The International Data Corporation (IDC) has been tracking sales of Sony's PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset since launch time (February 2023)—a new report claims that a backlog of unsold units has accumulated. Bloomberg (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-18/sony-hits-pause-on-psvr2-production-as-unsold-inventory-piles-up)'s analysis of IDC data reveals that PS VR2 sales have consistently declined each quarter, despite promising early numbers (https://www.techpowerup.com/309136/playstation-vr2-outsold-original-psvr-in-first-six-weeks)—the publication alleges that Sony Group Corporation has paused production of its ($550 MSRP) PS VR2 headset: "until it clears a backlog of unsold units, according to people familiar with its plans, adding to doubts about the appeal of virtual reality gadgets." Anonymous industry moles reckon that manufacturing facilities have pumped out over two million examples since launch time. Sony is unlikely to admit, publicly, that it is having a tough time shifting its second generation virtual reality headset—Bloomberg's network of insiders believe that "stocks of the device are building up."

The lack of AAA content, developed exclusively for the PS VR2's ecosystem, is cited as big stumbling block—Bloomberg (alongside numerous publications) reckons that sales have suffered due to an absence of system-selling titles. Horizon: Call of the Mountain (2023) was an impactful launch title, but the headset's software portfolio contains a lot of "novelty" items, casual experiences and glorified tech demos (according to community feedback). Late last month, Sony admitted that it was exploring options (https://www.techpowerup.com/319456/playstation-vr2-pc-compatibility-teased-by-sony) beyond the VR2's normal mode of operation (PS5 acting as host): "We're pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5. We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates." This surprising announcement arrived mere days before the firing of (around) 900 PlayStation employees. Company leadership (https://www.techpowerup.com/319686/sony-announces-layoff-of-900-playstation-employees-london-studio-shuttered) revealed that Firesprite's headcount would be reduced. This VR-oriented studio collaborated with Guerrilla Games on the development of Horizon: Call of the Mountain. Sony's London Studio will be closed down—its team had previously worked on PlayStation VR Worlds (2016) and Blood & Truth (2019)—compatible with Sony's first generation headset.https://tpucdn.com/img/IVpaQRMf3aM3Qljv_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/IVpaQRMf3aM3Qljv.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/d2NWSAbzPBwx1PM1_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/d2NWSAbzPBwx1PM1.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/JjfEtaCUaMSAzb6u_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/JjfEtaCUaMSAzb6u.jpg)

TSMC is experiencing unprecedented demand (https://www.techpowerup.com/319728/tsmc-customers-request-construction-of-additional-ai-chip-fabs) from AI chip customers—unnamed parties have (fancifully) requested the construction of entirely new fabrication facilities. Taiwan's leading semiconductor contract manufacturer seems to concentrating on "sensible" expansions, mainly in the area of CoWoS packaging output—according to an Economic Daily report, company leadership and local government were negotiating over the construction of four new advanced packaging plants. Insiders propose that plans have been revised—an investment in excess of 500 billion yuan ($16 billion) will enable the founding of six new CoWoS-focused facilities. TSMC is expected to make an official announcement next month—industry moles reckon that construction work will start in April. Two (of the six total) advanced packaging plants could become fully operational before the conclusion of 2024.

Lately, TSMC has initiated an ambitious recruitment drive (https://www.techpowerup.com/320075/tsmc-aiming-to-recruit-approximately-6000-new-workers)—targeting around 6000 new workers. A touring entity is tasked with the attraction of "talents with high enthusiasm for semiconductors." The majority of new recruits are likely heading to new or expanded Taiwan-based facilities. The Economic Daily report proposes that Chiayi City's technological hub will play host to TSMC's new CoWoS packaging plants. A DigiTimes Asia news piece (https://www.digitimes.com.tw/tech/dt/n/shwnws.asp?CnlID=1&Cat=40&id=0000683977_0BQLFLTJ67ZV708DI5YID) (from January) posited that TSMC leadership anticipates CoWoS output reaching 44,000 units by the end of 2024. This predicted tally could grow, thanks to the (rumored) activation of additional factories. CoWoS packaging is considered to be a vital aspect of AI accelerators—insiders believe that TSMC's latest investment will boost production of NVIDIA H100 GPUs. The combined output of six new CoWoS plants will assist greatly in the creation of next-gen B100 (https://www.techpowerup.com/320466/nvidia-b100-blackwell-ai-gpu-technical-details-leak-out) chips.https://tpucdn.com/img/qezvMuBZjkURuZw0_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/qezvMuBZjkURuZw0.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/ZMXeBnvwdZEqKy9o_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/ZMXeBnvwdZEqKy9o.jpg)

NVIDIA has been offering its GPU IP for more than a decade now ever since the introduction of Kepler uArch, and its IP has had relatively low traction in other SoCs. However, that trend seems to be reaching an inflection point as NVIDIA has given MediaTek a license to use its GPU IP to produce the next generation of processors for the auto industry. The newest MediaTek Dimensity Auto Cockpit family consists of CX-1, CY-1, CM-1, and CV-1, where the CX-1 targets premium vehicles, CM targets medium range, and CV targets lower-end vehicles, probably divided by their compute capabilities. The Dimensity Auto Cockpit family is brimming with the latest technology, as the processor core of choice is an Armv9-based design paired with "next-generation" NVIDIA GPU IP, possibly referring to Blackwell, capable of doing ray tracing and DLSS 3, powered by RTX and DLA.

