com/img/eX8iRpSKExeMme6J_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/eX8iRpSKExeMme6J.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/s2rIdZZRdHuTFz2U_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/s2rIdZZRdHuTFz2U.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/R0t1pKNnToCbVjHf_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/R0t1pKNnToCbVjHf.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/eZBTZQIjWZNoKPB8_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/eZBTZQIjWZNoKPB8.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/iZxyZG3FoTmgB3Ht_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/iZxyZG3FoTmgB3Ht.jpg)

AMD has reached a significant milestone, capturing a record-high share of the X86 CPU market in the first quarter of 2024, according to the latest report from Mercury Research. This achievement marks a significant step forward for the chipmaker in its long battle against rival Intel's dominance in the crucial computer processor space. The surge was fueled by strong demand for AMD's Ryzen and EPYC processors across consumer and enterprise markets. The Ryzen lineup's compelling price-to-performance ratio has struck a chord with gamers, content creators, and businesses seeking cost-effective computing power without sacrificing capabilities. It secured AMD's 23.9% share, an increase from the previous Q4 of 2023, which has seen a 19.8% market share.

The company has also made major inroads on the data center front with its EPYC server CPUs. AMD's ability to supply capable yet affordable processors has enabled cloud providers and enterprises to scale operations on AMD's platform. Several leading tech giants have embraced EPYC, contributing to AMD's surging server market footprint. Now, it is at 23.6%, a significant increase over the past few years, whereas AMD was just above 10% four years ago in 2020. AMD lost some share to Intel on the mobile PC front due to the Meteor Lake ramp, but it managed to gain a small percentage of the market share of client PCs. As AMD rides the momentum into the second half of 2024, all eyes will be on whether the chipmaker can sustain this trajectory and potentially claim an even larger slice of the x86 CPU pie from Intel in the coming quarters.https://tpucdn.com/img/dhW6VL0t5mEzW1Jq_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/dhW6VL0t5mEzW1Jq.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/4xJXu6NYHJqPSsLx_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/4xJXu6NYHJqPSsLx.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/daPXBPmv5yaU9xcM_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/daPXBPmv5yaU9xcM.jpg)