The SoC is supposed to integrate a lot of technology to lower BOM costs of auto manufacturing, and it includes silicon for controlling displays, cameras (advanced HDR ISP), audio streams (multiple audio DSPs), and connectivity (WiFi networking). Interestingly, the SKUs can play movies with AI-enhanced video and support AAA gaming. MediaTek touts the Dimensity Auto Cockpit family with fully local AI processing capabilities, without requiring assistance from outside servers via WiFi, and 3D spatial sensing with driver and occupant monitoring, gaze-aware UI, and natural controls. All of that fits into an SoC fabricated at TSMC's fab on a 3 nm process and runs on the industry-established NVIDIA DRIVE OS.https://tpucdn.com/img/OIypUiDVEI0NtG9I_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/OIypUiDVEI0NtG9I.jpg) https://tpucdn.com/img/t9eLX5cffuQait8E_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/t9eLX5cffuQait8E.jpg)

Chinese e-commerce and cloud giant Alibaba announced its plans to launch a server-grade RISC-V processor later this year, and it showcased a RISC-V-powered laptop running an open-source operating system. The announcements were made by Alibaba's research division, the Damo Academy, at the recent Xuantie RISC-V Ecological Conference in Shenzhen. The upcoming server-class processor called the Xuantie C930, is expected to be launched by the end of 2024. While specific details about the chip have not been disclosed, it is anticipated to cater to AI and server workloads. This development is part of Alibaba's ongoing efforts to expand its RISC-V portfolio and reduce reliance on foreign chip technologies amidst US export restrictions. To complement the C930, Alibaba is also preparing a Xuantie 907 matrix processing unit for AI, which could be an IP block inside an SoC like the C930 or an SoC of its own.

In addition to the C930, Alibaba showcased the RuyiBOOK, a laptop powered by the company's existing T-Head C910 processor. The C910, previously designed for edge servers, AI, and telecommunications applications, has been adapted for use in laptops. Strangely, the RuyiBOOK laptop runs on the openEuler operating system, an open-source version of Huawei's EulerOS, which is based on Red Hat Linux. The laptop also features Alibaba's collaboration suite, Ding Talk, and the open-source office software Libre Office, demonstrating its potential to cater to the needs of Chinese knowledge workers and consumers without relying on foreign software. Zhang Jianfeng, president of the Damo Academy, emphasized the increasing demand for new computing power and the potential for RISC-V to enter a period of "application explosion." Alibaba plans to continue investing in RISC-V research and development and fostering collaboration within the industry to promote innovation and growth in the RISC-V ecosystem, lessening reliance on US-sourced technology.https://tpucdn.com/img/3faTZNoHNQ8z0Csu_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/3faTZNoHNQ8z0Csu.jpg)

NVIDIA is confirmed to implement the GDDR7 memory standard with the top three GPU ASICs powering the next-generation "Blackwell" GeForce RTX 50-series, Tweaktown reports, citing XpeaGPU. By this, we mean the top three physical silicon types from which NVIDIA will carve out the majority of its SKUs. This would include the GB202, the GB203, and GB205; which will power successors to everything from the current RTX 4070 to the RTX 4090. NVIDIA is expected to build these chips on the TSMC 4N foundry node.

There will be certain GPU ASIC types in the "Blackwell" generation that will stick to older memory standards such as GDDR6 or even the GDDR6X. These would be successors to the current AD106 and AD107 ASICs, powering SKUs such as the RTX 4060 Ti, and below. NVIDIA co-developed the GDDR6X standard with Micron Technology, which is the chip's exclusive supplier to NVIDIA. GDDR6X scales up to 23 Gbps and 16 Gbit, which means NVIDIA can avail plenty of performance for the lower-end of its product stack using GDDR6X; especially considering that its GDDR7 implementation will only run at 28 Gbps (https://www.techpowerup.com/320185/nvidia-geforce-rtx-50-series-blackwell-to-use-28-gbps-gddr7-memory-speed), despite chips being available in the market for 32 Gbps, or even 36 Gbps. Even if NVIDIA chooses the regular GDDR6 standard for its entry-mainstream chips, the tech scales up to 20 Gbps.https://tpucdn.com/img/JkoayPcLHt3li2vp_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/JkoayPcLHt3li2vp.jpg)

AMD at GDC 2024 announced the FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1 (FSR 3.1). While the original FSR 3.0 feature-set largely carries forward the super resolution upscaler from FSR 2.2, adding frame generation on top; the new FSR 3.1 adds several image quality improvements to the upscaler itself, improving image quality at every performance preset. Specifically, it improves the temporal stability of the output at rest and in movement, to reduce flickering and shimmering, or "fizziness" around objects in motion. The new upscaler also reduces ghosting, and better preserves detail.

Next up, is a rather important change in the way the frame generation technology works. AMD has decoupled FSR 3.1 frame generation from the upscaling tech, which allows frame generation to work with other upscaling solutions, such as DLSS or XeSS. The possibilities of such a decoupling are endless—have an RTX 30-series "Ampere" GPU that lacks DLSS 3 frame generation support? No worries, use DLSS 2 for the upscaling, and FSR 3.1 for the frame generation. AMD is also clumping its FidelityFX family of technologies into a new FidelityFX API that makes it easier for developers to debug, and paves the way for forward-compatibility with future versions of FSR. Lastly, FSR 3.1 supports Vulkan API, and the Microsoft Xbox GDK. AMD plans to release FSR 3.1 to developers through its GPUOpen platform in Q2-2024, and its first implementations on games are expected later this year. In the meantime, AMD implemented FSR 3.1 on "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart," to showcase the new upscaler.https://tpucdn.com/img/R5Tp5revdqPYnSNe_thm.jpg (https://www.techpowerup.com/img/R5Tp5revdqPYnSNe.jpg)
